    592 Fifth Avenue NYC by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- 592 Fifth Avenue New York is a refurbished W2W building from Manhattan. This 11-story + mezzanine building has been through a number of transformations, and this BAT represents its current iteration. Initially the Black, Starr & Frost building, it was five stories high in the Beaux Arts Style. During the mid-twentieth century, it then received a 6 story addition and the facade was given a brutalist make-over with its main tenant as the Bank of America. Its latest look sees the brutalist facade removed and clad in polished metal panels with a number of ginza-esque coloured lightboxes snaking up and around the facade. The anchor tenant is Lululemon. So now your sims can wear over-priced active-wear. Lot size is 1x2 and it is suitable in a Wall to Wall (W2W) environment or as a standalone building. It grows on the New-York Tileset only. If you want it ploppable, then download Buggis Extra Cheats to make it, and everything else in your game a ploppable item. I made this building to fill the paucity of available buildings that can be placed along diagonal roads.     NAB Hobart, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- A request from a fellow SC4 player, NAB Hobart is a slim-line 14 floor mid-rise (or high-rise depending on your point of view) mid-twentieth century building from downtown Hobart, Australia. So typical of the mid-century design, the main tower part of the building sits atop a wider podium level with exposed columns at both transition areas to lend a 'lightness' of contruction quality to the design. Another piece in the playbook of modernist style is the wall sculpture that adorns the main entrance. Vertical concrete and metal fins help visually lengthen the building. I have taken some liberties with the building. Most notably, in real life the large blank wall area of the tower actually faces the street and the windowed wall faces other builidngs. I found that highly peculiar, so swapped that odd detail around to make this a much more traditional W2W building. The building, covered in multi-coloured stone cladding with steel lattice work, has raised first-floor outdoor platforms over the ground level and underground parking areas. Entry to the lobby is on the ground floor behind lush planters. The building, made of composite face-brick and multi-coloured aluminium panel construction, has all of the details that a tech company would want for a regional office: under-cover parking, blocky and dumpy lower floor treatment to provide an air of stability, grand stair case (wheelchair access is via the adjacent, covered ramp) and of course, solar panels for 'green credentials'.     Ginza gCube, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- This is a taller mid-rise Wall to wall (W2W) building from the main shopping street in Tokyo's Ginza district that caught my eye. It is not a strict recreation - the 16m2 constraints of SC4 make that too challenging - but is a reasonable interpretation. I liked the dramatic, sweeping, almost oculus treatment of the different metals along the front facade which make for an eye-catching (pun intended) modern design to an otherwise boring box of a building. Additionally, I have pared back any overtly Japanese imagery to ensure that this building will work equally well in either an Eastern or a Western styled city. In the real building, the party walls are blank, but I have included windows in this version to enable the building to work well in either a W2W streetscape or in a more open downtown environment where you don't want to see a big blank wall! This is an eye-catching modern midrise building that definitely helps break the grid when it grows. I also like fact that it has upper roof gardens (both as open terraces and semi-enclosed spaces (the areas under the metal lattice-work at either end of the building).     The Ivy Nightclub, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- This is my own version of the Ivy nightclub on George Street in Sydney and is designed to fill the gap in the lack of larger CS§§§ buildings available. The cluster of buildings on this lot is actually a complex called the Ivy Precinct and is a series of clubs, 18 different bars, 11 different restaurants, day-time and night-time leisure areas, cafes, shops, etc. One of the larger clubs hosts the Ministry of Sound. This set of 3 buildings (one from the Victorian Era and two from the 21st Century) replicates another rare commodity in SC4: narrow, bustling laneways. In real cities, small laneways are very common. Due to the 16m wide network constraints in SC4, it isn't really possible to recreate busy, tightly packed buildings and narrow pedestrian thoroughfares, so this is the next best thing. The Ivy precinct was purpose built and completed in 2008 at a cost of 150 Million AUD. A few years later, Sydney introduced draconian lockout laws which basically destroyed the night-time economy in the CBD area. Just like the unintended consequences of the Prohibition era in the U.S. led to speak-easys, unregulated alcohol consumption, death from consuming contaminated moon-shine and a strong, well organised Mafia, the unintended consequences of this poor decision has killed tourism, sent young people to pop-up raves and warehouse parties and forced night clubs to open in neighbouring suburban areas. As a result the Ivy nightclub will soon be torn down and replaced with a hotel/apartment/office block. The eye-catching modernist building with its lush green walls and multiple outdoor spaces is offered as a CS§§§ growable on a 4x3 and 3x4 medium and high-density lot providing 266 jobs.     National Geographic Society, Washington DC, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- Who hasn't been enthralled over the years with the incredible imagery of magazines, documentaries and the awe inspiring sharing of knowledge about our beautiful and precious planet. The National Geographic society is one of the largest non-profit scientific and educational organistations in the world and was founded in 1888 as "a society for the increase and diffusion of geographical knowledge". It is headquartered in Washington DC. The National Geographic Society Headquarters was built in 1963 in the what is known as the new formalist style. It is made of concrete, marble and glass and conveys a uniform and symmetrical appearance; the marble columns provide strong verticality and are a reinterpretation of earlier classical, temple like forms. This is especially true of the upper floors and projecting fins along the colonnade. It is also here, in order to circumvent the odd viewing angle of SC4, that I have taken slight liberties with the building and reduced the width of these overhanging fins. It none-the-less remains reasonably faithful to the language of new formalism. The National Geographic Society Headuarters operates as a museum in real life. Particularly as your region starts to develop, having a lack of larger CS§§ buildings can really stifle additional city development. This leads to a drop in demand across your residential drivers and can completely tank any growth at all. This design is based on the Amethyst Suites and Inn from the promotional images of SC2013. The building as presented is a total retro-fest. A broad, ten story circular tower with multiple projections sits atop a two story podium that houses shops and the lobby. A decagon-shaped restaurant (the height of class in the 1970's) graces the very top of the building. Probably called the 'Promenade Room' or 'Sunset lounge' it is the perfect spot to order a sneaky 'old fashioned' or 'rob-roy' cocktail while the kids splash about in that other 1970's icon, the kidney-shaped pool, ten floors below. This is a really eye-catching mid-century mid-rise building that definitely helps break the grid when it grows. It isn't a strict recreation as I have deliberately shortened the red-roofed entrance area to fit the building onto a smaller 2 tile deep footprint. Also, with thanks to another member on SC4Devotion, the building has been rotated and turned into an overhanging prop so that it can be plopped to conform with the NAM 2x2 curve piece. It also works with the larger curve, as the images show. Collaboration is indeed alive and well. This is just such a building that was inspired by one on Rhode Island Avenue in Washington DC. It is a 9 story building with basement parking, but the two 8 story projections and the angled entrance foyer help to break up the facade rather nicely. With its alternative stacked pale brick walls, it is also a total 1970's relic, which is still somewhat lacking in game.     Perth Council Building, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- Inspired by the Council Building in Perth's Stirling Gardens, here is another iconic early 1960's building. This is an example of the modernist style with Bauhaus leanings, and has distinctive external 'T' shaped sun-shades in alternating patterns over the curtain glass wall to block out the hot Western Australian sun. Conversely, the roof area has a perspex covered walkway which I imagine would be about as comfortable as an ant under a magnifying glass in the broiling summer heat! It is with the 'T' shaped awnings that I taken most of the liberties with this building; reducing the width of the top part of the 'T' to ensure that each sun-shade is clearly visible in game rather than blurring into one. The real-life building was actually slated for demolition in the 1990's, but was saved and renovated as well as adding one extra floor at the top of the building. Recently, the building was also fitted thousands of coloured leds: hence, the unusual, and prettily-coloured night-lights. This BAT functions as a government building and town hall in game. In addition to providing your sims with 185 highly desirable civic jobs, it will help alleviate the commercial demand caps that can hinder city development. Given the way that the game is designed, in addition to providing health, education, safety, etc, using rewards is an absolutely necessary part of being able to develop large cities and regions. It sits on a 5x3 lot and will easily blend in with other park lots (such as the SFBT mid-wealth set) that use the Maxis R$$ plain grass. These apartments are 14 floors high and designed to fit into tight inner-city 2x2 blocks. It will work as a stand-alone apartment building as well as in a wall to wall environment. It also provides a little bit of much needed competition to the HKABT/Bixel apartments which have few competitors in the 2x2 space. Like many inner-city apartment buildings, the ground floor is devoted to retail space. The tower area has four apartments per floor, each apartment has a corner balcony; the street-facing apartments are larger (3 bedrooms) and have floor-to-ceiling glass in the lounge area. The rear apartments are 2 bedrooms each. There is no penthouse suite, instead residents enjoy a roof-top communal pool. Basement parking rounds out inner-city convenience. Like many of the newer London developments, this design is fairly straightforward: double storey entrance lobby (and ground floor flats each with a fenced off outdoor area) and then double storey sub-penthouse and penthouse levels. The building is twelve stories tall. As is often typical in inner-city developments, none of the apartments has particularly large balconies: traffic noise usually makes these less than inviting spaces. Floor to ceiling triple-glazed windows on all sides of the building more than adequately make up for this lack of terrace space. The communal planting includes a mix of deciduous trees and conifers; the larger lots have both a heated indoor pool and tennis court for the exclusive use of the residents. These apartments are presented in 6 lot options: a 2x1, a 2x2, a 2x3, a 4x4, a 5x5 and a 6x6 lot. They grow on all tilesets and all have varying stats depending on the lot size.     Millennium Hotel Knightsbridge, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- If you've recently downloaded Harrods https://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/31736-harrods/ you may be wanting some additional UK themed Bats to fill the surrounding area. Fear not; over on nearby Sloane Street, a brutalist monstrosity caught my eye, and so I have brought this into game. When I look at a building from Google Street View, if at a street level it piques my interest, then I'll usually look at it from either Google Earth or Bing to get a better feel for the model. It is at this point that I will determine whether I will do a recreation, or adopt a looser approach. Either way, there will always be elements of each building I look at that in my opinion will stay or go when I recreate the building for SC4. Normally not too many elements of a building get turfed out: those that do are either aligned at an odd angle (rather than the SC4 grid), or are too awkward to be worth my effort. It is rare, however, that a building catches my eye on street level, for me to look at it from above and shake my head with a 'what were they thinking' moment. Millennium Hotel in Knightsbridge is one such building. It caught my eye because there are so few of these sorts of buildings in SC4; now I'll admit I am not a huge fan of brutalist early 1970's architecture: add the inclement British weather & city smog and you have hulking concrete structures that have gone from a light green-grey to the most dreary shade of dirty grey imaginable. But regardless of your opinion on Brutalism, you have to admit that it at least exudes authority and gravitas. So it came as some surprise when I saw all of the truly, truly "twee" additions visible from the air....now, with apologies to Mcmansionhell.com and other spoof websites, please see my take on what got the 'cut' from this Bat and why... ********************************************************************************************************************************************************************** Hopefully my UK friends can get a bit of a laugh out of this: you have been through a fair bit in recent months. Now that that's out of the way, the Millenium Hotel is offered as a growable CS§§ building on a 4x4 lot. It is a larger 14 story mid-rise building, which I have made my own adjustments to.     Home of the London stock exchange at the feet of St. Paul's cathedral, 6 Paternoster Square lies in the heart of the city of London. This landmark plop provides a strong boost to desirability within the region and should help you attract some valuable commercial industry. The building's rhombus-like shape makes for great built-in squares to help your working sims some breathing room within your urban centre.     S.A.C. Commercial Building, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- Back in 2005 when I first started batting, user S.A.C. (an amazing lot-maker and author of the legendary CJ 'Olympia') posted some pictures of SC3URK buildings to inspire batters. I saved a few of these pictures to my hard-drive: S.A.C. had an amazing eye for detail in SC3 & SC4 and it is nice to be able to add one of her Sim City 3000 inspirations to Sim City 4 all these years later. This building is a very loose interpretation of the SC3URK artwork that S.A.C. displayed. 'S.A.C. Commercial' is a 24-floor tower with a shopping mall at the base and offices above the 6th floor podium. It sits on quite a tight lot: 3x2 and 3x3 as both a high-wealth commercial services (CS§§§) and commercial offices (CO§§§) offering. It is a growable mid-rise building only and grows on all tilesets. It competes well with many of the Maxis mid-rises.
