City-building game(s)

  1. **Edited to include the following to save the reader time: After submitting the post I realized that I should mention this in advance in an effort to save readers time from reading the entire post. This speed reduction/standstill seems to occur on a specific fully occupied large city tile and does not occur on the other medium/small city tiles in the same region. Is it possible that a city file could become corrupted to a point that the corruption/performance hit is only noticeable when this specific city tile is played in conjunction with the NAM plugin?** I do appreciate the work/effort everyone here does and I hate to point towards NAM being the potential cause. I could be wrong and hopefully am wrong as mentioned above this could all be potentially due to a Corrupted City Tile and not NAM at all. ------ Original Post: Hi All, for some reason with NAM Full or NAM Lite plugin installed I have continued to experience very slow performance and sometimes a total standstill during in game play. I do have the game installed and played in steam. The plugin is installed in the normal documents/SimCity 4/plugins folder. I play the game set with all the performance recommendations, graphics list, critical mods to install and AMD Radeon Settings per post: And to be sure that I didn't forget to do something I have even followed the step by step instructions per Ulisse Wolf's most recent video which I really appreciate and I thank him and everyone here at Simtropolis for their efforts in making the game enjoyable: During my various troubleshooting steps I have even ran the game with no plugins installed, sometimes with just maxis buildings plugins installed then with NAM installed or only with NAM installed to troubleshoot. I have even tried adjusting the steam launch options tweaks and still the same. I even have the correct ini texts edited, the plugins fix, the 4gb patch, everything known to us, all types of Radeon settings combinations. But despite my various efforts to correct these issues it does seem to be NAM related. Overtime I have done every type of performance combinations and none of them seem to help. Game works fine and fast without the NAM Lite or NAM Full installed. Once NAM is installed performance drops significantly sporadically throughout the in game months. One thing I will add and not sure if this makes any sense to somebody but for some reason the performance drop/pause becomes very noticeable during the specific months of April, August & November (not sure if this means anything or helps). The game/days will slow down and then completely stops to a complete standstill no matter what the speed is set too (turtle rhino cheetah i believe are the play speeds). Sometimes it takes almost 5 minutes for the dates to start cycling again just to have it slow down and stop all over again a few short months later. Has anyone else experienced anything like this before? Are there any type of NAM settings/adjustments that I can make that may help with this? Again I always use NAM lite and never change the default settings keeping them at lowest recommendations. But it doesn't matter what NAM Settings I put with NAM Lite or NAM Full install it continues to happen. Side note: I am very thankful to the Simtropolis Community and appreciate everything everyone does. I have played this game since it's release date and have even been a simtropolis subscriber since 2009. I have used many versions of NAM in the past but more specifically (recently last 4 years) with NAM version (45?) 46, 47, 48. I do appreciate the work/effort everyone here does and I hate to point towards NAM being the potential cause. I could be wrong and hopefully am wrong as mentioned above this could all be potentially due to a Corrupted City Tile and not NAM at all. Any help is greatly appreciated.
  2. With buildings, CAM and NAM, etc. Just wondering... how to do that.
  3. hi everyone I would like to know what could be the reason why when opening an existing city, be it large or small in a normal region (I have regions with many cells and I understand that it takes a long time to load) these take a long time, they could be some lot or mod that interfere with the operation?, as well as knowing which plugin no longer works, after many updates,
  4. Trying to get back into the game after a while. As I am starting my new city - only a couple 1000 population right now - I notice my streets are almost empty. No cars, no people and my parks are usually quiet as well. The only cars I see are construction vehicles. There are two - oddly they are both diagonal - streets where I do see some cars and people. Rarely I see a person somewhere else. What is happening here? I remember from before my streets were much more lively, even in these early stages. I checked my graphics options and everything IS set to high. Colors = 32 bit. Resolution = 1920x1080. I tried both hard- and software acceleration. Am I missing something or is this normal. Note: I have all streets. No roads yet.
  5. Hi there, anyone else experienced issues with performance when not moving the camera around. On a blank standard map I get around 144 fps (my HZ) but when leaving the camera be the games starts stuttering and tanks down to 14fps until i move/nudge the camera. Then it jumps back up to 144 fps instantly. Tried lower and higher settings on everything. Hardware/software, fullscreen/windowed but nothing seem to make a difference. Also the load in time from overview into the building view is painfully slow.
  6. I now have roughly 6 gb in my plugin folder and scrolling in game and loading takes a while. I don't really care about game load time, but the game slowing down while using is something I really dislike. What is the most important thing to do to increase game speed? -stop using so many MMPs (Plz no) -minimize HD items (plz no) -remove plugins I don't use in the region I'm working on (this option scares me the least) -datpacker? -buy a new computer? Any other suggestions are appreciated!
  7. So I've tried everything under the sun 3rd party launcher software hardware rendering all the different setting the config file edits compatibility mode you name it. some of these have helped a small amount but even then my game still chugs when i am scrolling around a tile it is a nightmare. it seems to me after watching videos that my performance is significantly worse than others. figured id go out with a bang and make a post here to see what you guys think ! SPECS i7-4820K GeForce GTX 1060 3GB 16 Gigs of ram
  8. When I want to look at the Data Views (not necessarily the overhead map feature), exiting the views and turning off all views seems to work relatively fast...EXCEPT for the Zones view. When I try to shut off the Zones view, it takes F O R E V E R for my buildings to return. Is that normal? If not, is there some way to fix it? In the meantime, while I'm waiting, I seriously grab my phone and scroll through Instagram trying to pass time.
  9. About my system: Samsung NP530E5M-X02US laptop, i5-7200U CPU, Nvidia GeForce 920MX 2GB graphics card, upgraded to 16 GB ram. (Although stock hard drive.) Not a high-end system or anything, but it should be more than enough. I have CPU's set to 1 and SC4Fix, so it doesn't crash, but game takes maybe 6 minutes to open. Plugins folder is 3.75 GB and partially datpacked, so it shouldn't be that bad considering how many players have twice that and don't report issues. I've also used that patch that allows 4GB virtual memory. This region is entirely large tiles, and lower-population cities are fine, but the one I'm currently working on is an almost built out large city tile with 700,000 people. I know you won't be getting peak performance with a city that size, but people have been building far bigger ones for years. And the way it's acting is very strange: Menus open quickly, and it usually runs perfectly smoothly, but then it'll randomly freeze for anywhere from 2-6 minutes; it can also take that long to rotate or perform random functions like unpausing - but only sometimes - and maybe 5-7 minutes to save. Meanwhile I'm running Chrome and Spotify just fine and using just half my RAM total. It drives me mental. SC4 Launcher was making it even worse, so I went back to opening it through Steam. Automata-increasing mods made it absolutely unplayable. I still haven't figured out how to change the graphics settings to run it off the graphics card because the process looks very complicated. Would that help? Edit: Solved. See below.
  10. SimCity 4 slow to react

So recently I downloaded the extra cheats plugin and I think I did it wrong and didn't put in correct file or something, finally I got it to work but had 2 extra cheats files in the plugings, anyway I deleted one and its been working (the cheat) but computer was loading to black screen and/or not loading at all(it would automatically crash after the part where it asks yes or no to so n so making changes to your computer(happens errtime I load) and when it did actually load and go to regions the cities were not level in the region (whatever), anyway when I loaded a city it took forever to load and when it loaded the graphics were weird and pieces were missing and/or black and it was slow, anyway I went back and deleted the download and it loaded but is very slow to react and still slow to load game and cities. While in city its slow to react to the buttons I press when using cursor and so forth. my computer in general has been slow to react too, the battery charger I just found out was recalled and did a test and it looks like it needs to be replaced but do u think that could be a reason why it would make computer slow or game slow? I have a sony vaio windows 10 and plenty of ram. Thanks, B
  11. Speed Game Frozen

Hello all friends... the speed game buttons seems not function and ever in the high speed seems to not work... any reason for that... thanks for any help
  12. My game is very slow since I have installed some plugins, I try to clean the plugins folder, but no better... in the original installation the game is very rapid... now is terrible to play, in 3 hours only have passed 20 years...
  13. A few days ago some friend send me some SC4 files to prove it and since I have installed this new files my game turns much more slow... why... please help... I think this is part of Simtropolis crew, I dont know... maybe are some way to fix this problem... thanks for any hekp.
  14. My city responds very slowly to building anything, is there and update or something I should download that will speed things up a bit?
  15. Aside from SC4 deluxe, I also play other games, including Starcraft 2. Recently, due to Blizzard's changing the system requirements for that game with an update, I had to upgrade my video card. Since then, SC4 has the worst lag issues I've ever had. I have also had more CTD issues when dragging networks, or bulldozing. A good friend recommended Cities In Motion 2 to me and I have started playing that. Since transport networks have always been my favorite part of the game, I find myself getting far more enjoyment playing CIM. I am seriously considering dropping SimCity 4. As I continue to keep my machine up to date I have to consider that a game that was created for Windows XP may not be feasible on my machine. Before anyone asks, I do run the game in compatability mode. That being said, I want to let you all know that I appreciate all the great custom content available here and at other sites. I also greatly appreciate this community. I have made a few small (I'm low income) donations in the past. If I do leave SC4 behind, I will always have fond memories of this place.
  16. ST at turtle speed

Well, it looks like we are at turtle speed again... Logged OK. But as soon as I tried to check the notifications, ST went into very very slow speed. Maybe it is the same glitch we saw a few days ago. Opinions? Suggestions?
  17. It takes about 30 secs to log into my game, and most times longer than that to get to a neighbour city. Can't buy anything as it is all sold. This game is not fun anymore. Please can you upgrade your servers.
  18. Hi, So I just downloaded Cities: Skylines with a key I bought on a website and Steam accepted the key and that's all good. The game loads to the homescreen, and I selected a map where I would build, but when I want to load the map it first of all takes like 10 minutes to load it. And when it's finally loaded it is insanely laggy, which makes it unplayable. The mouse moves properly, but when I try to build roads for example it takes a couple of seconds before it is actually built, after I've clicked to build it. So how can I fix this and make it work properly? I don't have a fancy gaming PC, just an Asus EEbox or something (something that "sticks" to the back of my monitor. Also, I've tried to start the game three times so far, and the last 2 times, I've closed every program on my PC. How can I fix this?! :s
  19. Article 1 - Commute experiment

Hello, guys. Yes, I have abandoned my City Journal for almost 2 years from now. I should not had done that, but at least Im back to get this done – even if it won’t be done as I initially planned. I had plans to introduce and show, in detail, 5 cities, however, in the end we are going to have 2-3 cities on detail. I had problems with my notebook (it did broke last year and I had to buy a bad one just to use internet and ms office), and, also, the Portuguese version of this Cj was completely lost by www.simcitybrasil.net (please don’t click). I´ve tried to restore it, but, by now, the Brazilian sim city website is completely gone. Well, Im going to start with the only thing the Brazilian version had and the English don’t have: The Article 1. First, I had to completely re-write it because I had no backup of it. Second, I pretend to release 3 articles about some interesting non-tutorial stuff. By now, I already have the article 2 done. Article 1 – Commute experiment As we known, Maxis use the metric system or international system to measure units of distance, time, and speed. It was posted more than a decade ago, somewhere on ST, that a Sim City square unit is 16x16 meters, the small map is 1x1 km, the medium map is 2x2 km and the big map is 4x4 km. I had done myself – two years ago – some “experiments” about commute and speed. First, with completely empty plugins folder, I´ve started with one house and one small shop. The first thing came into my mind was: “If a place is right near the other, is the commute is zero?”. Here´s the answer: No. As shown in the picture below: For calculating commute, the game counts 1 or 2 squares? I’ve decided to increase the distance between the house and the shop by 8 squares. If the game counts only 1 square in this case, the increase of commute would be 9x. If the game counts 2 squares, then it would be 5x times. An 9x increase means that the new commute would be 9x6=53. If 5 then it would be 6x5=30 minutes. So: This dramatic increase indicates that not only the game counts just 1 square or less in this case, but it also counts some time for the sim to leave his house or the count is less than a square. However, in order to not create unnecessary overcomplicating, lets count as 1 square. Before proceeding, I found something odd about the house and the shop. The game states that the whole city has 5 inhabitants, but the shop employs 7 people! Switching back, what about sims walking speed? Well, if you pay attention, they took about an hour to travel a distance that doesn’t look to be big. Think about it – How long you take to travel 1 km by foot (0.62 mile)? 15 minutes? 20? Well, for sure is not an hour. The average speed of a walking human is 5 km/hour (about 3 miles/hour). The average of a Sim City sim is: (9 squares x 16 meters/square)/(1 hour) (144 meters)/(1 hour) (0.144 km)/(hour) 0.144 km/hour! That’s less than 0.1 mile/hour. Wow, how slow, huh? Are sims turtles and Maxis never told us that? Well, maybe turtles in cars can get really fast. So, I made an increase on the distance to 20 squares, put a decent avenue (that made the distance increase to 22 squares), and here it is what I got: Much faster, huh? About 13 minutes, with 2x the distance… So lets get back to our simple speed calculation: (22 squares x 16 meters/square )/(13 minutes) (352 meters)/(0.217 hour) (1622 meters)/(hour) That’s about 1.6 km/hour, or almost 1 mile/hour. It looks like that sims cars travel about 3 times slower than a regular human being walking! How slow are they? Im really starting to think that a turtle would easily beat a sim on any race. Even using a car the sim would still lose for the turtle. Lol. What about a sim, in a car and on a highway, or in one of many Simtropolis sunken Highways, how much speed? It looks like that our poor, or better, slow sim, decided to buy a Porsche (the red car), so he would go faster. However, how can a poor ($, not $$$) sim can buy a supercar? This is just interesting evidence that SC4 generates the cars on the highway, without considering the wealth of the houses around. Getting back to the speed, here it is the new commute due to the highway: About 7 minutes. Then, the speed of a sim on a highway is: (1622 meters)/(7/13 hour) (1622 meters)/(0.54 hour) (3 km)/ (hour) 3 km/hour, or almost 2 miles/hour, is enough to win the turtle, but still too slow to win a human being walking. I made a similar experiment with subway, and the sim did took 8 minutes to take 20 squares. Something like 2 km/hour. What can we say about this? Well, sims are slow. Very slow. Very very slow. Now comes “my opinion” part. I really don’t think this is a mistake from Maxis. I believe they are very aware of this. They know. The real problem isn´t the fact that sims are slow. It is because the maps are too small. Here are some examples of city sizes: Tokyo = 2,188 km^2 London = 1,572 km^2 Ciudad de Mexico = 1,485 km^2 Johannesburg = 1,644 km^2 Toronto = 630 km^2 SC4 “large” map = 16 km^2 In terms of speed, in the biggest map SC4 can ever generate, it would take about an hour to go from an up-left house to a down-right store walking. It looks to be big, but, actually, it isn´t. At street speed, about 20 km/h (about 12 miles/hour), it would take about 15 minutes. At 100 km/h (about 62 miles/hour), it takes only 3 minutes. If Maxis decided to put sims at realistic speed, then what sense would the Rush Hour expansion do? With such small map there is no need for any fast ways of traveling. The commute on a city with only streets would be 15 minutes at peak (with no heavy traffic). There is no reason for subways or highways. The avenues and buses would solve any heavy traffic problems. No worries about commute times. I believe that, in order to try to mask the problem of a small map, they decided to make sims go slow. So, they would make the gameplay better (sacrificing simulation), and hide the real problem. I really think that very few people ever noticed that sims are really slow, and maybe not even half of Sim City players are aware about how small the “large” map is. This is because, at least in 2003, there was no computer that could take a real size map. I really hopes that in the future, that changes, and really hope for some new City Sim with a 20x20 km map or larger.
  20. Back in October I made a thread about the painfully slow speeds here, and since then things have gotten worse. Not only are downloads VERY slow, with most downloads going at a few KB's per second, but now the whole website is getting very slow, and its been like this for a few months now. Sometimes, be it a 50 KB or 1MB file, my downloads drop into the Bytes per second range, thus some times tiny files take 5 minutes to download. I have a good fast connection with unlimited downloading, all other websites load fast and downloads go fast, but here its getting very slow, sometimes a page wont even load or the website gives me an error page. This slow speed not only effects the SimCity 4 stuff, but the Cities Skylines stuff as well.... This worsening problem is making me want to avoid using this website. What I usually intend to be a 5-10 minute mod searching and downloading spree ends up turning into a 2 day long wait for files as I wait for the mods page to load, then it takes a minute sometimes for the agree and download page to load, and then another minute to load up the download page, and then ANOTHER MINUTE for the download to actually start, which then takes 5 minutes for a 600 KB file... This problem is exacerbated when mods require dependencies Whats going on with Simtropolis? Is the website falling apart? PS : While I wrote this message, it just took me 24 minutes and 53 seconds to download a 637 KB file, an all time record for slowest download. Heres a link to the file I downloaded that took forever EDIT : I don't mean to come off as demanding, mean or rude, but its hard not to get aggravated when a website like Simtropolis, a hub for mods and dependencies, continues to chug along and get slower and slower with time.
  21. Welcome to the first episode of SimCity 5 (2013)! Things start off slow, but we'll pick up speed soon enough. Enjoy the video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CG58634rHuw
  22. Anyone have issues with Cheetah speed slowing down in past few days? SimCity 2013 is slow in 2 of my three cities. Just started a few days ago. Running on Windows 7 and issue only in two towns. thanks,
  23. Does adding tons of new Vehicles slow down the game? We probably all know that the more files in the plugins directory, the longer the city initial load time. It would be great to have tons of new vehicles (and reskins) to fill the city streets, but I value my in-play (after city load) CPU/RAM more than the visual extras at this time (until I build a new box). I was thinking of collecting a whole bunch of really great looking vehicles that do not replace the original maxis cars and trucks and trains, and then adding them this week. How much of a risk would that be to computer resources during game play? (Keep in mind - I don't have a POS computer but I built in back in 2010 so its no spring chicken either.) Thanks to anyone who can help answer this little inquiry!
  24. Hi, I am having a huge problem with starting SC4, and loading cities. It takes app. 20 minutes to load a city of 60,000 residents. I do have about a dozen or so pluggins, and have NAM for traffic. i have compressed the plugins folder and i have turned off other programs while playing SC4. I cant find any programs that can cut down on start times. Any suggestions. Also i am having an issue with the game running slowly while i am in a city. it takes about 45-50 minutes for a full year (on the game) to run by in rhino mode. Im not sure what to do. Please help me, its getting impossible to even play the game . Oh also i am running the game on a Windows XP Premium from 2004.
  25. Hi all. I'm just wondering if any of you had a problem running Sim City 4 when you city reaches at least 700,000 residents. The calender doesn't move forward or moves VERY slow. Have any of you experienced this problem?
