    Karlsruhe Courthouse, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- The district attorney's office in Karlsruhe is presented in SC4 as a functional courthouse. It is a reasonably accurate representation although I have omitted the high perimeter walls which are just a little too imposing for my taste. In addition to providing your sims with 128 highly desirable civic jobs, it will help alleviate the commercial and residential demand caps that can hinder city development by providing additional regional demand of over 80,000 CO§§ spaces and 10,000 Residential spaces. Given the way that the game is designed, in addition to providing health, education, safety, etc, using rewards is an absolutely necessary part of being able to develop large cities and regions.   2. Car Ferry Terminal

    Car Ferry Terminal, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- While I quite like the look of the Maxis Car Ferry Terminal, after almost 15 years of seeing the same ferry building in game, it's time for an upgrade. This is a fictional building which I made for that purpose. While the lot conforms to the existing Maxis Car Ferry Terminal, it does not replace the in-game building. It is also slightly easier to place along the shore line - if you have ever placed the in-game version, you will have no problems using this lot as the principles are identical. Additionally, it uses standard maxis pavement textures (rather than a batted base like the in game version) so the lot will blend in with any sidewalk mods that you have. Just like the ingame lot, this lot is transit enabled for road, and as long as you draw the road into the lot, cars will drive through the building. Car Ferry buildings are a great alternative/supplement to bridges, and I use them to ease congestion on the road network. Please note the Car Ferry Terminal is a separate network from the Passenger Ferry Terminal. Ferries that leave from a passenger ferry terminal do not use a car ferry terminal and vice versa. Now, this is no different from the function in the vanilla rush-hour game, but as there are so few custom ferry terminals available for download, it is important to point out. Therefore, I recommend placing this at least twice in any city tile (on opposite shorelines) to get use. The ferry terminal is a modern building with a bar and restaurant on the upper levels. It has similar stats in terms of capacity and monthly cost to the Maxis Car Passenger Ferry Terminal, but provides a few more jobs. It is also limited to a maximum of 16 terminals per city tile and both this building and the in-game car ferry terminal count towards the 16 terminal number. Obviously it is found in the water transit section of the transportation menu and obviously it can only be placed in a city where in-game water is present; it does not work on canals or ploppable water.     Convention Center, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- Though fictional, this building is inspired by some of the modern architecture of China which shows an amazing combination of self-assuredness, ebullience and seemingly gravity-defying engineering. Sitting on a 6x6 lot, this is a large building with the lower three floors alone providing almost 8,000m2 of floor space per floor. At its highest point, the building is 8 stories tall. There is also a combination of exhibition halls (including high-clearance spaces), conference rooms, cafeterias and indoor/outdoor spaces. The entire building is arranged around a pleasant, treed central courtyard There are very few Convention Center buildings available for SC4, and even fewer that are actually *modded* as a Convention Center. This building provides some much-needed competition in that space. This BAT functions as a reward-lot and Convention Center in game. In addition to providing your sims with 154 highly desirable civic jobs, it will massively help alleviate the commercial demand caps that can hinder city development by giving an additional CAP relief of 270,000 CO§§ and 270,000 CO§§§ jobs in the region.     Alighieri Apartments, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- Alighieri apartments is a fictional creation in the modern international style. These apartments are 14 floors high and designed to fit into tight inner-city 2x2 blocks. It will work as a stand-alone apartment building as well as in a wall to wall environment. It also provides a little bit of much needed competition to the HKABT/Bixel apartments which have few competitors in the 2x2 space. Like many inner-city apartment buildings, the ground floor is devoted to retail space. The tower area has four apartments per floor, each apartment has a corner balcony; the street-facing apartments are larger (3 bedrooms) and have floor-to-ceiling glass in the lounge area. The rear apartments are 2 bedrooms each. There is no penthouse suite, instead residents enjoy a roof-top communal pool. Basement parking rounds out inner-city convenience.     Beverly Apartments, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- Bring some retro mid-century glamour to your cities with Beverly Apartments. It is inspired by a real-life US west coast building which was originally designed as an office building, but with its distinctive, cantilievered, bucket-shaped balconies, was ripe for a residential re-purposing in SC4. In game it is offered as an R§§ apartment. The apartments are mostly 1 bedroom, but with wide curtain glass windows feel spacious and airy. The ground floor and lower ground floors are reserved for shops and gallery spaces. Secure underground parking and a pool complete the ammenities for all the residents.     ING Direct, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- A high wealth, 14 storey office (CO§§§) typical of the 1990s style, it is inspired by an office in Sydney. It has typical features of the late 1990s: polished stone veneer feature cladding over concrete pre-cast walls; double height, off-set colonnaded forecourt; a curved central window feature and arched entrance-way; mixed materials and a small balcony for the executive offices. It is offered as a growable lot as a 3x2 and 3x3. It grows on all tilesets on medium and high density lots.     Gertrude Apartments, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- A fictional development, based on a new build in the San Francisco, CA area, Gertrude apartments was created to compete with some of the mid-rise R§§§ apartment complexes which can become quite repetitive in game. This apartment building uses a series of massings and elevations to provide abundant natural light and cross ventilation to each of the generously sized apartments. This design also ensures that most terraces are private and that all but one is overlooked from neighbouring flats. This apartment building is 8 floors high (excluding the mechanical penthouse area). The lower floors contain a number of 2 & 3 bedroom + 2 bathroom apartments, while the upper floors are reserved for spacious 3-4 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom apartments. The 7th and 8th floor has only one 'sky home' with a spacious, private sun terrace and generous planter boxes. The communal grounds planting is of low maintenance conifers on well-lit, compact grounds making these lots a great option in all density areas. The apartments are presented in two paint schemes: a deep, coffee colored scheme which looks great in dense, urban areas and a paler blue/green scheme inspired by the coast. Both are in prop families and will grow at random. These apartments are presented in 5 lot options: a 4x4, a 3x4, a 4x3, a 4x2 and a 2x4 lot. They grow on all tilesets and all have the same stats.     Houston Place Apartments, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- Inspired by the sorts of developments springing up not only across Texas, but in many parts of the world, Houston Place apartments is a fictional apartment building that I created to compete with some of the mid-rise R§§§ apartment complexes which can become quite repetitive in game. These sorts of apartments capitalise on the current architectural trends occurring in the South of the US: boxy, heavy-set buildings that utilise the trend of mixed materials: rubble-stone wall cladding, brick, steel and glass. Despite the assertive (albeit eclectic) use of mixed materials, they are neo-classical in style and quite conservative in the appearance of their street-scape and massing and are targeted at higher-end buyers. This apartment building is 8 floors high (including the roof-top recreation area and pool). The lower floors contain a number of 1 & 2 bedroom + 2 bathroom apartments, while the middle & upper floors are reserved for spacious 3 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom apartments. The 7th floor has only two 4 bedroom + study, 5 bathroom 'sky homes' with wrap around terraces and floor to ceiling panoramic windows. The communal grounds planting showcases evergreens all on well-lit, compact grounds making these lots as good in all density areas. These apartments are presented in 4 options: a 3x4, a 4x3, a 4x4 and an 8x4 lot. The 8x4 lot may take some time to grow (the game has a tendency to break these lots up) but holding the CTRL key while zoning will assist growth chances. They grow on all tilesets.   12. So a few years ago I had a go at bating. Unfortunately due to computer issues I never got around to finishing any of them, and long since lost the files. A bit of a shame really; I was nearly done modeling these two sets of buildings, all they really needed were nightlites and some desaturating of the textures. Oh well. Last weekend, for some odd reason, I decided to reinstall SimCity 4 and play it. But, after downloading a ton of new content, I found I still couldn't make the cities I wanted (mostly modern urban Dutch). The first thing that bothered me was the lack of varied in utilities, specifically pumping stations. So I looked up some modern pumping stations here in the Netherlands, and, the idiot that I am, downloaded gmax to see if I could make something of it: The first one I had a go at was a largish sewage pumping station: Unfortunately this is the material it is made out of, and I am not quite sure how to texture this. I have half a mind of simply modelling the panels instead of texturing it. In the mean time I decided to model another pumping station, a small drainage pump this time: It has the same issue with texturing, so oh well. While looking through pumping stations here in the Netherlands, I came across this little thingy and decided it also really needed modelling (for a change it is an actual ground water pumping station!): It is actually coming along quite nicely. I just need to finish the doors, add the rain gutter and some roof junk. I possibly need to figure out how to model a few pumps to fill the large frontal roof if the windows are going to be transparant (ugh...) At the same time I was really annoyed by the power utilities in the game. So yeah... I came across this funky little substation, and since it takes no effort to model had a go at it: Not sure if there is interest in this sort of thing though. I also created this substation (could also work as an industrial lot). I want to make it a wall to wall lot, but, as the roof is overhanging to the sides, I don't know how to go about it. And, if I ever feel confident enough to do so, I'd love to have a go at this power plant. The turbine halls are simple enough, but the chimney seems daunting. Anyway; thoughts and suggestions? Compliments or hate is also welcome. Oh, and IrfanView apparently does not like transparency. I hope you can ignore the black outlines on the images, they are not supposed to be there.

It was recently given a large extension in 2009, but I have not modelled that part of the building.     Ennuyeuse Apartments, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- Inspired by any number of the bland, blah and boring apartment blocks that have sprung up all around the world since the turn of the 21st century, I present Ennuyeuse Apartments. These sorts of apartments are clean and functional and appeal to conservative buyers with a safe, neutral colour palette of whites, creams, taupes and of course the newest kid on the neutral block: 'greige' trims and feature walls ('greige' is the colour and word combination of a deep warm grey on a beige base). No doubt in 30 years time, 'greige' will become as despised as the 1970s mission-browns and burnt oranges. All these apartment complexes are typically 8 stories tall, thereby broadening the conservative buyer appeal to the lucrative Asian market (the number 8 - pronounced 'Ba' in Mandarin sounds similar to 'Fa' which means to 'Make a Fortune' - hence the lucky association). However, given that these apartments usually use quite cheap materials with minimal noise and thermal insulation, the only people making a fortune are the developers! Floors 7 & 8 are reserved for the penthouse. The apartments feature other crowd pleasers such as securely garaged, underground parking; lift access; hidden drying balconies (these are the two tall louvered areas on both sides of the building); glass-railings on the main balconies and reverse cycle ducted airconditioning. Open-concept living areas, granite counter-tops, stainless steel appliances, ensuite and guest bathrooms all add to the broad buyer appeal. The planting is non-descript with crowd pleasing evergreens all on well-lit, compact and easy-to-maintain grounds ensuring that strata levies/HOA fees are kept to a minimum.     Modern Sound Barriers, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- A set of nine sound barrier lots to grace your ground-level highways, heavy rail (etc): really, these can be placed anywhere you think noise from adjacent transport lots might be an issue for your long-suffering sims. While there are other noise barrier lots out there, I found that some were simply too big, some were too grungy, some didn't have diagonal options and there was a distinct lack of modern-looking barriers, so I made some to suit my own taste. These sound barriers are a modern concrete, steel and glass option. The lots have Orthogonal, Diagonal, Orthogonal to Diagonal and Left and Right Overhanging options. The Ortho->Diag options can be a bit fiddly to place, but you'll soon get the hang of it and to that end each lot has a custom icon to try and make the job a little easier (the standard ortho and diagonals simply have a grey line icon, while the more complex ones have a little picture as well). As a general rule, you should aim to place these lots with the curved glass top facing towards the noise (this has a cupping effect to dampen the noise beyond the wall). They are found in the parks menu - about half way down. Now, depending on your plugins folder they may not be sequential (i.e. other park lots might appear in between) but they will be very closely positioned to each other in the menu. As I made these for myself and designed them to be high-end, nice looking sound walls, they do have a park effect (and associated monthly cost), so if you are trying to keep your city looking grungy, don't use these. While some of you may think that this is very un-realistic, please be mindful that you would only see these sorts of walls bordering nicer residential/commercial/industrial areas in real life, so these lots are designed to stimulate medium to high wealth growth rather than simply being neutral...unfortunately this is the way the game works and to my mind, when modding something with an in-built desirability, it should come with an associated cost.     Rapson Library is an early 60s academic building based heavily on the University of Minnesota's Rapson Hall, located on the east bank of the Twin Cities campus. It is named for modernist architect Ralph Rapson, who was the head of the university's architecture department from 1954 to 1984. Though Rapson was responsible for a sizeable number of modernist works, perhaps he is best known for his Riverside Plaza apartment complex, which received mainstream attention when it was featured in the Mary Tyler Moore Show. To be clear, the real-world Rapson Hall was not designed by Ralph Rapson, but rather by Thorshov and Cerny, another Minneapolis-based firm. As the title suggests, I have modded this building as a library. One dependency is required - Volume 1 of the Cycledogg BSC texture pack. As always, I have included two options for the night scene: one that fits with the game's default night mode, and one that makes use of Simfox's delightful darknite mod.     Another Minnesota building! It's almost as if I have a preference for that sort of thing. This particular building is located by the Mississippi River's western bank, right at the heart of the western portion of the University of Minnesota's Twin Cities campus. Dating to 1963, it was among the first buildings to be completed as part of the university's expansion across the river. Over 50 years later, it remains the tallest university building on the western side of the river and is home to, unsurprisingly, a number of social science departmental offices. I've modded it as a ploppable college building as well as a growable CO$$ building. As usual, both darknite and maxisnite versions are included. The darknite scene requires this lovely mod from Simfox. Otherwise, this baby is dependency free. Note that two versions of this model are included - one with modeled ground and one with an editable lot. I kept the editable version simple so you can play around with it freely - I'm curious to see what you all come up with! I think it's pretty good but not quite sure.. Also since this building was constructed in 2007 and it isn't any sort of icon, it's pretty hard to find good, up close pictures of areas that can't be seen from google maps street view.

    Parkland Lofts, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- Inspired by a new build near the University precinct in Little Rock Arkansas, 'Parkland Lofts' is the modern apartment equivalent of the old internationalist style of the 1970s. It is the sort of new apartment building that can be found in London, Sydney, Dusseldorf, Moscow, Paris, Tokyo or even Little Rock. Despite being billed as 'stylish' and having 'cutting edge design' (developers are generally fast and loose with new-build descriptions), these buildings are in fact bereft of almost all ornamentation and sense of place, such that they will fit in anywhere. The Little Rock version is called 'Park Lane' and actually sits in the middle of a shopping mall car-park - yuck - so as you can imagine, I have taken artistic liberties with the BAT and LOT. It has been a while since I released any apartment buildings: medium density residentials are certainly the main-stay of most cities, and smaller mid-rise offerings are still especially lacking in game. This apartment complex is offered on a range of medium and high density lots in a variety of configurations: 2x5, 5x2, 5x3, 5x5 and 6x6. If you use the CTRL Key while zoning, these will grow (especially the 5x5 and 6x6 offerings), and all of them grew quite easily for me. I also find that having SOMY's low-wealth apartments (which have identical lot sizes and can upgrade more easily) helps to avoid the game breaking up the lots into smaller parcels, but it is by no means necessary to have SOMY's files in order to get these growing. Given how ubiquitous this design is, these lots are designed to grow on all tilesets. The lots also use prop families and shaded props to ensure a lot of variety. Underground parking is provided for all but the 5x2/2x5 version and some even have such wonderful amenities as a pool and communal BBQ. Bliss indeed.     Here's something I did almost a year ago but never got around to showing it all in a CJ entry. It's the Temple of Jupiter in the Zone called Acropolis, which I realize now is kind of a strange name since the temple is more Roman style than it is Greek. Don't have time to go into detail about this area, but I want to get this out, so for now just take in the sights. Unfortunately imgur has significantly reduced the quality of the pics. Mind if I ask how much time did it take for you to make it look like that and how much time you spend editing the images in general? I spend a good portion of a day just doing minor editing like cutting and stitching together mosaics for an entry. It scares me how much time it would take for me to do anymore than that. Also is there an image editing program that you favor or would recommend? A mod like that would sure save me a lot of time. A pic with a lot of effects can take up to a couple of hours, the last one in this entry probably took longer. I use Adobe Photoshop. Thanks.
