  2. The Mean Streets of Gotham

[low guttural voice] Thursday, October 13th. Two months of recreating Gotham have turned me into a nocturnal animal... It's a big city. I can't zone everywhere... Lately, I've been focusing on naming all the main streets based on the map in the "About this CJ". I've placed Signpost markers for the dirt paths on the city's edges and at intersections, for now. As time goes on, they will all be upgraded to cobblestone roads ubiquitous in the 19th century, and finally, to the contemporary asphalt one-way roads, streets, and avenues that are rife with crime. For some of the streets, I either had to change or create new names because the scale of the region didn't exactly fit the map. So far, I've only expanded Stage 2 of my Gotham project on the small Tricorner Island, but the region's population has already swelled to a little over 300k. The next step is to stop all cities during the year 1835, or approximately 200 in-game years, to build an extensive network of Victorian-Era railroads. (One of the opening shots of "Gotham By Gaslight", a great animated film that blends two things I love: 19th-century architecture and the city of Gotham) Lastly, the three main parts of Gotham (Downtown, Midtown, and Uptown) are still not populated enough to be overrun with crime, but I expect that to change with the train network connecting all parts of the city. So far, the most congested pockets are leveling out at a little over 70 crimes a month. My goal is to raise those numbers to triple digits. But in the Tricorner area which I'm using as a template for how I want the rest of the city to look for Stage 2, we already have some pretty unhappy agents of chaos! So if the area that I've expanded so far is any indication, 1) the entire region's population will be well over a million people, and 2) Gotham City will be crawling with crime, riots, and urban decay!

After the previous state archives burned down, this building was built to be as fire proof as possible in the 19th century, including having no electric light, compensated with the large windows. It ceased its original function in 1968 and now is an events space. It has around 100 CS$$$ jobs and can be found in the landmark menu. This version is for your dense old, but not medieval, city center grids. Could be turned into a community college just as well. More details, ongoing and upcoming work in my BAT thread :

The character of this building is more Klara ( the area north of Gamla Stan - Old Stockholm ) than Vasastan ,dating from the 18th century, having 3.10 m ceilings, flashy shops on the ground floor, being on Drottninggatan ( the busiest pedestrian shopping street in the city ), but the size and appearance was great for sc4 and 16 m corner lots in the area are precious few. Two mid 19th century buildings scaled to fit SC4 grid. In the past, the yard buildings were for lower income, overcrowded and considered slums, nowadays there is little if anything $ about Central Stockholm, they are expensive mostly single bedroom apartments. I made the 1x2 $, so that they grow first and get replaced with larger wealthier lots, while some remain in the gaps inbetween them. Includes 6 growable lots : 2x2 R$$ 130, CS$$ 130 1x2 R$ 60 and 70, CS$ 60 and 70 Medium zone Chicago tileset only Recommended:

Glasshouse Cafe, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- Another one of those files where a single lot can provide a multiple of uses, the glasshouse cafe is a fictional bat that came about after I was asked to release (as a standalone prop) the table/umbrella/chairs that I use as part of making other bat scenes. The prop looked rather lonely on its own, so I batted the cafe to match. These sorts of cafes and restaurants were very popular in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, when large areas of glass/glass roofing were really something of a status symbol (never mind the fact that air conditioning hadn't been invented yet!): often such structures were built on lakes or within lovely gardens: the idea was the pre-cursor to today's indoor/outdoor living. This bat is on a 2x2 lot and the glasshouse area and its deck overhang the back of the lot. The lot can be placed on water or land and is slope tolerant. As can be seen in the images, the lot is quite versatile: equally useable with in-game water, canals, ploppable water, ploppable rapids (in case your diners want to view kayakers being dashed upon rocks while enjoying champagne and canapes), hillsides, etc. MMPS can be placed underneath the deck area. The lot is found in the landmark menu and provides CS$$$ jobs. It therefore requires road access, water and power. --------------------------------------- STATS: Lot size: 2x2 Plop Cost: $776 Bulldoze Cost: $40 Pollution at Centre: 1 (air) /1 (water) /4 (garbage) Pollution Radius: 2/3/0 Demand Created: R$ 33, R$$ 22, R$$$ 8 Power Consumed: 1 Mwh Water Consumed: 6 Gallons Occupant Groups: Landmark; CS$$$. --------------------------------------- NOTE ABOUT DARK NITE vs MAXIS NITE: This download contains TWO model files; one for dark nite users and one for the standard Maxis nite. If you are unsure whether you have a night-darkening mod installed, then choose the Maxis night version. If you use the dark nite version, you will need a dark nite mod. 12. Community Hall

    Version 1.0.0

    1,956 Downloads

Community Hall, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- Made as a request, this building is based on the Ballhaus Ost in Berlin. Originally a mourning hall, it has since been converted to a community space and theatre. Normally, when I receive a request, before I even agree to do it, one of the first things I do is look for similar BATs or lots that already exist. Certainly I wasn't expecting to find the Ballhaus Ost, but I was even more surprised to see that the broader definition of community halls did not exist either. This is despite the fact that community halls are everywhere in real life. In real life, community halls were generally built for smaller towns or satellite suburbs near schools, churches, main shopping streets, train stations and so forth. Most of these buildings were constructed in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries on council land. In many cases they were funded entirely by the council. They have an important function to play in community life: they host a whole variety of different uses and are rented out to community groups at a very low cost. So things like free amateur theatre, pop-up art exhibitions, Alcoholics Anonymous, flower judging competitions, Cat and Dog fanciers judging, Rotary club meetings, Country Womens Association meetings, Church groups/Bible studies ,etc are all likely to take place in these venues. This BAT is typical of the style: quite utilitarian and non-descript, even though the buildings themselves have classical elements. It is on a 2x3 lot and it is found in the reward menu. It offers a handful of jobs and will boost surrounding desirability for business and residential, as well as provide landmark, park and mayor effects. It needs road, power and water. There is no monthly cost. There are no restriction as to how often these lots can be placed. --------------------------------------- STATS: Lot size: 2x3 Plop Cost: $20 Bulldoze Cost: $90 Monthly Cost: $0 Wealth: Medium Park Effect: 80 over 15 tiles Landmark Effect: 80 over 10 tiles Mayor Rating: 8 over 440 tiles Pollution at Centre:1 (air) /1 (water) /3 (garbage) Pollution Radius: 2/3/0 Demand Created: R$ 12, R$$ 5 Power Consumed: 5 Mwh Water Consumed: 3 Gallons Occupant Groups: Reward; State Fair, Dog Magnet, YIMBY, Sim Crowd Day small. --------------------------------------- NOTE ABOUT DARK NITE vs MAXIS NITE: This download contains TWO model files; one for dark nite users and one for the standard Maxis nite. Federal Style Row Homes (CP Row Homes), by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- These old world, charming, four-story row homes typify the federal style of architecture that reached its height of popularity in the US from 1785-1815. This style of architecture is classical, restrained and dignified: the buildiings celebrate local, simple materials and beautiful, georgian proportions are the hallmarks of this style. LaFayette Square homes, St Louis, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- These old world, colourful row homes hail from LaFayette Square in St Louis and were made as a request. These are Second Empire styled houses which were popular in the US from about 1865-1900 which borrowed from French Renaissance precedents: so you will see mansard roofing, decorative wrought iron trellis-work, dormer windows and other elaborate facade details. In game, these houses are 8m wide mid-wealth homes and have a number of colour variations in a family so you will get a different combination every time it grows. These buildings are also very slope tolerant. They grow on a 1x1 or 1x2 lot on the Chicago and New York tilesets only. Like all of my work, these are suited to both CAM and non CAM cities alike. The Johnson Building, constructed in 1883, was a commercial building in Portland, OR. Located at the northeast corner of Front and Ankeny streets, the Johnson Building featured a cast iron facade and brick on timber construction. On left of Minor White's 1939 photo below: This building met the wrecking ball along with the rest of the block when the Harbor Freeway was constructed. Caveats: I've added bays to the width to span 16m. Real facade closer to 12m. Optional dependency: SCILT for your choice of sidewalk Install: Unzip to Plugins. Remove: Remove Plugins/CT14/W2W Johnson Building Models: 5 variations 2 story, 5 variations 3 story. Real building was 3 stories with a gray face. Lots: All lots are Growable 1x2 in all tilesets. Setback of 2 tiles matches Smalltown USA and other common lots. All lots use prop families for the building model, to help avoid the game's tendency to place more than one of the same building together. 24. Starting a thread for a project I'm tentatively titling STEAM, aka "The Sands of Time Era-Adaptive Mod " (previously STAMP). What It Is: STEAM is intended as an all-inclusive mod pack that would allow players to develop a 19th century settlement into a modern-day metropolis over the course of 150+ years. The mod will be split into a series of historic periods. Each period will have a unique mix of building styles, reflecting the architecture of the period in question. Additionally, each period will have a unique gameplay experience, reflecting the technological and social developments of the time. How It Works: The basic idea is to create a core set of plugins, which would remain in place for any STEAM city, plus a series of period-specific plugin folders. The core set of plugins would contain all of the models, lots, and props, required for STEAM, as well as a set of core gameplay mods. Meanwhile, the period-specific folders would contain: A) a set of lot blockers, to control which buildings grow during different periods; B) a set of menu blockers, to control which ploppable items and rewards are available to players in each period; C) mods to update automata, props, and textures according to the period in question. The period-specific folders will also include some additional gameplay mods. For example, a mod to reduce road traffic speeds and personal vehicle usage during the horse-and-wagon era, then increase both of these properties after the invention of the automobile. There might be also be mods to adjust the ways cities develop during different periods, such as a mod that widely reduces desirability during the Great Depression. A Quick Note: In a perfect world, this would be something that I could release on the STEX or LEX. That said, I'm expecting a laundry list of dependencies. So this might end up as a purely personal project. But I'm going to proceed with the goal of making this widely available. What's Next: To start, I'm compiling a list of possible models, prop packs, texture packs, and automata mods suitable for the late 19th century. After that, I'll be creating a series of test lots and figuring out the best way to ensure the lots adapt from one era to the next -- specifically, how to update historical props with era-appropriate replacements from one period to the next. I'll also be using this space to sketch out the project in greater detail, including some more information about features I'd like to include, some of the problems that will need to be solved, and a list (or several lists) of assets that need to be compiled and/or created. 25. Passenger Ferry Terminal V3

    Version 1.0.0

Passenger Ferry Terminal V3, by Mattb325. --------------------------------------- A "ye olde worlde" style ferry terminal for your cities. While I quite like the look of the Maxis Passenger Ferry Terminal, and I also like the fact that both passenger ferries and car/passenger ferries are far and away the cheapest and most efficient form of public transit that never suffers from congestion...but after 15 years of seeing the same ferry buildings in game, it's time for an upgrade. This is the last of four fictional buildings which I made for just that purpose. This passenger ferry building is a new lot and it does not replace or interfere with the in-game building (or any of my other ferry lots). It can be used in conjunction with the Maxis passenger ferry terminal or any other similarly modded passenger ferries available. This ferry is also easy to place along the shore line - if you have ever placed the in game version, you will have no problems using this lot as the principles are identical. Additionally, it uses standard maxis pavement textures (rather than a batted base like the in game version) so the lot will blend in with any sidewalk mods that you have. Just like the in-game lot, this lot must be placed adjacent to a street/road and it also must be placed across both land and water. Ferry buildings are a great alternative/supplement to bridges, and I use them to ease congestion on the road network and a ferry terminal helps stop the 'no job' zot that often plagues residential areas by providing a super fast mode of travel. It is crucial to note the Passenger Ferry Terminal is a separate network from the Car Ferry Terminal. Ferries that leave from a passenger ferry terminal do not use a car ferry terminal and vice versa. Now, this is no different from the function in the vanilla rush-hour game, but as there are so few custom ferry terminals available for download, it is important to point out. Therefore, I recommend placing this at least twice in any city tile (on opposite shorelines) and in a neighbouring city connected by water to get the most use. It is also important to note that ferries do not work if the water is too shallow, bridges too low, or if the edges of your cities and waterways are at wildly differing elevations. It has similar stats in terms of capacity and monthly cost to the Maxis Passenger Ferry Terminal, but provides more jobs. This old-world, brick and stone terminal building is slightly larger than the other ferry buildings I have released and visually looks more suited to denser older-style environments. I say visually, because ferry terminals don't suffer from congestion unlike other modes of transport. The other thing about this series of passenger ferries is that they will conform to 90%, if not all of, the available seawall sets: as long as the seawall set has left/right overhanging lots (which are typically used as under-bridge lots) and are not too wide or deep, then they will function perfectly so you can keep a uniform look to your seawalls and not be forced to pick one that I choose. Obviously the passenger ferry building is found in the water transit section of the transportation menu and crucially it can only be placed in a city where in-game water is present; it does not work on canals or ploppable water. --------------------------------------- STATS: Lot size : 2x4 (to be placed on land and water) Plop Cost: §200 Bulldoze Cost: §30 Occupant Groups: Transportation, Strikable Transit, Ferry, Passenger Ferry, Water Transit Catalog Capacity: 900 Wealth: Medium Wealth Demand Created: Jobs§§§: 1, Jobs§§: 12, Jobs§: 17. You must choose only one file - depending on which version you use. If you are unsure whether you have a night-darkening mod installed, then choose the Maxis night version. If you use the dark nite version, you will need a dark nite mod.
