The best 'reasonably priced' new PC to run SC4 as well as possible
Haljackey posted a topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
Well I made a decision. My current PC- which contains guts from 2010 when I built the thing from scratch, is going to get a replacement. The only thing I remember upgrading was the GPU in 2015 to run Skylines better. It's done a good job running SC4, but now I want to get something new and replace it before something on it dies. It will still be a good backup. ----- I'm hoping on Black Friday I'll take advantage of some promos and build an entirely new PC from scratch. I want to aim this build to run SC4 as best as it possibly could. I'm thinking my budget for a new build will be $1k-1,500 CDN, but I can stomach up to 2k. That's why I say reasonably priced in the title. Not cheap, but also won't have a 3k GPU in it. ----- Having said that, I'd like input from the community. What guts do you recommend to get a brand new PC to run SC4 well on a 2022 build? What CPU should I get? I'm thinking less cores, more GHz per core? What motherboard? What graphics card? What RAM and how many GB? What power supply? Etc... I assume this will run Windows 11 too if that helps. I'd also see if I can get the game to stream/record better. Getting decent FPS in dense cities with a large plugin folder is something my current PC struggles to do. Ideally I want to record/streem seamlessly at 1080p 60FPS. Advice welcome! Thanks in advance! -
Okay, so I am still gonna run SC4 on my pokey laptop sometimes, but when I am stuck at home due to weather, I would prefer to run it on my main rig. Couple questions though, maybe some people can help out... 1) I installed the game itself on my D: drive (as my main C: drive is a slower HDD and not an SSD, plus C: only has 5.20GB free space on it). However, if I understand correctly, all plugins have to be in the C:\Users\[user name]\SimCity 4\Plugins location. Is there a way to change this to go into the D: drive, or if it is easier, would a shortcut from the location on D: into this location work? 2) Any other tips to easily make a "mirror" from one computer to another computer? My plan is to just be able to copy my region I am working on onto an external hard drive and rewrite the region on whatever computer I happen to be using. I really don't want reinstall all plugins if I don't have to. I tried copying my SimCity4 data from my laptop onto my computer. Brown boxes everywhere!

Hi you guys. I'm hoping that you can give me some advice and helpful information. I've been playing SC4 since around 2005. Everytime I've changed PC/laptops I've basically had to start over and lost years worth of city and region building. Any advice, links, or helpful info on the best way to transfer my SC4 for my old laptop to newer one would be very appreciated. I used to have the CD version of course, but with Win10 I bought the digital thru Steam. So its my plugins and cities/regions that I need to transfer so that I can start playing again on my new laptop. My old laptop still has all the SC4 files, folders, etc. And I also saved my Plugins and Regions folders to a flash drive. This site has been so helpful and informative thru the years. Thank you.

New computer, new SimCity 4 install, can I just copy my plugins over?
monkeywater posted a topic in SC4 - Custom Content
I just bought a new computer. I redownloaded sc4 from GOG to install on the new computer. Somehow it worked super easy on windows 10, no loading issues and it works in hardware rendering mode so I can for the first time use HD terrain mods. Is there anything wrong with just copy pasting my plugins folder over from the old computer? I have 6gb of plugins and do not want to redownload one by one. Can I copy over SimCity.dat from the old computer? ( I had industrial revolution mod) -
If a power-supply goes bad, then anything taking power from it can fail (or seem to fail). Therefore, if multiple components fail improbably, and if they're all powered by the same supply, then it's time to suspect the supply (and possibly resurrect "failed" components by attaching them to good clean power).

Can anyone help? I have a tower computer: HP Envy Desktop GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER Model TE01-1177c Generation: 10 Generation Gen Intel® Core RAM: 32GB Graphics Card: 6GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1660 SUPER™ Graphics Operating Sys.: Microsoft® Windows 10 Home (64 bit): the operating sys. has been reduced to Microsoft 7 Sound: 10/100/1000 Ethernet LAN Communications: Realtek Wi-Fi 5 (2x2) + Bluetooth® 5.0 Processor: 10th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-10700F (8-Core) Processor at 2.90GHz Memory: 32GB DDR4-2933 SDRAM Storage Hard Drive: 1TB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive aka HHD Storage Solid State Drive: 512GB PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 Solid State Drive aka SSD Writer: DVD Writer Mostly, I have no idea how all of these specifications will affect SimCity 4 Deluxe. The only program that will be on this computer will be SimCity 4 Deluxe. What I would like to know is, will this computer accommodate sufficient storage and speed to create large projects? If not, what items would need to be changed to create sufficient storage and increase speed. I hope this is not too much to ask but I do not have any other resource. Thank you

Hello, I have a midrange laptop with Ryzen 5 2500U, 8 gigs of RAM (non dual-channel unfortunately), 1 TB of mechanical drive, and (if I remembered correctly) 1809 Windows 10. For mods, I only have NAM, CAM, SC4Fix, and other little ones. With this spec however, the game still stutters, even in 30K population city, although not as laggy as my older laptop. I have seen a YouTuber running SimCity 4 very smoothly. How to run SimCity 4 smoothly? Should I upgrade the mechanical drive? Is the RAM an issue? Is a 10,000 dollars PC with i9-10900K, RTX 2080 Ti, 64 GB of DDR4 (or in near future, DDR5) RAM, and 4 TB of pro-grade (or even enterprise grade) NVMe SSDs worth it? (That's an exaggeration, but you get the idea) Thanks.

Hi all, apologies in advance for another one of those "what PC should I get" threads. I currently have a Lenovo with I7 4790 3.6, 8gb RAM, 1 GB NVIDIA GT 705 graphics card. I currently have trouble with frame rate once my city expands to about 100 000 although I have disabled many mods. I'm looking at buying a new desktop for around £2000 and have no idea what I should be looking for so am seeking the advice of you good people. I would like to play the game with 81 tiles, TMPE and the usual top mods. Any advice on what I should be looking at would be very much appreciated as I am not very computer literate. Thanks in advance.

I have this little HP Compaq 6000 Pro Small Form Factor PC which has a tiny 240 watt non-upgradeable power supply. (Proprietary design.) I plan to add a 2nd Sata hard drive which is still within the power limits. However, I also want to add the new GeForce GT 710 2048MB DDR3 PCI-E 2.0 Low Profile Video Card I bought. That's going to overload the power supply. According to the OuterVision® Power Supply Calculator I could unplug the DVD writer and get back within its limits, but I'd rather not go that route. (And the DVD drive was manufactured May, 2010 so it doesn't likely comply with Sata 3.1 standard which would power it down when not in use.) So, my idea is to buy some of these StarTech 6in 4 Pin Molex to SATA Power Cable Adapters and connect those to a separate ATX power supply for both hard drives and the DVD. (Yes, I know which pins to tie together on the 20 pin ATX main power connector to make it power up.) ( @rsc204 and others) Thoughts?

Nothing too fancy I don't mind what it looks like I'm just looking for a laptop or a desktop computer that will work with this game. Any links to a computer of any type under $500 that will work with this game? Thanks -
Hey guys I'm looking for a good computer microphone that I can use to record my voice in my videos. I'm currently looking at this one: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/dynex-usb-microphone/6084114.p;jsessionid=C12D09678A82D875FB46A20FAC8903F7.bbolsp-app03-200?id=1218719519973&skuId=6084114&st=categoryid$abcat0515041&cp=1&lp=1 But I'm not entirely sure on what to get. Microsoft Windows is a series of graphical interface operating systems developed, marketed, and sold by Microsoft. Microsoft Windows came to dominate the world's personal computer market with over 90% market share, overtaking Mac OS, which had been introduced in 1984. I started this new topic here in General Off-Topic because it is necessary to have a single topic for all the Windows related issues and topics. Which version of Microsoft Windows do you use? I use Microsoft Windows for work, study and leisure. I have used personal computers with Windows XP and Windows 7 installed.

Does adding tons of new Vehicles slow down the game? We probably all know that the more files in the plugins directory, the longer the city initial load time. It would be great to have tons of new vehicles (and reskins) to fill the city streets, but I value my in-play (after city load) CPU/RAM more than the visual extras at this time (until I build a new box). I was thinking of collecting a whole bunch of really great looking vehicles that do not replace the original maxis cars and trucks and trains, and then adding them this week. How much of a risk would that be to computer resources during game play? (Keep in mind - I don't have a POS computer but I built in back in 2010 so its no spring chicken either.) Thanks to anyone who can help answer this little inquiry!

OK, here's the thing: My only computer has finally died on me and I need a new computer. I have on hand the case, power supply, and operating system (Windows 7 Home Premium) that was supposed to be for my new computer build. I also have on hand the parts from my old computer, but they're 10 years outdated; They consist of the motherboard, processor, a 40GB hard drive, and only a 128MB stick of RAM. I also have on hand several half-dead hard drives, but they only have a SATA connector, not an IDE connector. My computer build has been delayed for eight months, and my folks have borrowed so much money, I'm down to only $300. I expect from them the $1000+ they have taken from me, but that would take five weeks. I have a final project to do, but the only operable computer is my brother's computer, and it's already being used by everyone else on the family because every other computer has also broken down. I foresee several options: - I resuscitate my old XP computer and buy an extra stick of RAM for it. - I go ahead and get a cheap processor, motherboard, and RAM for my new computer build and instead use a USB drive as my boot drive (I'd be using something like Linux) and the 40GB drive from my old computer as my hard drive. - I put up with using my brother's computer for the next five weeks and suffer for every day. - I get a netbook and complain about the lag. I'm hoping that someone would have advice on which method to go with. I've been meaning to get my compute build up and running because every computer I have ever had has never been powerful for my needs. I had decided on building my own computer because no computer they ever sold in the store would ever be powerful enough for what I'm doing: Gaming, plugin testing, social networking, entertainment, and programming. It's probably unexpected but I'm desperate for advice.

Welcome to the Linux Corner of Simropolis. I started this topic here in General Off-Topic because is necessary a single topic for all the Linux related issues and topics. This is because all the linux related topics are scattered around this forums and are too short; and this need some more order. So here is the new topic, hope so this will not be forgett so easily as the others. Starting with this news from The Linux Mint Blog, with the header Linux Mint 13 “Maya” RC released! LM13RC is featuring the desktops MATE and Cinnamon, seems to be that the team of LM had discarded Gnome-Shell after all the instability of this desktop reported in the Linux Mint forums. Hope so this new version will come more better and fixed than the actual one, LM12. ----The rest of threads in ST about Linux and related topics---- The objective of this list is to link the another threads about this topic and don't left them isolated, if some is needed from them. If I forget one or there are more in the another forums, just link it in a post and the list will grow.
