  1. I know a number of the people playing SC4 are still using older O/S's, but this may apply to you, even if using a more modern system. You may have heard about a big flaw in Windows systems that's been affecting many corporations and allegedly even the Russian government this weekend. What is the problem? In short, there is a flaw (security risk) that's been inside Windows for a very long time. The NSA/US security agencies knew about this a long time ago, but kept it quiet and used it for their own nefarious purposes. They made some special software tools, known as rootkits, that allowed them to use this vulnerability to access affected systems. A few months back, hackers managed to get hold of these tools and swiftly worked out how they worked. This weekends problems which downed Telefonica in Spain, the NHS in the UK and DB in Germany amongst others, are all related to this vulnerability. Microsoft patched the issue for supported Windows systems, that's 7 and up, back in March. Of course you are only safe, if you have installed said updates. After this weekends calamities though, MS took the unprecedented step of issuing a patch for older, out of support systems. That's as far back as Windows XP, Vista and Server 2003 editions. If that doesn't tell you how serious this flaw is, nothing further I say will help. Anyhow, please, please, please, if you are using an affected system, take the time to download and install the patch from here. If you are using a supported system (Win 7 onwards), you should just run Windows Update and ensure you've all the latest security patches from the Monthly Roll-Ups. Failure to patch your system could lead to infection in the form of a blackmail scam, where your entire hard drive's files are encrypted, so you can no longer access them. The scammers are then demanding between $300-$600 to "unlock" these files for your PC. Of course, being scammers, they can't be trusted. Almost certainly your computer would be compromised in other ways. There is also no real guarantee you'll get your files back. The only solution that's safe is to fully wipe your drive and restore from a backup, assuming you have one. So you could loose all your data if you get caught out.
  2. I got tired of my laptop not being able to handle the game , horrible lag . So I dug my gaming pc out of storage , I couldn't find my video card but that worked out anyway . My pc is Asus f1a75 mb 8gb 1600 ram Amd 3879k 3.0ghz clocked at 3.4 Radeon 6550 integrated (set to 1500mb of dedicated video ram)(pulled from physical ram) so it's running around 6 gb of ram I was running Windows 8 but the game was to slow to play... it was nothing but problems. It was full of CTD''s and was giving me headaches. So I fought this the last three days. I tried everything adding my video chip to the system file list , compatability , software rendering , limiting the game to 1 cpu core . But now !!!! It runs flawlessly and I have yet for it to lag much . Even at 800k sims. The game still runs smooth as silk. And it's maxed out on all visuals !!!!!! I tried windows 7... I tried windows xp ($%&^! edition) Neither helped at all ... Then I installed Vista premium and whamm!!!!!! Runs perfect on all 4 cpus, I clean installed and installed all new drivers. I don't know why but Vista seams to play more games than any other os I've used , also I'm new to the forum !!!!
  3. So I woke up today, hoping to make a parking garage for Skylines. I opened the game at noon or so and played a bit, before doing so. I had closed it after noon, and worked away at my parking garage mod for 3 or 4 hours. I come back to the game to load the model, I make my lot, close the game, do a few chores, and come back to the game within an hour. I load it up, and the game just freezes (Cities Skylines has stopped working, Windows is trying to find a solution to the problem, etc.). Naturally, I think my newly made parking garage is giving the game grief, so I remove all files associated with it. Nothing changes. I use the --noWorkshop and --disableMods lines, that seems to fix things. But of course, I want to play with mods. I fool around with the game a bit, and find it'll run just fine if assets are loaded, but no mods (I use just the --disableMods line at this point). ...And naturally, I yet again assume it must be just a mod causing me grief. I do a binary search of all my files, it goes well, I'm almost done, and I load the game. I have about 80% of my files back where they should be - just 20% left to sort through as I try and find the culprit mod. Currently at 3.5-ish of 4+ GB's of mods and assets. I open the game up to test everything, open a city, play for a few minutes, and all is fine. I close the game, try it again and then the dreaded "Cities Skylines has stopped working" message appears. Yet again, at the Paradox black screen. I do a second binary search of these mods and assets. Not sure why it worked once, and not the second time, but in any case, I continue. I make my way back up to 2.6GB's worth of working mods and assets, I do the same thing, play for a bit, and after a few trials, the game stops working. By the end of the night, I've gotten to 1.5 GB's of mods and assets that work. Yet, binary searches just don't work any more. Even with smaller chunks of mod and asset files put back in place for testing, the game still freezes at the Paradox screen, albeit with an even lesser amount of them now - less than half of the custom content files I typically run. This is EXTREMELY frustrating. If anyone can offer help I would greatly, greatly appreciate it!!! It seems all my efforts are futile, given that so many of my custom content files are apparently broken, and it seems to be a rising number too. I have no idea what's going on. The closest I've come before to experiencing this is when Ngon deleted a bunch of his workshop items and I had to re-install them from another source. Debug if it helps: https://gist.github.com/anonymous/9e63419fd97392a4603c7803be9cdaeb I typically run 800+ mods (4+GB). There are normally a few errors, due to the fact that I run some older mods like American Roads and Road Colour Changer. These never cause a problem, and I've had them for nearly half a year.
  4. SC4: DE Win7 issues

So I wanted to play my SC4 again but now when I plop in the disc I get no auto start. When I click the icon to open the game I get the circle loading above my mouse pointer for about a second and then it disappears and nothing happens. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game and it still does the same thing. I haven't played in maybe 2 years or so. I am not sure as to what is going on as the only thing that has changed is probably some windows updates. Im on the older side of 50+ but have a pretty good idea on how things work. i use a Windows based PC for older games and my main computer is a MacBook Air. I've tried all sorts of ways to instal SC4 Deluxe, but I just can't get it to start.
  6. Hey guys! I'm coming to you with a problem regarding an asset I'm making. For some reason, the generic "city-reflection" that you can see if you look into a window, isn't paralel to my building's level but is instead sunken down as if I'm hovering above it therefore I can't see said reflection at all, unless I'm completely close to the building, looking downwards into the window. Any help is appreciated!
  7. SimMars won't launch

I am having a problem with loading simmars on windows 7 (and yes I uninstalled the update that blocks sc4). Simmars won't start, you can see it in the taskbar for a few seconds then it just closes itself. if it makes a difference i am using the steam version of simcity 4.

  11. I have modeled a building with lots of windows and I was wondering which texture map I use to get reflections. I want the windows to reflect completely without transparency. 12. Running SimCity 4 on Windows 8 The Almost Definitive Guide By Indiana Joe, with innumerable contributions by the esteemed community September 8, 2015 -- Microsoft ends support for some CD programs including SimCity 4. Latest Windows updates will prevent the CD from working. Disclaimer: This guide should be applicable to most PCs with modern hardware running Windows 8. Much of the information is also applicable to Windows Vista & 7. For further help or clarification, please be encouraged to start a new topic! This guide will take you through the proper setup of installing SimCity 4 on a modern PC and addresses some common technical problems. By the end, your game should run smoothly. 13. MS finally fixes OLE

http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/microsoft-patches-significant-vulnerability-in-windows-1.2832338 I searched for the windows corner thread and didn't find it, so here this is. If you look at the MS security report you will note that it requires a special trap on a web-page deliberately written to take advantage of this. However, now that it has been published, I hope all windows users get a fix. This could be hard lines on anyone running XP and using IE.
  14. hey guys, Today I decided that I wanted to play Sim City 4 DE again, after about 6 months without it. However, when I try to install the game via CD 1 it crashes. I can open the setup (by clicking on the cd, letting it load, and also by clicking "Autorun" and "Setup"). It shows me the menu like it should do, and nothing is wrong there. But then, as soon as I click on the "Install" button, the screen turns black, stays a while, and then returns to the desktop. After that, Windows just asks, if the programme was installed correctly. I tried changing the compatibility to Windows XP and Windows XP service pack 2, since that usually works. But nothing like that works. Not even the Vista Compatibility. I've installed SC4 on this pc before without any problems, and even installed it on W8. Does anyone know what to do about this problem?? //EB
  15. Windows Corner

Microsoft Windows is a series of graphical interface operating systems developed, marketed, and sold by Microsoft. Microsoft Windows came to dominate the world's personal computer market with over 90% market share, overtaking Mac OS, which had been introduced in 1984. I started this new topic here in General Off-Topic because it is necessary to have a single topic for all the Windows related issues and topics. Which version of Microsoft Windows do you use? I use Microsoft Windows for work, study and leisure. I have used personal computers with Windows XP and Windows 7 installed.
  16. this is a repost from my own site, the post is linked below in case anyone is curious, anyway let's get on with it. http://truthandlies.forumotion.com/t128-choosing-an-os#278 if you want to share your own opinions go right on ahead, but no flaming, just constructive criticisim and honest opinions, flaming will have the thread closed asap, anyway yeah, choose whatever OS works best for you, these are just the big 3, especially with steam giving linux serious support in the gaming and drivers department, so which one do you like better and why (no flaming), let me know your opinions!
  17. I just got the Windows 8.1 Preview. I was wondering if it will work on Windows 8.1?
  18. Hi, I was just wondering if anyone knew if SimCity will run on Windows 8? I've checked the system requirements over at: http://www.simcity.c..._GB/buy/simcity but no luck. I also tried EA's help forums but no result either. Thanks in advance, hf123
  19. I recently re-installed Simcity 4 Deluxe on my Dual Core Windows 7 (x64) computer. Never have I seen SC4 crash this much on a dual core (even the one I'm using now). I play for a couple minutes and it crashes. I've tried setting Simcity 4 to high priority, setting its affinity to one core (tried both cores each), and even using a program (ImageCFG) to patch the game and make it run on one core. Nothing I've done has solved the problem and I really want to play Simcity 4 again (Cities XL 2012 just doesn't have what SimCity 4 provides me) Is there anything I can do to help solve this aside from lowering my clock or using a virtual machine? Almost everything else runs fine on my overclocked CPU (even on games that use only 1 core) (Specs) Mobo : Asus M5A97-R2.0 CPU : AMD Athlon II x2 270 (Stock : 3.4GHz \\ OC : 4.03GHz) RAM : 8GB Kingston Hyper X Blu @ 1333MHz GPU : Sapphire Radeon HD 6570 1GB
  20. Only audio

when i start simcity 4 deluxe on windows 7 64 bit i only hear the game and have no visual.
  21. Note: This is in reference to Windows 7 64 bit / 1 step instant guaranteed performance and running with absolutely ZERO CRASHES EVER! Over time, I've read so many 'fix's' or attempted 'fix's' for installing and successfully running Simcity 4 on a windows 7 PC, from setting the affinity, or switching to compatibility mode, administrator, or windowed mode. I've tried pretty much all these and I still had problems, and I know of many players whom simply have held on dearly to the XP operating system, which is now so far out dated, considering it was released 12 years ago. The problem people have with installing Simcity 4, rush hour or whichever, is they allow it to auto install in the C:\Program Files (x86) directory, as we know, any changes in this directory require admin authorisation, and for some reason it just does not work well with Simcity 4. I simply installed it in C:\Program Files, note that it is not the (x86) directory. This directory has free reign and does not require admin for changes, anyways the point of all this, is I have now clocked over 120 hours of game play, with over 200 plug-ins, and had absolutely not 1, crash. I have it running on max graphics, max everything, and it runs perfectly. This fix is so simple, so extremely basic, I'm not sure why I have never seen it posted anywhere on the net on any site, perhaps this has already been covered, It is something so basic, I would be surprised if it hadn't already. But the main thing is, IT WORKS! Mechalic * Note : Please post on here, if this has worked for you as well
  22. Version Version 36

The Network Addon Mod (NAM) combines all transportation network-related fixes, additions and new creations that have been released so far. It will add countless new features to the existing network tools, such as new overpasses, highway onramps, intersections, ped-malls, a ground light rail network, roundabouts and turning lanes. This is the Windows version of the Network Addon Mod, featuring an installer. A Mac version is available here. NOTE: The file is available directly on the STEX once more, thanks to the benevolent Dirktator! ModDB also remains available as a registration-free mirror, which can also be accessed here. Installing over previous versions: If you already have a version of the NAM installed, NAM 36 should be installed directly over top of any previous NAM releases, to ensure that your previous installation options are retained. A clean install is not recommended, unless you do not already have a version of the NAM installed. For more information, see here. Tech Support: Since NAM 36 is now the most recent release, technical support for NAM 35 and earlier is no longer available. Special Thanks: The NAM Team would like to extend its sincere thanks to all the members of the community for their continued support over the past 13 1/2 years the mod has existed.
