  1. Another Update on Pololomia

    Replies: First of all I just want to say thank you to SC4L0ver, frdrcklim, nycsc4, Prophet42, kelistmac, T Wrecks, airman15 and Whte_rbt for their comments. I replied to most of them and I want to say thanks to T Wrecks for exploring my method of plopping residential some more. Entry 5: Another Update on Pololomia Here are twelve more pictures of Pololomia, I've considerably expanded the city and now I'm working on the border between the city and the countryside. 1. And here is Pololomia so far. Right now I am filling in the parts of the city centre which aren't complete, then I'm going to work some more on the industrial area to the left and then create some rural areas along the left side of this picture. 2. More grid-busting. 3. Suburban area close to the countryside. 4. The secret with suburbs is offsetting some sides of the suburban block with a tile or two (or more) of fillers. It's very easy to zone everything to the main road or street, but having a main road with only one (or no) side of residential can look more realistic. 5. Now we go to the city centre. 6. Loving Mattb325's new buildings- to the left is his urban school and in the centre is his First Federal Bank building. 7. In the centre of the picture is this school. 8. Using fillers I expanded the size of the school grounds and made it far more distinctive: a perimeter fence, car park, greenhouses, etc... 9. Squeezing out every last drop from FrankU's Dutch Parks! 10. The criss-crossing railways divide up the city. 11. I have changed parts of the industrial area to the northwest. Gone is the garbage dump and in its place rail sidings and a grain processing factory! 12. Making the most of Simmer2's rail sidings. The next update will probably be more rural as I move into MMP work and more organic, grid-busting sights. So stay tuned for that next weekend!

    Convention Center, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- Though fictional, this building is inspired by some of the modern architecture of China which shows an amazing combination of self-assuredness, ebullience and seemingly gravity-defying engineering. Sitting on a 6x6 lot, this is a large building with the lower three floors alone providing almost 8,000m2 of floor space per floor. At its highest point, the building is 8 stories tall. There is also a combination of exhibition halls (including high-clearance spaces), conference rooms, cafeterias and indoor/outdoor spaces. The entire building is arranged around a pleasant, treed central courtyard There are very few Convention Center buildings available for SC4, and even fewer that are actually *modded* as a Convention Center. This building provides some much-needed competition in that space. This BAT functions as a reward-lot and Convention Center in game. In addition to providing your sims with 154 highly desirable civic jobs, it will massively help alleviate the commercial demand caps that can hinder city development by giving an additional CAP relief of 270,000 CO§§ and 270,000 CO§§§ jobs in the region.     Standard Federal Savings and Loan, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- A classic mid-century cantilevered building, this dual towered mid-rise is inspired by old architectural drawings from the 1960s. The bulk of this building is fictional (eg, forecourt, entrance foyer and underground parking), but the external metal skeleton, 'eau-de-Nil' colour scheme of the wall panels and massings are true to the original. The building comes in four easily growable lots: two growable high-wealth Commercial Office lots (3x4 and 4x4) and two high-wealth Commercial Services Lots (4x3 and 4x4...there is always an insatiable need for CS§§§ in game). Use the CTRL key while zoning to enable ease of development. I've been trying my hand at making building blockers and I hit an unexpected snag with Cobb13thStreet condos and Mattb325 Kendrick Apts (which I can't find a link for -- uh ?) : they won't open in the Reader. At first I thought there was something in the name of the file (it happened for another lot and slightly changing the name solved the problem) but not this time. This is beyond my SC4 pay grade :-) Anyone has an idea what is happening ? (And BTW, the ugrade : wow, that was fast... And pretty in pink ! )

    Dental Clinic, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- Few people look forward to a trip to the dentist, but as every one knows, part of general health care is looking after your pearly whites. I've often wondered at how bad the Sims teeth must be, given that there is no specific health exemplar for dentistry and there are next to no such clinics in Sim City! This little building is inspired by a real such mid-century low rise building near downtown Los Angeles. I really liked the curved entrance façade and small, high windows within the curtain wall and of course, the unmistakable dental signage ensures that the building's function is immediately recognisable. As an added bonus, this building will function equally well as a stand-alone building or in a Wall-to-Wall environment. In game, I use buildings like this to supplement the main hospital function and I have modded the capacities to sit mid way between the clinic and standard hospital.   6. Car Ferry Terminal

    Car Ferry Terminal, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- While I quite like the look of the Maxis Car Ferry Terminal, after almost 15 years of seeing the same ferry building in game, it's time for an upgrade. This is a fictional building which I made for that purpose. While the lot conforms to the existing Maxis Car Ferry Terminal, it does not replace the in-game building. It is also slightly easier to place along the shore line - if you have ever placed the in-game version, you will have no problems using this lot as the principles are identical. Additionally, it uses standard maxis pavement textures (rather than a batted base like the in game version) so the lot will blend in with any sidewalk mods that you have. Just like the ingame lot, this lot is transit enabled for road, and as long as you draw the road into the lot, cars will drive through the building. Car Ferry buildings are a great alternative/supplement to bridges, and I use them to ease congestion on the road network. Please note the Car Ferry Terminal is a separate network from the Passenger Ferry Terminal. Ferries that leave from a passenger ferry terminal do not use a car ferry terminal and vice versa. Now, this is no different from the function in the vanilla rush-hour game, but as there are so few custom ferry terminals available for download, it is important to point out. Therefore, I recommend placing this at least twice in any city tile (on opposite shorelines) to get use. The ferry terminal is a modern building with a bar and restaurant on the upper levels. It has similar stats in terms of capacity and monthly cost to the Maxis Car Passenger Ferry Terminal, but provides a few more jobs. It is also limited to a maximum of 16 terminals per city tile and both this building and the in-game car ferry terminal count towards the 16 terminal number. Obviously it is found in the water transit section of the transportation menu and obviously it can only be placed in a city where in-game water is present; it does not work on canals or ploppable water.   7. Urban School

    Urban School by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- In real life, many schools teach students from Kindergarten all the way through to the end of Senior School, and, in this ghastly era of economic rationalism where every public institution must return a profit to justify its existence, many are also forced to host more lucrative adult evening classes. Having schools in SC4 that cater for Elementary through to High School is nothing new (for example see my Bourke St Public School: Bourke St Public School), but combining junior, senior and adult education in the one campus hasn't been done before (to my knowledge). The Urban School combines all three functions. It is crucial to note that this school is not designed or modded to be a radical lot. If you want a radical lot that increases education levels with no cost and taking up no space, then this is not for you. Placing this lot merely emulates all three functions of the Maxis Large Elementary School, the Maxis Large High School and the Maxis City College in terms of Capacity, Radius, Cost and School Effectiveness vs Average Age categories; using the upper limits of each school type to create a single multi-purpose institution. It houses up to 14,500 students and has a very large coverage radius. EQ Boost and Population vs Distance stats are the same as the standard Maxis schools. The Bat itself is fictional, and is based on any number of more modern educational institutions. The central entrance area houses adminsitration, cafeteria, gymnasium/indoor courts & auditorium; the junior school is housed in the smaller wing, and the senior school laboratories and workshops in the larger wing. The adult college uses the senior wing after 5pm once all of the students and day teachers have gone home. This is a large building and lot, weighing in at 8x8 tiles (a bit over 4 acres in the old parlance) and has ample room for a soccer pitch, grassed relaxation areas and the typical asphalt surfaces where countless kids can graze their elbows and knees when falling over. It provides 390 teaching jobs. Visually, the lot is best placed on a corner, following the contour of the front driveway area. Like all my Bats, I have thoroughly tested this concept in both a Vanilla game and a full (4+GB) plugins for over 500 Sim Years in each and haven't observed any abnormal occurrences.   8. Perth Council Building

    Perth Council Building, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- Inspired by the Council Building in Perth's Stirling Gardens, here is another iconic early 1960's building. This is an example of the modernist style with Bauhaus leanings, and has distinctive external 'T' shaped sun-shades in alternating patterns over the curtain glass wall to block out the hot Western Australian sun. Conversely, the roof area has a perspex covered walkway which I imagine would be about as comfortable as an ant under a magnifying glass in the broiling summer heat! It is with the 'T' shaped awnings that I taken most of the liberties with this building; reducing the width of the top part of the 'T' to ensure that each sun-shade is clearly visible in game rather than blurring into one. The real-life building was actually slated for demolition in the 1990's, but was saved and renovated as well as adding one extra floor at the top of the building. Recently, the building was also fitted thousands of coloured leds: hence, the unusual, and prettily-coloured night-lights. This BAT functions as a government building and town hall in game. In addition to providing your sims with 185 highly desirable civic jobs, it will help alleviate the commercial demand caps that can hinder city development. Given the way that the game is designed, in addition to providing health, education, safety, etc, using rewards is an absolutely necessary part of being able to develop large cities and regions. It sits on a 5x3 lot and will easily blend in with other park lots (such as the SFBT mid-wealth set) that use the Maxis R$$ plain grass. Similarly, given the fact that the building is 13 floors high, it will also work well in a dense city environment. * It is offered as a reward without needing to meet pre-existing conditions. * It is located in the REWARD Menu * It can be placed more than once in a city. * It DOES NOT over-write the ingame town hall (or any re-lotted versions there-of), so can be used in conjunction with the standard Maxis town hall reward. * It DOES NOT over-write any of my other town hall lots (so can be used in conjunction with these as well). --------------------------------------- STATS: Lot size : 5 x 3 Plop Cost: §47,000 Monthly Cost: §1,170 Budget Item: Government Buildings Occupant Groups: Reward, Courthouse Demand Created: Jobs§: 23, Jobs§§: 151, Jobs§§§: 11. Like many inner-city apartment buildings, the ground floor is devoted to retail space.     WanWan Apartments, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- Inspired by the old Won Won Apartments on the Asian Tileset in SC3000, Wan Wan apartments have that real retro vibe of 1980's apartment buildings. These are tall apartment complexes come in at 12 floors to capture the views and are solidly constructed from brick and coloured concrete infill panels. Each building also has underground parking, there are two apartments on the ground floor, four apartments per floor from floors 1 through 9, and the four apartments on 11th and 12th floor apartments are 2 story penthouses with a lovely sun-terrace to lie down and soak up the rays before the 1990's rolled around and everyone was told not to sun-bake. This version is not a 100% accurate copy, but it is true to the language of the architectural style of the original building and this is simply one that I made for myself, but have decided to share with the community.     Millennium Hotel Knightsbridge, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- If you've recently downloaded Harrods http://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/31736-harrods/ you may be wanting some additional UK themed Bats to fill the surrounding area. Fear not; over on nearby Sloane Street, a brutalist monstrosity caught my eye, and so I have brought this into game. When I look at a building from Google Street View, if at a street level it piques my interest, then I'll usually look at it from either Google Earth or Bing to get a better feel for the model. It is at this point that I will determine whether I will do a recreation, or adopt a looser approach. Either way, there will always be elements of each building I look at that in my opinion will stay or go when I recreate the building for SC4. Normally not too many elements of a building get turfed out: those that do are either aligned at an odd angle (rather than the SC4 grid), or are too awkward to be worth my effort. It is rare, however, that a building catches my eye on street level, for me to look at it from above and shake my head with a 'what were they thinking' moment. Millennium Hotel in Knightsbridge is one such building. It caught my eye because there are so few of these sorts of buildings in SC4; now I'll admit I am not a huge fan of brutalist early 1970's architecture: add the inclement British weather & city smog and you have hulking concrete structures that have gone from a light green-grey to the most dreary shade of dirty grey imaginable. But regardless of your opinion on Brutalism, you have to admit that it at least exudes authority and gravitas. So it came as some surprise when I saw all of the truly, truly "twee" additions visible from the air....now, with apologies to Mcmansionhell.com and other spoof websites, please see my take on what got the 'cut' from this Bat and why... ********************************************************************************************************************************************************************** Hopefully my UK friends can get a bit of a laugh out of this: you have been through a fair bit in recent months.     Houston Place Apartments, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- Inspired by the sorts of developments springing up not only across Texas, but in many parts of the world, Houston Place apartments is a fictional apartment building that I created to compete with some of the mid-rise R§§§ apartment complexes which can become quite repetitive in game. These sorts of apartments capitalise on the current architectural trends occurring in the South of the US: boxy, heavy-set buildings that utilise the trend of mixed materials: rubble-stone wall cladding, brick, steel and glass. Despite the assertive (albeit eclectic) use of mixed materials, they are neo-classical in style and quite conservative in the appearance of their street-scape and massing and are targeted at higher-end buyers. This apartment building is 8 floors high (including the roof-top recreation area and pool). The lower floors contain a number of 1 & 2 bedroom + 2 bathroom apartments, while the middle & upper floors are reserved for spacious 3 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom apartments. The 7th floor has only two 4 bedroom + study, 5 bathroom 'sky homes' with wrap around terraces and floor to ceiling panoramic windows. The communal grounds planting showcases evergreens all on well-lit, compact grounds making these lots as good in all density areas. These apartments are presented in 4 options: a 3x4, a 4x3, a 4x4 and an 8x4 lot. The 8x4 lot may take some time to grow (the game has a tendency to break these lots up) but holding the CTRL key while zoning will assist growth chances. They grow on all tilesets.     Description: I mentioned to mattb325 about an idea I had for some 19th century looking commercial shops that you typically find in the historical center of old towns and cities. He was gracious enough to whip up some amazing models, so I was left to try and make some lots that would show these beauties. Mattb made a huge number of variations (16 total models) so I modded them into prop families. There are 9 growable CS$$ lots, sized 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2. The stats are in line with similar maxis buildings. The US looking buildings will grow on the Chicago and NY tilesets, while the UK looking models will grow on the European tileset. I've also included two ploppable landmark lots with CS$$ jobs. Dependencies: Just the mattb325 models - Historic Commercial Project (v1.0) Installation: Simply unzip the file and put the entire folder in your plugins. After all, the in-game dumpy little structure has been filling up any I-HT zone for almost 15 years, so it is probably due for some extra space. Given the initial rather pointless reference to an external game with the naming of this building, I doubt that such an industry could survive all this time in the real world. So in my version, Kane Tiberium makes NutriliteTM vitamins, minerals & dietary supplements products to turn a buck. Please note that this new file doesn't interfere with the original Maxis files and will work for those who have a Maxis blocker installed. This I-HT Anchor lot comes in two flavours: 4x3 and 4x4 (use the CTRL Key while zoning to ensure that you get the correct lot size). It is growable only on medium and high density Industrial zones and provides between 300 jobs. The building itself is based on a boxy mid-century modern design and brings a retro flair to your industrial zones.     Harrods, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- Inspired by the iconic department store on Brompton Rd, Knightsbridge, Harrods is presented as a CS§§§ growable and ploppable lot for your cities. Please be aware that the present day Harrods has been extended and remodelled a number of times since the main building on Brompton Rd was completed in 1905, so this is NOT a strict recreation, but what I present is faithful to the original façade as designed by Charles Stephens, albeit with modifications to make it more game-ready. I have only modelled the front portion of the building. It must be noted that the present building has completely over-run the old streets of 'Queens Gardens' and 'New Place' and wrapped its way around what used to be known as Queen Street and Lower North St (since renamed Hans Rd and Basil St respectively), consuming the old Hans Mansion block and other buildings in the process. Because these streets run at odd angles and curves, even with the FAR roads and other NAM advances, I felt that modelling all of this would make the building almost completely unusable for the average player. Additionally the original building, aligned to Brompton Rd, was slightly wedged shaped - the old line is still somewhat visible under all of the present day roof additions from Google earth along the Hans Rd façade. Naturally I have squared this off to get this into game, which means that the rear of the building is completely fictitious. The present roof junk and extension of the Mansard roof along all facades is modelled - with slight variations by me - on the most up-to-date renovations: you can compare the differences by using the Google earth program (up-to-date) vs. Bing ?birds-eye/Google maps (out-of-date) to see the remarkable difference to the roof-top in recent years. Lastly, in order to fit the building on a maximum of 8 tiles (which will give it at least some chance of growing), I have removed one set of windows near the turret. Given the lag on my computer, I have also avoided modelling the hundreds of bulbs on the Hans Cres and Hans Roads sides. With all of that said, if you are strictly puritanical about recreations being 100% accurate, then please do not download this.     Ennuyeuse Apartments, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- Inspired by any number of the bland, blah and boring apartment blocks that have sprung up all around the world since the turn of the 21st century, I present Ennuyeuse Apartments. These sorts of apartments are clean and functional and appeal to conservative buyers with a safe, neutral colour palette of whites, creams, taupes and of course the newest kid on the neutral block: 'greige' trims and feature walls ('greige' is the colour and word combination of a deep warm grey on a beige base). No doubt in 30 years time, 'greige' will become as despised as the 1970s mission-browns and burnt oranges. All these apartment complexes are typically 8 stories tall, thereby broadening the conservative buyer appeal to the lucrative Asian market (the number 8 - pronounced 'Ba' in Mandarin sounds similar to 'Fa' which means to 'Make a Fortune' - hence the lucky association). However, given that these apartments usually use quite cheap materials with minimal noise and thermal insulation, the only people making a fortune are the developers! Floors 7 & 8 are reserved for the penthouse. The apartments feature other crowd pleasers such as securely garaged, underground parking; lift access; hidden drying balconies (these are the two tall louvered areas on both sides of the building); glass-railings on the main balconies and reverse cycle ducted airconditioning. Open-concept living areas, granite counter-tops, stainless steel appliances, ensuite and guest bathrooms all add to the broad buyer appeal. The planting is non-descript with crowd pleasing evergreens all on well-lit, compact and easy-to-maintain grounds ensuring that strata levies/HOA fees are kept to a minimum. The boxy building is broken up by complex massing and many terraces to allow air and sunlight to permeate the building, both of which were a very serious component of any good early 20th Century architecture. The main feature however is the off-centred granite clad staircase and lift riser with an oversized clock.     Former First Federal Savings and Loan California, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- It's not only "old" buildings that are demolished in the name of the progress. This building was constructed in 1959 and used to stand at the corner of Hollywood and Highland Ave, Los Angeles. It formed and framed a famous part of the view from Graumans Chinese Theatre down Hollywood Blvd. It was demolished in the late 80s for the Hollywood & Highland project (i.e. where the Academy awards are filmed now). While this is not an exact recration of the old First Federal Bank, it is a good example of the Southern Californian mid-century, heavy-set, mid-rise office building. The beauty of these buildings is sheer quality of their materials: polished limestone with contrasting highly polished granite base, crittal steel windows and polished marble forecourts, but "progress", as well as the need to expensively retro-fit many mid-century buildings in shaky California saw these gems consigned to the wrecking ball. To make it a little bit different, I've angled it 45 degrees for a corner lot as there really aren't many such taller buildings in this game and by doing this it complements a lot of the taller angled residentials from Sim Fox, Bixel, HKABT et al. This building is offered as a growable high-wealth mid-rise building on all tilesets. It grows easily, but as it is limited to a 4x4 corner lot (there is one for both left and right corners) it isn't weedy. Hold the CTRL key while zoning to ensure that you get the lot size.     Europa House, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- This is an otherwise dumpy little post WWII inner-city low-mid rise building which is transformed by an unusual (for SimCity at least) butterfly roof on the eighth floor penthouse. The butterfly roof was a design classic of the late 1940's to mid 1950's that created amazing, soaring, light-filled interior spaces that forced the eye up and out along the inverted plane of the roof line through dazzling clerestory windows. A lot of modern buildings are also reviving this simple trend. After WWII, buildings called 'Europa House' seemed to spring up in cities everywhere: perhaps it served as a bricks and mortar reminder of the horrors of war and the constant need to vigilant against extremist views and ideologies (a lesson we seem to have forgotten). Whatever the case, if these buildings still stand today, they are usually fairly low-value commercials, and this is what I have created for the game. The lot comes in two 2x2 flavours: a growable LOW-WEALTH Commercial Services and a growable MID-WEALTH Commercial Office.     City Data Center, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- This is a fictional building, the idea for which was inspired by a BAT by Heblem "LBT Torre de Comunicaciones Telmex" available on CapitalSimCity. In real life data centers are used for many companies who either a) outsource their IT infrastructure or b) wish to house their IT infrastructure in a seperate location from their main offices due to either lack of space or for business continuity and disaster recovery purposes. I made this little building for myself and have decided to share it. It is representative of data centres that are often dotted within denser urban locations: its boxy, heavy set design with raise entry is meant to ensure it can withstand ram-raids and bomb attacks. This data centre will fit into a W2W environment, but also as a stand alone building. It is designed for a 2x2 PLOPPABLE ONLY lot - it really isn't something that you want springing up multiple times in a city - and provides relief from demand caps for Res and I-HT (in real life Hi-tech industry rarely houses its IT infrastructure within the factory walls that it occupies). It is in the Landmarks menu and functions as ploppable IH-T industry.
