SimCity 2000 GoG version - how to change the tile set?
SC4 gamer posted a topic in City-Building Games
Hello, I started playing the older SimCity games and really enjoyed Sc3k, now I wanted to try the even older version (SimCity 2000) because I really like these old school visuals. Then I found out that you can change the tile set for your buildings. Somehow though I can't find a way to do that, online it says in the main menu you have the option but I can find it there. Then I read that you can find the option when in a loaded city but there isn't an option either. Is this not possible in the GoG version of the SimCity 2000? I bought Sc3k there too but there it works to change the graphics of buildings.- 2 Replies

sc2kfix - a bugfix and modding plugin for SimCity 2000 Special Edition
araxestroy posted a topic in SimCity 2000 Resource Club's Topics
Hi everyone! As many of us SC2K fans know, many of the game's animations only work in 256-color mode, which means on modern Windows systems the game generally don't have working power/water/transportation animations. The game's installer also doesn't run on 64-bit Windows, which makes installing the game a pain, and sometimes the Save dialog just crashes the game. I'm here to tell you that these bugs have all been fixed with a small DLL/plugin I wrote that works on both known versions of SimCity 2000 for Windows (the 1995 CD Collection version and the more common 1996 Special Edition version). sc2kfix, as I've called it, is an open source DLL that, when put in the same folder as SimCity.EXE, does a few things: Reproduces the functionality of the original installer if required Fixes palette-based animations not working Fixes all known save crashes Improves compatibility with Wine on Linux I'm also working on potentially fixing a few additional bugs in the game, through some reverse engineering I've been working on. I'd like to make the game's music pause and resume instead of stopping and re-shuffling when the game window loses focus -- this is something that's bugged me for decades! -- and potentially figure out the cause of the military base growth bug. I'm also working on fixing animations in SCURK, but this is proving to be a bit more challenging due to the way SCURK was rewritten for Windows 95. Another potential long-term goal is to figure out how various parts of the simulation engine work and insert code diversions/hooks into them so they can be analyzed in real-time and potentially modified further with additional native C/C++ code or a scripting language like Lua. You can download sc2kfix and check out the source code at https://github.com/sc2kfix/sc2kfix. A quick how-to guide for downloading and installing the plugin including how to "install" a fresh copy of SC2K using it is in the readme file that is shown at the bottom of the main page of the GitHub repository. For programmers who want to hack away at whatever my most recent experiment with it is, the source code is designed to build with Visual Studio 2022, but should build fine with 2015 or later (I don't think I'm using any C++20 or C++23 features yet). If you have any issues with the plugin and need to report a bug with it, feel free to open a GitHub issue and/or post your issue in this thread. I'll set the thread to notify me on replies, which I would presume will send me an email if someone replies to it Also if anyone has any repositories of technical know-how on the internals of the simulation, I'd love to know more. Whatever helps speed up the reverse engineering process would be greatly appreciated. Glad to see there's still a few people out there playing this game. I hope this plugin is of use to you all! edit 2025-04-04: We have a Discord server now; you can join at https://sc2kfix.net/discord.- 203 Replies

Description: Soldier Field, the Wrigley Building, Marina City, and many other well-known (and not so well-known) buildings accompany the first volume. Use the resources below to browse, learn about, and download this tileset. Notes on The Chicago Tileset - In addition to the information below, the text file that comes with each archive further explains how to use the graphics. General info - Volume 2 of the Chicago set adds several famous buildings found in Chicago. For your convenience, buildings from volume 2 are integrated in the same tileset as volume 1, so you don't have to worry about any buildings conflicting. Image format notes - It is recommended that users download the set in tileset format, but for users who prefer to load graphics in image format, GIF and PCX files are offered. DOS users should download the PCX version and Windows and Mac users should download the GIF version. The GIF versions have been given a palette that is compatible with SCURK for Windows, making the background automatically transparent without scrambling the colors. For more on color palettes and SCURK, click here. DOS users - The DOS version varies greatly from all other versions in that the tallest buildings are placed in the 4x4 Arcology and Llama Dome tilebases. Because of this, DOS users will see more landscaping at the base of the building (which sort of adds a more scenic look). Windows users (3.1 and 95) - The Windows version is created specifically for Windows, taking advantage of its added options and flexibility. For one, the towers are placed in commercial 3x3 tilebases, allowing the larger 4x4 tilebases to be used for other large buildings. In addition, each tilebase is given the appropriate name for its building. For example, when you click the query tool on the Sears Tower in the game, it will be called "Sears Tower" and not "Office tower". Macintosh users - Volume 1 of the Macintosh version is available now. Volume 2 is currently only available in DOS and Windows tilesets, although Mac users are encouraged to download the GIF files which can be imported into SCURK (one at a time, unfortunately). A native Mac tileset will hopefully be offered soon. Special thanks go to Joe Sartelle for doing the conversions on volume 1. Comment from uploader (catty-cb) - Have retrieved as many files belonging to this tileset as I've been able to locate, but due to the way the tileset was uploaded to the SC3000 website its not possible to match above notes to the files themselves, I can't guarantee how well any of this is going to work in a SC2000 game.-

Renew 97 features a mix of seven new and old style buildings. This set will add class and diversity to any city. Tower 3000 - This building doesn't actually exist. I just sketched it on paper and thought it looked cool. It's of the modern/futuristic variety, with metallic reflective windows. Bloomington buildings - These are office buildings near the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota. They look best when placed next to each other Faneuil Hall - This New England style building from Boston caught my eye, and is both simple and intricate. Office building - The name of this one isn't known, but it's located in Boston right next to Faneuil Hall above. Office building 2 - Another New England style building in Rhode Island. This one has an interesting shape. Office park - Another building from my sketch pad. This one has an open design and was influenced by the original SimCity 2000 office park. New fall trees - Many of these buildings simply look better when surrounded with fall trees.-

The Mall of America has made its way to SimCity 2000. Spanning 6, yes six 4x4 tilebases, the Mall of America tile is the largest building ever created with SCURK -- the SimCity Urban Renewal Kit. The mall is available in three flavors. Each ZIP file contains a text document with detailed usage instructions and other useful info.- 1 Comment

So I own a copy of Streets of SimCity It has 53 SC2 cities included in the game, I know you can import SC2 cities into "streets", but not quite sure if its possible to load a "street" city into SC2, in case it is am attaching a zip file into this post .... I make no guarantee that these cities will work in SC2 or even look ok if you can upload them Streets of SImCity.7z

Blank maps - These cities provide bare landscapes just waiting to be developed. For cities with high starting funds, you must load them directly into the simulator and not into the terrain editor if you wish to keep the funds. Sectioned grid - A flat cityscape with marked 16x16 sections, perfect for building real cities to scale. Contributed by Glenn Jones. Flatland - A bare, flat city with over $2 billion in the bank. Year is 2050. Treeland - A flat city covered with trees, has over $2 billion in the bank. Trees can help raise land values during the growth process. Year is 2050. City kits - These files contain both cities and SCURK graphics to accompany them. What results is a more personalized city. For example, if you load New York City with its respective tileset, you'll actually see the Statue of Liberty and World Trade Center where they're supposed to be. Special note: the tilesets in the following files are for Windows users only (with the exception of Sanfrancisco). DOS users can still load all the cities. Windows users can easily load the tilesets from within SimCity 2000 using either the startup screen or the file menu. Amarneck - A whole new tileset brings this Vienna-like city to life. A very unique city with great graphics. Contributed by Benjamin S. Kim. Beach - Give your sims a place to sunbathe and build sand castles. With the tileset, you can finally see white sand in SimCity 2000! Contributed by Hisss. Daytona Beach - A nice collection of tall buildings make this city look quite attractive. Not sure if it's a replica of the real daytona beach or not, but it's still pretty cool. Unknown contributor. Dechado - Fictitious democratic city in SE Cuba. Highways, wide boulevards, tourist attractions, and plentiful trees and water make this a neat city to visit. And the tileset adds a personal flavor. Contributed by Charlie Stevens. Duluth - This is as close to visiting Duluth, MN, as you will get outside of being there physically. The tileset adds a truly Duluth flavor. Contributed by John Wolhaupter. New Palanthus - This city, along with it's unique blend of SCURK graphics, provides for a pleasant looking place to live. Contributed by Chris Jones. New York - The Big Apple comes to your computer screen with several real buildings from New York, including the Woolworth building, Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, and the Statue of Liberty. So realistic you can smell the smog. Contributed by mce1123@montereybay.com. San Franciso - The bay city comes to life in SimCity 2000, complete with the Transamerica Pyramid, numerous specialized buildings, and an authentic layout. Contributed by Francisca Akhidenor. St. Armond - The city starts with towering skyscrapers clustered in a central business district, and then sprawls out into subdivisions and office parks. This gives it the realism and variety of an actual metropolis. The tileset changes the trees to fall colors, and has a few new and altered buldings as well. Contributed by Jeff Zavadil. Stadium - This city is actually a huge stadium! Complete with bleachers, foul poles, bases, and flags when used with the tileset. Truly amazing. Contributed by Tim Ericson. -

SC2K ~ A big revolution
anonymous1234 posted a City Journal entry in This is NOT your typical City Journal
Notice 1: This is the third part of this project. If you have just arrived, I recommend you to read "What's this?" and "SimCity/SimCity Classic - Where it all started" first. Welcome again! History and evolution Today we will talk about SimCity 2000, or SC2K for short. After the great success of its predecessor, and also the lack of good simulation games at its time, SC2K arrived in 1993 with the intention of preserving everything that brought its predecessor to glory before, and raise it to a new level. So much that this new game is the one that really marked a before and after in the genre because of the great evolution it meant with respect to the previous one. It is considered to be the model of today's city builders. The predefined squares were replaced by the zoning we know today. There are two density types (low and high density). Many new buildings were also added. Some examples are prisons, libraries or zoos. But well, we will talk about this in more depth later, in the Gameplay section. Now we're going to explain some of the game's history. So, let's get to it. This installment, unlike the previous one, did not feature the work of Will Wright until the end. His place was taken at first by Fred Haslam, a Maxis employee whom Will gave the demanding task of creating the successor to his highly successful game. At the beginning, he decided to continue with the concept of the previous one, a two-dimensional top-down vision. Later Maxis decided that the perspective had to be changed to a dimetric one. Haslam tried to do it himself, but when he didn't succeed Will Wright decided to take part and help him. Reportedly, working together meant that they learned from each other and also had more great ideas to include in the game than if they had worked alone. Some examples are the signs that from this release onwards the player can put up with personalized texts, an idea of Wright, or the newspaper, which was Haslam's idea. Of course, although the two of them led the production, it does not mean that there were no other employees behind them. Let's remember that Maxis is no longer an indie project, as it had been in 1989, now it is a full-fledged company with a good budget. One of the highlights is Jenny Martin, artistic director. She realized that not all cities in the world had the same style, or that even within a city there could be variations, so she decided to take great care in the design of the buildings so that these differences could be felt. We can also mention the music lead, Sue Kasper. She also had a difficult mission ahead of her, due to the enormous limitations of the sound cards at the time. In the end, the game could only include 10 minutes of music in MIDI format. This quality had to be chosen instead of CD quality due to lack of storage space. Remember that this game was initially released on floppy discs! One more person whose contribution deserves mention is Michael Bremer. At that time Maxis had a reputation for making instruction manuals that went above and beyond, because in addition to having very detailed instructions for the games, they also told stories, or gave tips (among other things). For this manual, Bremer had originally thought of writing tips on the latest trends in urban planning, but then he realized that many of the large cities throughout history could not be considered "planned cities." Therefore, instead, he decided to ask inhabitants of different cities in the world the meaning that the word city has for them, and he also included points of view, poems or drawings that these people gave him for that purpose. All these stories were told by him in SimCity 2000: Power, Politics and Planning (I will leave the link below for whoever is interested) Let's start with the gameplay commentary! Gameplay Notice 2: All my screenshots are taken on a DOS version of the game, that is, the 1st release of the game along with Macintosh. Another editions for Windows/consoles can have different graphics/features. The start screen (found it animated on the Internet so I chose that one) Our city's first steps (I'm realizing that I've put the wrong name, sorry.) (even in the label I've put the wrong name. Fortunately, I planned the city in the same way as on the previous occasion.) But well, aside from this. I show you what *El Progreso* (and not Libertad Segunda) is when it advances in time in SC2000 Mayor's manor: The first game in which the concept of the region is mentioned: The brand new underground vision of pipes, which appears for the first time Budget, disasters and graphs: Query tool (also newly introduced in SC2K) Different power plants: Credits: In short, the new additions compared to the first are very noticeable. It is what (for me, maybe you think differently) would make me no longer able to play the first one every day today, but I still can play this one on that daily basis. When you play it you really realize that those who say it is the true model of today's city building games are right. It is a fun and rewarding experience because the graphics were very beautiful for their time and allow you to see the development of the city quite well. One funny thing that happened to me while taking the screenshots is that my power plant exploded and I had to build it again. Probably the biggest problem is the music. Keep in mind that if you play for an hour you will hear it repeated 6 times. Luckily we have Spotify and Deezer nowadays, so if it bores you too much, do like me, remove it and listen to your favorite playlist instead. YouTube videos: (as always, unlike the screenshots, videos are not mine) Macintosh: Windows: https://youtu.be/4E4XW10KKJw?si=FkFJWtEMUosdVSSY Playstation: (this version had a car view feature) Fun facts: Fun fact 1: A city making contest was held in 1994. The winner cities were later included on a expansion pack by Maxis as playable cities. They also included real-life cities (and real disasters that occurred in them) as playable cities in which you had to act so as to achieve established objectives. Fun fact 2: The prices of the newspapers adjusted over the years, (that is, a newspaper from 1950 was cheaper than one from 2001) Fun fact 3: If you cut down a lot of trees you will surely get a pop-up telling you that the citizens are protesting about it. Even if you don't have citizens. Memes: Don't play too much with your city's economy!... ...because if you do, Transportation guy has something to say to you I do regret things too. Hopefully Chad boy will help me to fix my mistakes: (1st and 2nd memes are not mine, third is) As always, comments, corrections, suggestions, etc. are always welcome. And as always too, thank you very much to whoever read from beginning to end. I hope you liked it and that this little journey through a great game was fun. and as promised is debt, the link to the text that I had commented above: https://openlibrary.org/books/OL1124280M/SimCity_2000_Power_Politics_and_Planning Thank you, again!! Hello! First of all, I want to thank @Cyclone Boom for providing me with this interesting idea as part of a conversation we had about SimCity. So, what is this about? Well, basically, to go through the history of the SimCity saga through this diary, taking a city as a model and transferring it to the different installments of the game to appreciate and comment on its evolution. This would be the summary. My goal has always been to play all the SimCity games. I haven't achieved it yet, but I'm going to keep trying, for personal satisfaction and also to be able to expand the content of this diary. I will start with SimCity Classic, which I have had the pleasure to play. The proposal is to combine what would be a short narrative of the story of each game with the commentary on the gameplay, the city and its evolution. I will also try to include some memes or other funny content in each entry, I want it to be interesting and funny at the same time. Of course, any comments, suggestions, corrections or contributions are always welcome and appreciated. The same goes for the debate, which can always be interesting. Our model city: It's going to be called "El Progreso" (The Progress) symbolizing the game's evolution, and the city itself. Thanks for reading!!

LGR dropped this reminder yesterday that one of the greatest games of all time recently hit 30 years old! What are your memories of SimCity 2000? Personally I was never able to stay focused long enough on any city to reach some of the later milestones like military bases, the llama dome, and arcos. But this game was a solid obsession for a year or two of my childhood. It absolutely hits a sweet spot of complexity like Clint says which I've always found later games in the genre more overwhelming that I would like them to be.

SimCity 2000 is a quintessential game in the SimCity series, taking everything from the first game and cranking it up to eleven. While EA hasn't neglected this game the way they did the first game, the version for sale is not the "best version", which I'll go into later. Now, the MS-DOS version is still being sold on digital storefronts, so if you want to play this version of SimCity 2000, to avoid legal trouble, it's best if you buy it from GOG. However, the Windows versions of SimCity 2000 are still classified as "abandonware", meaning that while they are protected under copyright, EA will probably not sue anyone for having copies of the Windows versions on their PCs. NOTE: This installation guide is only for the Windows / DOS versions of the game. There were many versions made for many other platforms, like SNES, Sega Saturn, PS1, Game Boy Advance, and more. Every single one of them requires their own specialized emulators to work on modern PCs. Now, if you’re still here, follow me. MS-DOS As I said before, the DOS version of SimCity 2000 is available on digital storefronts. I recommend going that route, as it's easier to set up, without the risk of legal trouble. EA: Buy SimCity 2000™ – PC – EA GOG: SimCity™ 2000 Special Edition on GOG.com While this version can be made to work on a Mac, many reviewers have rightfully pointed out that the DOS version is inferior to the Windows versions. People have said it felt clunkier to use, being stuck at a lower resolution and taking slower to launch than the Windows versions. Furthermore, this version is lacking in features found in the Windows versions, like the intro videos (Windows 95 exclusive) and an extra zoom level. I'm not saying you shouldn't buy this version. Just know what you're getting. Windows Ideally, the Windows 95 version is the one you should play. However, it is also harder to get working. This version of the game is the definitive version of SimCity 2000, with brand new intro videos that always play when starting up the game. The main problem is that this version of the game has a save bug that causes the game to crash upon pressing the “save” or “save as” buttons (this is also a problem with the Windows 95 version of SimCity Classic). First, download the game here (https://archive.org/details/SimCity_2000_Special_Edition_Maxis_Inc._1996). After extracting the .iso file, download InstallShield 3 Engine (http://toastytech.com/files/Is3Engine.zip). Go into the folder labelled “WIN95” and place the file “setup32.exe” into that folder (which should contain “SETUP.EXE”). Then, launch “setup32.exe” instead of SETUP.EXE. The setup should launch and go on without a hitch. If it doesn’t launch, restart your PC, then try again. To fix the save game bug, we are going to use sc2kfix (https://github.com/sc2kfix/sc2kfix/releases). Download the "winmm.dll" file, then move it to your game's directory (C:\Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 2000 by default). To get the intro and Will TV videos working, go into the "DATA" folder at the root of the CD and copy its contents (NOT the folder itself, the files inside it with the extension ".SMK"). Then, go into your game's directory (C:\Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 2000 by default) and make a new folder titled "Movies". Paste the .SMK files you copied from the DATA folder of the CD into that "Movies" folder. SimCity 2000 can be found on “SimCity.EXE” and the Urban Renewal Kit can be found on “WINSCURK.EXE”. Overall, installing SimCity 2000 requires a bit of work on your part. However, it’s well worth the effort, as what you get is a timeless classic that remains fun 30 years later.
