  1. "The Earthquake Resistance and Retro-Fitting Ordinance requires that money be spent on design, engineering and construction of earthquake-resistant buildings, and also on retro-fitting older buildings constructed before the advent of modern techniques. When this ordinance is enacted, building are better able to withstand tremors and shaking, and will sustain less damage during an earthquake. It can be pricey, though, since the monthly cost of this ordinance is based on the number and types of buildings in the city."
  2. The punishment

The Sacred Pond of Forces is a revered site and a holy place in the New Udananian religion of Sulkourbanism. According to the ancient religious scriptures, surprisingly confirmed by the means of modern research, the site has unusual, positive properties that propagate throughout the entire land, assuring proper balance across the region and between the tribes. However, the Businesspeople tribe decided to turn this holy place into a tourist paradise, paving sacred forests over in hopes of quick profit. This antagonized some of the other Udananian tribes but, what is even worse, outraged many Revered Spirits of the St'ropoli Dimension including Sulka himself - the chief Udananian deity, The Beginning and End of All Cities. Ultimately, heavenly circles decided to punish the Businesspeople for their defiance - to the maximum possible extent - as the poll results show. The citizens of Dollar Grove heard a couple of frighteningly loud bangs early in the morning. As local police started to answer the first calls from concerned citizens, it became clear that something happened in the nearby "Sacred Pond Tourist Resort and Spa". As dark smoke rose into the sky from the nearby tourist complex, it became clear that Sulka, enraged with the Businesspeople's sacrilegious behavior, sent two meteorites towards the Pond to completely purge any man-made buildings from it. The drama continued into the noon as two, fairly weak but "well-placed" earthquakes shook some of the other Businesspeople towns, destroying key infrastructure installations and also cutting R1 highway into two pieces, severing communication and travel towards Dollar Grove. But the culmination of the Businesspeople's retribution for their sin came in the early afternoon as, completely out of the blue, a volcano erupted in the middle of their capital - Profit Hill! When the disaster dust finally settled, the damage across all four cities was assessed. The tourist resort and Profit Hill were struck hardest. Smoke from the burning forests and extensive loss of property were clearly visible in the ESA pictures taken from orbit. Miraculously, no loss of life was reported. This was partially possible due to the heat-resistant office furniture imported from the Smileyfaces which allowed all workers to use their desks and file cabinets to surf on the lava down to safety. In the aftermath of the destruction that Businesspeople cities suffered, an emergency meeting of the Coastal Summit was called in. The tribes involved in this organization (Altruists, Slackers, Gridlayers, Residents, Smileyfaces and Businesspeople) tried to discuss the situation and determine if there were any ways in which they could render aid to the misfortunate tribe. The representatives gathered, provided following statements... The widespread destruction in Profit Hill had some significant consequences for the Businesspeople. High numbers of internally displaced persons was the most significant problem as scores of people lost their homes. Even huge corporations lost their headquarters to the volcano and the ensuing blaze. In an attempt to manage the wave of homeless Udananians and provide unfortunate companies with new bases of operation, large areas North and Northeast of the capital were opened to development and handed over to the evacuees. These new areas were built without any particular order or plan in mind, apart from the basic Businesspeople city-building concept. Namely, priority to commercial development along busy roads. However, most of these new areas developed as a result of a pressing necessity rather than strategic planning or urban science. This tendency resulted in a dynamic development of low-density zones in Breadwinner Ponds and Northern Profit Hill. What is more, the town named Dividend was also established North of the Businesspeople capital. The main features of this new town are low density zoning, unintentionally mixed wealth levels and commercial "islands" located in the busiest areas. As mentioned previously, some of the evacuees were moved to Breadwinner Ponds - a city which was not affected by any catastrophic events. What is more, it sits on the R2 highway, it is co-owned by the technologically-advanced Smileyfaces and is a reception point for most of the disaster aid coming from the East. Due to these advantages, it proved much easier to accommodate disaster survivors in this city. The promised Smileyface technical assistance and advanced equipment allowed the evacuees to truly slingshot back to normal lives in the shortest possible time. The new city borough is far more advanced compared to Dividend. Artificial water canals, extension of Profit Hill's tram line, luxurious apartments and lots of green areas (including some still under construction) are the highlights of this new (if unplanned) neighborhood... One more impact of the recent events, though from a cultural and social standpoints, was a sudden rise in spiritual and religious awareness among some of the Businesspeople. In many cases, anger against Sulka and his punishment, accelerated secularization throughout some social groups. However, spirituality experienced a noticeable revival in those more interested in philosophy and religion. The tendency became so prominent that a new university specializing in humanities and theological studies was established in Breadwinner Ponds. Its academic value, beautiful surroundings and the vicinity of the city hall became a "visiting card" of the local area. Another significant, if a little mundane, gathering spot was established for those who wished to discuss matters of life, gods and morality in a carefree fashion with a pint in one hand and a cigar in the other. To that end, a Smileyface couple established a small pub on a road connecting both parts of the city - "The Mindless Philosopher Inn". A place "Where alcohol percentage is as heavy as a nihilist's mind". The troubles around The Sacred Pond of Forces had a sad and fairly shocking result. The controversial Businesspeople holiday resort was wiped clean from the face of New Udanani, giving way for the nature to take it back. The scars on the ground and in the cities remained, however, leaving a visible mark across the land. The only cure for the rather unpleasant memories of these events is probably to move on and focus on rebuilding tribal ties and the physical damage. Some people are hopeful and try to focus their minds on the process. Others, however, believe that with The Sacred Pond of Forces ailing, New Udanani's balance is still off.
  3. A daring rescue - Part I

It was an early summer afternoon in Cape Careless and the yachts and sailboats have been out in force all over the harbor with their crews enjoying sunny weather and snacks out at sea. The day was generally peaceful and a constant (almost boring one could say) Northwestern breeze made it possible for even inexperienced captains to enjoy a successful sailing session in ideal weather conditions. However, at about 4pm, the skies over Cape Careless started to darken a bit. First, a milky overcast has covered the visible horizon, reducing sun to a bright, blurred spot. Later, however, the clouds transformed into a rather unpleasant, lead-colored curtain. Shortly before 6pm the first lightning struck the surface of the water, making it abundantly clear to one and all that it was time to bail and set course for the nearest port... At first, most of the ships started to calmly converge on the mouth of Flapjack's Stormalong Marina and Country Club, creating orderly queues along the waterways... However, as the number of slips available started to shrink, the tempers flared... Sailors who entered the port a bit too late, started to perform dangerous stunts and picked up fights in order to moor their boats in preferred spots. This created an absurd, chaotic spectacle which was promptly accompanied by the sounds of thunderclaps from an impending storm. The important thing though, was that everyone was within the port's limits and safe... as long as they were agile enough to dodge beer bottles being hurled at them by irate seamen. However, there was yet one more vessel cutting through the rising waves. Having learned through the radio that Flapjack's Stormalong Marina was at the brink of riots, Skylark II was sailing towards Courageous Flynn's Docks. The crew have decided to moor with the small marina as it wasn't wise to seek other options in such a bad weather. While poorly sheltered, Courageous Flynn's Docks has at least offered safety, shore leave and a warm tavern nearby. However, when the Slackers aboard Skylark II prepared to drop sails and cover the remaining distance with the engine, their radio suddenly went on and a frantic voice blurted out the following message over an emergency channel... The crew of Skylark II, chilled by the desperate call for help, looked questioningly at the captain - Pierse Toonleigh. He was not just a regular yacht owner but an active-duty second officer aboard STS (Slacker Tribe Ship) "Long Haul" container vessel. He also knew international laws regarding rescue at sea very well. The call for help was genuine and he could not afford to ignore it. The crew of Skylark II jumped to the rigging and prepared the boat for an insanely risky mission. The course to the last known location of the sinking ship was set and Pierse and his crew promptly sailed by Courageous Flynn's Docks. Then, made a tack to continue sailing with the gusty Northwestern wind... The journey was difficult due to the wind coming directly from the location of the distressed vessel. Alyssa was thus forced to beat to windward, using series of medium or long tacks to keep approaching the target and maintain the speed in worsening weather conditions. After about an hour of navigating through rough seas, the wind changed and started blowing from the West, allowing Skylark II to finally stabilize course at close-hauled port tack. At roughly the same time, the crew noticed another sailboat, about 1/3 NM away from them to the North. Pierse, who continued to command his crew while being constantly smacked in the face by thick rain, stopped and reached for his binoculars. He took a good, long look at the unit running the same course as Skylark II. Then, looking relieved, he walked to the radio and started the following exchange. - Cirrus V, you're back with us?! - Yeah! Just like in the old days! Pierse heard a familiar voice. It was Ranald Dooles - a chief mate with whom Pierse had made several voyages to Wilhelmshaven. People felt safe around Dooles - an old sea wolf and experienced crewmember. As it turned out, he has also intercepted the rescue call and was steaming towards the accident with his friend onboard to help the sinking ship. - Cirrus V, let's match speeds so we can get there together. It should be safer this way. - Negative Skylark II! - replied Dooles - it looks like you have a greater SOG [speed over ground] than us. Just go in first, every minute counts! We'll just follow your lights. Don't worry, we'll manage. - Understood, you are right. Try to keep us in your sights and let us know in case you need help! Skylark II - over and out. About 30 minutes later and in what was already an all-out gale, the crew of Skylark II suddenly noticed a bright light darting across the sky. They were close and the sinking ship was shooting a signal flare into the ink-black sky. Skylark II corrected the course and approached the accident area with Cirrus V trailing behind. As it turned out, yet another Slacker ship was already on the scene. A relieved container ship (aptly named STS Rain) has been aligning herself with the sinking vessel and preparing for a rescue operation just as Skylark II approached from another side. After a quick radio exchange, captains of both ships have agreed to the rescue plan. Two crew members from each ship were supposed to board GS Navigator, help the crew out and then use STS Rain's liferaft to transfer the injured aboard the container vessel. The crew of Cirrus V was to provide an overwatch and react to any unexpected turn of events. Once the castaways have been secured, all of the Slacker ships have readied for departure. Due to the ravaging strom, the captain of STS Rain has decided to assist Cirrus V and Skylark II with tow lines, relieving the crews of these vessels from having to fight their way back to Lagmi Shi Island. GS Navigator has been lost to the sea, but all hands have made it out alive. At around half past 10 p.m., STS Rain reached the safety of Cape Careless. The ship has disconnected the tow lines and the brave, but tired, crews of Skylark II and Cirrus V limped into the mouth of Flapjack's Stormalong Marina. The passing storm was still thundering around Cape Careless, but now it was safe to unfurl the sails again. Conversely, STS Rain has thrown the anchor within the roadstead and again used their liferaft to move the injured mariners to the nearby beach where medical services have already been waiting to receive and treat the wounded. Once everyone has been accounted for, STS Rain signed off, and the crew of GS Navigator has been admitted to the nearby hospital. Marking the end of their harrowing adventure. To be continued... Comment replies: @kkffoo - It's indeed somewhat challenging - let's just hope I won't succumb to a multipolar disorder! I consider myself a Slacker though, so I have a pretty determined identity. I'm happy that you appreciate the cities layout. It's a very interesting work and greatly the NAM's merit - it really makes cities more interesting. @TogaMasterJohn - Well, the important thing is you came back but it's true - I noticed you have been missing from the forums for some time. Are you sure you still want to moor with CCFSAM?

  6. Kanin Fjord Entry 10.1: Superstition Paralyzes the Town

August 6, 1998 – The South Port Disaster Part 1 Population: 1,101 The Gulbrandsen Family The Gulbrandsen Family is the wealthiest family in Kanin Fjord. The family can trace is ancestry back more than 500 years, during which time they have reigned as an unofficial monarch over the village. The family resides in one of the homes in Boligene på åsen. Today, Troels Gulbrandsen heads the family along with his three sons: Toke, Roar, and Birger. Troels Gulbrandsen owns both the North and South Port. His family has leased these ports for centuries. He also owns the warehouse complex on Njord’s Seaway, and half the apartment buildings in the village. Additionally, fishing boat captains must pay a percentage of their profit to the family as a term in their lease. While Troels isn’t the town burgomaster (mayor), he still has complete influence over the burgomaster. His two sons Roar and Birger sit on the city council. Troels has control over both the town’s economy and government. Troels’ rule over the village isn’t just limited to local politics and economics. His family is a strict believer in Norse mythology; therefore, he has influence over their beliefs. Troels’ grandfather was one of the leading figures in perpetuating the Sulten Skygge myth in the late 1950s. Owning the Sort Port combined with a superstitious belief, Troels’ family has refused to perform any major maintenance work on the South Port out of fear of releasing the evil spirit on the town. Only aesthetic repair was allowed. This left the port looking neglected and on the verge of collapsing into the sea. Still, despite the villagers’ constant complaints that the port needed to be rebuilt, and economic pressure to develop the port, Troels refused to give in. This was a mistake that would lead to the dramatic downfall of the Gulbrandsen family, and change Kanin Fjord’s future forever. Boligene på åsen Built in the 1700s on the highest elevation of the Kanin Peninsula. Residence of the Gulbrandsen family Disaster Strikes In the early afternoon hours of August 7, 1998, a series of large fissures opened up in Havet. A lady by the name of Baret Vågsen began driving through the South Port when the fissures gave way to a large sink hole, which swallowed Baret’s car. Fortunately, several people working at the port observed the accident, and ran towards her to render aid. The sinkhole was large, covering both lanes of Havet and was at least 7 meters in diameter and 6 meters deep. Roughly a meter of seawater filled the sinkhole floor. Beret’s car was partially submerged, and she was unconscious. Water levels were rising with the tide, limiting the time the rescuers had. Luckily she was rescued, and taken to a hospital in Stokkvågen. She sustained multiple broken bones and a mild concussion but was expected to make a full recovery. The sink hole effectively shut down the South Port. Fishing boats now had to dock at the North Port. It required more than a day for the town’s tow trucks to remove Mrs. Vågsen’s car from the sinkhole. This put an investigation into the cause of the sinkhole on hold until the next day. Throughout the next night, residents reported hearing load crashing noises emanating from the South Port. The sink hole disabled the streetlights at the port, leaving it eerily dark at night, and due to local superstition, no one would dare venture into the port at night to investigate the sounds. The next day revealed the cause of the nightly commotion. The sinkhole expanded across the road and swallowed an additional 12 meters of Havet. Additionally, 15 meters of the quay supporting the port collapsed into the fjord. New cracks were seen in Havet, the quay, and even the foundations of the industrial warehouses. One of the docks also shifted several meters and was now leaning slightly. The damage was extensive. Further exasperating matters was the presence of a large slick in the harbor, and the overwhelming smell of diesel permeating the port. The shifting ground had ruptured one of the underground pipelines connecting the port’s two gas pumps to their fuel storage tanks. Diesel fuel was leaking into the fjord. Once discovered, it didn’t take long for the town to shut off the fuel flow from the tank, but it was too late. The fuel tank was down to 10% capacity. Close to 50,000 liters of diesel had leaked into the fjord. This was now a significant environmental disaster that threatens the financial future of Kanin Fjord. Unlike crude oil, diesel does not clump into tar. Rather, it forms a thin film on the surface of the water and disperses across a large surface area. Diesel fuel spills rarely last more than 96 hours, as the diesel fuel will slowly evaporate; however, it is still toxic to sea life that comes in contact with it. Additionally, currents can mix small quantities of the fuel into the water column which can work its way to the seafloor in shallow waters. It also can contaminate beaches. Diesel does not ignite like gasoline, so there was no treat of fire or explosion; however, the evaporation of the fuel presented a more immediate concern for the town. Such a large volume of diesel evaporating was creating an invisible toxic cloud. Depending on the direction of the winds, this cloud could expose most of the town to toxic fumes. People working at the South Port were already experiencing severe nausea and disorientation from the smell of the vapors. South Port prior to the disaster The port is quite rundown and dilapidated. Kanin Fjord Shuts Down – August 8, 1998 Wind and currents were rapidly spreading the diesel spill throughout Kaninfjord and into Hjortfjorden. All ship traffic on both fjords was immediately halted, including the grounding of the entire fishing fleet. Even the Engavågen ferry had to cease operations. Businesses had to close, while residents were instructed to stay in their homes with all windows and doors closed to avoid the fumes. A superstition had managed to effectively bring all commerce in the town to a dramatic halt. Fear and anger quickly swept through the town. The Conspiracy Once Troels Gulbrandsen became aware of the extent of the disaster, him and two of his sons began contemplating how to minimize the damage. Troels believed that simply abandoning the South Port would be best to prevent the Sulten Skygge from being released. He had no intentions of rebuilding the port regardless of the economic consequences to the town. The problem with the collapse of the port wasn’t just the damage to the port itself, but also the fuel spill, which Kanin Fjord was ill equipped to handle. Troels knew that diesel fuel would eventually evaporate; therefore, he concocted a plan to isolate Kanin Fjord for at least a week, allowing the spill to clean itself up. Fortunately, for his plan, no supply ships were scheduled to dock in that time. He could focus all of his attention to blocking E220 and shutting down the ferry line into Engavågen and Stokkvågen. His sons were dispatched to begin the process of closing E220, while the fuel spill grounded the ferries at the North Port. Once the spill evaporated, Troels’ was going to restart the town’s economy and pretend that nothing happened. Toke Gulbrandsen traveled to Engavågen to shut down E220 five kilometers east of the village, while Birger Gulbrandsen shut down E220 just before the Inngjerdingen Farm. Troels went even further and instructed the town constable to keep residents from leaving town. In an even more extreme attempt to cover up the disaster, Troels had the phone lines shut down so people couldn’t contact relatives or authorities outside of town. His plan also included silencing residents by threatening their jobs and even evicting anyone leasing his apartment buildings. It All Falls Apart For all the scheming and nefarious methods in which the Gulbrandsen family used to attempt to hide the disaster, the reality was that the fuel leak was simply too large to hide. The plan quickly unraveled, and Kanin Fjord was thrust into the global spotlight in an unflattering way. First, the roadblock on E220 in Engavågen failed. Norwegian safety inspectors traveling to Kanin Fjord to perform some final safety checks on the ferry terminals encountered the roadblock. Inspectors have the authority to go through any type of roadblock, and when Toke refused to let them pass using the excuse there was a landslide blocking the road, the inspectors were suspicious called in the authorities. Once Norwegian police arrived, they promptly ended the roadblock and arrested Toke for interfering with the operation of official vehicles and unlawfully blocking a national roadway. The roadblock on E220 near the Inngjerdingen Farm was successful for a few hours longer, but the large volume of trucking traffic being turned back to Stokkvågen was attracting attention in Stokkvågen. Police from Stokkvågen were dispatched to investigate this suspicious road closure. Unlike Toke, Birger did not attempt to stop the police from proceeding, still he was cited for blocking a national roadway. Once authorities reached the town, the cause of the suspicious roadblocks became apparent. The stench of diesel permeated the town and most of the fjord was covered in a slick. Multiple cleanup crews were called in to contain the spill, which was large enough to make international news. News crews from around the world descended on the town while cleanup crews did their best to contain the fuel. Investigation into the cause of the spill exposed the corruption and negligence of the Gulbrandsen Family to the entire world and revealed how religious beliefs led to a massive environmental disaster. It didn’t take long for Norwegian authorities to arrest Troels. He and his two sons were charged with multiple crimes, ranging from safety violations, conspiracy to cover up an environmental disaster, to threatening citizens. Additionally, the government ordered the family to pay for the cost of cleanup along with multiple fines, which essentially bankrupted the Gulbrandsens. The 500-year rule of the Gulbrandsen Family had come to a spectacular end. Not only did the family’s rein end, the power of the town’s religious sect was significantly weakened. Norse Worship Site The hall was built in the mid-1800s, while the stone circle was constructed in the 1960s in an attempt to replicate the grandeur of Stonehenge. 7. 35 years since the nuclear disaster of Chernobyl

Chernobyl Exclusion Zone remains a vast, empty monument to the massive human errors committed by the Soviet authorities 35 years ago, which led to Reactor No. 4 exploding, catching fire and then spewing radioactive material into the atmosphere. A reminder that nuclear energy is not safe.... The Chernobyl accident in 1986 was the result of a flawed reactor design that was operated with inadequately trained personnel. The resulting steam explosion and fires released at least 5% of the radioactive reactor core into the environment, with the deposition of radioactive materials in many parts of Europe. Two Chernobyl plant workers died due to the explosion on the night of the accident, and a further 28 people died within a few weeks as a result of acute radiation syndrome. Some 350,000 people were evacuated as a result of the accident, but resettlement of areas from which people were relocated is ongoing. Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences estimates 985,000 premature deaths as a result of the radioactivity the accident released The accident caused the largest uncontrolled radioactive release into the environment ever recorded for any civilian operation, and large quantities of radioactive substances were released into the air for about 10 days. This caused serious social and economic disruption for large populations in Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine. Two radionuclides, the short-lived iodine-131 and the long-lived caesium-137, were particularly significant for the radiation dose they delivered to members of the public. It is estimated that all of the xenon gas, about half of the iodine and caesium, and at least 5% of the remaining radioactive material in the Chernobyl 4 reactor core (which had 192 tonnes of fuel) was released in the accident. Most of the released material was deposited close by as dust and debris, but the lighter material was carried by wind over Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, and to some extent over Scandinavia and Europe. Chernobyl unit 4 was enclosed in a large concrete shelter which was erected quickly (by October 1986) to allow continuing operation of the other reactors at the plant. However, the structure is neither strong nor durable. The international Shelter Implementation Plan in the 1990s involved raising money for remedial work including removal of the fuel-containing materials. Some major work on the shelter was carried out in 1998 and 1999. About 200 tonnes of highly radioactive material remains deep within it, and this poses an environmental hazard until it is better contained. The New Safe Confinement (NSC) structure was completed in 2017, having been built adjacent and then moved into place on rails. It is an arch 110 metres high, 165 metres long and spanning 260 metres, covering both unit 4 and the hastily-built 1986 structure. The arch frame is a lattice construction of tubular steel members, equipped with internal cranes. The design and construction contract for this was signed in 2007 with the Novarka consortium and preparatory work onsite was completed in 2010. Construction started in April 2012. The first half, weighing 12,800 tonnes, was moved 112 metres to a holding area in front of unit 4 in April 2014. The second half was completed by the end of 2014 and was joined to the first in July 2015. Cladding, cranes, and remote handling equipment were fitted in 2015. The entire 36,000 tonne structure was pushed 327 metres into position over the reactor building in November 2016, over two weeks, and the end walls completed. The NSC is the largest moveable land-based structure ever built.
  8. Episode 27 – Bump

After a bump at the mine, a group of miners find themselves in a bad situation. One small voice speaks up. Episode 27 – Bump
  9. So last night I finally get to that point where I can play a bit of SimCity 4, which I rarely get the chance to do much these days. Everything is hunky dory in my current region and I'm just looking to keep steadily growing the population and filling out my main city. About 30-40m in, I'm de-zoning some 2-tile deep residential in the centre of the the city, to upgrade it to 3-tile deep zoning, when a fire breaks out on the eastern edge of the map. Suddenly my cursor is teleported to the fire, but I'm still "holding" the de-zone tool! Next thing I know, I've lost a large strip of my cities zoning and streets, between where I was working and the fire . First time for everything I suppose, really just sharing my experience, since I guess this was just unlucky coincidence? I have now altered the Play Options to NOT auto goto disasters, which should prevent this happening again.

  12. Locust Disaster Glitch Solved

This is the solution for SC3KU players that are having a problem with this kind of disaster. Some say that saving and reloading the game after all the locusts has been repelled, they're swarming again and causing more chaos at the moment (especially if your cities were planned to have so many trees). Don't panic, when you've already repelled the locusts, just wait about several minutes and the disaster should be over. Note: I found this solution when I was about to search for it when the disaster was occurred, suddenly it's over in the meantime. Therefore, I write this solution to help you guys afterwards. 😄😎
  13. Corvis Province, Haelle

News-person And as of September, the residents of Corvis can finally breathe a sigh of relief, as the local authority lifted the Status of Emergency in the city. Following a massive blaze that engulfed much of a future construction in the city, known as Project Green. The corporation behind the project, Eden Initiative, have yet to release a statement on the nature of the project or even total damages that ensued. The fire office and commissioners administration however estimated damages to the city as a result, to venture upwards into the billions. The Fire Marshal's may possibly have found there to indeed be a substantial loss of life as well. Interesting stuff indeed.. Now to you dan... -- -- -- Welcome to the vestiges of Corvis, Haelle. The newsreel up there is actually a broadcast two decades before Matt ever found himself venturing into this city. Somewhat of a mysterious place, no one wants to talk about the Catastrophe of '87. An absolutely terrifying blaze that engulfed an area to later be known as Nature's Edge; an immense multifaceted, half zoo half community park. Sponsored and pioneered by an organisation at the time known as Eden Initiative. Matt did find out that whatever did cause and happen in fire would be the reason Eden later filed for bankruptcy and was "dissolved", and by order of the Federal Government no less. Peculiar, most peculiar. Regardless, Corvis had quite a few vantage points from which to capture some amazing shots. T-that is a moon, right? Right?!
  14. !! EMERGENCY !!

A dramatic scene is unfolding at Baron cross station, the main station for Roehampton city. The 5:15pm train to the northern suburbs was departing the station when the train derailed and the second carriage exploded. Debris can be seen all over the tracks. Every emergency service is en route to the scene. The royal Hospital is on red alert for major injuries and Fairbanks avenue and Fleet road have been closed to allow rescue vehicle easy access to the hospital. All trains in an out of the city have been halted. No metro trains are stopping at the station for the time being also.
  15. Earthquake - already!?

Someone forgot to turn disasters off - oh well! I have left them on now as this city is about realistic growth and planning so anything could happen! The Earthquake struck suddenly and drove a rift right through the town centre! Houses burst into flames and roads fell apart... An emergency bridge was built to carry the main road over the newly formed canyon! Just so happens, the Earthquake cleared a convenient strip of land to allow me to build a new road to help with the traffic through the town centre (I play with despawning OFF) The bypass is completed and the town is - almost back to its old self! Wonder what will strike next...hmmm... After the new road was built to take traffic away from the centre - the road was downgraded as traffic reduced and trees were planted down the centre...
  16. I've been gone for a really long time, my apologies for those I've left hanging for over a year and a half since the last update. Now we finally find out what happened.... But first! For those new to this CJ, or need a refresher, here's the first entry, to learn the history of this town and how it all started: It is recommended to read through the beginning or previous chapter before coming back. ^^^^ Previously on... Chapter 8: Tornado: The End of an Era - Part 1 "Massive super-cell thunderstorms are coming due to a massive atmospheric instability that occurs ever decade or so... "Police Chief Robert, get everyone to the high school or anywhere safe! This town is in serious trouble!" Massive Hailstorms begin pummel the city early as the super cell moves in^^^ A few rare images taken by a news crew in a news helicopter just as they got drenched in the rain water... This was over the course of 2 minutes. The 3D images were taken from the crew just as they headed back. They may even have images of the tornado from this angle too. Thousands rush into the high school shelter as the skies grow more ominous...be it the gym, or anywhere safe, while others evacuate... An EF3 tornado touches down northeast, moves southwest, tearing through the town... Manufacturing Sector: It spares the downtown, until an even MORE massive F4 tornado touches down and rips through the heart of the town... GO!! LET'S GO! To the high school! NOW! The tornado shreds everything in sight, moving downward, Ben and his family is in the blue car seen above, and the Mayor and both his kids are in the red car, not seen in pic above as they're too far below. Let's go!! We need to get in NOW!! The town's mayor and Ben (his best friend and business partner) has made it into the high school's shelter with their families along with thousands of others after narrowly avoiding a massive EF4 tornado. Unfortunately, the tornado targeted the Maxis-designed school, which wasn't designed for winds this strong. The deafening roar grew louder and louder as we braced, and I could already hear the building beginning to come apart. You could feel it in your chest, almost as if a space shuttle was talking off right outside. I huddle with my wife, son and daughter, thinking this is it. We're going to be wiped right off the map, just like that. Me, my family, and thousands of people. Just moments later however, the roaring began to subside, giving way to the sound of torrential rain and terrified cries of everyone around me. ..... Chapter 8: Tornado: The End of An Era - Part 2 We're still alive. I look around the gym, with the only lights coming from the small windows, as well as frantic chattering from everyone around me. "Everybody stay inside! We don't know if another tornado's coming..." Yelled Chief Officer Robert I turn on the radio and I can barely make out the reporter through the static: "A massive EF4 tornado has been spotted north of *static* storm chasers the last couple hours...Several small towns in this area...cold front...*Static* There were at least 2000 people taking shelter throughout the school, with about 500 crammed into the gym. The city's firefighting team, police and doctors were in here with us too. I walk outside and felt the cold rain sting against my face. I could almost make out the track and field under the flood, and what was left of the apartments in the distance. The trees were completely stripped of their leaves, and branches. Just then I noticed the wind pick up again. I walk back inside. We come out about an hour later and see some people out there: Downtown is completely gone: Nothing left of the theater or forest. The tornado left a serious trail of destruction: (WLHS is to the left) Night falls and the rain finally subsides. The next morning is cloudy, cold and gloomy as a cold front will move in later that day. Families all come out of the school to see if their homes made it. Me and Ben would be driving with a crew that clears the roads to help people get around again. It wasn't long before the true extent of the damage was revealed... The tornado barely missed Woodland High School (WLHS). Was heading southward then just barely touched it as it turned west to obliterate everything (See the pic above this one). It may have come back around but the school was spared, along with 2,112 lives that were in it. The death toll is over 100 so far. No chance for anyone who was caught outside during this monster's onslaught. Downtown as the crew already cleaned up most of the mess. Most roads (except northern road) have been cleared. Some houses were somehow untouched. The Western Residential Sector is in shambles. That USED to be the Manufacturing sector of town. Fun fact: That lake wasn't even there before. Me and Ben drove through the town, helping wherever we could. Hey...remember that beautiful blue mansion seen at the beginning of the previous update? "It's gone. All gone." Said Ben, as we looked around. It was one of the few mansions in the city. It belonged to a humble friend of Ben, Chief Officer Robert, who's helping set up temporary tents with the crisis crew. We cleared a path: Distraught families try to salvage what's left of their Woodland homes. Robert returns with this wife later to see their mansion...much to their dismay of course. "I'm impressed," said Robert, at least the porch survived. "What about your stuff?" Ben inquired as he looked at the wreckage. "Don't worry about it, material things are only so important. That tornado was the most terrifying thing I've ever witnessed in my life. I got to watch it eat this beautiful town, and spit it back out. but... "What?" I inquired... He looked back at me just as the sun comes out for the first time "It spared us. I was outside the school from a distance when the monster went for it, then, right as I watched it get swallowed up, it just turned. Almost like it could sense everyone there." "That's incredible. That had to be a sign without a doubt. Now we rebuild..." I said. Ben looked, paused and said "better make it tornado-proof this time." The sun set was the most beautiful golden sunset in a while, as the sun peaked through the clouds and temperatures went below 60 degrees. Mayor Mathew sent many resources from Woodland River City, including generators, food and water supplies. Turns out his town was spared from the storm, although suffered a lightning strike. Chief Officer Robert wasn't kidding. As it turns out, the town was hit with two tornadoes, one smaller F3 and one F4. (F3 is the yellow, and F4 path is red, which came shortly after the yellow F3 one) The paths with their damage radius... The green arrow in between is Robert's location. He was in an underground shelter just as it hit the police station. He stayed out driving through the town telling everyone to go to their shelters and directing his officers beforehand. He came out of the shelter from the nearby building and took to the fields just in time to see the F4 tornado (red arrow) as it headed for the high school. The final death toll was 228. Over 1242 were injured, 22 life threatening, but survived. The Next Morning was nice and crispy. Dry, cool air from the north made the weather nice and windy, with perfectly clear blue skies. While most of the population has moved to various shelters in the nearby towns, less than a thousand of them stayed in several tent shelters set up through out the town, and the few remaining houses in the city that actually did survive. This is the main tent shelter area, there are three smaller shelters throughout the town, but the majority stayed here: ^^^^Note: On the lower right of the image, is the remains of Ben's mansion. It is right above the path of people walking in, by the four white tents, where a 5th one separated by a yellow one right next to the main road. Now...back to the mayor panel... Only 3000 simoleons in my funds, and population of 736. Whoopee. We're still receiving 1000MWh/month from Woodland River City. Re-adjusted the funding sliders for the schools to cut expenses. Rebuilding Begins... A small temporary water tower is built, and demolition crews clear off the lots and make room to rebuild: After some time, a landfill at the edge of town was built, putting me back in the red, but no problem, we now have 20,000 in the bank! Population is now over 2000. That is the end of this Chapter, thank you for reading this, I hope you all enjoyed it and the 3D images, and we'll see you in 2 more years for the next update! Jk...jk. I will not take as long, promise!
  17. Entry 6: Burn everything!

Replies: Thanks for all the likes guys! Glad that your all enjoying Rokton as much as I am! Entry 6: Burn everything! Oh, how apt a title, even if it wasn't meant to be so literal. Anyway, you see we may as well jump straight into Rokton with the issues being addressed in this entry. The rubbish issue from last entry you say? Well that was the plan. Unfortunately we found ourselves with other things on our hands namely this.... Bit of traffic, not too bad though. This however was another issue...... Apparently some farmer decided to light a bonfire, inside the treeline judging by this outcome. Still we managed to get it under control only for it to happen several times again over the course of the next few years. Also, just to prove that its not just the rural lot that have issues with fire safety, the nice park in Rokton has gone up in flames several times as well. Dear god....... So, this led us to trying to come up with solutions to all three issues at once, which , we somehow, amazingly managed to do. Starting with the original problem this is the new entrance into Rokton. The filter lanes really help ease congestion on the roundabout. Were currently planting trees along it due to complaints about noise levels from the road. Apparently the local bookie gives pretty good odds on when someone will burn down the treeline as well! Then, too kill tow birds with one fire we managed to apparently somehow scrape together another cash to build this huge Waste to Energy plant in the centre of the bay, currently producing more than enough power to power the whole area and burning all the rubbish too boot. (350MW from 4 incinerators and two Oil Power plants if you were wondering. The Oil power plants are pretend incinerators ok!). We also choose (probably rather sensibly) to build a large fire heliport here, to help combat the increasing risk of burning the entire area down. This huge capacity to burn everything has predictably sorted out the rubbish issues in the whole area and has meant that we could reclaim the land previously used by landfills for other purposes. Rokton Forestry is especially pleased they don't have to put up with the smell anymore. We also still have more people moving into the are despite all the issues and several small settlements have sprung up like Glenville here, situated outside Henning Bay next to all the farmland. So, that's all for this eventful entry. Apparently people are enquiring about public transport because their too lazy to drive so we'll have to see about that in the future. For now though I'll leave you with the obligatory overview of our growing region, now proudly supporting the glaringly obvious Waste to Energy plant. Till next time! PS: I got Natural Disasters DLC. Turns out my region really likes to catch on fire despite disasters being turned off. Oh well it makes for some interesting situations.
  18. Christchurch, NZ

  19. Show us how you destroy your city!
  20. Thanks from New Zealand

After 33 years of not having American naval vessels visit New Zealand the USS Sampson was due to enter Auckland Harbour tomorrow morning for the International Naval Review as part of celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the Royal New Zealand Navy, it won't be taking part now instead its bypassing Auckland and is heading straight to Kaikoura to help with the disaster relief. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11748698 EDIT: In another news article the HMAS Darwin was also going to be taking part in the same Naval Review buts its been diverted to help with disaster relief and Canada is sending its frigate the HMCS Vancouver to help. Thank You
  21. Hello, I just dug out SimCity 4 from my basement and haven't played in years. I just wanted to try the NAM mod. It's funny, I was addicted to this game as a kid, and I became addicted to it again. Anyways I'll get to the point now, so the only part of the game that I don't like are the disasters, and the ways you respond emergency personnel to an active disaster firstly, The disasters are a little fun, but I find it hard to rebuild after them. Are there any red cross or FEMA mods out there? And I always find myself only needing to respond fire engines and never the police. Are there any emergency mods?
  22. This is a series of reports that will in due time explain the eventual collapse of civilisation in my simulation of cities skylines,It's quite obvious that it's a dystopia with little touches of mythical references.I was compelled to make this as i am a great fan of historical timelines and the rise and fall of civilisation and the subsequent effects and changes that occurs in civilisation and it's cities and societies. So since Cities Skylines (great game but needs more cyberpunk) possesses a rather interesting feature which was the introduction of flooding and functional but simple water mechanics and dam construction which is a great deal for me for environmental manipulation and the sight of cities submerged underwater (Yes,i am a scenery gorn addict). So all in all i'll post updates of my simulation till the end times with detailed reports when i can. Cheers.
  23. I need disaster unlock guys plz is there any link about it ? if there is plz give me working links because I've just download some mods and their zip file is broken
  24. Volcanoes Anyone?

Does anyone else think it would be epic to have volcanoes in C: SL? I'm sure we all love flooding our cities with huge tsunamis but what if we could burn them with lava! The lava could (possibly?) act as water but just slower, when a building gets in it's path it well set it ablaze! Besides I think a few of us could agree that we would like more disasters. If this were actually created I would spend hours destroying my cities with huge volcanoes. I just though I'd share an idea and see what you awesome people think of it.
  25. The Riker Incident.

From the album SimCity Cyberpunk Edition.

AuriKom City,The primary Hub for the generation of Control Net for the entire sector of New Meridian Rim was invaded by a experimental catergory 4 Gaeger run amok by a singularity update leeching the billions of data of Control Net cutting off the supply to other city hubs but after 3 gruelling weeks of fighting,The City Hub eventually met it's end by the detonation of a Class 1 Gray Goo containment pod.
