  1. Hi everybody. i hope i'm right here, but it seems to be the best place to upload and post my stuff about Copter and Streets. Erm yes, these games are a matter of choice, some love it like me and ++Weeds++ some other totally hate them for whatever reason (many). yes they are clumsy, yes the graphics look even obsolate for 96/97, look, there are obvious reasons why this had to be, we create "scenarios" from SC2K cities, this limits the possibility of graphical cool stuff a lot. in a sort of way it's like for "Pioneer Space Sim" which i co-developed for a time (i was mainly responsible for modelling until i was pushed out). if i show it off to my young friends they also feel the graphics sucks, but a open world and procedural generation limits the possibilities much. similar it's for these two games, because everything is based on the interchangeable city files it limits other things, it's not a specialised racing game (e.g. NFS or Sports Car from the same time period), neither it's a specialised Helicopter simulation. that the game is buggy is to me very good to understand, and in fact run under proper conditions it isn't as buggy as many claim. however i have a lot of fun playing both games, i really like them including their sympathic backdraws and bugs. nah, certainly it's not good for a young dude who is used to play hi-res racing games on his PS4 or PC. But surprisingly we have young fellows who get interested and like those games, for what reason ever, so called retro gamers (i can't call myself a retro gamer, i just never played something else as what i love to play, no matter if it's aged 40 years). In advance to everything else my hints to run those "buggy" games flawless in a recent Windows or OSX release (to show you that they aren't as buggy for real). WINDOWS (any other as Win95 and DX1 to DX6) Use Simply "DXWnd" https://sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/ This utility was intentionally ment to run fullscreen applications windowed even if they won't otherwise. but it can be used with very good results to run old Windows games on recent Windows releases. Some examples: SimCity2000, SimCopter, Streets of SimCity, TWPGA2000..... and and and, almost everything. It allows you two vital things for Streets and Copter, to emulate the proper DX version for the games and to limit the framerate to 30fps that the games will run without any error message (mostly). It offers you another cool feature, you can enhance the display with a very good bilinear filter which makes the game appearing like it would have a higher resolution as 640x480. no it's not simply blurred, it's really a cool filter. another possibility is that you can size the window to any aspect if you like that, now for Copter that's a quite nice feature, strech it just a little bit in horizontal, not to full 16:10 something inbetween 16:10 and 4:3 until the armatures will show exact circles. the limiting of the framerate is not only vital to avoid the error messages, it's vital for the physics of these games. Streets is very choosy about that and any other as 30fps or a little less will lead to wrong physics, the steady bumbing or jumping cars some mention and which kept me from playing it for a long time. it's impossible to play it in this way apart from the steady appearing error message (which can have other reasons for Streets, but later more about this issue). Recently i have no new Clips to show off a running Streets, but you can find some older (2014) on my YT channel. looks familiar? (i found once this image on a site about Streets, but it's my clip, no i don't mind... erm yes i would have liked if he would have referred to me) Very unlike others stated, if you run Streets 3DFX mode it's really not bad for it's age, the proper emulated 3DFX will also help you to run it stable (you won't need DXWnd then). I use "DGVoodoo" to emulate it and it's imho the best 3DFX emulator, it doesn't uses OpenGL and uses hardware rendering thus it offers the best possible performance for such an emulation. http://dege.freeweb.hu/ (for the recent Win7, Win10, DX11 release) unfortunately no clips from 3DFX Streets, because DGVoodoo outlasted already my Win7 x64 back then and not to tell about my old WinXP i have to run recently (because of a broken down machine). recently i even can't make good clips from a lo-res software rendered Streets or Copter. to run Streets in 3DFX mode you need to patch the original release, since this patch is a 16bit installer it has become totally obsolate. Because of that i feel free to link here ++Weeds++ prepatched exe. (ok the game is anyway abandonware now) streets_3dfxpatched.zip OSX To run any win application on a mac there is one good solution and this is "Wine". Wine does really a good job and both Copter and Streets run flawless when you set for them "Win95" as operating system (it runs in fact even better as on windows with the help of DXWnd). the display isn't as cool as with the help of DXWnd, wine does some filtering but it's more bleeding out and blurred as the filtering of DXWnd. a cool thing for both Wine and DXWnd, no stress with the 8bit depth (256 color mode) of the games. another hint for MAC users, to run SC2000 in Wine you have to set the OS to NT 3.15, only this will display the game in halfways good mode with working buttons, but the windows layout will be garbled. however it's playable and runs fine. WinSCURK unfortunately refuses to run proper whatever i tried (you can't select the buildings). if you have a extremely fast Mac you can try if you can get it to run in 3DFX mode, on my old Macbook i can't, wine breaks down if i use DGVoodoo and if i use the by Wine mentioned "3DFX Wrapper" (an OpenGL renderer) the framerate sucks completely even if you choose the lowest possible shading option, "3DFX Wrapper" didn't even runs good in windows, it can be used for a "Aha, such would have looked the game" but you can't use it for real to play a 3DFX accelerated game. 3DFX part 2 you can use for windows releases from 3DFX labs itself, they are quite good hardware renderers but offer no setup, thus you can't tell "use the games internal framerate" (important to avoid the error message) or lower shader options if needed so, neither you can set the proper color mapping for NVIDIA graphic cards (a cool option of DGVoodoo). further in DGVoodoo you can force mipmapping which will help to gain performance, but it looks bloody bad and i didn't even need that on my old XP, but Streets isn't the only 3DFX game so there will be probably other games where this could be helpful. --------- this should help you to get the most out of those two old games, i'm really not lying if i say i rarely see those quite common error messages, i feel it runs even better as on a real win95 with the proper support of either Wine, DXWnd or DGVoodoo. for now i have to close, it's early in the morning, i will post far more tomorrow (my whole repo) or in two weeks, unfortunately i have no web at home and need to visit my old mother to use her macbook to communicate. ------- RACE EDIT ok a last thing i can link here, before i close my eyes (nah not forever - not yet) Streets has a "Racing Scenario Editor" hmmm.... "Racing" but it stores and loads the scenarios under "MOVIES". I found that's a shit and a altered the scenario editor to store them in "RACE". besides this editor only offers a percentage of what would be possible, i never quite understood why EA (or Maxis in this case) handed out only "crippled" editors with disabled functions (in case for the TWPGA course editor i unleashed some features, but why to hell was they blocked anyway? do they thought we are to stupid or what? or did they feared a user could make a better scenario as a dev?). here's the altered "racing scenario editor": raceedit_race.zip to the scenarios more later, another reason why i post my stuff here is that i hope to find someone a little cleverer as me who can tell me how to interprete or disassemble the scenario files. dammit, it would be so cool if i only could add some police cars or stupid messages to the scenarios (eg, "you pass now the famous picayune"). i'm about to find out how it works (i started to make smacker clips for my scenarios already, but well i failed - i will see, it attempts to load my intro anim but it can't display it, so something must be wrong with the format of my file) but i'm far from understanding it well. in fact i did altered the AI cars once (as to see in my clip), but i'm not lying if i say i forgot how i did that and my usual notes i make when i do such hacks have vanished, thus i have to start at 0 again. see, you can have an intro animation and an intro text, none of the race scenarios uses this, but since the file format for all possible scenarios of Streets is the same the same things can be done for any scenario, i.e. position cops, position crooks, place packs, give bonuses, playback file, and so on. if i had full control over it i could make for any topic new scenarios, not only could - i would like to, personally i guess i'm a quite good game designer, at least i'm crazy enough, to crazy for some i found out in the hard way. one last word, one dude started MisCopter it seems to be a OSX rewriting of the engine, i contacted the dev once because it looks like he cancelled the developing, unfortunately he didn't answered to my request (damned i would love to make the models for it).
  2. As a site that is dedicated to different city building games, it would only be natural that among us here are city aficionados and connoisseurs. So I am starting a thread wherein everyone can post images of any cities around the world. It may be a skyline, a rural area, a park, transportation etc as long as you want to share them.   3. Update 3: Experimental Parcel A

    Update 3: I was doing some research into the best types of intersections (to fix the previous update's traffic), when I came across a TEDx Talk by a gentleman named Jeff Speck. What I found interesting, fundamentally, was that simple aspects of road layouts (and zoning) create some countrywide effects. However, only so much can be done in a city simulator. Surely the speed of a vehicle ingame isn't influenced by the width of, number of trees on, or the bike lanes on the road. So, I've opted for a more realistic experiment. To check if small streets influence the level of traffic. To check if mixed zoning is more efficient (The metric being length of commute) than typical American zoning (AKA sprawl). This is the experiment so far (it's not completely zoned yet): Satellite: Zoning: Traffic Routes: I'll run this experiment for about a day or so, see how it goes. If it works well, then I'll use the same principles shown here to build and zone a downtown area.
  4. Welcome All! I created this topic as a place for folks to share their cities and pictures from their cities of fascinating builds within them. Drop us some details about your creations! You just might inspire others to sit a little closer to the fire! I hope you are enjoying this fun game as much as I am! This is Red Devil, named after my Goldwing touring motorcycle that takes me all across this great land of ours. The city is doing well presently, and should remain so for a number of years. I tend to build the same style of city (dense in the center with some Light Residential surrounding it.) I know the Sims love their trains, so I give them some (which they, in short order, abuse and congest to my consternation!) I build no hospitals or schools which keeps the Great Depression in a galaxy far, far away. The subway system is simple, with many connections to neighbors. This, along with Zoos, keep the commercial cap at bay for a long time. I usually stick in a nice Freeway system around the 100 year mark. Kinda fun to bulldoze those nice estates, filled with folks eating caviar. :-) Yes, of course, I use the cheats! It's about the only thing in life I DO cheat at! If I wanted to "work" for something good, I'd be working! :-) I do keep an eye on things as the time goes on. Lots of clean up in the Industrial zones. I have my favorites there and it makes me happy to see them come about. After some game play, and the RCI bars busting at the top, I get choosy what I want to see in my cities. Only a few skyscrapers that don't appeal to me, so, when they come up, I bulldoze them down. I've babbled for long enough.....Here is Red Devil...Enjoy! Red Devil.sc3

  8. Hey everyone, I need some advice. I have been out of the PC desktop world (at home) for some time and I have been getting the bug to start playing games like Cities and SimCity (I have not played in several years). I really am lost when it comes to specs needed. My main purpose for the pc itself would be for games like this and downloading mods. My laptop serves my needs for all other work that I do from home. I don''t have an interest in any other type of gaming other than these city building types. So... if my budget was 1,000 - 1.500 USD what would you recommend on specs with PC etc. and monitor. Thanks

  12. im having a problem with this one region i downloaded (and modified) for SimCity 4. I downloaded this region: ^it's the 48 contiguous states of the USA. I truely love this region because it's very beautiful, However, i wanted more 'space' with it. as in make the whole map bigger. So what i did was, i doubled the size of the config, which would make the entire region twice the size as it is. and followed the readme steps included with it, i did nothing to the gray-scale image though. However, whenever i try to load the region in my SimCity 4 game, it crashes before it can load the region. the game crashes, not my computer. My computer is a MSI gaming laptop, so it should be able to handle the region, i guess, despite it's massive size, but the game crashes when i try to load it. I even turned down all the graphic settings to their lowest settings and it still crashes when i try to load it. I'm just wondering, does anyone here know if there's anyway to get the increased-sized region to work? please help ♥ and if u have any questions, just ask.

    Europa ANNO ! Welcome to my new CJ series. Aim of this series is to depict several european scene´s in differen area´s in changing ages. Accomplish these goals will be difficult, maxis housing and skyscraper need to be blocked. BAT search for the various scene´s will be quit time consuming ! This CJ we start with the 4 Cities region, this consist of the cities of cologne, frankfurt, zurich and budapest; this list maybe extended. Later other region installment may be added to this CJ. Frankfurt am Main as portrayed in the teazer is our first city in the 4 Cities region ! Frankfurt am Main is located in the bundesland of Hessen some miles of the famous river Rhine, wich of you often get the mispronounciation am Rhine wich is wrong. Flashing as it is today, we start in a 1960/70 era, Urban transport will be main focus, Highway´s will mostly be upto NWM level with here and there some RHW at city borders. As mentioned this CJ will be build as you go, so progres in stages. Let´s have a look ! Here we have the Frankfurt HBF or as the bat is known Helsinki Station wich got some similair looks ! Let´s get into town ! First we have the station district with various building´s. As mentioned german city´s wher heavely bombe during WWII so there´s a mix of some old but a lot of post era buildings. Some imagination to be seen ! Old town in surround by a ring of city gardens ! Bismark Square with the famous statue ! Some to be busy scene at the Nuremberg Allee ! Still a lot to do ! Fancy sailing yacht´s to be replaced by Rhein Aken and large long distance passenger ferry´s. Rail infra near completion, ring line around the city is finished, still those catenery ´s and other details to add. Agricultural if a passed objective, there´s to much heavy industry. Next CJ we move on a little bit outer of town with the infra and suburbs ! Hope you enjoyed this CJ and see you back next time !

I hope this makes sense, but say you have a bunch of cities in a huge region connected, do the sims ever travel between them? like if a sim in one city needs a job, and the city next to it has plenty of industrial and commercial zoning, will the sim be able to drive over there to work? I always see cars in the cities going in and out of the city. does it really work that way? and also, why else would sims travel out of the cities?
  16. I am having an issue where random cities from random regions are disappearing from Sim City 4. They are being replaced with a "new City" or a city that has not been created yet. A region that had 16 cities in it now only have 5 or 6. If I open the folder for the problem region, I see a whole bunch of "City - New city(019-003).sc4" etc cities with today's date on the date modified. I am assuming these were my named cities that sometime while I was at work today somehow reverted to their default blank city. Has anybody else ever had this problem? Does anybody know of a fix? The only thing listed in Previous Version in Windows is weeks old so that is not an option.

  21. Hello everyone, this is my first post here! I do not speak native English, I hope you understand. I have a problem with my Cities Skylines game. I am a fan of the game, really well structured and good game engine, and bought (or the free ones just downloaded) all the expansions, including Natural Disasters, which I find the most exciting. However, with no mods I can do everything. When I subscribe to the Network Extensions mod and Traffic++ V2, both updated and NO assets, custom maps, or other mods, the "disasters" tab disappears. Steam doesn't seem finding any integrity problem. Anybody can help, had this problem and found a solution? Thank you in advance for anyone's help. Have a great day!
  22. Since I started playing again I have four cities in my region. It's coming along quite nicely. So, for the first time since I have been playing sim city I want to start a new series of cities in another area of my region. I was wondering, if I do that do the new cities start out basically brand new with no demand and one has to work their way up again or does one get the demand from the other cities even though they aren't connected? Because if not, I'm thinking I would like to have different areas in my region, one farming, one more industrial, the one I'm working on that's more commercial, and then have some sea side cities with beach casinos and ocean ports. Maybe sometime in the future to connect them all in one massive region. But if the demand is already across the board it kind if defeats that purpose.

    Hello, everyone. Welcome to a brand new CJ of mine. This journal is going to take place in the United Democratic Republic of Chernostrovia, located in the northern Black Sea. The name Chernostrovia comes from a portmanteau of the words "cherno" and "ostrov", which mean "black" and "island" in Russian respectively, thus can be translated as Black Island. Chernostrovia was a part of the Soviet Union from 1917 to 1991 as the Chernostrovian SSR. In 1941, German and Romanian forces captured the island within one month during the Axis invasion of the USSR, incorporating it into Romania. In late 1944, the Red Army retook the island and reincorporated it into the Soviet Union. From 1945 to 1991, Chernostrovia was one of the prime tourist destinations of the Soviet Union due to the many long beaches on the island. In 1991, the Chernostrovian SSR broke away from the Soviet Union and became the United Democratic Republic of Chernostrovia. The Supreme Soviet of Chernostrovia passed the 1992 Constitution which held that the Communist Party would remain as the state party and the only party eligible to hold seats in the Supreme Soviet, but that other parties and groupings would be able to exist on an unofficial basis. The Communist Party of Chernostrovia held a new party congress where the party adopted the policy of New Socialism for a New Age, which held that a number of state-owned enterprises were to be made private enterprises and that a market economy was to be introduced, but that the social protections would continue to exist. The new policies resulted in massive privatizations and a very steep rise in wealth inequality, and the country saw a drop in population and life expectancy much like other ex-Soviet countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The legalization of other political groupings resulted in the formation of several new parties, some based on liberalism and nationalism while others based on Marxism which oppose the "New Socialism" policy of the Communist Party. The Supreme Soviet of Chernostrovia is located in the city center of Ravningorod, the capital of Chernostrovia. The Supreme Soviet holds 45 seats, all of which are held by the Communist Party. Most of the leadership of the Communist Party is intellectuals, investors and CEOs, who likewise make up a large portion of the overall party membership. From the 1920s to the 1950s, the membership of the Communist Party was overwhelmingly factory workers, university students and farmers, which was largely the result of the Lenin Enrollment in the 1920s, when the Soviet Communist Party sought to bring more workers into leadership positions and less bureaucrats. In the 1950s and 1960s, this policy was reversed as the Communist Party demoted workers from leadership positions and replaced them with managers and bureaucrats. Now, with the onset of "New Socialism" and the market economy, there is very little worker representation in the party. The newly-formed Liberal Democratic Party has argued that this is a failure of communism as a whole, and that the Communist Party should disband. The Workers' Party on the other hand, which is also newly-formed but is Marxist, has called for a new armed revolution to "reestablish proletarian dictatorship and end the toxic "New Socialism" concoctions of the Khrushchevite bureaucrat-capitalists". The Liberal Democratic Party is the second-largest party in the country, the largest being the Communist Party itself, while the Workers' Party is smaller but is the fastest-growing party in terms of membership. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs used to be the headquarters of the Marxism-Leninism Education Center when the Soviet Union still existed. In the 1990s, the building was made the Foreign Affairs ministry and the Marxism-Leninism Education Center was relocated to elsewhere in Ravningorod. The building has a large tribute to Che Guevara on one of its walls. The Heroes of 1941 Square, dedicated to the soldiers who briefly defended the city from the Wehrmacht during the Siege of Ravningorod in 1941, is where the Chernostrovian People's Army holds parades on special occasions. Dances, rallies, and other gatherings of Communist Party members are also held in the square. The Kozlov Apartments used to be a state-owned housing compound until 2004. Since then, the apartments have been privately-owned and the residents are expected to pay large amounts in rent. The continuous increase in rent has unsurprisingly resulted in many workers moving out and many intellectuals and middle-class families moving in. The Simbirsk Road Apartments, located on Simbirsk Road, have remained state-owned. The rent for residents here, however, has likewise increased, though not to the same degree as the privately-owned apartments. Apartments here have more modern water heaters and backup generators, which is not as often the case in privately-owned apartments. Room sizes are generally smaller in comparison to privately-owned apartments as these buildings were constructed to hold more residents. The rising costs of living in Ravningorod have led to workers crowding in older buildings on the outskirts of the city, which has meant the formation of what are essentially slums. Farmers and peasants in the countryside are likewise relocating to these slums as the kolkhozes (collective farms) have been gradually dismantled by the market economy and the state protections for farmers and their produce have effectively vanished. This has also contributed to the ever-increasing trade deficit and has crushed the Communist Party's empty promises of self-sufficiency and independent development. The Workers' Party has held rallies to protest the situation where many protesters have been injured by tear gas and rubber bullets from the police. Welcome to the Chernostrovian nation, and its uncertain future.
  24. I was wondering if there is a mod that makes it so citizens don't commute to other cities as long as there are jobs on the active city tile? The system for how citizens choose where they work is ridicolous, in my city they get on a freeway, drive to an interchange thats in the middle of the city, do a u-turn and drive to the neighbouring city, even though there are plenty of jobs in the city. Is there something like it or am i dreaming?
