Entry 27: Complex Roads are Complex!
Replies: Benedict: Thanks, I really like city overviews hence why you see them quite often from me! mb1.0.2: Welcome back! Really glad your still enjoying the journal and my playstyle! Entry 27: Comples roads are complex
Hey guys and welcome back to Gabtoria. Today were going to try and fix the screw up that is my wives attempts at mayoring. Namely in the way that she seemed to completely ignore any part of the job that she didn't have a major interest in which happened to include traffic which, as you can imagine led to a few issues like this.
Yup, turns out that having a single road into a rapidly expanding town isn't such a good idea. Still, traffic issues aren't exactly uncommon in Gabtoria so I'll just let them deal with it for a bit while I go and find Harry and pester him till he comes up with a solution!
Fast forward several weeks and Harry has a plan (or at least he says he has, he may just be bluffing it to try and stop me pestering him). N ow luckily we had this bit of land that we hadn't filled in at the top of the town, rather handily next to Prenston Junction. Apologising to the people who were expecting houses to built here for them we quickly got to work laying some roads in preparation for our solution. Fast forward some more time and we've made a start on the solution, namely turni ng the top T-junction on the Prenston Interchange into a stack junction via some questionable additional roads. Another couple of months on we have this. A functional and effective traffic relief for the bottom Nomyton junction! Also, as a side note. Remember we mentioned that people complained about us building a huge road on the land they'd expected us to build them a house on? Well we still managed to come up with some housing solutions for them! Not sure how fond of them they are though but were not that bothered, it's a home isn't it? Anyway with the new expansions to the interchange done lets take a look at how it currently looks from above. Well it's definitely not getting any less confusing, so many roads going everywhere. Still it works so let's not mess it up trying to tinker with it. As you might also notice, we gave them some trees to hopefully mask some of the noise of the road. No idea if its worked I've had any mail from that neighbourhood redirect to a shipping container in Gabtoria Harbour. Anyway finally for today, here we have a overview of Nomyton as it stands pretty much completed as of now with much less traffic issues than several months ago. No idea what we'll be looking at next time but hope this suffices for now. Till then. Crown Prince James =http://info.flagcounter.com/QTSG][/URL] - 27

Remembering the Regal Theater
Remembering the Regal Theater by Jay Pharoah In Klatskanee, last week, I looked across the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Adams Street, kitty-corner to the Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Cathedral in the Second Ward neighborhood downtown and noticed a Klatskanee urban trifecta - the KTA bus, the Dos Amigos food truck and window shoppers peering in at the goods on display in the window at Goldstein's Jewelers. What wasn't to love about that view? Well, one thing for sure, I saw a ghost. I saw the ghost of a missing building from a childhood memory. Gone from the layered, contemporary scene was something significant in the history of Klatskanee, the Regal Theater. Demolished in 1981, the Regal Theater was once the largest theater in the state of Wisconsin, and second largest in the Midwest. It was the temporary home of the Klatskanee Symphony, and had begun its life as a vaudeville house. Designed and built in 1924 by architect Marco Delfano, the Regal Theater boasted eight stories of suede upholstered chairs and many, many more memories. Inside, there was a five star restaurant with optional outdoor seating, a Garrett Popcorn shop, and of course, the old Klatskanee Indians official team store. I specifically remember my favorite memory of the Regal, the time I took a pretty girl with me to see Star Wars when it first came out in the summer of 1977. That pretty girl would later become my wife, and that's where we went on our first date. Back then, a movie ticket sold at the Regal for $2.50 each. The Regal Theater had over 4,000 seats, but over time, they just didn't make enough money to keep it open. The Regal Theater was never on the list of historical places, because it closed before those things really had existed. Today, the Eicosakis Biology Research Center is located on its site, where scientists and researchers research the environment, diseases, and other complex things. Of course, like everything else, time has changed, and I've moved on to other theaters, including the really convenient one I built in my basement. There are no ghosts down there. - 3

Golden Hill / Martin Luther King Jr. Freeway
Golden Hill / Martin Luther King Jr. Freeway Note: Welcome back everyone, its been awhile since I uploaded my progress, and as soon as I was ready the whole site went down so now that we are back I will try to began to update regularly again. To start we will be looking at 25th Street at F Street in Golden Hill. I have indicated on the map where this location would be by placing the gold star. This is directly next to the Martin Luther King Jr. Freeway (California Route 94) looking west towards what is so far completed of downtown San Diego. I recognize there is a fire going on now that I look at the picture but I suppose I was not paying attention when getting the images. The Golden Hill neighborhood is directly next to downtown and is one of the first neighborhoods established in San Diego. Not coming far from the last picture, this is taken from the Martin Luther King Jr. Freeway (California Route 94). Because of map limitations I will only be able to go to about as far as 28th Street. I may be able to go as far as the 30th Street bridge but the map is cut off way before the Martin Luther King Jr. Freeway meets the California Route 15 (which turns into Interstate 15 further north). I do not have much knowledge of the Golden Hill neighborhood since I think I have only driven through it once. Because of this I had to look at many street views through Google maps. As said in a previous post, I will try to recreate the city as good a I possibly can, but am not going to even try to attempt to create a fully scaled model of San Diego. I realize Broadway, C Street, and B Street all go over Interstate 5 into downtown and I will eventually make a connection but with the current ramps coming from the Martin Luther King Jr. Freeway, I could tell it was going to be an extremely large hassle. Aerial Views of Central San Diego/Coronado Area The rest of these images are just going to be aerial views of the area and what has been completed so far. The next neighborhood I am planning to work on will be South Park and the southern part of North Park. If anyone has any good ideas for the zoo area and Balboa Naval Hospital in Balboa Park it would be much appreciated. - 6

That Moment of the Year
@Moerp: Thanks for your comment! I live very near the U-Bhf Samariterstrasse, I really like this area of the city! @Tonraq: Many thanks! @Sexysark:P: Indeed, it describes it good because it is quite based in real events Thanks for commenting! @Mymyjp: That's my intention! Thanks! @Ln X: Everybody loves W2Ws, right? Thanks for commenting! @Benedict: Thank you very much! You don't find quality techno/electro in many CJs around here... @slickbg56: Totally "art" imitates life. I'm trying to push this CJ to transmit the vibe of nights like this to the readers, but I'm afraid I'll never be able of imitating 100%... @MilitantRadical: That time of the day. I personally enjoy it a lot (but yeah, I also want to go home). Thanks! @VicRusty: Moltes gràcies! Actually everything you see in this CJ is plopped, including the parking lots. I avoid the zots using the "tastyzots" cheat. @Simul8ter8: Glad you liked it, thank you very much for commenting! @Biff Weissblut: Thanks! ------------------------------------------------------ That moment of the year. Beginning of the Summer. There is one day, when the termometers hit 30 degrees Celsius, it happens around June. That day is widely celebrated in Berlin, a city that has spent months living under a layer of grey until just a few weeks ago. When the sun goes out and the temperatures go up, Berliners just go crazy and spend most of the day outside. The joke is that they do it because they never know when will they see the sun again. The most delicious time of the day arrives around 5 or 6 pm, when the sun begins setting. The warm breeze swings the trees there at Blaschkeplatz. We were sitting in a bench on the square, looking for the last sunrays, Ray-Ban shades all the way. Nothing to do for the rest of the day. One of my friends began messing with the phone, and in a matter of minutes, we were invited to a roof party, which was taking place... right now. After a brief discussion, and in front of the perspective that we had nothing really better to do, we decided to go. The party was not far away, very near the U-Bhf Lübbenauer Tor, so it was time to pass by a Späti and buy some drinks and food. We grabbed only a few beers for each of us. Depending on how the party goes, we'd come back or not. We walked down Lübbenauer Damm till reaching the address we had been given. We crossed the door and climbed the stairs up to the rooftop. We found already people chatting and couples flirting on the staircase, that was the sign we were approaching the party and we were in the correct building. Outside; sun, good temperature, good music (a mix of commercial and more author house, which everybody agreed on), around 40-50 people and a lot of booze. There even was a DJ! Perfect mood all around. It didn't take too much until we began dancing. The sights were privileged, we could see the Allianz billboard of the Treptowers building at the right, until the Potsdamer Platz skyscrapers at the left. Beyond them, the silhouettes of the buildings next to the Zoo can be guessed. Funny friends, cold beer, great temperature, sunny weather, nice girls, great music and good mood. All in one rooftop. All in Lübbenauer Tor. ---------------------------------------------- I'd like to credit elavery, as he allowed me to used his MMPd Sims props he superbly plopped on the beach (http://community.simtropolis.com/journal/4948/entry-24253-fifa-world-cup-special-rios-copacabana/) for my use on this CJ. It was not really hard to photoedit them into my photos, and I think the result turned out pretty good... Liked it? Don't forget to comment/+1! - 12

Scarlett explores Lamare 1: First Impressions
Finally made it! I honestly didn't think I would find my way here, but the subway was an awesome experience! Thank goodness I downloaded the Lamare Metro app. It really made taking the train a lot easier. I mean, look at this map! It's sooo confusing! That's right. I am not a city girl... I grew up in a small town where the main mode of transport was Farmer Tom's horse buggy. Lamare is soo different. Buses, trains, taxis... there are so many options! And the buildings, they're huge! This is the Supreme Court Building: And of course, the National Parliament Building! I never thought I would get to see it in person. But I came here to visit the Cathedral. It was always Mom's dream to come back to this church. Years ago, Mom and Dad met here for the first time. The rest was history! - 3

Return to Ajaw Xulman
Return to Ajaw Xulman In the lush, humid forests of Harar areas well suited for non-domiciled feline traditionalists abound. A group of ocelots and margays has settled in an area northwest of Lake Felis. They hunt in the forests and have established a ceremonial center at Ajaw Xulman. The largest structure is the Chulul Pyramid. Three smaller pyramids, Ix and Ekmuch and Balam are also on site. The Cit Chac Coh observatory allows the population to track the seasons and migration of prey animals. Let's see the site which draws felines from the hinterland in for special events. - 38

Northern France, not far from Lille The life of a typical young Frenchwoman is pleasant, not much different than it was before the Green Revolution of the 2030s that saw a reemerging Cuba dominate the green technology sectors, spreading urban agriculture, recycling, interchangeable parts, healthy living, and conservation across the world. In time, Cuba had annexed the Bahamas and much of Florida in exchange for its patented, easily-replicated desalination technology that turned the sea into a limitless source of drinking water and that had made the post-Communist Cuban regime a favorite of the Middle Eastern leaders. None of that really affected our Frenchwoman, who we'll call Annick. She has taken advantage of Cuban-led reinvestment in urban cores that has turned many of la France's great cities into cheap, vibrant, and self-sustaining areas similar to those of Havana, but in many ways that was a European tradition long before the postindustrial globalization of the early 2000s. There are a few visible differences, though. Urban agriculture and forestry, practiced throughout Cuba during the lean years of the 1990s and 2000s, have come to fill every nook and cranny of European cities such as Lille. Even many of the newest skyscrapers bear trees on them, and the integration of vertical and balcony farming has become a global trend. Farm? Greenhouse? Offices? Who knows? Saarland, Germany. The most visibly "Cuban" thing are the cars. Many cars are reminiscent in style of both 1950s US cars and the Cuban "Frankenstein" cars of indeterminate vintage, and for good reason; 90% of new cars are renewably powered and designed to be made of replicable parts, with most made by Cuban auto titans based on what they know best. Varadero and Marianao are the new Renault and Peugeot for Annick and her family. Timeless and classic...wait, what are those white things? A doctors' strike! Some things never change... Notes on Cuban sustainability: http://pages.vassar.edu/sustainability/video/history-of-sustainability-in-cuba/ http://www.treehugger.com/environmental-policy/why-cuba-sustainability-not-accident.html http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/19/sustainable-farming-in-cuba_n_3112088.html -

We're in Eastern Europe.
These were the only images that Bassan investors had available when they made the decision to go into the former Soviet Union, namely Lithuania. What they found was quite different: Bassan investors acquired and rehabbed over 1,200 units of Stalinist-era housing, painting them in cheery colors. Great profit was to be had. As were tightly-packed buildings at unnatural angles. - 6

Infrastructure improvements part 1
Traffic, my old friend. Part 1 http://imgur.com/a/fuLtx Part 2 http://imgur.com/a/XnJ4v The traffic leading into the second isle becomes unbearable, there has to be a bad junction or a cause somewhere further into town. I think we may have found the culprit... The traffic lights on this junction are the cause, they're not free flowing enough. Solution Roundabout! Much more free flowing, and should solve the problem. The residents and businesses in the way are "politely" asked to move, and most comply, with the rest disappearing mysteriously and leaving empty demolishable buildings. Highway no more Blackwater also turns its attention to this ugly highway section through their city, it's a bit of an eyesore and the land could be used for other purposes. The port area is already as dense as can be, so the land is desperately needed. The first part of the highway is sunk, this might take time. On a rail More transit improvements! This rail line was approved when the roundabout was still in construction, as traffic was still a nighmare. In order to cut commuting traffic to Blackwater Isle, a rail line was constructed between there and the second Isle, which has become known as Kerwan. The line sneaks around the farms and highway interchanges on Rilgar Isle Towards the police station on Rilgar Past the Hospital and school And on to the shoreline of Rilgar isle, opposite the Isle of Blackwater, where land was still vastly cheaper and where Rilgar didn't mind adding a station, due to the possible development and growth. Investment pays off Shh... the first library in the district of Blackwater arrives, along with a university. It's situated next to the station, for ease of access. It's accompanied by another police station, which really starts to make a difference in crime. Rilgar sees high density as the area around the station becomes more accessible. A line is even added to the industrial centre on Rilgar, trying to cut commuting further. Infrastructure section The traffic on Blackwater becomes near unbearable, but not much can be done. All upgrades have been made. Rilgar, seeing the issues Blackwater is having, prepares for the onslaught. The rapidly growing industrial sector needed an upgraded roundabout to cope, so tunnels and an overpass happen. Green belt The highway is sunk, finally. It's taken a while, but looks much better and sound pollution has dropped considerably. Realising its potential benefits, Blackwater council designates the area as a recreational zone, forbidding any construction of other natures. Parks and such pop up, as council funding arrives. Power woes The new quality of life in Blackwater entices more density, and more people to the island, so the power plant is expanded yet again. Rilgar takes yet another hit, as another smog belching plant is added to their land. They may want to consider green energy in the future. At least the crap lake is now cleaned, and desirable to be near now. - 3

Update 03:Expressway Nerd
@Augwich: Thanks! I use Photoshop CS2 to process the images to remove the sawtooth and enhance the color. Update 03:Expressway Nerd I'd like to explain something before the update: the published content and the actual process is unsynchronized. Because I didn't thought about publishing the CJ the at first. So I will not use tunnels and the metro overpass in future updates... Alkanefield is expanding sectorally. You can see that C-1 Alkanefield Loop Expwy is being built. P3 The new bridge"New Kenny Bridge"is built. In addition, the roundabout and the parclo interchange is built to satisfy the traffic demand. C-1. Riverside Rd.,from Kenny roundabout to NW. Downtown streets. The first Pedestrian bridge in Alkanefield The reserved college is prepared to be built. C-1 Expwy and the trumpet interchange. And it is reserved for the "Project Touyama" At the same time. The oil industries become the mainstay of the industry in Alkanefield temporarily. At least it makes the city to be not just in name only, but also in reality. The hill landfill is filled because of the long distance. The bus system begins in this update. The temporary Japanese district name is just for something funny. Please don't mind The Pop Statistics at last. - 3

EP1: It Begins!
Hey guys, first time taking a crack at this whole city journal thing... Goals for this city: try and play the game as it was meant to be played, but still make a nice, (semi)realistic-looking city. The designer side of me would love to play with everything fully unlocked, completely sandboxed, and spend hours dealing with alllll the little details. The gamer side of me would want to mod the thing to hell, make it super difficult, and just try and keep the thing from burning to the ground completely. So I've compromised - no game-changing mods, only aesthetic ones. Can I make a reasonable-looking city? Been working on this one for a few hours, it's already coming along nicely. Population sitting at just under 8,500. Above we can see the original residential district, looking out to commercial/industrial sectors to the south. You can also see the new residential expansion across the interstate. Below is the main highway entrance into the this district (called Central District because, at least at one point, it was the center. Not so much anymore, as expansion has been mostly south and east). After the central district, expansion moved south along the river, with industries sprouting up near the new power and water facilities. Eventually the main road (Rt. 4) continued even further south to the large interstate suspension bridge, with multiple commercial sectors sprouting up along the way. With the booming industry and now commercial zones, new residential space was needed, necessitating multiple crossings over the freeway to the large open fields across the way. Two new residential districts were created, Florence and Maple parks. Florence Park, with its close proximity to the main highway crossing, quickly increased in population, with multiple apartments springing up (and soon a third commercial district to the south). Maple Park, meanwhile, stayed at a lower density, as the alternate main road (Rt. 4a) snaked up around the hill to the north, along the highway. A second overpass, connecting Maple to the Central District, was soon added, in an attempt to ease the traffic along the main overpass between Florence and the now rapidly expanding Commercial and Office Districts along the river. As Florence Park grew, the citizens of Severen decided they needed a proper cathedral for their worship (read: I found an asset I liked), resulting in the construction of St. Augustine's Cathedral (and connecting park) just to the south. The ever-increasing traffic between Florence Park and the Industrial/Commercial sectors also necessitated in the construction of an additional overpass, along with a second entrance/exit for the freeway to accommodate the increased freight traffic (alleviating the heavy traffic burden through Central). Given that the rotary to help feed traffic into Rt. 4 was only recently constructed, an interior park has yet to be constructed, although the town is searching for funds to build a properly-suited Modern Art Sculpture to both intrigue and confuse the populace. The increase in traffic through Florence also necessitated transferring many of the roads to one-way streets, allowing for some fun playing around with the road systems to make it all work smoothly. As Florence's population increased, the city's two landfills became over-burdened with the amount of trash out-put, even with the newly constructed recycling center and incineration plant. In a bid to move the landfill sites out of the residential sectors and away from the city, new landfill sites were built across the river to the south. Gotta love that pollution. While the city did not have the funds to properly implement a new, modern waste-water reclamation facility (read: I haven't unlocked it yet), they were able to secure the funds through a Federal Grant for Renewable Energy Sources and construct a new windfarm across the river to the west, as you can see above. Looking out from the ridge where the new turbines are located also creates a nice view of the city. Want the great location and amenities of Florence Park without the density? Then come take a look at the new development in Orchard Heights! These new, more rural houses are located just to the east of Florence Park, and offer some great views of the city. There are even plans to construct a new university up on the hill. Some infographic views. Traffic has been pretty good, although there are some key points that will begin to see heavy loads as the city's density increases. There are a plethora of recently implemented bus routes, as well as a metro system on the drawing board, to help combat this though. A clearer look at the districts: And the zoning levels: And finally a cimtographer mapping of the city. Also, if you're looking to try out this map (of my own design), here's the workshop link: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=442530395 Any and all comments/suggestions/feedback is welcome! --Augwich/Curvaceous Mite -

Intro into the city
Welcome to the city of Plainsvilla- located 75 miles southwest of Teddy City, Plainsvilla is a majestic city on the plains- Like all cities theres a good side and a bad side- here we will explore that. Belching smokestacks greet those coming into the cities south end- ugly and imposing farmers bring goods to some of these for processing. The city is a mecca for all types of jobs, this is a downside type of job, but it works either way. The Hyde/Brownwell interchange- leading onto Kings 85 this interchange was built in the 1950s. its ugly and imposing, not fitting a city like this- but it works- the interchange comes out at Feldon Ave and Stewart Rd, one of the busier areas in the city. The same intersection- Feldon Ave is seen running towards the offices as it goes noth to south in this beautiful city, heading east to west into residential areas is Stewart Rd. Artificial hills were built to avoid flooding in the area thanks to a high water table, and to add some elevation to this remarkable city. See you next time. -

Welcome Back To 1985. In two Astreins, both see a idea of a small town, on the different spectrum as expected, but how much? These two small towns are basically here to represent the lives of the small towns in a torn nation, and how polar opposite towns, still lead a common lead, to what was once a unified nation. We look firstly, at the small town of Neuwiederitzsch, West Astrein. More modern office buildings fill up the areas of the small town during the Astrein War. This town was a major battle site, and most of the town with a few exceptions was leveled by the communist. Which only, a few years earlier was also nearly flattened during the Second World War. The old Raupenberg Street Hospital, survived the war with small damage, and since restored. A Tract School, to accommodate students, and was quick to build. [Tract meaning Many built and easy to build such as Tract Houses] So ends the tour of the small town, and now across the Glasslow River and across the wall... The town of Kleinapenburg, which was completely flattened originally during the Astrein War... Though it has around 2,000 people living in just two housing towers and one single family residence, and outside of that, it's industry, how great urban planning... Before the split, this was actaully a much larger town, larger then Neuwiederitzsch, but most of that was destoryed during WW2 and the Astrein War, as mentioned. Any traces of historical buildings, is completely gone in Kleinapenburg. Pardon me, "Any traces of historical buildings, is completely gone in Kleinapenburg" is a strong statement, what I really mean is that only two historical buildings left standing, after the 4-7 city blocks of historical homes and buildings. As seen also, the main paved road ends, due to the elevated rail, as well as they ripped up the rest of the road. Warehouses, and industry...The "Ideal Communist City" looks like a train wreck.. Hopefully next time we come back to Astrein the Communist Goverment, can make a neater appearance to show the public. They don't need their reputation to be ruined anymore then it already was.. Communism looks so much like a party, unless your not really in the party. - 2

Welcome to StarCity!
Welcome to StarCity!
After many failed test cities, I've finally perfected my city plan. The result is StarCity! The city isn't complete yet, but if you follow the CJ you can watch it grow with me, and maybe even throw some ideas at the city. After playing for a while I wanted to create a more controlled growth pattern. So I came up with a modular street plan that I can build in whole when building new areas of the city, that connect well together, contains space for most of the important services, and was flexible enough to scale up with the zoning. This is what I came up with...
>
Four equal sections, each 20 squares to a side and divided in half, surrounding an inner rectangle. The zoning in the four outer sections can be whatever the city needs, but in the beginning I start out with the inner half of each section divided between Commercial & Residential, while the outer half is all Residential. The inner rectangle is where I put all the services that a city would need, Schools, Medicine, Fire, Police, Death, and parks. After laying the ground work, and letting the sim run for a bit, you get this... a pretty little proto-city.
And thus... StarCity was born..
In the next update we'll explore the city a bit, how it functions, and look at the Industrial Center.
Thanks for checking out StarCity, and I hope you all are interested enough to come back for the updates.

Soviet War Memorial
Comrade Spy9600: A spy? So you work for the Capitalists?? Thanks for your comment! Comrade michae95l: Thank you! I also love watching Berlin trams pass by! Camarada Kim Sunwoo: Hope to keep the level up on this update! Muchas gracias! Comrade slickbg56: Thanks for commenting! If there are no pics, there is more story, I guess... Comrade pinkindustry: Totally (East) German in here! All the places you see in this new T&R iteration are recreations or semi-recreations of real places, and I try to give as many historical details as possible. I'd say it is my most historically accurate CJ so far. 僚友 Tonraq: Fortunately, this kind of daily life was has been gone pretty much after 1990. Fortunately. Comrade gviper: A wise use of GIMP always gives an extra flavor to the pictures! Thanks for commenting! Camarada Paulobergonci: All blocks of that part of the city tend to be roughly this size. Thanks! Comrade takemethere: It is a sad story, it has to have a sad weather, which in this city is not too difficult to get! The meeting was far from home, but better to do it far. Just in case. The Soviet War Memorial at the Wuhlheide is one of the three Soviet memorials in East Berlin. The fourth lies already at the other side of the "wall of antifascist protection". Almost nobody goes to these kind of places. All soviet memorials in Berlin are a bit different, but they share some common traits. They're eerie, lonely, cold, made of pure concrete and more or less dead grass. This is why Werner had set his meeting there that Saturday morning. The way there, coming from his parents' place at the Landsberger Allee, was long. The tram trip along the Treskowallee had been almost infinite. But finally, he stood in front of the two large columns that marked the memorial entrance, right in front of the An der Wuhlheide road. Werner had never been in this memorial before. He observed the two large Soviet soldiers carved in stone atop of the columns. They were not there to welcome him, but to intimidate visitor who decided to step in this massive concrete setup. Werner was too early for the meeting, so he decided to take a walk. All Berlin Soviet memorials are also massive cemeteries. Out of the approximately 80.000 fallen Soviet soldiers during the Battle of Berlin in 1945; 13.200 are buried in the memorial at Schönholzer Heide, 5.000 at the Tiergarten memorial, 7.000 at the Treptower Park memorial. Around 16.000 Soviet soldiers lie inside the huge concrete blocks here at the Wuhlheide memorial. Werner came close to the blocks. He didn't remember much of the Russian he took at school, but could with no doubt read the names and military ranks carved in Cyrillic alphabet of each soldier buried there inside. 16.000 corpses were surrounding him. There were 500 corpses under each plinth, under each giant soldier head. 500 names of dads and sons. 500 names of soldiers who maybe had raped women on their way to the Reichstag, or who maybe had saved orphan children of their own advancement. Nobody was around. He felt the typical Berlin cold east-west wind around him. The gardens were reasonally well kept for this time of the year. The meeting was at the highest point of the memorial. A large column was erected in an artificial promontory. At the top of this column there was no soldier, but the statue of a woman. Mother Russia was opening its arms to the monument, turning its back to the city. Some say it was made of pure gold. Some say it would be great to steal it. These same people tend not to say that twice. Some minutes later, Werner's date arrived. He was just finishing the cigarrette when he arrived next to Werner. They greeted each other. "So, are you going to tell me why you made me come here and why are you so worried?" "Yes... Dieter... I think the Stasi is on me". EDIT: Due to the impossibility to make an accurate recreation of the Schönholzer Heide and Treptower Park monuments due to the lack of lotting skills, I decided to "invent" a new monument. The city of Berlin has only three memorials, not four. This fourth one is a product of my imagination and the architecture concepts displayed on these monuments. - 98
