Despite being colonized in the 19th century, today the islands stand strong together under the worship of the ancient native gods of commerce and fertility. The discovery of copper and basalt mines, as well as oil deposits located just off the coast, have allowed the nation to thrive. Although on the surface a thoroughly modern nation, tourists who come to sun themselves on the beaches and enjoy the local nightlife, the scuba diving and the legal cannabis should be advised not to wander too far off the beaten path lest they fall afoul of the ancient spirits who call the island chain home.
