CoriBoom 1st Beta - Opera House Fix for ModPacc Zero
CorinaMarie posted a topic in SC4 Modding - Open Discussion
Comprehensive Opera House Bug Fix (for ModPacc Zero) While the name of the first person to discover the game breaking bug with the Opera House reward has been lost in the sands of time, we do know @toroca created the Opera House Fix mod back in March of 2004. However, that mod alone is insufficient if your city tile's population passes (roughly) the one million mark and, ofc, not using their mod means the trouble can start around 50k population. There are caveats to when the problem occurs (or re-occurs) based on the age demographics, but just know if you are going to create very densely populated cities and use the Opera House, you will need an enhanced version. That's where we come in. (CB and me.) We have strong feelings about what a truly good fix should encompass. It must not require one to bulldoze every single occurrence of the building in every single city tile in every single region where it's been plopped. That's super tedious and it's way too easy to forget one. The penalty for failing this onerous pre-mod-install bulldozing is the Phantom Slider Bug. Our ModPacc Zero Opera House Fix does not require any bulldozing. Now because the method we're using to create the new mod was unknown in ye olden dayes, there has to be two versions to cover everyone. The one with "Override Vanilla" in its name is for anyone who has ever plopped an Opera House without using Toroca's mod or who are building their plugins from the ground up to play new regions. Ofc, knowing a multitude of peeps have been using Toroca's mod for ages, we've made one that can be used in that case as well. Hence the need for two versions. So, let's get started with determining which version of the Opera Houses you might have already in place in your cities. You can search for OperaHouse.dat within your plugins, but this won't help if you have renamed the file or DatPacked your plugins. The other method is to simply ask the building. A vanilla Opera House will look like this for the hover over and query: Whereas the Toroca version will look like this: ^ Note how the names are identical. This is because Toroca's version keeps the Opera House name the same. Once you know which you have, you then install our enhanced ModPacc Zero Opera House Fix. If you need the Toroca version then, ideally, remove OperaHouse.dat from your plugins. If that's not possible, no worries. Just be sure the MZ version loads after the one you have either buried in plugins, renamed to something else, or DatPacked. Now you can load a city which has an Opera House and continue playing with the assurance that if there are more patrons than it can handle, there will be a strike to let you know. ^ We can only use the generic school warning so we'll prolly update the message accordingly at a later time. Let's look at the MZ version now. Assuming you already have an Opera House plopped, it will appear grayed out in the Education Menu. I placed it there since it gives an EQ boost and that just makes way more sense to me than in the Parks menu. Also, I don't display it in the Rewards Menu since that's adding clutter we don't need. We have retained the same increase from 1,200 patrons to 25,000 patrons as Toroca's original mod. Here's how it looks in the menu when there is already an Opera House placed: Then because 25,000 will only handle up to about a million Sims, we've taken @BartonThinks's idea to have a pressure relief auxiliary building, but instead of changing to the different stats of a museum, CB lotted one and set it as the same class as the Opera House. It uses only Maxis content so there are no dependencies. The new Maxis Cultural Theater is in the Education Menu below the Opera House: ^ Note: It shows available because this mod checks for an Opera House whether that's Vanilla, Toroca's, or our new MZ versions. Now, there's no way we can determine whether an existing Opera House is Vanilla or Toroca's so this part is based on each person installing the correct MZ mod. With our mod installed, the Vanilla Opera House will disappear from menus and it'll now look like this in the game: And Toroca's will look like this: It's not necessary to bulldoze the old one unless it's being overwhelmed and goes on strike. At this point you can bulldoze it and immediately plop the new one. The MZ version will be the only one in the Education menu. Or, you can plop as many Maxis Cultural Theaters as you like and handle the overage that way. Edit: To clarify, if a Vanilla Opera House is overwhelmed and goes on strike you can either bulldoze it and plop the new MZ version or plop the Maxis Cultural Theater(s) and adjust their sliders to handle the overflow. If it's a Tororca's that goes on strike you can adjust its slider. Only if there isn't enough capacity (like in a city with a million or more Sims) would you need to use the auxiliary Theater. Ofc, for either Opera House you can safely bulldoze the Vanilla one or Toroca's and then plop the MZ version. (Just be sure you have the correct MZ file in your plugins.) If you've never plopped an Opera House, when the criteria is met, it'll appear in the menu like this: The Maxis Cultural Theater will not be available until you've plopped the Opera House (and run a wee bit of time). This is the ModPacc Zero version. Notice it also shows the Apples Grade on the hover over. After plopping the Opera House and running some time, the advisor will inform you of the auxiliary building: You can accept right then or decline and wait till later to plop it. Once you do plop the Maxis Cultural Theater, it'll look like this: Additionally, the Opera House (and any Maxis Cultural Theaters) will show up in the Master Education Budget. Here we're showing one plop using Toroca's mod, but with MZ overriding: Ofc, we are looking for peeps to put this thru its paces and give us feedback on how it works. As a beta version be sure you have a complete backup of any cities prior to testing, and it's best to not save them for later play after plopping just in case we need to make any updates. The most important part is to use the correct version. If you have plopped any with Toroca's mod installed then use the one for that. Otherwise, use the Vanilla Override one. Hi, I've been working on a city simulation game called Zcity. Currently in late alpha. Downloads in post. Gameplay Video: https://youtu.be/DYODbw5OOsQ (older version) Download: https://farorbit.itch.io/zcity Changelog: Version 0.6.5 Added saving and loading of zones Version 0.7.0 Fixed zone tile visibility issues with terrain bug Fixed way overly conservative road grade limits to allow for actually building roads at a grade Disabled loss of detail for terrain due to too many issues when moving around Version 0.8.1 Full implementation (at least it should be a full implementation) for saving and loading added, please let us know if you find any bugs Version 0.8.3 Fixed some saving and loading bugs Added batching for landfill tiles Known Issues/Bugs: There is currently no disaster system implemented. Because there is no disaster system implemented, fire stations are currently only decorational (other than costing money monthly) Loss of Detail (LOD) sometimes acts weird when you move around Saving is only partly implemented Saving and loading should be fully implemented but may still have a few bugs Loading buildings outside of the built-in file is not currently fully implemented Only basic coloration of higher and lower terrains Large maps can be slow and laggy Cities can start to be slow and laggy as they get to be large

Evening one and all I have volunteered to take on the Omnibus as a project, in the next few weeks people will start to see the knowledge tree articles from these sites (all belong to Simtropolis) start to be added to the Omnibus http://www.sc4ever.com http://www.sc3000.com http://www.sc3000.com/sc2000/info/ As anyone who has visited them will realize they are using very old site software and to be honest its amazing that they still work but they do crash quite frequently these days, the priority is to make sure the contents of these sites are also available here at Simtropolis should the worse happen. I think we all realize just what a mess the Omnibus is in, and that finding the document you are looking for can be a bit of a miracle, unfortunately in the short term things aren't going to be getting any better as I will be adding quite a few more articles into it, but I would like everyone who reads this post or has ever used the Omnibus to please start thinking about what categories (and sub-categories) are needed, if its possible to change the layout of the Omnibus then what would you like to see, to give you an example the BlackLiquid (Banished Forums) website uses the same software as Simtropolis and its wiki looks like this. http://blackliquidsoftware.com/index.php?/articles.html/ So please everyone give it some thought and all suggestions are welcome ... may not be doable but it still helps to get an idea of what people want to see in the future. -catty

Site Upgrade Announcement I'm pleased to announce @Dirktator has confirmed that today, Simtropolis is scheduled to receive a significant site upgrade. In the process we'll be incrementing the site's version to ST9.0. The latest major update to the IPS Suite will be applied to bring a whole host of new and exciting features. Most notably: Reactions This will give more flexibility to describe why you like a content item. It'll allow Reactions to be tailored to best suit our community, such as with custom sets & icons. Recommended Replies A way for helpful, informative or useful replies to be highlighted inside a thread. Will be a way of drawing attention to popular posts, including those providing answers to the OP's question. Content Messages Allow announcements or important info to be seen within a content item. Uses may include thread guidelines, reminders to follow, or even useful info for reference (e.g. links or images). Promoting Content A range of possibilities to improve the accessibility of content. STEX files, CJs, forum posts, the whole lot. Social media options can be explored, such as to connect with the site's Twitter as a content stream. Fluid Forum View Optionally view the forum via a topic list or grid mode instead of traditional categories. This is configurable for all users via a toggle, so it's possible to easily switch between the views. Editor Uploading Improvements Simplified ability to attach images and files to a post. Now possible to drag & drop into specific locations, without needing to insert manually. Gallery Improvements A range of enhancements for uploading Gallery images. Usability improvements also introduced for albums, and also the navigation with the image lightbox display. City Journals Sidebar CJ authors can optionally add a sidebar with information about their entries. This uses the post editor, so text or other media can be added. HTML access available on request. Letter Profile Photos The default avatar replaced with a random coloured background, featuring the 1st character of a username. This will only affect users who haven't changed their avatar from the anonymous grey silhouette. There's also the Clubs feature, which will restore a similar functionality to the old Groups. The advantage here is it's integrated and built into the core software, whereas previously it was a 3rd party plugin that was made incompatible. We won't be rolling out the Clubs immediately, but we have some ideas on how they can be used more effectively this time around, since they'll allow more options. Plus a visual overhaul and an assortment of other minor changes. Along with a few other surprises in store coming soon, so watch out for those too... Expected Downtime Since this is a larger update than usual, the site may be unavailable for a slightly longer period. It's scheduled anytime from 12pm noon EDT / 4pm UTC onwards (view clock), and we anticipate this will be no more than 1 hour. Should the downtime be prolonged, please check our Twitter feed for progress updates. Bugs & Stability The new version has been released in a client beta for several weeks, meaning stability has been tried & tested. However as is common with any new software product, there's a chance for undetected bugs to crop up when applied in unique environments. Please bear with us if there are any instabilities to start with, and report them below or in the bugs thread. Feedback We'd love to hear ways the site and the above features can be improved or best implemented. If you've any ideas feel free to share them below. We'll also be opening threads specifically to gain feedback on specific aspects within the next several weeks. Thanks everyone, and we hope you enjoy the new site!

community Trixies 2015-2016: General Feedback Thread
Cyclone Boom posted a topic in Trixie Awards - Community Discussion
General Feedback Thread - To help pass the time until the Awards Ceremony, here's a place to share your experiences of the new Trixies format. What went well, and how can they be improved for next year? As you're likely aware, this Trixies introduced various changes. Not only being the first time multiple years (2015 & 2016) were combined, but notably nominations were accepted in a special forum, allowing you to post and edit them in private. Based on your ideas, the Default Awards List was also created, and intended to provide a suitable baseline to cover the wide range of site contributions. In summary, here's a few possible possible topics of discussion: Award Categories Total available default awards: 101 Custom Content: 34 City Journals: 40 Community: 27 Too little? Just right? Too many? Spread between categories. Coverage of types/themes? Any confusion or conflicting awards? Did the descriptions help or hinder? Nomination Process How did you find it compared to years gone by? Were the instructions clear and easy to follow? Was it helpful to edit and view your nominations? Any issues along the way? Duration of nomination period: 23 days (including the 2 day extension). Too short? Just right? Too long? Trixies Build-up Interviews To what extent were they helpful / enlightening? Types of questions asked? Format / presentation. More for next year? Content lists (2015 / 2016) Did they help with your decision making? Were they a useful reference? Should all content have been included in the lists? Grouping per author or per category? Community discussion How could this work better in future? Anything else which could be done in build-up? Trixies Promotion Too sparse? Just right? Too excessive? When did you first become aware of the Trixies this time? How useful was the info banner at the top? Should anything else have been included? Were the countdown timers helpful? Visibility of the Trixies forum. Should any other banners have been added? Homepage features -- were they useful or too repetitive? Anything else? Post away! We're always looking to improve the Trixies, and this was really a learning experience for everyone. Hopefully it worked well as a comeback after being absent for such a long time. But like anything, there's always room for improvement going forward. So if you've any comments or suggestions (even not on the above list), big or small, please post below and we'll take them into consideration. Feel free to post multiple times in this thread to your heart's content. And of course, you don't have to answer all the above questions -- they're just pointers. Thanks! -
Hey guys so I've been working on a new map for Cities: Skylines and I'm looking for some feedback and help! First of all some basic info on the map. It's intended to be a sort of challenge map and I'm using ships instead of outside road connections. Later on I will reach the air routes and use those as well. Also I plan on using an 81 tile mod with all unlocked from start so I can reach the ports. So I started this map by using a youtube tutorial to make the basic terrain and then used some really basic Wilbur techniques to kinda clean it up. My mountains ended up really bumpy and jagged so I smoothed them out a bit in C:S and added some more small features like waterfalls, sand, resources, etc. and this is the mostly finished product and I'm using the Rhinestone Island Theme in these screenshots. That being said I do have a few small issues with it that I could use some help with. First and foremost would be to find some better trees for the forests, I used the vanilla tree's with leaves #2 and they don't quite fit in too terribly well, so if you guys know any custom asset trees you think would look nice let me know. I used a custom palm tree asset for the beaches and I quite like it but I could use some tips on placement Also some of my mountains look a bit just plopped down and bland. I've tested a few themes that add a bit nicer and more textured mountains, but I don't like the sand or something else from them, but I've only tested about 10 so any suggestions in that regard would be appreciated. And really I would rather just know how to make decent mountains than rely on a theme. Really any and all feedback/criticism/tips are welcome. I'm new here and when I do finish the map I might try and make a city journal once I start on the actual city part of it. Here's a couple more shots of the map. Thanks so much in advance!

So I've been around SimTrop now for... gosh... 13 years? Some may remember me... but wow, how time flies. If cracking SC4 and helping usher in the modding community is my only mark on this world it would be a happy one. I was also pushing for Boomtown prior to SC2013 and Cities:Skylines coming out. Now I've taking my love of modding, and mod-able games into my very own YouTube channel. Obviously I love strategy games, city builders, and open-world games. So I'm happy that Transport Fever finally came out. I just started a series with that game to go along-side the other games I cover. I am also working on a modding tutorial for FortressCraft Evolved, due out soon(tm)! So, if you have any feedback, or would like to sit back and relax please give me a visit. I am Flexible Games, and here is my channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/FlexibleGames Kind regards,

HOLT READERSHIP SURVEY Sorry, folks, not an update today. I have a few in the works, but some annoying kinks in SC4 combined with the slowness of some city tiles has slowed those down a bit. Anyways, I've been thinking about some potential changes to the way Holt is served up for a while now, since around the time it was announced that Holt would be eliminating formal storylines from updates and the current update format was adopted. In the "change" announcement I made mention to some potential future changes, but to not worry as they were a while out. That is true, it has been a while. So I thought I would reach out to you, those who follow Holt, to try and get a feel for some possible ideas and changes in the way Holt is presented. Holt is now published on 4 sites, encompassing 6 publications. This is a whole heck of a lot of work on my end. So I have been looking for ways to lighten the load when updating, so to speak, when I publish updates. I have been looking at ways to try and either keep all 6 publications going in some form, cut certain publications or launch new ways of doing updates. Based on the feedback I receive from all sites in general, it'll somewhat guide me in the decision making of where to go. Note that a potential outcome is the status quo, and that nothing really changes in terms of the number of publications and so on. Below, I list out several hypothetical/potential ways Holt could change. Your comments on what you like best about each, or which one you like the most and so on is greatly appreciated. If you like a combination of several of the scenarios below, please feel free to let my know. All feedback is appreciated. These changes, even when I get a sense for where I'll be going, won't be instant. They may happen this fall, or they could happen next summer. It all depends. So, let's get on. SCENARIO #1: How likely would you be to continue reading and/or commenting if Holt ceased publication on your SimCity fansite of choice? Would you continue to follow it on another site? Explanation: This one is semi-self explanatory. Certain Holt publications (likely 1-3) would be cut, while others are maintained. None would be deleted, those chosen for publication ending would no longer be updated. There would, of course, be the potential for it to one day begin publication again. SCENARIO #2: How likely are you to continue reading and/or commenting on Holt is full updates were no longer published on your SimCity fansite of choice, but instead teaser images linking to another publication of Holt. This being either on another SimCity community, or a new Holt website? Explanation: Certain publications would likely receive a short description on the full update along with one of the images from the update, and it would in turn be directed towards the full update on another site. Replies on these versions would be done on a rolling basis (ie. monthly) and teasers (1-2 image updates) would be published in full on these sites. Large updates are what would be reduced. SCENARIO #3: How likely would you be to continue reading/commenting on Holt if updates were moved to its dedicated site, with update teasers posted on the current publication on your community of choice? If no teasers were posted? [Would you consistently check the new Holt website for updates and/or follow @HoltDistrict for information on new updates?] Explanation: This combined potentially either scenario 1 or scenario 2 for some publications, while others would maintain full updates. The big change is full updates (and more) would be published on an all-new Holt website. This would likely be powered by WordPress, and would have the ability for comments to each update, similar to the ST CJ Blog Section and SMP Player Albums Section. This option would also mean I would begin using Twitter more again to promote updates on this new site and so on. It isn't likely all versions would be cut, but more likely 2-3 options would receive the treatment in option 1-2, or even 4. SCENARIO #4: What would your thoughts be if Holt on your favourite SimCity community was not regularly updates like other publications, but instead received "combined" updates on a semi-regular basis (ie every 1-3 months, all updates from those months would be combined into one huge update)? Explanation: In this scenario, certain publications would receive updates on a semi-monthly basis, or perhaps based on a number of updates basis, whichever at any point in time results in a "fair" amount of updates. For example, if over 2 months 5 updates each with 5 pictures are posted, after 2 months these versions would receive all 25 pictures in one go, with the potential for a couple of bonus pictures to make up for the delay in posting. This option has the potential to be combined with scenario #3, in that a new site with updates is launched with several publications going to the format described here. Whew! I know that's a lot, and I'm sure I have been rambling a bit. So, if you have any questions on the above, do not hesitate to ask! I have in mind already which route I'd prefer to go, but I am interested in seeing what others are thinking to see if that means a possible change in plans. This, combined with a planned format change to updates could make for huge change in how Holt is published, the biggest since it was published really. Again, as mentioned earlier there are no plans to immediately put any of these ideas into action, though it could happen sooner rather than later, or not. Once I have an idea of where things will be going, I will at that point make an announcement in each Holt publication on what those plans are, and how/if it will change that specific publication. And of course there is always scenario #5, things stay as they are now across all publications. I want to thank all of you for being awesome supportive over the past 2+ years, and I look forward to many more! Change can be scary, but working this out with everyone will hopefully make it less so for both you and I! I look forward to reading your thoughts, -simlink

I made a new SimCity LP and was wondering if anybody could give me some feedback regarding what I should do or if there is anything specifically that I can improve. Any feedback is appreciated My Youtube channel: www.YouTube.com/user/CarboxylGaming Thanks for any help you guys can give!

I was just wondering if anyone knows how to send feedback to EA? A group of friends and I had met to start a new region and the sever went offline some 20 mins later. I think it would be great if they could at least warn you when signing that the sever is scheduled for maintenance, or with a pop up that the sever is going offline in 5 mins. If STO and others online games manage it, EA should be able to provide this simply service as well. Its better than simply kicking the users without warning and pushing the frustration factor unnecessarily. MFG
