  2. South Tyrell: Industrial Crossroads

    Hello again, and welcome back to our continuing tour of the City of Tyrell. Today we're going to finally leave the port area and enter the city proper, getting our first look at how the citizens of Tyrell live and work. We'll be sticking to the south bank of the Neskowin River, exploring the industrial parks and poorer neighborhoods which have sprung up over the decades, drawn to the ceaseless economic activity of the southern port terminals. These districts are not exactly old, but have seen relatively little redevelopment since the first waves of construction spread across area in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. As such, these neighborhoods are still dominated by the mid-century brickwork of factories and warehouses, with only the odd hi-tech start-up and re-purposed residential loft breaking the sightline. We'll start in the far south, across the fence from the container yards we visited last entry. Far from any home or office building, this borough hosts only the heaviest (and dirtiest) industry in the city, and serves as the final destination for much of the raw material imports rolling off the nearby docks. Crossing over highway 110, large-scale manufacturing gives way to large-scale logistics and distribution. We're now in the true industrial heartland of Tyrell, downstream of all the port infrastructure we spent so much time exploring. In addition to enormous warehouses and shipping depots, smaller-scale manufacturing concerns and industrial services can be found, which eventually bleed over into our first mixed use and residential neighborhoods in the north. Further inland, the local freight branches of the rail network intersect with the regional train corridor. Crossing to the other side, we begin to see the first signs of redevelopment, with modern hi-tech industry arriving in the last two decades. Clean energy startups in particular have made a home here. Next we move north to the most prominent feature of South Tyrell's skyline: the Mario M. Koeberg Nuclear Power Station. This facility, one of the largest single employers in the city, provides power not just for Tyrell proper, but for much of the broader metropolitan area and satellite communities further afield. First commissioned in 1971 with one reactor, the plant has expanded over the years to its current, 2002-built configuration, boasting four operational reactors and eight underground turbine rooms. Water is provided by a series of pumps, drawing directly from an artificial inlet running between port terminals A and B. The power station has had to expand so much to meet the growing energy demands of Tyrell, that highway 110 had to be rerouted to make way for its current footprint. Electricity generated by the plant powers much of the region further south along the coast. Continuing beyond the Koeberg Station, we come to one of the original neighborhoods of the industrial district. This still consists largely of smaller service shops and family-owned businesses, with some buildings being slowly converted into studio lofts. Finally, we arrive at the neighborhoods around the mouth of the Neskowin River. This is a lower-income neighborhood, built amongst and adjacent to contemporary industrial buildings. Highlights include the Riverwalk, a pedestrian loop around the lower reaches of the Neskowin and one of the oldest public spaces in the city; and Commerce Street Station, the second largest rail terminal in Tyrell and the main gateway for industrial workers arriving from out of town. We'll see much of Commerce Street today, but the rest of the Riverwalk will have to wait for a later entry. Looming above Commerce Street Station is the Florence Autobody Assembly Plant, one of the largest of its kind in Simnation. We'll conclude here for now, back near the mouth of the Neskowin and the busy harbor. However, we're not quite done with Tyrell's industrial development. Next time, we'll look at some of the newest and most advanced manufacturing installations in the country. We'll also get an idea of what the landscape used to look like before those installations came to town, by travelling all the way to the edge of the city and the hills and forests beyond. Next entry will be a combination of hi-tech commerce and rustic R&R. See you then.

    My first foray back into custom content after ~ten years away from the game, this pack is a DHL-themed building set. My earlier mostly-airports content posted at @joelyboy911. Originally intended as a lot for inclusion with modular airports, I have also included a non-airport themed I-M (Manufacturing) Ploppable lot. The building is loosely based on a real cargo facility at Auckland Airport in New Zealand. The pack contains the following lots: DHL Air Freight Centre - the main lot for placing in your airport, with the buildings and two cargo planes. This lot provides some I-M jobs. Additional plane parking lots - expand your air freight centre with extra planes (Boeing 777, 757, and Airbus A330), plus empty parking space and filler Non-Airport I-M Ploppable DHL Parcel Centre - uses the same buildings but not designed as part of modular airport. Similar style of lotting. Two building models are included (the office block and the warehouse). The Airbus A330 and Boeing 777 models are also included. The other props (including the Boeing 757) are found in the dependencies below. The original B777 model was made by pilotdaryl (adapted by me). There are a number of dependencies for the lots. Sorry!   9. SimPrague Bata Shoe Factory 24 and 25

    Happy New Year! A little present for all of you industrial geeks. Before we return to Prague, we had to stay in Zlín for a while and build a few more factory buildings of the Bata Shoe Manufacturing Company. Similarly to others in the town, they are based on a 6,15 x 6,15 metre reinforced concrete frame, filled with bricks. Circular columns give us a hint that these manufactures were built in 1930s. Unfortunately, they were demolished recently (while their neighbors were renovated for various purposes). Buildings 24 and 25 are smaller than my previously uploaded 44, but they are connected by another part and make a nice ensemble, which I used to create a variety of lots. In fact, there are many lots, both ploppable and growable (see below). TECH STUFF IMPORTANT NOTE: Check the SimPrague_readme.txt to learn more about the project! IMPORTANT NOTE: SimPrague project uses a consistent 133% scale! Sorry if it doesn't fit your city. This pack contains the following models and lots: 2 models of main buildings (24 and 25), each in two texture variants, plus several parts to combine in larger lots: a connection, a small warehouse and a loading bay. 4 growable 7x4 lots, each containing exactly one of the 4 main building models, grows in high density industrial zones and employs ca. 230 workers. Zoning exactly sized areas with ctrl+drag helps, also make sure you have population at least 10 thousand and enough demand for I-m. 4 ploppable 7x4 lots, found in the landmark menu and functioning similar as the growables. The lots are slightly different though. 2 growable 8x8 lots, each containing two of the main buildings and some other parts as props. They grow in high density industrial zones and offer 780 resp. 860 jobs. 2 ploppable 8x8 lots and 1 ploppable 7x7 "compact" lot, all found in the landmark menu. They are different from the growable lots and offer 720 I-m jobs. 1 growable 3x2 "small warehouse" lot, which grows in the high density industrial zone and offers 45 I-m jobs. That is 14 unique lots in total. Night lighting is modest, usually only a small part of the building is lit, one of the models is entirely dark if it suits you better. There is only one night version, but I've tested it and it looks fine with and without SimFox Day'n'Nite Mod. DEPENDENCIES NOTE for beginners: Dependencies are props and other files that are useful and generally accessible online, so you don't want to include them again in any new upload. It can be annoying the first few times you spend half an hour downloading them, but as they are so widely used by all other BATters as well, you will soon find yourself having most of them or being able to skip some.   10. What is the process to get manufacturing industry to build? It seems I have a demand for dirty and it stays dirty for years and years and years. I make a connection to a neighbor and it stays dirty dirty dirty, maybe a small teeny tiny manufacturing demand. Build an elementary school and after the education catches up a bit, I get a bit more demand for manufacturing and dirty drops a bit. Then a few more years its BAM! Off to the races with hi-tech and no more demand for dirty or manufacturing. So I end up with a city full of Googles and Apples and pharmaceuticals all with a bunch of 6th grade education peeps. What I want is a nice manufacturing city.

These sorts of solidly constructed brick factories were common-place in the early 20th Century. While most were torn down, some still remain either as abandoned relics or as converted commercial/residential spaces. The building is offered as a functional I-M ploppable which has custom foundation walls and is modded so that it can be placed along the sloping areas of a river bank (thus leaving the retaining wall exposed to the water) and an I-M 3x2 growable Anchor lot.
