City-building game(s)

  1. Hello Simtropolis! I am a long time follower of this site and have used the communities knowledge to solve almost every tech or gameplay issue I've ever had. This time I am way in over my head. I have created a very large region of 29 large city tiles wide and 51 long. I've found that this is the largest map I can use that avoids the scroll issues and other crashes associated with very large maps. I designed the map myself and rendered it through sc4 mapper. In the region view of SC4, I've been loading each tile once and then saving them. After saving roughly half the cities, the game began to freeze when loading a city. This started every now and then and then became pretty constant. I took out all my plugins, including NAM, and only left my terrain mods. I was able to load and save many more cities but then the problem started creeping up again. I have now loaded and saved about 3/4 of my cities and it now freezes nearly every time I try to load one. I'm thinking I may have hit some kind of memory limitation I am unaware of but don't really know and cant figure out why this is not a constant problem but yet an increasing one. Any help would be very appreciated!
  2. Hello, So I rediscovered SC4 a couple years ago and I've been wondering for a while if it was possible to improve the resolution of the region map. Some cities are fuzzy and some are crisp-ish... but considering the region view is just each city's overhead screenshot stapled together, is it possible to create a mod to improve detail and even zoom in on portions of it as a whole...or is this something locked away in the lost source code forever?
  3. In regional view my neighboring city is pixelated. Only bridges or trains are clear. I have searched the internet for 3 hours. I found 1 person with the same problem, but no solution. Someone just replied with "it happens". I don't know what is wrong or why I can't find more people with the same problem. But in a google search the auto complete text appears and has it listed, but nothing shows up in search. Here is a picture of my problem. I do have the project Orion mod installed but that is the only one and it's supporting mods. I couldn't find anyone with the same problem that had that mod either though. thank you for your help!
  4. Four Years Later

Hello all! For what I believe is around the 3rd time I've done this for this city journal, I shall reintroduce myself. My name is BugeyedDragon (an old name I use nowhere anymore besides this very community), and I used to run a modded city journal based in the fictional country of Boomooderie. This, however, was a very long time ago. I still have Boomooderie and my old ~11-12 gigabyte plugins folder on an external hard drive somewhere. Since then, I retired myself away from building aesthetic-focused cities, as the crashing, hours of scrolling through the landmarks folder, long load times, and other fun issues were beginning to drive me a liiiiittle crazy. I've reverted to a more vanilla philosophy with a far smaller pool of mods (An act blasphemous to most, I do not use the NAM, though I'm considering installing the traffic simulator and a couple of isolated additions like the roundabouts and some other stuff. I merely want to keep my transportation menu as neat and small as possible, and I remember being very very overwhelmed when I was a young lad first installing it.) I did have quite a lot of plans for Boomooderie, however! I had a storyline in which a new president was elected who centralized his power and transformed the otherwise decentralized government into something more totalitarian, while an island 20 miles off declared independence in protest of the new government. I had a whole fictional set of island countries, which I planned to place somewhere in the north pacific. Boomooderie was the regional power, having a complicated history of being colonized by both Australians and Brazilians (I was very young and knew nothing of how... plausible this would've been) in which war took place between the two countries over control of the island, only for the inhabitants to decide their masters were not worth the trouble, and the two sides unified and declared independence. I had so many tiles I had started, but never finished. I am still liable to return to this any day now, but for now, I'm content musing on all of the projects I started and never finished. To this day, I still am taking a similar approach in my present region, Bashkorkistan (named after the region in the Russian Federation). My loose lore was that it was a newly discovered landmass colonized by... almost every country on earth. This is not present in the architecture, style, or anything like that. It's really just an excuse for me to put a city named d'Orleans next to one called al-Hattin. The only criteria I really hold myself to are to ensure each city is profitable before I finish it and to finish the entire region before expanding it. I try to make use of whatever randomly generated tile sizes the game gives me without editing the BMP (though I did add in two large tiles in my newest one because the game gave me like, only one.) After I finish a region, I expand in one of the cardinal directions and make an entirely new one there. I tend to finish up cities very fast, as the game has become something of a comforting pastime while talking with friends Unfortunately, disaster struck me when my hard drive died. I lost almost the entire region plus a couple of other things. Repairing the hard drive is going to cost upwards of 900-3900 dollars. Almost not worth it for a region I had spent like, 5-6 sporadic months on, right? Well, life has been viscerally cruel for the last two years, and I got a job recently, so I am going to recover that god damn region if only to tell life to go fuck itself for the sucker punch it gave me by doing that. One might say it's more about sending a message. To compensate, I've been working on the northern expanse of the region, called "Bandar-Brunesia", a name I based on the Asian nation of Bandar-Brunei. I have been zipping through this one relatively quickly for my standards, I first created it on March 31st of this year, with intermittent breaks. You'll likely be able to notice one of the mods I use already; the SPAM mod (since it's practically necessary anyway). I intend on mostly revisiting some of the older stuff I worked on that I never released, and also comparing my style in cities as old as Bedfordale (which you can see in my first view entries on this CJ) to newer ones I had made in preparation to be featured on this very CJ. That is all I have to post for now, but I will be back hopefully soon. I am unsure of how many people will be interested in this CJ from here on out considering how much... well, better all the others are now. But even then, trying to make the best-looking cities and trying to make your stuff look cooler and more realistic than everything else isn't entirely in the spirit of the game. For me, it's become something of a peaceful escape, and I intend on keeping it that way for the foreseeable future (instead of cursing at my screen every time the game randomly CTDS ) Also, if you remember me from back in 2015-2016; let me know! I don't think I was ever a particularly notable member, but I did have a couple of people who'd always comment on my stuff. I still remember the old simtropolis chatroom, talking to those such as Biprio and confused04 and even Cori before she had become a mod. Fare thee well!
  5. I have an airport that does not show the airport icon in the region view. Anyone know what Exemplar setting controls this? It looks like their are three Exemplars per airport Developer Lot Building
  6. Kanin Fjord Entry 5.1: The Region

Small journal entry revealing the map and a town detail. This should help everyone get an idea of where everything is positioned in the village. Legend Red = Transportation Magenta = Town Yellow = Water Green = Land The Kanin Fjord region depicting areas of significance. Kanin Fjord occupies a small peninsula located at the confluence of Kaninfjorden and Hjortfjorden. The town is actually located on the island of Tufjord, as Hjortfjorden reconnects to the sea approximately 5 kilometers north of the map. Interesting fact about Tufjord Island. Tufjord is only an island approximately 90% of the day. During low tide, a portion of Hjortfjorden drains away connecting Tufjord to mainland Norway. Closeup of Kanin Fjord with areas of significance labeled.
  7. Hi everyone. I was wondering why this is happening and if possible how to correct this issue: As you can see from the image the problem does not occur all the time after saving city tiles and is not region specific but I'm at a loss as to why this happening and how to correct it... Laptop Specs: Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1 CPU: Intel Core i7 2670QM RAM: 4GB DDR3 Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M Has anyone any suggestions/advice please? Many thanks.
  8. Better Region View?

Is there any way to zoom in for more detail on the region view? I know the capability does not exist, but an addon or pluggin? It just seems like the camera viewing the region is too far away, I know it's probably hard coded into the game, but has anybody got anywhere with this? Thanks for any ideas
  9. Hi! I'm trying to update the regional view of my city tiles but they all save with different definition, you can see it by comparing the tiles to the north and southeast. The tile in the bottom right corner is the worst offender. I've tried saving the city in all zoom levels, using the floppy disc icon. My graphic settings are all on high with the exception of cars and shadows, I run hardware rendering and a custom resolution. Any idea how I can harmonize all the tile overviews?
  10. Hi All, hoping one of you technical experts could possibly shed some light on a rather-odd CTD issue I'm having. Background I just downloaded the GOG version of the game (my CD-Rom drive went kaput after giving me 15 great years). The CTD did not occur until I "switched over" to the GOG version (I had no issues when I was running SC4RH from the CD). I didn't do anything else to my computer or plugins folder since making the "switch". Issue: Crash to Desktop (CTD) after pressing "Exit Without Save" to Region View. Test Results: CTD only occurs when exiting to region. If I save (via CTRL-S) prior to exiting, I am able to load my City back up after re-booting the game. It seems to happen when I plop a Building or Lot. E.g. If i open a City and plop a Landmark, Airport Lot, or something else, I will get a CTD after I hit CTRL-S, then try to Exit Without Save back to Region View (it doesn't make it to the Region View). However, if I plop a road piece, Save (CTRL-S) then Exit Without Save to Region View, it'll go back to the Region w/o any issues (no CTD). Thanks: If any of you have run into this issue or could shed some light, it'd be much appreciated! Thanks in advance. Best, TCC
  11. Web Button Improvement Mod

    Version 1.0

    1,560 Downloads

Ever found yourself being led astray into a web of nothingness? Solving a problem which has been prevalent for many years now, this mod contains 4 options to modify the now defunct SimCity.ea.com website button in the Region View screen. Option A (Click Prevented) Prevents the click (and features a hover over dialog). Upon click a harmless sound will play which is only for effect. Option B (Replaced with Exit) Replaces the Web button with the Exit button exactly in the same location. Option C (Simply Removed) Just makes the Web button no longer visible, meaning there's a gap where it was. Option D (Simtropolis Link) The Web button is still available, but now links directly to Simtropolis instead. Added 1st October 2020: Or alternatively, you may wish to use this version: Web Button Improvement Mod_v1.0 - EA Archived Link for Option D.zip As per the suggestion @Admiral Moo made in the comments, this links to the Wayback Machine's archived page for the original SimCity.ea.com site which was the target of the old web link. ---------- There are two versions of each option. One which supports running SC4 in full screen mode, and the other in windowed mode. Installation This mod uses the standard process of installing SC4 content. There are no dependencies. Choose a folder depending on how you wish to play the game (windowed or full screen). Then copy ONE of the .dat file options into your Plugins folder. All versions are compatible with the Raise the UI Mod which is still required for raising the interface once entering a city. If using this, make sure to copy a chosen file into the same folder. The z_ at the beginning will ensure mine loads last, and both can work together properly. Hopefully preventing the web button being clicked (or making it functional) comes in useful. I know I've clicked it unintentionally a few times too! Special Mention Thanks to @Terring for inspiration of the idea from his thread. Also to my good friend @CorinaMarie for helping me with preliminary testing on her multiple computers, and giving feedback and ideas to make this mini project properly possible. I really appreciate it as ever.
  12. I was preparing the ground of a new town, saving and exiting to region, and for once again I accidentally clicked this big button in the upper middle of the region that allows you to visit SimCity.com When SimCity 4 was the new hot game back in 2003, this button opened the official website of the game, from which you could get information and updates, communicate to other mayors, and download landmarks, wallpapers, free tools, a lot of stuff. But if you check this site now, you'll get this. In case you don't know Greeks, it says that it takes too much time to open the site. In other words, the site doesn't work anymore, so this button is just a useless relic of the past. So, if we have a mod that can disable the Save and Exit and Save and Quit button, how about a mod that disables this button as well?
  13. Hello. It happened so that for a long time I've been playing SC4 Deluxe Ed. on Win 8 (x64) and only recently did I upgrade to Win 8.1. Now, the process went smoothly, everything works fine, the game starts, plays, saves and exits except for one thing - the thumbnails of city tiles are not being saved anymore. The cities themselves work fine, it's just the prospect of having the whole region like a dead green bedsheet that annoys me a little. I play using SC4Launcher in windowed mode on DirectX with 1280x768 resolution; tried to change the settings there (resolution, render mode, window mode) - didn't help. Also tried reinstalling the game and updating NVIDIA drivers - no results either. Has anyone ever experienced something like this or got some idea on how to handle it?
  14. Intermezzo

@JP Schriefer - thank you, i wish someone could make some additions to CAL's canals...
  15. I guess we all have seen this behaviour when playing: you make a very cool waterscape, with different depths, maybe MMPs and all of that, but when saving to the region, all those details vanish and the water is replaced by a dull colour filler with an average tint of your water mod. Is there some way to make the game save the water colour as it is on the open maps?
  16. Public Transport: Part 2

Hello again. This will be a quick entry, that will finally fit in the description of the CJ: Me asking for help and doing stuff. This is how Bellingham looks right now: A Sprawling metropolis with almost 3 mi people in it. Every metropolis have its problems with transportation Bellingham's is called Bandeirantes Avenue. Crossing with Avenida dos Campeões, another big arterial road of the city In few years, the avenue became one of the biggest cores of the city, with 64000 vehicles per day in it's five lanes per direction. All this complex it's right now this avenue is being serviced only by one subway station, Estação Bandeirantes of Line 1, one of the most used stations of the metro system. Graphic representation of the usage of the stations and the services Image of the station itself This and the need of servicing more specifically like - Traditional neighborhoods Neighborhood Jardim 8 de Março and the Avenida 8 de Março Expressway Neighborhood Bom-Retiro - Another Crowded Metro station Nearby of the Finas Artes Station - Parks and Landmarks Parque Iguaçu in the left bottom Sambadrome of Bellingham Led the city to design a new subway line, linking those points: Map of the designed line: Line With stations: Transfer stations are in red Existing networks What do you think? Good Plan? Or waste of time and money? Another thing that you want to propose?
  17. In the center-top of the region view screen in Simcity 4 is a button indicating the internet linked to simcity.ea.com/. The link still goes to the ea server, but ea has long since abandoned the page and directs the user to the Origin site. All you get when you click the link is a 'Forbidden' notice --not very user-freindly. I went through the system registry and couldn't find the link or any code indicating it there or elsewhere so I figure it must be coded somewhere in the exe or dat files, but I can't see why it would be locked as internet links are often something that could change. It seems to me there are no legal licensing issues with modding the game such to replace the dead link with a functional link to wherever the user may want it to go. Does anybody know if there is an easy way to change the link? Did I miss something in the registry or some data file? Or is there any known issue changing the link with the EULA that I missed?
  18. Region View plus Little River Reservoir

Enjoy the region view! :-) Some early shots of the Little River Reservoir. Thanks for the visit - Dick
  19. Hi all, new to Simtropolis here. The game has been running fine except this graphical glitch with black boxes on the region map as shown here: I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium x64. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I’ve done some searching around and found these two posts both experiencing the same problem as I have been: https://community.simtropolis.com/forums/topic/65403-strange-region-view-edge-glitch/ The op “fixed” the problem by switching from “hardware” to “software” in game settings, and then reloading and saving each tile that had the black boxes glitch. This also “fixed” it for me but I wanted to use an HD water mod in my game and the “software” setting will cause CTD. Also the “software” setting runs a lot slower than “hardware” on my computer. https://community.simtropolis.com/forums/topic/62002-black-box-bug/ The op here fixed the problem by switching resolution from 1600x1200 to 800x600. I tried switching my resolution from 1366x768 to 800x600 and to 640x480, and ran the game and saved over the city tile with black boxes, but the black boxes remained. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Then I noticed something very strange. Keeping the game set in “hardware” mode, I started messing around with the in-game graphics setting options, and for some unknown reason, whenever I checked the box that turns on waves, then saved and exited back to the region map, the black boxes disappeared. Enabling waves: Black boxes gone: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And then I thought “well okay, I just keep the waves turned on and the glitch should be gone.” But whenever I start a tile that has no water or has water body too small to have any waves, the black boxes glitch would appear again regardless whether I checked the waves box or not: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So this whole investigation got me thinking if there is something wrong with the appearance and disappearance of wave graphics in the game that causes this black box glitch in the region map. I’m not computer savvy enough to look deeper into this, so anyone willing to help look into it and maybe find a way to bypass or fix the glitch will be very much appreciated. Thanks!
  20. Searching for a mod that shows subway lines in region view for more than a weak, still I can't find. (By now I've only used elevated rail and trains on the ground to show up the transportation system in my region...) Isn't it wonder why that useful mod, at least I think so, is hard to find? :S
  21. Hello all, I was wondering if anyone has ever encountered something like this: I had just grown a few low density res/com buildings in the area pictured in the right of the tile and saved and exited to region mode when i noticed a thin red line had appeared across the tile. The line extends onto the neighbouring tile and appears to be centered in (possibly projected from?) the my buildings had just grown in. It is only visible in region view so it is not a huge deal, however still fairly annoying. This screenshot was taken while loading the city. You can see the red line projecting out into where a neighbouring tile would be. Upon investigating I found 5 - 8 buildings (homes & shops) seemingly at the exact middle of the line had been glitched so their buildings were not rendered and only the lot texture was present (queries & bulldoze did not work, dezone removed these). I removed these strange lots and could not find any other anomalies. As well I noticed this line is directly along where a neighbouring rail connection was coming in (which I had deleted just prior to this glitch appearing). Also I have tried software/hardware modes as well as different resolutions & 16/32 bit color (as I have recently reinstalled and been messing around with settings anyways and figured maybe it was due to a graphics setting). So basically I am just wondering if anyone has ever experienced this or anything similar?? Thanks for any help!!! Cheers, Tom Also just to clarify the land under the red line in the picture is blank, meaning there is no rail running there right now so what you are seeing on the undeveloped land is also the red line.
  22. Just FYI: If you updated your GeForce driver recently and suddenly experience a catastrophic glitch in the region view after saving a city, try re-installing the previous driver version. All recent NVIDIA drivers may be affected. I experienced this on my old rig after installing driver version 340.52 for the GeForce GTS 250 on Windows 7 64 bit. Suspected the driver but didn't verify it. Bought a new machine in January, equipped with a GeForce GTX 970, driver version 347.09. Installed SimCity and played for a while. No problem. Updated to version 347.25. Same problem again. Re-installed 347.09. Problem gone. I'm using SimCity 4 Deluxe, patched to 1.1.638; no mods or tweaks or anything. Use hardware rendering, 32 bit color. Screen resolution doesn't seem to matter. I submitted a bug report to NVIDIA. If we're lucky, they'll fix it. If not - goodbye, SimCity 4. I won't stick to an old driver version forever. Cheers, Wolfgang
  23. Hello. I have been trying to export a region view image of my entire region (2048x8192 small tiles). The Region Census program apparently can't handle large regions, so I thought I'd reinstall SimCity 4 Startup Manager, as I know it can export the region image as well. However, now that I've installed it, SC4 Startup Manager is telling me that my regions' cities are all "inapplicable", and it won't show anything but blank ground tiles in its preview of the region. I don't understand what this means, as I've already tried loading them in the game, and the region shows up just fine, in addition to the cities having no problem loading. It's only SC4 Startup Manager that has the problem. I've already tried deleting its .ini file to let it re-make it. Does anyone know if there's anything I can do here to fix this? I'd previously edited the config.bmp of the region using Startup Manager in order to expand the region to the north and east; I think maybe this has something to do with it. When I did this, all my neighbor deals were canceled, but that's been fixed since then. I would also like to possibly use Startup Manager to more easily edit the config.bmp to subdivide city tiles in the new areas in the future, but I guess if I can't use it, I'll do that manually. Also, failing this problem getting resolved, does anyone know of another tool besides Region Census that can view/export an image of the entire region outside of the game?
  24. Custom Region View Backgrounds

    Version 1.0

    1,277 Downloads

Are you fed up with the boring blue grid? This package contains a selection of solid colours to replace the game’s default region view background. There are 10 variations to choose from, all compatible in both Software and Hardware rendering. In addition, I’ve created matching city backgrounds. These complement the region backgrounds, and replace the 5 PNG files in the game’s “Program Files” plugins folder. Download the zip file named 2-city_backgrounds.zip if you wish to use these, and follow the below instructions. INSTALLATION Region Backgrounds (1-region_backgrounds.zip): Select ONE of the following files and copy / move to your "Documents\SimCity 4\Plugins" folder: region_bg_1-black.dat region_bg_2-grey.dat region_bg_3-blue.dat region_bg_4-aqua.dat region_bg_5-green.dat region_bg_6-lime.dat region_bg_7-brown.dat region_bg_8-purple.dat region_bg_9-red.dat region_bg_10-white.dat City Backgrounds (2-city_backgrounds.zip): For these, installation is different. The package contains 10 folders corresponding to each colour. Each subfolder contains 5 PNG files: Background3D0.png Background3D1.png Background3D2.png Background3D3.png Background3D4.png 1. Go to “C:\Program Files (x86)\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe\Plugins” and move the 5 default PNG files to a backup location. 2. Open a colour variation folder and copy the 5 custom PNG files to “C:\Program Files (x86)\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe\Plugins” Note: Adding them to the usual "Documents" plugins will not work! 25. Hi, I'm having a bit of a problem here. I hadn't played in a few months, and when I decided to open up a city I had been working on, I noticed that I now have graphics/detail issues in region view, as well as highest zoom out. Many small details/props are now missing, but only in the most recent cities I was working on (all within the same region). My computer settings have not changed, and all of my graphics are set on high (I'm using a resolution of 1280x1024). I should also mention that I am running on a Samsung laptop with an unfortunately awful Intel HD family graphics card, and I am and have been using Windows 7. Again, I've never encountered this problem before, and I find it very odd that it only affects recently worked on cities. Could this be a compatibility issue with certain plug-in or mod sets (I do use specific sets for each city), or perhaps something worse? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Cheers!
