  1. Simtropolis Returns!

Thank you so much for all of your hard work!!!!!
  2. Very Large Region - city tiles have stopped opening

I can't speak to small and medium tiles because I only use large, but large tiles from mapper start with the clock running so this is incredibly helpful!

Very good point! Thank you so much, you just saved me a bunch of time down the road. With this in mind, I thought that it would be better to try to load tiles with a full plugin folder (10.8 gigs) as a better test to determine how big a region is too big to be playable. Sure enough filling the plugin folder caused the game to CTD using that region but worked with a smaller region. So with the region being unloadable with a full plugin folder and 1,479 cities. I started removing cities from the region folder until I removed enough to make the region loadable. Once I got down to 710 saved cities I was able to fully open individual cities. 710 is still quite a bit of tiles but this is much less than I had originally thought when designing the region in mapper. I have not tried this, this would be wonderful because all those things are perfect to automate and cut down on clicks for each city. Thank you so much!

Thank you so much, this is very informative. I also think there is some connection to what is in the plugin folder as well. I've been loading these tiles with a very light plugin folder and when I took out everything that wasn't the tree controller and terrain mod, mainly the NAM, I was able to load and save 30ish more cities than I could before taking them out. This would make sense if the plugins that it has to load with each city contributes to this limit. I'm now testing a region that is 29X39 making it 1,131 tiles. just over 3/4 the size of the old region. Since I started having issues around 3/4 of the way last time. I expect to run in to issues with this region near the end. As far as developing the region, my plan was not to entirely develop the whole map in painstaking detail. Some tiles will be all water, some will require only typing in flora mania and then saving. Some will take a lot of time. The idea I'm try for is to show the transition from urban to rural so I wanted as large a canvas as possible to try to work with true regionalism. I fully expect this to take multiple years, I'm working with a new computer and it has already taken months to get to this point. I also use many ploppable buildings and demand modifications to move the development of each tile along quickly. Trial and error is frustrating, but it seems that now with modern hardware it is difficult to find where the game's hard limits actually are.

Yes I am using the 4gb patch because the game is unplayable for me without it. I'd love to figure out what the limits really are for large regions because trial and error is very time consuming. The region folder size is just right now just over 2.5 gigs. Also noticed that if I took cities that were already saved in game out of the region folder, I was able to open up the remaining cities.
  6. Hello Simtropolis! I am a long time follower of this site and have used the communities knowledge to solve almost every tech or gameplay issue I've ever had. This time I am way in over my head. I have created a very large region of 29 large city tiles wide and 51 long. I've found that this is the largest map I can use that avoids the scroll issues and other crashes associated with very large maps. I designed the map myself and rendered it through sc4 mapper. In the region view of SC4, I've been loading each tile once and then saving them. After saving roughly half the cities, the game began to freeze when loading a city. This started every now and then and then became pretty constant. I took out all my plugins, including NAM, and only left my terrain mods. I was able to load and save many more cities but then the problem started creeping up again. I have now loaded and saved about 3/4 of my cities and it now freezes nearly every time I try to load one. I'm thinking I may have hit some kind of memory limitation I am unaware of but don't really know and cant figure out why this is not a constant problem but yet an increasing one. Any help would be very appreciated!
