discussion SC4 STEX New Categories Proposal

If the categorization means a fix for the STEX search function, then I am all for it. (Truth be told, I'm all for it either way.)- 60 Replies

Twinkle, twinkle, little BAT...
madhatter106 replied to madhatter106's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
@IDS2 - thanks. Yeah, this last one has a lot of "cake decoration" on it. It is a bit delicious, isn't it? The original from which I 'm deriving the design is like a confection. Never in a million years would I have thought I could load that much detail into nearly every facade pixel, but I've managed. Here's some texturing work done; not sure how I feel about this yet...getting the balance right for the saturation and the lights and the darks and the warms and the cools and the brick and the aged/weathered metal, it has been a bit of a challenge. A lot of tug of war, back and forth, between gmax and Photoshop. Save, resave, oversave, save again... And here's some texturing done for the one prior in the thread - the only thing left is doing the window texture/treatment. I gave myself a treat for finishing it by adding a water tower...I will be the first to admit I am a sucker for water towers in BATs...- 1,133 Replies

Twinkle, twinkle, little BAT...
madhatter106 replied to madhatter106's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
I didn't want to do the rear loading dock on this last one; I still don't. Just not in the mood to load in that particular set of details. I was watching a true crime documentary and there was an interesting little New York hotel that popped up onscreen; I thought I would do a bit of a riff on it, as it was really interesting and something I haven't done much of in the past. It's my little derivation and musing on the Hotel Seville... This has proven to be one of the harder ones I've done - I just dove into the deep end of it and started pushing stuff around, and it really came back to bite me in the end in numerous aspects. I think it is coming along swimmingly, and it's loaded with details - it's like a giant piece of strawberry shortcake that just kept getting decorated. Texturing it is going to be a bear, as there are hundreds of different objects - I really bit off a lot more than I can gag on...but I am going to really be happy with the end result...- 1,133 Replies

The Legacy Of The SimCity Series

Watched it last night. Well done. Great to see so many are still interested in the series in general, and the SC4 iteration in particular. -
Twinkle, twinkle, little BAT...

Must. Stop. BATting. Midrise. Office. Buildings... I usually don't texture until most of the modeling is done, but I couldn't stand looking at it "naked" anymore. More to add, glass texture needs to be done; the rooftop details still need to be decided. How many more of these do I have in me...?- 1,133 Replies

A couple more of those CS$$ to add. I kind of like doing these little guys, you can sit down and five hours later, you've got a cute little BAT to render. The first one is Harry's Haberdashery, and the second is McClelland's Prime Meats.- 1,133 Replies

Twinkle, twinkle, little BAT...
madhatter106 replied to madhatter106's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
Thanks, @IDS2 - it's not the type of building I would have BATted from my imagination, but driving past this for years and years, it suddenly struck me that it would make a great BAT to see in-game. I like the arches, too - though there are (in reality) transom windows above the doors/bays, instead of being filled in like I modelled them. It just looked weird in gmax, so I made a little modification. I like the window configuration in the front view - the fact that the columns of windows don't line up with the center of each bay is an interesting touch. Okay, so the collection of office buildings may be released very soon - thanks to the very rigorous and relentless testing of @brancra (who put them all through their paces to see if there were any problems with them), these should be bundled up and available for download. It will be the biggest one that I've ever produced - there are a whopping twenty-two different offices in the pack. I'm astounded, myself, but then again it makes sense, since I have been doing them off and on for years... Now I just need to muster up the resolve to mod and lot the next group of medium wealth commercial services (the two and three-storey ones). Ugh, the Reader...!- 1,133 Replies

Roof access added. The original building has something very similar. I suppose I should light the ground floor lobby and front entrance...- 1,133 Replies

It's been a year. Ugh what a year. Too many BAT irons in the fire, but I just sat down the past day or so to try to unwind and take my mind off the crazy of late, and I ended up BATting this little office building, based on a building I drive by nearly every day. I saw it last week and thought, "hmmm that would look nice in SC4..." Needs textures and nightlights and finish work and details. And then needs the query and the modding and the lotting, and all that other stuff I don't wanna do with all the BATs I've done over the past several years...- 1,133 Replies

jmyers2043 over on SC4Devotion has a number of residential Craftsman style houses, which help vary and dilute the standard Maxis pool. In fact, anything by jmyers2043 is good, download his whole catalog. I love the stuff that @dk1 did here; it's been ages since he's uploaded anything, but what he shared was great.

Which is the most used BAT building software?
madhatter106 replied to Pakistani890's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
There is not a most correct piece of software for making BATs. Much like there isn't a set, single way to make art. (Not that I am equating all BATs to art, but you get the idea.) An artist may use watercolors to create, just as another might use oil paints. Some people use SketchUp, others use 3dsMax, others use gmax. And all three can achieve a desirable result. Some might be easier to learn or work with than others, but you find your own groove and way of doing things, and make it work from there. -

The investors meeting has already begun, you haven’t had a chance to email the year’s set of income statements, and there’s an accounting error on the balance sheet; if you’d rather talk deals, mergers, acquisitions, or just sift through ten years’ worth of tax statements, then this pack is for you. Presenting yet another set in a series of office buildings to provide some variety to your commercial business district. Included in this upload are the following establishments… Arbuckle Escrow Company Deane Tanner & Associates Oneida Insurance Agency Reid Capital Group Thomas Commercial Realty The Hays Corporation Rubens, Hansen & La Marr The buildings here were made to complement existing Maxis office buildings. This pack contains 7 different buildings over a total of 50 lots. They range from stage 4 to stage 6, offering from 141 to 301 commercial office jobs and are split between CO$$ and CO$$$. All have been lotted similar to their Maxis counterparts in order to blend in; as such, there are no dependencies for this pack. All have nightlights, custom queries, and stats similar to previous offerings. So, drop off those receipts to the accounting department, set up that conference call to the Tokyo branch office, and make sure the senior vice president has the numbers he needs for the meeting that’s going to start in five minutes… Enjoy!- 27 Comments

I am looking to finish a diagonally-placed building that will be on a square or rectangular lot. I am doubting that there are any standard Maxis textures and car props that are set on diagonals, as I'm pretty sure nearly 100% of their stuff is grid-based. So the question is, who has a good dependency set of textures and props for such lotting? Are they set at 45 degree angles, or something more acute? Something preferably not TOO "un-Maxis," as I want to make it blend in with the Maxis stuff and my other custom content. I figured I would have to look at the lotting as a whole before I finish and render the building, rather than paint myself into a corner and have to re-do and re-render when I finally opened the Lot Editor and started playing around. Any leads or info appreciated...

Hate wasting money on overpriced drinks at your local bar or watering hole? Do you enjoy a nice cabernet with your Saturday evening meals? Or maybe you and your frat buddies need to make a last minute trip to stock up for this weekend's rush party? If so, then this pack is for you; presenting ten different liquor stores and junior markets over a series of 25 different lots, carrying everything from cheap bear to expensive champaigne. Included in this upload are the following establishments... Ladd Liquor Ken's Corner Kegs Red's Liquor Mart Hal's House of Liquor Bottom's Up Liquor Pink Elephant Liquor Bernie's 24 Hour Liquor Vinnie's Vino The Booze Barn Cap & Cork Fine Wine and Spirits The majority are CS$ stages 1 through 3, while the last three are CS$$ stage 1. Jobs range from 11 to 30, and lot sizes are mostly 1x1 and 1x2, with some 1x3 and 2x1 thrown in for good measure. Stats have been compiled in accordance with prior uploads, and all have nightlights as well. And there's not a single dependency in the bunch... So whether your tastes are as exotic as pricey French wines with unpronouncable names or as simple as a bottle of Thunderbird in a brown paper bag, there's something here for you. Just be sure to give your buddy the car keys after that second or third drink - that is, if he isn't more blitzed than you are. Enjoy!- 35 Comments

Living in Los Angeles, dingbats have been a common sighting while driving around. There's a great discussion of them in the movie Slums of Beverly Hills, where I first heard to term used. "They promise the good life, but never deliver." I have been tempted to model some of them, but they are very distinct, and not sure how they would mesh with other tilesets. The trick is the garages on the ground floor fronts - if there are doors to them (which is not usually the case) and they are open, you need to model/include the cars and vehicles that are parked inside of them. Or at least the portion of the vehicles that might be seen inside the garage from the various game angles. Not an impossible task, but an extra consideration, and since I usually don't model vehicles (having only done a couple to varying degrees of success, at least on the quick cursory surface level), dingbats are something I have always set aside mentally when figuring out projects. I am not sure I would classify the architecture of a dingbat as Streamline Moderne - I think they would be considered more Mid-Century Modern. Barely. They are so sparse, with the exception of their fancy names ("ooooh, the Casa Rivera") and a couple of winging ornaments on the front facade, just above that 1972 Pinto parked in the first spot on the right. They would never have those great circular nautical style windows or curved corners that seem to typify Streamline. Having lived in Los Angeles for more than twenty years, I've just realized that I never lived in one. Driven by millions, been in a couple (oh they are just as depressing inside as they are on the outside, maybe moreso) but never signed a lease for one.

For me, it's having to play fire captain every time a warehouse starts smoking. In real life, no one exclaims, "Oh my God, the catfood canning factory is on fire! We must call the mayor, quickly!" -
Did you know that only a single person has served both as an actor in and a director of different episodes of the classic TV show The Twilight Zone? Ida Lupino was featured in the first season episode entitled "The Sixteen-Millimeter Shrine," as well as directing the fifth season episode entitled "The Masks." Lupino also has the distinction of being the only woman to have directed an episode of the original show.

CoriBoom Pre Beta - Opera House Fix Testing for ModPacc Zero
madhatter106 replied to CorinaMarie's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
(singing) "He's here! The Phaannnntom of the Oooopera House bug!" I am very curious as to the outcome of all this, as it would be nice to get the house de-bugged. Personally, my cities never get to a population or threshold where it's even offered to me. Still, it would be nice if my wealthy, culture snob Sim patrons got a chance to dust off their tuxedos, snag the great aunt's Harry Winston earrings and necklace, and attend the gala opening of the season's production of Turandot. Even if they are going to nod off during the aria in the second act, having had one too many glasses of chardonnay during the prior intermission.- 8 Replies
