City Planner - Earthquake Resistance and Retro-Fitting
TheMurderousCricket posted a topic in SimCity 3000 Resource Club's SC3000 Ordinances
"The Earthquake Resistance and Retro-Fitting Ordinance requires that money be spent on design, engineering and construction of earthquake-resistant buildings, and also on retro-fitting older buildings constructed before the advent of modern techniques. When this ordinance is enacted, building are better able to withstand tremors and shaking, and will sustain less damage during an earthquake. It can be pricey, though, since the monthly cost of this ordinance is based on the number and types of buildings in the city."- 1 Reply

There were no signs that this morning would be any different from all the other days. People across Udanani were readying themselves for schools and workplaces like they always did. The mysterious tremors that vibrated the earth, have recently subsided and have been forgotten since. Until this fateful day... Just before 7am the ground started to shake violently again with a deafening sound that could only be compared to entire furniture from around the globe crashing to the ground after being thrown out of a flying plane. Udananites started to scream and run around their cities, understandably terrified and fearful of what was about to happen. Many were certain that Udanani was coming to an end and is being obliterated by some kind of a cosmic apocalypse raining down from the skies... or rather, rising up from the ground... And then, after about half an hour of noise and commotion... everything went perfectly silent again. Safe for the cacophony of car alarms, triggered by the quakes... When the Udananites have, more or less, came back to their senses they noticed, to their surprise, that their cities started to float up in the air! As if some tremendous power have ripped them out of place and hung them on invisible ropes in the sky. It wasn't until Ballati Goodlync, a teenage Slacker, discovered a strange, glowing shape on the beach of Cape Careless, that the inhabitants of Udanani got a clue as to what was happening... After Goodlync's discovery she, as well as some passers-by who joined along the way, went to the nearest temple to ask some clerics if they knew the meaning of the symbol that Ballati had discovered. After studying their archives, the clerics have been able to confirm that the symbol in the sand was the so-called "Glyph of Terraforming"... ...which, as the legend has it, was a tool that was used to actually create Udanani! As the time went by, people in other tribes have also been making similar discoveries and research. While most of the citizens have still been agitated and breathing heavily, the hopes were that nothing bad was going to happen with the Glyph of Terraforming appearing all over Udanani. And indeed... The Almighty Sulka, Chief Deity of Udanani and the beginning and end of all cities, having noticed the tribes' efforts at colonizing and developing Udanani, have decided to enlarge this realm, to grant his devotees even more space to live on and prosper in! Once this has been decided, mountains started to crash into one another. Lakes and rivers dried up while other open lands started to disappear underwater. All while the astounded Udananites watched on... After several hours when Sulka decided that New Udanani is fully sculpted, he closely examined each square meter of the newly created lands and waters, with the use of the "City Starter Glyph"... ...upon which, he made sure that all of the terrain is seamless and that mountains of Udanani have gentle, continuous slopes rather than vertical, 600 meter drops. Thus, the "Glyph of Reconciliation" was used... Whenever a city tile created by Sulka was ready for habitation, the deity was reaching into his divine pocket, grabbing the "Glyph of Saving and Quitting" to preserve the changes he made and release the newly formed tile to the people of Udanani... And finally, after all of the tricky, meticulous terraforming, all of the involuntarily airborne cities have been put back into their respective new places, with the use of "Import Glyph"... The final tool in Sulka's Udanani expansion effort, thanks to which all of the extant cities have been preserved intact! Though having brand new surroundings... And by the time the day was done, New Udanani, a land of even bigger opportunities was born... Then, Sulka decided to take a rest after all of the hard work and used the "Nap Glyph" to get a well-deserved shuteye (and perhaps a glass of Jim Beam with some ice). But wait, there is more! Namely - trivia time! Did you know that... ...New Udanani has 51 islands and islets? 22 inland and 29 littoral? ...there are six mountain ranges in New Udanani? ...New Udanani boasts six impact craters which are 708 000 years old!? ...New Udanani has 22 lakes (including two oxbow lakes)? ...the biggest lake is located next to Profit Hill? (yep, they lost access to the river ) ...the highest mountain in New Udanani is Mount Leyndarmalli and measures 1824 meters above sea level? More to come! See you in the next episode! Comment replies: @TogaMasterJohn - As always, thank you for an elaborate and interesting comment! Feedback is always much appreciated! If creation of SBS has been such a big change to the Businesspeople, it's interesting to know what they have to say now! I will definitely elaborate on this topic... @TG24 - Yes, I am also eager to see that! And I already have some interesting ideas in this respect... @kkffoo - @kkffoo, I have to say that I read your comment with great pleasure and I am flattered by your reception of my journal. It is a great feeling to know that there are readers and viewers who dedicate their time to read stories a person makes and pay attention to the storyline and the way it is presented and told. I really appreciate the comment regarding the standard of presentation. It is also good to know that the gameplay reflects individual philosophies I have introduced. I must admit that it is challenging at times to "roleplay" like this, but it is a very interesting exercise and thought experiment to either force oneself to or refrain from doing certain things! As for the before-after shots, the key is to keep at least two different versions of your region. One is your current one. The second, is the "freeze-frame" version that you use in your previous entry... Then, you need this tutorial to get pixel-perfect comparison shots. It takes a little practice to master this technique and some individual workflow is actually recommended, but it is well-worth the results. @mitsos - Thanks! Land route it is (or at least it seems so, given current results!)

Earthquake - already!?
poshbakerloo posted a City Journal entry in Pinewood - No Cheats - Actual Working City
Someone forgot to turn disasters off - oh well! I have left them on now as this city is about realistic growth and planning so anything could happen! The Earthquake struck suddenly and drove a rift right through the town centre! Houses burst into flames and roads fell apart... An emergency bridge was built to carry the main road over the newly formed canyon! Just so happens, the Earthquake cleared a convenient strip of land to allow me to build a new road to help with the traffic through the town centre (I play with despawning OFF) The bypass is completed and the town is - almost back to its old self! Wonder what will strike next...hmmm... After the new road was built to take traffic away from the centre - the road was downgraded as traffic reduced and trees were planted down the centre...- 4 Comments

Approximately at 18:35 UTC -3 a 7.1 Mw earthquake hit central Chile, specifically 72 km offshore Valparaíso and 33 km deep. Initially the ONEMI (i.e. the Chilean FEMA) called for a preventive tsunami evacuation, which was cancelled just minutes after, due to the small magnitude. Neither official sources nor the press report building damage or injured people, but the Valparaíso metro has paused its service preventively. The earthquake came after what's called a 'seismic swarm', a series of minor tremors on the same fault line, on a short time span.

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2014/04/11/new-66-magnitude-quake-shakes-nicaragua/ Very sad to hear. Luckily, I do not believe there have been any deaths except for the one woman who had a heart attack after one of the quakes. However, there have been over 200 injuries due to the two quakes.- 5 Replies

A 7.3 earthquake had recently shook the countries of Japan and Shihaisha. Both countries withstood the quakes and tsunami warnings were sent to the Pacific. Many coastal residents in Shisaido, Akihiko, and a few villages in Japan were evacuated. Waves turned out to only be 1 meter high. Shiroku University is currently empty due to evacuation. Typhoon Tower [台風タワー] and a few classrooms were partly damaged due to the quake. As of now, all train and subway networks have been shut down for inspections. Many downtown buildings in Shiroku and Shisaido have also been evacuated for crack inspections. There has been no reported injuries or deaths. Remember to +1, rate, and comment! Tectonic slide. Tsunami warnings issued as far as Hawaii, then cancelled a few hours later. Apparently there was no up/down component, but two plates just slide across each other. At 7.7 is was widely felt. Wonder if this could be a warning for the big one they are expecting at the Cascadia Fault? I expect the seismologists are wondering the same. On the other hand, it might have been the expected adjustment, in which case it was rather a dud.

Stupidity is its own reward. I feel sorry for the Italians. Not only is their economy in a mess, but now they probably won't get any more weather or other forecasts. That court was clearly out of its mind.

Near Bologna. We have at least one member in this area (Verona) and I hope everyone is OK. It happened at 0400 local time, and there could have been many more casualties than the four reported. Apparently the shock was felt as far away as Venezia on the Adriatic coast.
