Return to Ajaw Xulman

In the lush, humid forests of Harar areas well suited for non-domiciled feline traditionalists abound. A group of ocelots and margays has settled in an area northwest of Lake Felis. They hunt in the forests and have established a ceremonial center at Ajaw Xulman. The largest structure is the Chulul Pyramid. Three smaller pyramids, Ix and Ekmuch and Balam are also on site. The Cit Chac Coh observatory allows the population to track the seasons and migration of prey animals. Let's see the site which draws felines from the hinterland in for special events.

Puddy Tat

On the western coast of Harar, in the Southern Marches district, the Bureau of Feline Affairs operated ferry port serves the undeveloped woodlands with trade and security. Harar is well known for its quality catnip and silver vine, considered by many to be the best in the world. Local council leader Sir Sylvester Puddytat, Marquis of the Southern Marches, has established a plantation house near the port.

Sir Sylvester, Marquis of the Southern Marches

A small community has grown around it. By popular acclaim, the town has been named Sylvestersburg. Well, since Sylvester paid for the town’s construction, it seemed like the logical choice. Let’s hope he doesn’t get a big head from the name.

Luckily, he is sticking to growing catnip and not pursuing singing!

Would it surprise you that they have puddy tats in Sylvestersburg? Let's hope not! After al, they are the residents. For those of you who are Tweety fans, you will be pleased to know that all yellow birds are kept safely in cages in Granny's house. No tweety birds or puddy tats were harmed in the making of this chapter.

To The City

harar-header.jpg

Eις την Πόλιν (To the City)

"To The City," the capital city of Lake Felis, is where we are headed today. The wild, wonderful kingdom of Harar is mostly undeveloped land suitable for non-domiciled felines living the traditional feline lifestyle. There are a few places for felines to gather and transact business. The largest of these is the small town of Lake Felis, located on the cat head shaped lake of the same name. The National Palace, home of Queen Vera, is here. Let's visit the town with a group of felines traveling from the mountains to the city to get a new cardboard box to play in.

As you can tell, transit times are long and speeds are slow. But, such is the way of life in Harar!

Return to Clawmoral

Harar is pretty far south. During the summer, it gets quite warm and humid. Anyone who knows cats knows they like it hot. But, after a while, even the hardiest feline wants a break from hot, humid conditions. The capital, Lake Felis, is located in the subtropical zone. Its ruler, Baron Nik, often treks to the mountains to get some relief from the heat. So does Harar’s ruler, Queen Vera. Vera has selected a lovely hilltop site in the southern foothills of the Schulmappalachian Mountains for her summer residence. The Harar court is itinerant and will follow the queen wherever she goes. Over the course of the year she may be found ruling from Lake Felis, The Wirdleplex, the Feline Quarter of Oak Ridge or her new summer residence, Clawmoral Castle.

Clawmoral Castle, summer home of the Harar government, is accessed by sea from Port Isabella or by a long trek through the feline wilderness. Let's do things the easy way by arriving at the port and checking out the town before heading to the castle.

On The Move

The Harar court is itinerant and will follow the queen wherever she goes. Over the course of the year she may be found ruling from Lake Felis, The Wirdleplex, the Feline Quarter of Oak Ridge or her new summer residence, Clawmoral Castle. As summer winds down and Harar cools off (it is quite hot and humid there in the summer) the Queen and her court are on the move again. This time, they are headed from the mountains near Port Isabella back to the Harar capital of Lake Felis.

27-01_zps357e1484.jpg

Cats are not super fond of cold weather. So, as fall descends upon the mountaintop Clawmoral Castle, the court prepares to head downhill to Port Isabella and then overland through the central plains to the winter capital at Lake Felis.

Let’s bid farewell to Port Isabella. The town will undoubtedly have royal guests again once it warms up again.

The court eventually makes it way to the permanent capital of Lake Felis. The winter population of the city grows substantially as the non-domiciled cats in the hinterland will often come to town to escape the cold. Plus the tuna parties and salmon fiestas are a big draw!

Today, the Queen and Baron Nik are hosting a picnic. Countess Katherine II is coming as well. And, lucky us – we’re invited too! And, the whole village of Port Isabella is coming. Residents are bringing their best in their picnic baskets to make this the fanciest of fancy feasts. Port Isabella

Harar is pretty far south. During the summer, it gets quite warm and humid. Anyone who knows cats knows they like it hot. But, after a while, even the hardiest feline wants a break from hot, humid conditions. The capital, Lake Felis, is located in the subtropical zone. Over the course of the year she may be found ruling from Lake Felis, The Wirdleplex, the Feline Quarter of Oak Ridge or her new summer residence, Clawmoral Castle.

To remain in close contact with her subjects and the outside world, her summer retreat has a Bureau of Feline Affairs-administered ferry port on the nearby coast. The small village of Port Isabella (named for the Countess of Tangaloor, Katherine II Isabella) sprouted up both to provide goods and services to the royal residence but also for traders and passengers arriving at the port. Some local residents have taken up catnip and silver vine cultivation to use in exchange with the non-domiciled population in the hinterland for game and other materials.

24e_zps2ac4dff3.jpg

The BFA-operated ferry port is the town’s link to the outside world. Cobblestone streets run from the port in a loop around the main section of town. The town itself is surrounded by farmland and dense woodlands.

24l_zpsd4854341.jpg

Some farmers cultivate catnip. Harar’s catnip is widely regarded as the finest in the feline realms.

24j_zpsa732451c.jpg

Others grow silver vine, a potent herb cats use for incense and making tea

Next door to the BFA complex is the town chapel

The Hunt Is On

harar-header.jpg

The Hunt is On

In southern Harar the big game migration from the colder mountains for the winter offers our furry feline friends the opportunity for some great hunting. And the exotic beats of this untamed land are a major draw for hungry felines looking for food. Harar exports meats to Schulmania as well as providing an ample supply for its carnivorous citizens. The variety is outstanding here; mice are nice, but here, herd is the word! And today we see a herd of Harar elephants (Elephantus maxiscus) crossing the hills. There’s also plenty of galloping giraffes (girafficus toysrus) and tasty rhinos (rhinoceros stampedious) and a plethora of white tailed deer (venison bambii). With so many meaty prey animals at the ready, it’s like an open air rodizio!

rodizio.jpg

Hungry yet? Let’s head to the grassy hills of southeastern Harar and see who’s on the menu tonight!

hunt01.jpg

I’m sure you have “herd” of the Harar elephant before… it is a great traveler, as it always has its trunk ready to go!

hunt02.jpg

Thanks to Google I have just found out that a group of giraffes, such as those seen above, are called a “tower”. I know they’re tall and all, but that’s kinda weird. I wonder who decided that term…

hunt03.jpg

The giraffes seem to be heading the opposite way from everyone else. Are they smart, or are they headed into a trap?

A pounce and a miss! How embarrassing!

But team work makes the dream work!

Now I did not alter this in-game picture, but it actually looks like the animals are kicking up dust as they move. As Miley Cyrus would say, “Pretty cool!”

hunt09.jpg

You can run, but you can’t hide!

hunt10.jpg

One on one versus a giraffe and a one on one against a rhino… these kitties are tough!

Brackett's Ferry

harar-header.jpg

Brackett’s Ferry

You might not know this, but Schulmania and Harar have a combined, fully in-game functional ferry system linking the entire oceanic coast together. It runs as far southwest as Huddleston and works around the bay and south along Harar’s coast and back up around Cape Claw and all the way up. It also extends all the way down the Wirdleonia River to Schulmanukau. To do this, there is a ferry port in every contiguous game tile to facilitate ferry travel. Originally, these were simply ferry terminals and nothing else. Actually, some tiles have only a ferry terminal and no structures of any sort. Buuuuuuuuuuut,…

With the war underway and concerns growing that Queensferry might try to attack the sparsely populated and lightly defended Harar coastline, the Bureau of Feline Affairs, which has responsibility for Harar’s defense as part of its protectorate with Harar, has decided to add fortifications to these ferry stops. These fortifications will serve to detect enemy activity, deter attack and provide quicker response to incursions. Security will be greatly enhanced.

The first such fortifications have been completed in Harar’s deep south, just west of Cape Claw. The particular ferry port, known as Brackett’s Ferry for the family who has been operating it for the last few years, is in a strategic site; one which has been considered by the BFA Military Command for a major base. In the mean time, the site now features a naval station for the Royal Schulmania Navy as well as a fortified command post and ammunition stores. Let’s see how Harar’s coast will be protected.

bf15.jpg

The Brackett family now has company at the ferry port

bf07.jpg

That company includes new stores of weapons and crews to operate them

bf06.jpg

bf02.jpg

The ammunition and weapons storage area is named by its map coordinates; K-25.

bf16.jpg

A group of tanks, known as “Wampus Cats”, is also at the K-25 site

bf17.jpg

The fenced-off area is constantly patrolled

bf19.jpg

The fortified command post is adjacent to the storage area and houses barracks, storage buildings and other necessary facilities

bf11.jpg

K-25 HQ is located next to the chapel. The mess hall and rec facility are downstairs and offices are upstairs.

bf05.jpg

The barracks house four hundred personnel. There are also two wells for fresh water inside the compound.

bf12.jpg

The scenery nearby is nice. But, watch out for the large guns watching the horizon!

bf14.jpg

Adjacent is the Brackett’s Ferry Naval Station, the corner of which is peeking out at the top right of the photo above

Utmärkt

The vast interior of Harar remains largely undeveloped and populated with feline traditionalists. But, anyone who knows felines knows that seafood is an ever popular dish. The Bureau of Feline Affairs, which manages Harar’s foreign affairs and defense, also provides for feline services nationwide. In addition to medical facilities and defense outposts, the BFA has integrated Harar into a comprehensive ferry system with Schulmania. Fully functional Maxis-based ferries link every coastal tile in both countries. At one such ferry stop, the small village of Utmärkt developed. Located midway along the eastern shore of Huddleston Bay, Utmärkt consists of a small village serving mainly as a marketplace for freshly caught seafood. Felines from the interior come here to trade for fish and receive services from BFA agencies. Mayor Bo Cephus will show us around today, market day, when our non-domiciled friends in the hinterland descend upon the site for fish.

Villa Nepeta

harar-header.jpg

Villa Nepeta

BFAHQ.jpg

At the Bureau of Feline Affairs building in Lake Felis, Agriculture Commissioner Gray Bunnee read with excitement a report indicating a great new spot was located in western Harar, in the Purring Plains, for growing silver vine.

28944_20111122T163354_0_jpg_525x500_q85.jpg

Actinidia polygama (also known as Silver Vine) is a non-toxic plant in the Actinidiaceae family. It grows in the mountainous areas of northern Harar at elevations between 500–1900 meters. Silver Vine is a vine that can reach up to 5–6 meters in maturity. It is a deciduous climber and is frost tender. The petiole leaves are silver and white in color and between 6–13 cm long and 4–9 cm wide. These colorful markings make the plant identifiable from afar, until the flowering season when the leaves turn completely green. The flowering season lasts from late June to early July, in which the plant bears white flowers about 2.5 cm in diameter. The longevity of an individual flower is 2–3 days. At this time, the plant also starts to develop small, yellow to yellow-red, egg-shaped, fleshy, and multi-seeded fruits, which mature in September to October. The fruit is approximately 1.5 cm wide and 3.0–4.0 cm long. The inside of the fruit resembles the common Kiwifruit, but it is orange in color rather than green. The Silver Vine plant requires moist, well drained soil, and partial shade to full sun. It is a fast growing vine that makes for good cover on a fence or trellis. It is becoming increasingly popular as an edible fruit crop. And, it is known to have an effect on the feline population not unlike that of catnip. This exciting news caused the commissioner to task Maid Marian Lye-Brerian to establish a villa to cultivate these vines.

Let’s see this fabulous new villa… and perhaps we can try to get some free samples of silver vine wine, a specialty of the house, thanks to the efforts of brothers Ernest and Julio Gatto. The villa features the main house and a winery and a storage building.

Mustering

harar-header.jpg

Mustering

Baron Nik, husband of Admiral Hestorb, has been at home reviewing military information from Schulmania. The news from the eastern front has not been good lately and he is growing concerned that Harar’s dependence upon the Bureau of Feline Affairs Military Command for its defense may put it at risk of invasion if the BFA’s forces are depleted in the defense of Schulmania.

nikhse.jpg

He decided that it’s about time that Harar recruits soldiers to send to the BFA. And, surely, plenty of residents will want to join in the fight

lf184.jpg

He went to the palace to have an audience with Queen Vera and to the BFA offices to discuss his plan

Baron Nik’s plan was warmly received by the BFA and by Queen Vera. He was authorized to canvass the land from coast to coast to assemble a force estimated to be 8-10,000 strong and march them north into Schulmania for training in The Wirdleplex. The force, to be called the Royal Harar Volunteers, would be a new division fighting under the BFA Military Command structure.

lf181.jpg

Nik, promoted to General in the BFA Military, wasted no time circulating around Lake Felis to recruit volunteers

CatYou.jpg

battleready1.jpg

His first recruit was so eager that he came with his own armor!

lf182.jpg

As Nik made the rounds about Lake Felis, more and more volunteers agreed to join him on this noble quest

lf185.jpg

Nik became concerned that he had too many volunteers from the capital… nearly 1/3 of the citizens were ready to leave their homes at a moment’s notice. Though it would make Lake Felis much smaller, he thought it would still be prudent to take the larger force.

lf183.jpg

Nik stopped at the national cathedral to secure blessings upon his journey around the country and his upcoming quest before heading out into the Harar wilderness in search of recruits

coast1.jpg

His journey carried him west past Huddleston to the coast and netted him hundreds of volunteers

coast2.jpg

He went east, up and down the coast from Tangaloor

battleready2.jpg

In all, Nik’s volunteers far exceeded the estimates by military planners. He led a force of 28,857 recruits in a quick march north across the Schulmappalachian Mountains and toward The Wirdleplex… and destiny.

The Countess of Tangaloor

Fleet Captain von Bremerhaven, Governor of the Bureau of Feline Affairs Wirdleplex, was very pleased to see that his daughter, Katherine Isabella, graduated as the valedictorian of her class at Busscastle College, the same institution where the BFA Governor-General and the Supreme Wirdle studied. Of course, now the young lady needs a job; one befitting both her lineage and her talent. He brought this up at the BFA Privy Council meeting. Queen Vera offered to give her a title in Harar. The newly-formed County of Tangaloor in eastern Harar is a small mountainous area, best known for its catnip, impressive seaside cliffs and its important feline shrine. This would be a great resume-building assignment for Katherine to get her start in politics.

And now, without further ado, allow me to introduce Katherine, Countess of Tangaloor, who will be referred to as Katherine II to differentiate between her and the Regent of Wirdleonia.

k2pic1.jpg

k2pic2.jpg

Countess Katherine II is the newest member of the Schulmania feline family. Please, welcome her warmly.

Katherine, who finished her degree in Feline Studies at Busscastle College as an expert in feline anthropology (the felines refer to it as “felinology”), would be a good caretaker for the shrine in Tangaloor, an important pilgrimage site in Harar. As her first official act, even before she left The Wirdleplex for Harar, she commissioned a catnip granary and a villa for herself. Inspired by the existing shrine and the Sacred Precinct near her alma mater, the new structures will be in a formal Temple Style and built to blend in perfectly with the seaside shrine.

Tanga01.jpg

The rocky shore of eastern Harar seems like an unlikely place for an important feline shrine. But this is where Katherine will begin her political career.

Tanga02.jpg

The catnip granary houses the single largest cache of the herb in the feline world. Central Harar has several premium non-domesticated catnip strains which produce some of the finest catnip tea available. This storage facility will be very welcome to the feline populace.

Tanga03.jpg

The complex, when completed, includes the temple, the granary and the villa. Adjacent, a catnip garden awaits weary pilgrims and travelers.

Tanga04.jpg

Harari vessels arrive carrying pilgrims or catnip traders

Tanga05.jpg

The Countess was visited by her father, who was impressed with the quality of the granary and villa. And he was also pleased with the new crop of catnip.

Tanga06.jpg

The shrine, Temple of the Ceiling Cat, has been at this location for many years. The Ceiling Cat is a central part of the beliefs of the sect known as the Cheezburgerites. Perhaps you have heard of them?

Tanga08.jpg

The Cheezburgerites believe that the Ceiling Cat will save them from the doom caused by the evil Basement Cat…

Tanga09.jpg

But, at Katherine’s villa, there is no doom on the horizon – only fresh catnip salad. Want some?

Tanga11.jpg

This will be a focal point for those traveling through Harar

Tanga12.jpg

Katherine expects to offer hospitality to many Harar and Schulminions as they pass through

Tanga13.jpg

Katherine’s catnip patch will surely become a popular attraction in Tangaloor

Tanga14.jpg

The Countess of Tangaloor is starting small, but with her talent and ambition, she is certain to advance far in the feline realm. Welcome, Katherine II!

Interregnum

Interregnum

The Royal Protectorate of Harar has joined Schulmania in a period of mourning for the passing of Admiral Hestorb’s first life on 15 December 2011. (The official announcement is http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/journals/698/entry-14709-admiral-hestorb/ and includes a link to the official tribute page) The Admiral’s first life has been selected to reside in Stovokor, home of the honored warrior dead. Her second life has begun and she will resume her throne in Schulmania, there to reign indefinitely with her new life and her seven additional ones. Before beginning her official duties, she will take an extended leave of absence to rest with her husband, Baron Nik, in Lake Felis.

16meeting.jpg

Baron Nik informed the local citizens that the eyes of the feline world will be fixed upon Lake Felis when the Admiral arrives

16lf1.jpg

Local shopkeepers expect to make a fortune on Admiral-themed merchandise

16lf2.jpg

Some residents are leasing extra rooms in hope of making money from the expected hordes of her admirers

16lf3.jpg

Anticipation is mounting…

16lf4.jpg

And excitement builds as word reaches town that the baron’s entourage is nearing the town

16terrace.jpg

The lakeside terrace has been readied for a welcome party

16bfa.jpg

The Bureau of Feline Affairs compound is prepared for its highest profile time ever. Governor-General H. J. “Hoppy” Franciflora will be in residence for an extended period as he helps Admiral Hestorb begin her second life. Lake Felis will be the center of the feline diplomatic universe.

16royalpalace.jpg

Queen Vera will be pleased to have so many family members visiting. The Governor-General will be staying at the Royal Palace along with her husband, Chancellor Mooky, and several members of the BFA Privy Council coming from The Wirdleplex.

16baronnik.jpg

The Lady of the Hour, however, will be staying at her husband’s manor on the outskirts of Lake Felis. Château de Fancy Feast - the seat of the Barony of Lake Felis, center of power for the Harar capital region. Here, she will rest and prepare for her second life in Schulmania.

She will not make any public appearances during this transition time. However, she will be out and about in Lake Felis and her many fans will be excited to see her in action again. Having left her throne in capable paws, she can focus on preparing to reassume a leadership role in her nation and its military. And this leadership is sorely needed, lest Queensferry seize this transitional period as an opportunity to make inroads into feline territory.

NikPic1.jpg

Admiral Hestorb and Baron Nik thank you for your kind thoughts and warm regards. The best part of feline life in Schulmania is that all nine lives may be lived to the fullest. And though one cannot feel the purrs from this computer screen; the warmth is real, generated from the hearts of those who remember.

Admiral Hestorb: first life 11 December 1997, second life 15 December 2011. Fama semper vivit.

National Maps

To celebrate the anniversary of Harar’s appearance on Simtropolis, Queen Vera is pleased to release the first official maps of the protectorate. Cartographers from the Bureau of Feline Affairs have fanned out across the nation, making a most comprehensive map of the land.

rocky2.jpg

… to the rocky shore of Huddleston Bay…

lake1.jpg

… to the capital on the shore of Lake Felis, teams have been to every part of the nation

With the new map in hand at her palace in Lake Felis, Queen Vera has decided on some changes to the nation. Prompted primarily by security concerns regarding a possible invasion by Queensferry, internal divisions will need to be created for stationing Bureau of Feline Affairs military forces. After consulting with BFA military leaders, eleven districts have been created.

palace15.jpg

Of course, she knows that some of the divisions are academic, as there are virtually no settlements and many boundaries simply demarcate military patrol routes. But, hey, why not have a little fun with it?

In addition to “the marches”, some of the new districts have been elevated to provide titles for distinguished felines and increase the ranks of the nobility. Perhaps the most notable of the new ranks is the barony granted to Nik, husband of Admiral Hestorb, the Queen of Schulmanicus.

mall1.jpg

Eager to see the new maps? Let’s head over to the Lake Felis Mall…

Harar_Provinces_NAMES.jpg

Harar_Topographic.jpg

The Royal Protectorate of Harar is extremely excited to offer this complete and accurate set of maps to the general public. For the first time, the entire nation can be seen in all of its glorious detail. At present, there are two permanent settlements: a small port on the west coast in Huddleston and the capital on the south shore of Lake Felis. The Bureau of Feline Affairs is interested in constructing outposts in strategic points along the east coast and in the interior to aid in national security. Perhaps these may one day grow into towns of their own…

While we await more from Harar, feel free to enjoy our birthday party!

Entertaining Lake Felis

Lake Felis is the permanent capital of Harar. Interestingly enough, it is situated on the southern shores of none other than Lake Felis. There are very few developments in this nation of predominantly traditional felines leading non-domesticated lives. But, paperwork needs to be done somewhere. And of course Queen Vera is not inclined to sit under a tree waiting for a rainstorm to end. Therefore, the small city was built along the most feline of landforms. The capital remains at Lake Felis but the government follows the court. Queen Vera is in residence about half of the year. The other six months, the itinerant court migrates northward to the mountains and then gradually makes its way to Lake Felis again via Huddleston and the coast. This pattern allows for the queen to avoid the often oppressive heat and humidity associated with a Lake Felis summer.

Not many towns can boast of being situated on a cat shaped lake. What a pity! Lake Felis is a small, rustic capital for a highly mobile and non-domiciled population. To us, it looks like a quaint old town. But, to a feline living in the open hills of Harar, coming into Lake Felis is like Vegas on steroids. They are dazzled by the bustling activity and mighty structures. So, as we explore the capital, maybe we, too, will feel the wide eyed wonder of the undomesticated feline.

Lake Felis is a bustling community with a lot of activity going on both in the city and its environs. Now that the weather is cooling down, the royal court has moved back from its summer residence in the northern mountains near the Schulmania border. Plenty of activities in the arts and entertainment venues await itinerant courtesans and the Lake Felis populace.

lf-21stadium.jpg

The National Theater serve’s as Harar’s largest entertainment venue. Completing the entertainment complex is the Harar Museum of Fur & Whiskers.
