The Future of SC4 Modding: The Matter of Digital vs. Disc, and Windows vs. macOS in the DLL Era
Terring replied to Tarkus's topic in SC4 Modding - Open Discussion
This approach is useful for plop-able buildings, like the City Facilities Central made by @happyapple. Comes in handy for plop-able arcologies, but not for grow-able mixed buildings. Here in Europe it's very common to find commercial services and offices into apartment buildings, such as barber shops and attorney offices right under your home. But illegal? How so? -
The Future of SC4 Modding: The Matter of Digital vs. Disc, and Windows vs. macOS in the DLL Era
Terring replied to Tarkus's topic in SC4 Modding - Open Discussion
There's a big difference between arcologies and vertical farms. A vertical farm still belongs in a single type of zoning (industrial-agricultural), while an arcology should be a mix of different types of zones to work properly. I don't know if it's possible to have grow-able mixed-use buildings with DLLs, but they would be incredible useful because this type of urban development is very common in real life, such as apartment buildings with medical offices of factories with mini shops in them. -

Holy cow! The need for some kind of submenus to solve the clustering problem was the reason behind the development of DAMN. That's awesome!

25 years already? Holy cow, what a time to be alive! SimCity 3000 was my very first SimCity experience. I remember myself being a teenager back in 1999, experimenting and failing miserably in my attempts to build the best city, believing that the "no power" signs were sculptures, learning English words such as landfills and taxes, discovering exotic technologies like waste-to-energy incineration and desalinization plants, and overall "wasting" my time on that game to the point of cutting class just to play it. In the year 2000 I became a Britney Spears fan and I build a city for her, named Britney City. No pictures sadly, but I think I still have a copy of the city somewhere. And let's be honest, SC3K is the best SC game ever. Even though SC4 is indeed awesome and technically superior to any other SC game (yes, it can even eat SC13 for lunch), it have never gotten the cozy, silly, jazzy, wholesome feeling of SC3K. And I think this is my favorite part of SC3K. The colorful feeling of building your urban empire in a digital nutshell.

OK, everybody (and everypony), I think it's high time for me to learn some modding. I'm working on something cool but I'll need your help. I want to use those subterranean hangars made by @2ch.net simplayer: but I need them as props, not as buildings. What tools do I need to create prop versions of those models and how to do that?
-
Or maybe make it modular. Break the plaza into smaller pieces to avoid the prop limits problem and enable some flexibility and customization

Need to fill some gaps in your cities with something nice and simple, but you can't decide between trail paths, plazas or parks? Now you can have them all as Plaza-Parks, a new addition for your already filled parks menu Plaza-Parks is a collection of 28 1x1 lots that allows you to build parks and fill gaps at any shape, size and design you wish. I got this idea for the first time when I was making my lots many years ago while I was playing with some Maxis overlay textures, and finally is high time to put the idea into practice. The aim of the Plaza-Park project is to create a flexible set of small pieces, in order for you to build a huge variety of modular stand-alone parks of any size and shape you want, or to use them as fillers to fill empty spaces and separate buildings with something nice, without the need of extra custom-made textures and props, allowing all kind of players to use them, no matter what they already have (or have not) in their plugin folder. Plaza-Parks can be used to close gaps, divide structures and zones, and surround buildings like museums and bus stops, but you can also build entire parks with those pieces to give your Sims a nice place to relax. For an even better result, try mixing them with extra stuff, like playgrounds, extra plazas and whatever you have in your plugins folder. Endless compilations and building possibilities guarantee. Or your money back Installation is very simple. Just unzip the .zip file into your plugins folder. Next time you check your Parks and Recreation menu you'll find them at the top of it waiting for you. There are 28 pieces, so take your time to learn them. Don't worry if you use the Uniform Street Lighting Mod, since the street lights I used doesn't affected by it, and I believe that Light Replacement Mod users will have no problem with the lights too. As about the trees, if you don't like them you can use a tree replacement mod or open the Lot Editor to customize them however you wish. Plaza-Parks uses only Maxis-made stuff, so everybody can use them. And so, no need for dependencies, right? Well, technically, Plaza-Parks does has one dependency, which is useful but fully optional. That's SPOT (Simpeg Plop Orientation Tool), a set of props that can help you find the piece you want and orient it according to your needs. Plaza-Parks will not suffer without it. You'll not get empty lots or brown boxes if you don't get SPOT, but it will save you a lot of time if you use it. The choice is your. Have fun -
Apart from the extraordinary level of details, what I mostly enjoyed with @paeng's work is how he could pick simple elements and put them into the most creative ways possible, leading us to a galaxy of unique lots. You would never get bored with his creations

#20yearsSC4 Challenge - Gothic, Horror and/or Supernatural
Terring replied to Ulisse Wolf's topic in SC4 Challenges - Info and Discussion
Like Insects in Palms #20yearsSC4 From the moment we looked at those wandering bright spots in the night sky we call "planets" through our telescopes, and discovered that are not supernatural entities but worlds like ours, we begun wondering if they're barren and lifeless deserts, or populated by strange plants, animals and people like us. Eventually, we discovered that the stars we see in the night sky are suns like ours, with their own planets and moons, and begun speculating life on those distant worlds as well. Discovering that we're not alone in the Universe would be the most exciting, astonishing and Earth-shattering moment in human history, maybe even more than when we learned that Earth and us are not the center of the Universe. The Universe is vast and ancient, full of stars, planets and nebulae, and thus all the building blocks and environments that life needs to evolve on some of those worlds. Theoretically, everything could be found out there, from humble microbial life to magnificent space-faring civilizations. The 21st century was the age that our endless search for our cosmic siblings have finally came to fruition. By 2060, and thanks to the most advanced probes, rovers, telescopes and AIs exploring the Solar System and scanning our stellar neighbors, we discovered microbes on Mars, aquatic ecosystems on Europa and Enceladus, exotic worm-like lifeforms on Titan and biosignatures at exoplanets' atmospheres, and we have even taken clear pictures of Earth-like exoplanets, with oceans and green continents. Yes, there is life out there. Earth is not the only world blessed with the gift of life. What a beautiful timeline to live in. And yet, despite being bombarded by those historic discoveries, no alien signals from any distant star have been received, no technosignatures from polluted exoplanetary atmospheres have been detected, no abandoned alien spacecraft somewhere in our Solar System have been discovered, no megastructures like Dyson Spheres enclosing other suns have been spotted, nothing to indicate the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations at all. It's as if life itself is abundant, but intelligence exists only on Earth. It looks like, in such a huge and ancient universe, we're indeed alone. The idea of being alone was so frightening, many scientists simply refused to accept it. How could it be possible? Why? That can't be true, right? Where is everybody? What's going on here? The lack of discoveries leaded to worrisome implications. Is there something that prevents advanced civilizations to emerge? If yes, what is it? Is intelligence really self-destructive by its nature? And what about us? Is there a great filter ahead of us? Are we just doomed to destroy ourselves by our tools and means, no matter what we do? Environmentalists, activists and philosophers have embraced the possibility of being alone and used it as a vehicle, to warn us that if it's true, if we're indeed the only intelligent species in the entire Universe, we ought to take care of ourselves, stop wars and environmental destruction, become a global brotherhood, and venture to the stars to secure our long-term survival. And yet, many scientists rejected the idea of us being alone. Just because we haven't find alien civilizations out there doesn't mean they don't exist at all. Maybe we just haven't find them yet. That's all. Or maybe we're the most advanced species in our galactic corner and our nearest neighbors are still in Stone or Industrial Age. Or maybe, if we make our presence known to anybody out there by screaming loud enough, somebody would listen to us. This was the aim of the Big Scream, a world-wide project of broadcasting ourselves into the Cosmos, by using our radio-telescopes to send signals and messages in carefully selected stars which are the most likely to have planets with civilizations advanced enough to communicate with us. And one day, after years of patient broadcasting and listening, we finally got a signal. After long and meticulous analyzes to ensure that it wasn't made by human means or any astronomical phenomenon, such as satellites or distant novae, scientists could safely came to the conclusion that yes, this signal was indeed artificial. Somebody heard us and send us a reply. There was somebody out there who wanted to speak with us. An answer. A message from another world. Although the scientists hadn't been decipher it yet, the signal by itself was more than enough to make everybody jump around from happiness. United, Mankind was celebrating with fireworks and parties all around the world. After so many years of search, we finally have the answer. We're not alone! But when the scientists finally analyzed the signal and deciphered the message, they shockingly discovered that it wasn't a reply to our call for communication. It was a request for us to be silenced. “Children of Earth, we’ve been receiving your transmissions. You must cease broadcasting immediately, stop sending signals into deep Space and be quiet, or else they’ll hear you. It may already be too late for you.” What? What's going on here? Who wants us to be quiet and why? "They"? Who are "They"? What are "They"? What makes them so fearsome? What kind of danger we have unintentionally put ourselves in? But to make matter worse, this was just the beginning. Soon, Mankind started getting similar signals from everywhere. When deciphering them, it turns out they were warnings, harrowing cries for help, and goodbyes from other species with which we hadn't make contact. There are so many voices in the sky, and all of them full of fear and terror. Soon it became clear that those messages indicating that something terrible is happening out there right now, and it may be moving in our direction. We pointed our telescopes at the cosmic unknown to discover what's going on out there, who are "They", what are "They", and in what kind of danger we're in. Whatever it is, we must find it before it find us first. At the same time, nations from around the world agreed to put their differences aside and team up to protect our planet and ourselves from the threat of something never happened before in Mankind's history; an alien invasion. USA and Russia, China and Japan, Pakistan and India, Israel and Palestine, black and white, Christians and Muslims, we're all together and we'll be fighting united against whatever the Universe is going to throw at us. We have each other. We're together. We will prevail! But alas, big words from small creatures. Without any warning, the sky from all around the Earth suddenly changed color. The natural and familiar blue we know and love was replaced by an alien mix of deep blue, pink and purple colors twisted together in an organic way. Out of nowhere, large, concentric circular shapes with radiating waves and beams-like morphs, which they look like having a jelly, organic nature, appeared at the skies around the world. For some, they looked like a pack of cosmic jellyfishes in a collision course with Earth. Others described them like alien eyes watching us. And for others, it was as if the reality itself came into live. Whatever these... things are, they're now covering our planet, just like a human handling a small insect in his/her palm and covering it under his/her fingers. This huge, exotic, otherworldly, utterly alien entity terrified all the citizens of out tiny, little Earth. Some were screaming panicked and trying to hide from those things. Others were praying to whatever god they believed to take those eldritch abominations away. Others were staying still, watching them in awe and fear. And others, under the (justified?) fear of the unknown, preferred to commit suicide. But the scientists soon realized in horror what this strange entity is. It's Them. They heard us. They found us. They're here. And now we're at their mercy, like insects in their palms. (Alien entity belongs to Melodysheep)- 5 Replies

Railway & Monorail Design Strategies
Terring replied to BlueCloud's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Monorail is designed to offer the fastest possible Mass Transit solution and (maybe?) being a more attractive choice for the wealthier Sims than heavy rail, but also more expensive and not that flexible on slopes. I think comparing monorail with heavy rail is a bit like comparing Concorde with Boeing 747. -
Let me welcome you, too. Or, as we say in Greece, καλώς ήρθες (kalós írthes)

What music genre you hate the most and why?

That sounds a lot like Greek trap. Terrible music, voices so autotuned they sound like robots, and lyrics full of sexism, materialism and violence. -

Cities Skylines 2 Out Now!
Terring replied to Ulisse Wolf's topic in Cities: Skylines General Discussion
This is what happened to me and SimCity 4 20 years ago. When it was released, it was such a heavy and advanced game that the PC I had back then couldn't handle it. 5 years had to pass before I finally managed to play it for the first time, in 2008. Of course I'm not saying that we have to wait for 5 years to get better computers and equipment to play Cities Skylines 2. I'm just saying that history is kind of repeating itself. No matter how advanced and ambition your game is, always try your best to make it as accessible as possible to as many people as possible, without making too many sacrifices if possible. It sucks that not everybody can play the game right now, but more accessibility means more players and more money to financially support your projects and your company. That's a good reason to optimize your game, I suppose.
