  2. As tourism is booming in Principauté de Caravella-Guatalaga, the number of hotel rooms is also increasing rapidly in Port de Caravella. Various hotels have opened in recent years with big chains like Hyatt, Mercure and Holiday Inn trying to get a fair share of the tourism market. One of the fine exceptions to these chains is the Victoria Hotel located at Place Victoria. The hotel originally opened in 1788 and is a landmark building ever since. Today, Hotel Victoria is located at the point where both Light Rail lines (Ligne Bleu and Ligne Rouge) come together ... but more on that in a later update. Since 2007, the Grand Hyatt Hotel is located next door to Hotel Victoria. Replies @kschmidt @v701 @sucram17 @raynev1 @feyss @_Michael @TekindusT Thank you all so much for the positive comments! @mike_oxlong The boulevard is very custom, but unfortunately not a mod that i can share ... Another addition to the booming tourist industry is the Spring Mall, located on the west side of the old city. The mall holds 78 different Retail stores, including brands like Zara, Mango, Media Markt, H&M and a Coca-Cola brand store. Across from the Spring Mall is the CBS (Caravella Broadcasting Service) building. All national TV and radio stations are located within this building. But if you are a tourist and want to escape all of this, then Plage de Petite Baie is the place to go. Although being one of the smallest beaches in the country it's less touristic as the bigger beaches and usually occupied by the locals that live in the old town. If you like it, let me know!

Millennium Hotel Knightsbridge, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- If you've recently downloaded Harrods http://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/31736-harrods/ you may be wanting some additional UK themed Bats to fill the surrounding area. Fear not; over on nearby Sloane Street, a brutalist monstrosity caught my eye, and so I have brought this into game. When I look at a building from Google Street View, if at a street level it piques my interest, then I'll usually look at it from either Google Earth or Bing to get a better feel for the model. It is at this point that I will determine whether I will do a recreation, or adopt a looser approach. Either way, there will always be elements of each building I look at that in my opinion will stay or go when I recreate the building for SC4. Normally not too many elements of a building get turfed out: those that do are either aligned at an odd angle (rather than the SC4 grid), or are too awkward to be worth my effort. It is rare, however, that a building catches my eye on street level, for me to look at it from above and shake my head with a 'what were they thinking' moment. Millennium Hotel in Knightsbridge is one such building. It caught my eye because there are so few of these sorts of buildings in SC4; now I'll admit I am not a huge fan of brutalist early 1970's architecture: add the inclement British weather & city smog and you have hulking concrete structures that have gone from a light green-grey to the most dreary shade of dirty grey imaginable. But regardless of your opinion on Brutalism, you have to admit that it at least exudes authority and gravitas. So it came as some surprise when I saw all of the truly, truly "twee" additions visible from the air....now, with apologies to Mcmansionhell.com and other spoof websites, please see my take on what got the 'cut' from this Bat and why... ********************************************************************************************************************************************************************** Hopefully my UK friends can get a bit of a laugh out of this: you have been through a fair bit in recent months. Now that that's out of the way, the Millenium Hotel is offered as a growable CS§§ building on a 4x4 lot. It is a larger 14 story mid-rise building, which I have made my own adjustments to. It grows on all tilesets and provides 960 CS§§ jobs. --------------------------------------- STATS CS§§: Lot size : 4 x 4 Growth Stage: 7 (Medium and High Density Zoning) Bulldoze Cost: § 780 Capacity Satisfied: CS§ 3,831, CS§§ 960 Pollution: 35 (Air)/ 23 (Water)/ 47 (Garbage ) Pollution Radius: 6/7/0 Power Consumed: 77 Mwh Water Consumed: 923 Gal/Month Building Style: Chicago/NY/Houston/Euro (N/A for Ploppable) Occupant Group: Commercial Services Building NOTE ABOUT DARK NITE vs MAXIS NITE: This download contains TWO model files; one for dark nite users (and other night-time darkening mods, such as Gizmos night-mod) and one for the standard Maxis nite. You must keep only one file - depending on which version you use. If you are unsure whether you have a night-darkening mod installed, then choose the Maxis night version. Regardless of which file you choose to keep, make sure you DO NOT delete the Lot File! If you use the dark nite version, you will need a dark nite mod. --------------------------------------- DEPENDENCIES: This lot does not require external dependencies. --------------------------------------- To install, simply unzip the contents of this file into your plugins folder.

  18. Oosterpolder - the Central Business District

As promised this journal entry will look at Oosterpolder and the Central Business District. The shot above gives a good overview of the whole Oosterpolder ('Eastern land-reclamation'). What was originally a spit of land reaching into the shallow sea, has been expanded over the centuries using a system of dams, canals and land drainage. Taken together this is the 'polder' system of land reclamation. In the case of Pieterdam's Oosterpolder, this has allowed several square kilometers of prime real-estate to be reclaimed from the sea. This land has not gone to waste; as you can see, the part closest to the city has become a densely-developed Central Business District. Here you can see some of Pieterdam's largest employers. To the front left is the Zentraal Zikenhuis, the Central Hospital. To the right is the De Wolf department store - one of the older buildings in the area, which managed to survive the major warehouse fire that cleared the area at the turn of the 20th century. Behind these are the Servicing Services and Digirealms buildings - just two of the corporations which make their home in Pieterdam. The Science Centre is another major employer. It provides office and laboratory space, as a commercial spin-off of the University of Pieterdam. The University's main campus is located about a kilometer away, on the Oosterpolder side of the Oudekade: : Another notable landmark is the picturesque Oosterpolderpark, famous for its lake and open-air arboretum: A view from the lakeside: The Oosterpolder closest to Oudekade and the city centre is some of the most expensive in the city. Besides shopping centers and offices, the area contains a large number of hotels to cater for Pieterdam's significant tourist economy. Below you can make out two of the more famous hotels in the area; the Hilton (by far the largest hotel in the city, with nearly 1.000 beds), and the Prism, an independent hotel popular with LGBT visitors; indeed, the area around it has become something of a 'gay village' with many cafe-bars, late clubs and boutique stores catering for this community. Just to the right of the Prism you can see the West Holland Civichuis, seat of the provincial government. And over the other side of the water you can just make out the Stadhuis, the City Hall which administrates Pieterdam itself. Together the Civichuis and Stadhuis host the political life of West Holland. By now we've been here all day, and soon the sun will be setting - but life in the Oosterpolder continues After Dark! When the sun goes down, the lights come on! The Vermeerplein (above) is a good example of Pieterdam's night-life - bustling with open-air restaurants and market stalls, it also hosts the Rondo Drome Cinema, a real gem of 1920's Modernist architecture: When the restaurants and theaters close, some of us go to our beds - but others continue partying the whole night through! Far from the city center, near the furthest edges of the Oosterpolder, is the Tramwegstraat, also known its English name 'Tramway Street', which is the definitive center of Pieterdam's alternative and late-night club scenes: Refuse trucks going to work, whilst exhausted revelers wait for a tram back to the city center and Old Town... As the sun comes up, the music continues at the legendary 5 AM Club. Up-and-down the Tramwegstraat abandoned buildings are squatted by youth groups (above), whilst other buildings cater for the seedier side of life (below): Pieterdam lacks a polished, touristic 'red light district' like the one found in Amsterdam; instead brothels operate out of several low-rent premises along the Tramwegstraat. This area nearby has the lowest land value in all the Oosterpolder, and for that reason it has become home to various low-rise 'out-of-town' retail outlets - as well as the Zoo Palast multi-screen cinema: A large parcel of land adjacent to the cinema is currently being developed into Pieterdam's first true 'shopping mall' - the city council hope that this will help to regenerate the area around the Tramwegstraat, although some local residents are resistant to this idea and vow to maintain the distinctive character of the area - for better or worse! This whole area borders the actual dam, from which Pieterdam takes its name. The original dam dates back centuries, but it has been extensively improved down the years. Where the river meets the sea, the resulting polder-land has been developed into a series of quiet suburbs: Traffic bypasses these suburbs completely as it heads towards the bridges and overpasses that line the riverside: Next time, let's take a look at where all that traffic is heading: towards the heavy industrial areas of the Docklands, over on the far side of the river from the city. That's all for this journal! Dank je wel...

  25. A Vacation in Saturnia

Summer time in any major cities means tourists, and for Saturnia, that will mean a time to welcome new visitors into the city. This is the story of a family of anonymous tourists who will be taking in the many sites of Saturnia. Day 1 is the shortest, so don't think that the rest will be. At approximately 12:09 PM, our plane landed at Saturnia International Airport. The terminal was also full of visitors, but locals and business travelers were also present. And with that, the only way into the city without a rental car was public transit. The Saturnia Transportation Authority (STA) provides subway/elevated rail service to the airport, as well as train and bus services. Therefore, we got on an elevated train to go to the hotel to drop off our belongings before the sightseeing began. The ride was long, but brought us to Center Square, where our target hotel stands. Preferred by business travelers, this hotel is located in the heart of downtown Saturnia, and is a mere three blocks from the Convention Center. It also has the transit access and is between any major sites. The hotel itself stands 21 stories, far from the tallest you'll find here, but has a shopping center, direct access to the underground train concourse, and is a 4 star hotel. It's not big or anything, but quality over quantity. It was mid afternoon once that was settled, but we didn't have to go far for our first attraction. We went to the observatory of the Prominence Bank Tower, which stands 1,078 feet over the streets. The views are spectacular, and it's spire can be seen throughout the Saturnia region. At the end of the afternoon, we went to a Saturnia Orchestra concert at the Merrit Center for Preforming Arts, the city's major preforming arts venue. And so ended our first day in Saturnia. Tune in next time for the second day of sightseeing. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more on the Prominence Bank Tower observation deck, see the past entry The View from Above, which discusses it.
