Fort Chessleman, Delores Island
First built by the Spanish, then occupied by the French, Dutch, and finally the English, the old coastal fort has fallen into disrepair. Most of the old structures were recycled as building materials for nearby farms. Today, only two prominent gun emplacements remain to tell the story of the imperial power once symbolized by cannons overlooking the bay. Today they overlook residential towers and the seafront promenade, and the only warships that ply these waters are those of the Royal Sisters Navy.
