Coming back to our preferred subject matter, cities and their construction, there is something very profound going on in the construction of cities if Mr. Frankhauser and Batty can calculate an index of "fractality" that is higher for some cities than for others. It means that in the process of building cities humans have unconsciously created complexity by adopting certain processes at certain times, and forgotten or abolished them at other times. That is a fascinating topic of discussion, a debate which has been at the heart of the profession going back perhaps further than the vastly different paths taken by Haussmann and Cerda in the 19th century, and one that must be at the heart of the profession of urbanism today more than ever. What is the alternative to planning and deliberate design of cities, which have nothing but a history of failure to show for themselves? I've explained in a previous article how the very purpose of building cities is to create networks of buildings that handle chaos, the everyday uncertainty of future needs against the permanence of individual buildings. The very act of growing a city is an act of differentiation, creating something different from what currently exists as part of the city's network of buildings in order to fulfill a need that the existing building stock cannot fulfill. (In other words, adaptation to changing circumstances.) These differentiations can be the creation of new public spaces, such as the boulevard construction initiated by Haussmann that provided large-scale connectivity to the city of Paris, as well as the construction of new, unforeseen buildings. But this is where the architectural design approach to urbanism runs into a major problem: how can beauty and order be created out of something that must necessarily be different from everything else? The answer to that question is hidden in Benoit Mandelbrot's greatest discovery, the Mandelbrot Set. The algorithm that generates the Mandelbrot Set is, like those behind all the beautiful complex structures, extremely simple. It is a chaotic algorithm that "spins" within the boundaries of 2 and -2. For given coordinates in the plane made up of the normal and complex numbers, each coordinate will either spin forever in the orbit of radius 2, or escape after a determined number of iterations. The coordinates which never escape are defined as being part of the set. A black-on-white picture of the set is by itself very intriguing, but the true beauty of it is not revealed until we apply a system of transformation to the coordinates that were thrown out of it. If, each time we throw out a pair of coordinates, we assign to it a number equivalent to the number of iterations it took to figure out it didn't belong in the set, we will form groups of chaotic equivalence. And once we apply a single, shared transformation (a "DNA code" for the chaotic equation) to these sets, in this case defining a color for each iteration that threw out some coordinates, applying this color to these coordinates while drawing the Mandelbrot Set, we will generate this kind of geometry: This is what I refer to as structured chaos. By applying a shared system of transformation to chaotic events, we obtain complex geometry. Shared transformations are the source of the new symmetric property of fractals known as self-similarity, and they are also the source of the wholeness and beauty of those chaotic systems called life, including cities. Reflecting on the way cities have been built throughout history, the most beautiful places have been those that have shared transformations while creating differentiations. The city of Venice, which continues to inspire architects despite their inability to live up to its beauty, is a perfect example of shared transformations creating wholeness out of chaos. But to understand how to create symmetry by self-similarity, one has to be able to decompose buildings into their different scales and chaotic fields (differentiated elements). The tradition of teaching the classical orders in architecture was once an imperfect approach to granting architects this skill. The classical orders are one form of transformation system, where large-scale elements, the column, the entablature, are decomposed into smaller-scale elements, the capital, the shaft, which form the large scale elements. And so when many architects, trained to share this transformation system as part of their skill set, worked on completely different buildings, their work could easily form a larger whole; whenever they hit similar problems, they would employ the similar solution they were trained to employ. While two buildings may have completely different sizes or roofs, or one could have a bell tower while the other didn't, if both buildings had windows and columns, the windows and columns would be made the same way, and thus symmetrical to each other. This is how every building in a city was tied together in a web of geometric relationships, and it is the density of these relationships that gave cities their quality of wholeness and beauty. This property goes beyond the scale of the classical orders. It is also true of ancient Asian cities, or the mythic New York of the 1940's. Sadly the unending race for pure originality and the abandonment of hierarchical geometry by the architectural profession has made the creation of such cityscapes impossible. This has made the modern architectural profession largely parasitic of the city, and their professional ruin easily explained. Given what we now understand about generating geometric wholeness out of chaos, is there anything that justifies, other than a desire for euclidean perfection, the creation of rigid euclidean plans for cities? I have not been able to find any. The work of urbanism must be about two fundamental aspects: defining a system of transformations that will apply to all unforeseeable acts of construction in the city, at all scales, and creating the connective public space that will bind the different buildings together. Returning to Nikos Salingaros' question, the kind of a city that is a fractal is the kind that is made by applying shared transformations to chaotic events. This is the holy grail of urbanism in the 21st century. With this knowledge we can finally surpass the classical city, bury the demons of Le Corbusier and the C.I.A.M. while embracing all that technology has to offer to urbanism. - 3

Schulmania and Yoshi Park's First Coaster!
Ooh, glad to see the warm response this idea has given. @Schulmanator: There's bound to be a Splash Mountain installation soon. Wheee!! @blunder: Digital download, $5 with the core game and the two (I must admit lacklustre) expansion packs. Well worth it. @everyone: Thankyou! Moving into it... 2.1 After consultation with the Department of Feline Affairs, Yoshi Park has been given permission to build a Schulmania themed garden in the park. Currently featuring four rides, it is a family orientated corner with the motion simulator, Cheshire cat tracked ride, a circus and a twist. 2.2 The monorail will sweep around the corner of the area. The Cheshire cat ride offers views above the trees. 2.3 A snack bar has also been built, housed in a wooden shed. 2.4 And here we have Yoshi Park's first rollercoaster. A wooden monster, it has everything. Twists, turns, hills, helixes and bunny hops, it has shaped up to be a quality yet compact coaster. Lets go for a ride? 2.5 After entering the building and queuing, we grab our seat on the train and take off, being pulled around the corner and up the lift hill. 2.6 Here we go! 2.7 After racing down the hill, we throttle around the curve and experience a rough, exhilarating turn... 2.8 Running fast, the train dips back under the tower again. 2.9 We are thrown into a few hills, and ride the bunny hops. 2.10 Taking the turn hard, we dive back underneath the track again. By now, we can hit the brakes and catch our breath, as the train returns to the station. 2.11 Lets not feature an overview! 2.12 You may have wondered what this patch is here. I'm not sure yet! It could be home to more scenery, a new attraction. You can decide. So I have two questions: a. The wooden coaster remains yet unnamed, what do you think is a suitable name for it? b. What should feature next to the wood coaster here? Leave your answers in the comments section below, and don't forget to +1 if you enjoyed the update! - 2

Texaco: From Boom to Bust to Boom
So for this entry I'll be telling the roller coaster tale of Texaco, the second oldest city in the region. But first an update on how the region is doing as a whole as a lot has changed! Region Stats + (Ranking on NA East 1): Population: 213,666 (top 50%) Simoleans: 23,330,731 (top 50%) Wealth: 1411 High Wealth Sims (top 50%) Approval Rating Avg: 94% (#2 on NA East!) Education: 9466 Educated Sims (top 25%) Crime Level: 3 (not ranked) Health: 38,157 healthy sims (top 50%) Sickness: 9 sick sims (not ranked) Pollution per hour: 66 million+ per hour (top 5%) Pollution per capita: 7499 (top 50%) So now for Texaco....it was introduced in my first CJ entry as the second oldest city in the region, it is also the largest city with 76,692 residents. What is interesting about Texaco is it began as an oil town and transformed slowly into a huge producer of computers. I'll try to tell a brief story here with pics and provide some tips for people who would like to try and make the same conversion. I have to qualify this CJ by saying my documentation wasn't the best so there will be more text here than I would have liked... Here you can see what was left of the oil field. It was quite large, the patchiness is where the rigs were positioned. As you can see there is actually still a bit of oil left! As my rigs began drying out one by one, I moved them around to tap into other parts of the field but I knew eventually I would run out. At its peak, I had three fully developed oil fields and two refineries producing fuel. To run the operation Texaco's population reached about 100,000. Tip #1: Plan to re-specialize if your city is dependent on a finite resource. Use the resource to build your great work and then re-specialize! And expect huge fluctuations in population while you do it. Here is a very unartistic picture of the city today, the empty parts and where the new computer factories are where the oil fields once were.....notice the pollution....I'll get to that. As Texaco grew up during its oil boom, I began to run into the problem every mayor does...I ran out of space. I was making millions per month so I figured I'd experiment with a complete redesign of the city grid. The idea was to maximize density efficiency by having a complete high density square grid with streetcars and buses. I figured with all of the transportation options and super wide roads my network could handle anything! On every block I would have high density buildings, providing the population I would need for my huge oil operation. As you can see, the result of maximizing efficiency in terms of density is a complete traffic nightmare. No matter how many buses or streetcars I added, people couldn't get to their jobs, the refineries closed, my budget went into the red and the city went bankrupt. The city had to be bailed out by the older and wiser city of Springfield seen below. Tip #2: The first city you build in your region should not specialize in anything (except maybe education) and should have a healthy budget surplus through taxation, not transactions (recycling helps too though!). The city will provide a bank of money to fall back on for your riskier endeavors with your other cities. Texaco would have been toast without it. Having Springfield around to bailout Texaco, I was able to completely redesign the city again. This time, I began transitioning the city away from oil and into high-tech. All the while I was losing tens of thousands a month. The city reached as low as 20k people during this. The new design became the methodology I'd follow for ALL of my cities. This model consistently leads to 90%+ approval ratings in all of my cities and healthy industries. Tip #3: Methodology for good city design: Mixed Density Mixed Wealth Mixed R+C Lots and Lots and Lots of Parks T-Intersections Whenever Possible Low Density Streets Whenever Possible Limited Commuters As you can see above, Texaco was completely rebuilt using these principles. Notice there are only T-Intersections and density is mixed. Traffic moves much smoother this way. Also notice how large the blocks are, the addition of lots of parks provides a buffer that provides lots of fun things to do for your sims but also more importantly eases traffic. Commercial is placed among the residential buildings so that a large number of those working and shopping there will walk to work, again easing traffic. Of the principles, density and wealth mixing are the most tricky. Tip #4: Use exclusionary taxation to get the wealth level you want, not land value. For example, if you want a medium wealth residential building to build in an area of high land value, raise taxes on high wealth residential to 20% briefly (It won't be at that level long enough to do any lasting damage). The area zoned will build medium wealth as you've excluded high wealth through taxation. As soon as the wealth level you want builds, immediately de-zone and lower taxes back to where they were. One thing I should also say is that you shouldn't mix high wealth with low wealth, high wealth sims are unhappy with this, instead, mix medium wealth with both. To mix density you have to upgrade or downgrade the road where you are zoning, pick the road appropriate for the density you want, zone, and as soon as the density you want builds, immediately de-zone and return the road to its former state (if it changed). The methodology has an obvious drawback where it limits your population size quite a bit (no megalopolises here) but I'll delve into this design methodology more in future posts, back to Texaco! With the new design working great and the high-tech conversion underway everything is great, right? Not quite. As I pointed out earlier, it seems that Computer Factories produce immense amounts of pollution. Who knew?? Wow, that's a lot of pollution, and pollution leads to very sick sims and there is not much you can do about it if you still want to produce computers. The best you can do is plant trees and parks but I've found this to be not very effective. What you can do is treat the sickness! But first...look at all those sick sims! My clinics are totally overwhelmed. The solution to this is obvious, and with Texaco's computer business humming, it can afford it (despite the horrendous budget number it gets lots of money from selling computers). A new state of the art hospital. Tip #5: Use the big hospital, police station, and fire station very sparingly, they are very expensive. Their only use I've found so far are for specialized cities: big hospital for really really polluted cities (high-tech, metals, oil, industry), big police for gambling cities, and big fire stations for big industry cities for those pesky HAZMAT fires. I've also found that with a large police station you can actually police an entire region by sharing the vehicles (this can save you tons of money in your other cities as they won't need police stations of their own!), but this hasn't worked well for me with the big hospital (bug?). Here's a pic of Texaco's now thriving high tech section. The city has 2 processor factories and 6 computer factories! 16,800 crates of processors and 31,200 computers are made each day. I've found that 2 processor factories are more than enough to supply the computer factories with processors. I import plastic and alloy through my shipping port to supply the other materials. You'll likely need to use supply depots initially, and you'll need a few of them at least. Tip #6: Everything hinges on traffic management, your industry will fail, especially high tech, if your trucks can't get around quickly. Any idiot can build a huge population city, but traffic will be terrible, your sims will be pissed at you, your industry will fail, and your commercial won't be profitable. Texaco has also had other problems...here is a monster destroying every single computer and processor factory. Tip #7: Monsters are attracted by garbage, don't place your dump close to critical infrastructure. It could ruin you! That's all for now!- Read More

Database: Nova Porta
Region: Nova Porta Population: 3.4 Million sims Capital: Grand Harbour Government Type: Tricameral Constitutional Monarchy Head of State: Maximus Caesar (previous), Antonius Nero Caesar (heir apparent) Head of Government: Felix Septimus (previous), currently vacant History: Founded about 600 years ago by various settlers; some refugees, some nomads, even a few criminals were in the mix. District 23 was among the first cities to be founded and grew to well over a million sims prior to its disappearance. Eventually, society started organizing itself into houses, most prominent of these was the House of Caesar which currently holds dynastic rule since Nova Porta's founding. Other houses, like the House of Septimus, have hold governmental positions like Senator. After the founding of District 23, some settlers decided to continue exploring and eventually established the various other towns and cities as seen on the map. The House of Caesar has held leadership position in near absolute power since it's founding. Reforms enacted during the year 210 has made the government to adapt democratic measures such as open elections of Senators and other representatives. But recently, Maximus Caesar has been threatening to disband the Senate and both houses of Parliament and has the agenda of restoring the absolute monarchy. Geography: The Sparrow River effectively bisects Nova Porta into Eastern and Western Portions, while the Great Dividing Ridge further divides the region into Northern and Southern Portions, thus creating the 4 Portions. In the middle, Wolf Pass is where all these geographical barriers meet. To the south is where the majority of the cities are, as well as the Great Archipelago of island cities that call the various islands and atolls of the Great Southern Seas home. Climate on these islands can be best described as tropical to subtropical, but it is not uncommon for snow to fall during the winter months. To the north is the southern coast, where most of the region's population resides. The city of District 23 lies at the delta of the Sparrow River and various coastal communities stretch both eastward and westward of the delta. The relative flatness of the coastal plain allows for unhindered lines of transportation and communication across the southern portion. However, when one draws close to the foot hill communities of St. Roch and Foothills, the geography changes from relative flat to hilly and finally the Great Dividing Ridge itself. The Northwestern Portion of Nova Porta is home to the Forsaken Range. This impenetrable mountain range utterly fills up the Northwestern Portion of the region and only very few have ever dared to venture into the Forsaken Range. Fewer still have returned alive to tell of the horrors of the Forsaken Range. However, a hardy few have established a small mining community along the south western edge of the Forsaken Range. The small village of Darkhorse works the Darkhorse mines, extracting iron ore and coal, and is considered the only permanent settlement within the Forsaken Range. Going eastward from the Forsaken Range, the city of San Raquel sits at the headwaters of the Sparrow River where the waters of Lake Sparrow begin their journey to the Southern Sea via the Sparrow River. Slightly younger than District 23, San Raquel is starting to experience its share of growth spurts. To connect the cities of San Raquel and District 23, high speed rail lines, heavy rail, and various roads cross over Wolf Pass and link these two regional powers together. In the Northeastern region, the mountains once again give way to a massive plain. Here lies the breadbasket of the region, the largest of which would be Black Boulders which produces well over a million tons of produce. Everything from choice rib eye steak to military rations to experimental bio fuel plantations are grown right here. Government and Politics: Each city is effectively self governing. However, anything that affects the stability of the region as a whole is discussed in Grand Harbour before the Monarch. The Legislature is comprised of 3 houses: the Senate (upper house), the Parliament (middle house), and the Council (lower house). Only the Senate and Parliament can decide on matters that would affect the entire region, while the Council is made up entirely of each city's elected mayors and is arranged as a courtesy by the Monarch as a way for each of the cities' mayors to interact and settle disputes with each other. Mayors are elected, but in addition to their duties to the city, they are also expected to participate in the biannual Council of Mayors held in the Parliament chambers in Grand Harbour. The Council is not allowed to participate in the passing of laws and can only suggest changes to bills. If the region was bicameral, then the Parliament would function as the lower house. Representation here is based on each city's population, usually to a ratio of 1 member to 200,000 constituents. However, a provision for 1 member for cities with less than 200,000 constituents is allowed. For a bill to pass this house, a majority of "one more than half" is needed. If a confirmation is needed for the bill to become law, the Parliament would need a 2/3's majority vote to ensure the bill's survival. Members are elected for 5 year terms, with no term limits. The Senate is the highest house of Legislature in the whole region. Two senators are elected from each city, with each senator needing Parliamentary approval for confirmation of a senator. Senators are elected for 8 year terms, but after their second term, must take at-least an 8 year hiatus off the political stage before being allowed to run for re-election. For a bill to become law, a 2/3's majority vote is needed. For reasons of tradition, the Monarch usually presides over the Senate during sessions, but can differ this honour to other members of the Legislature, excluding Mayors. The Monarch is the head of state. As such, he or she is expected to both enforce the laws and see that the laws are properly executed. The Monarch may use emergency powers to order martial law either across the region or to a specific area. The Monarch also has a panel of advisers known as the Council of Ministers. Each of these ministers oversees the daily affairs of state from recruiting members of the Imperial Guard to ensuring the safety of the food supply. The Monarch can also fire anyone within the government, be they a clerk or a minister. However, the Senate or the Parliament can challenge the Monarch's firing of any government official. If either house attains a "one more than half" majority vote, the fired official is allowed their old position back with whatever pay during their absence refunded. Judicial powers are delegated to the Capitoline Court in Grand Harbour. 7 judges are appointed by the Monarch and are confirmed by the Senate. As with all Judicial powers, their job is to translate and interpret laws. The Court's main document that stands as the standard of law across the entire region is the Monarch's Charter. The Charter, signed in 210, is considered the pinnacle of the democratization of Nova Porta. If there is a law that conflicts with the Charter, the Court can declare the law in conflict and render it void. Economy Regionally, Nova Portia enjoys a well and diversified economy although it's agricultural sector takes up a large 40% of it's GDP. The heavily industrialized cities of McGath and City of Industry take up 30% of the GDP and primarily focus on the export of heavy industrial equipment, such as mining tools and blast furnaces, although a small yet burgeoning high tech industry is starting to sprout in McGath. The final 30% is split between mining, lumber, and general trade. Transportation The relatively wide Sparrow River provides an important mode of transportation and allows even large ocean going cargo ships to pass though without the need to widen the river and it is deep enough to avoid the need for dredging. Ferries connect the cities of District 23 and San Raquel with each other and to the Great Archipelago. Deeper inland, roads and highways are fairly common as a few highways cross the southern coastal plains and connect District 23 with the rest of the south coast. However, the region also features a heavily developed railway system that consists of light rail, subways, heavy surface rail, and high speed rail. Unfortunately, the Great Archipelago does not have such a well developed railway and tram system and relies primarily on water based transportation to get around, although the islands do get a heavy amount of car and pedestrian traffic. And finally, the region is home to 3 international airports. The Alberto Santos Dumont airport in District 23 is the region's hub for all the major airlines. However, due to the rapid urbanization of District 23, land is scarce and an agreement has been reached with District 23's neighbor, City of Commerce, to build the replacement of the Alberto Santos Dumont airport. Construction is underway, but the megaproject will take a very long time to complete. San Raquel's airport is nearing completion and has yet to be named.- Read More

The Capitol Grows
Georgia: Update #1 City name: Capitol City Population: 5,000 50,000 (Population Goal = 1,000,000) I have been working on Capitol City to make it a better city, a place where Georgia residents can look at and admire. The city has gone through some huge development and is becoming a strong, thriving city for both financial and retail economies Here are a few pictures Capitol City's manufacturing/dirty based industry has been transformed into a high tech industry, as you can seen construction taking place. Moving nearby in the industrial area, the citizens of Capitol City has decided to decommission the Hawthorne Coal Mine & Coal Power Plant The vote (18,950/7,899) has decided to find cheaper, cleaner alternative sources of power. Capitol City has then decided that due to high gust winds off of Capitol Lake, Wind Turbines will make good sources of clean wind energy The Financial District has really taken off in the past ten years, with Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo moving to the capitol. Residents are getting skeptical of the greedy bank operations, and hope that the government regulates them Therefore, the creation of the Georgia Federal Bank Reserve was created/built Near the Financial District is National Park, where the Georgia National Monument has been constructed Citizens of Georgia voted for this style of architecture, as it brings the nation of Georgia a symbol of freedom At Georgia State University, the Georgia Nighthawks Stadium has just opened and the surrounding dorm students are excited for the upcoming football season! Remember the bare interchange of I-45 and I-73? It is now surrounded by commercial and retail districts Lastly, near Georgia State University, Wal-Mart Supercenter has opened a retail store nearby Hosiery Update: Hanson Hosiery Mills has recorded record profits of $250,000,000, placing a huge budget surplus for the city! However, citizens now realize that the potential of a state-owned business could lead to corruption, Therefore, there have been talks of a petition to find a buyer or to split the profits among Capitol City residents. Start off at a small town called nutosia
The city of Nutosia is a small city in the land of Castos Metropole. The meaning of this place is to make it as self-supporting as possible. Situated near a historical coastline of the innersea of Castos Metropole it is a very romantic place to visit. All energy is clean. supported by Wind mails the city creates IT’S OWN ENERGY. It all started off really small and simple. A few houses, filled with young families. Soon there were more demands for things like schools and shops. Police station and fire arms and of course a doctor and some kind of leadership. http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/32/8wsr.jpg/ Right now it’s under a lot of construction. Most industries are pretty dirty but nevertheless very important. http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/607/mxve.jpg/ What you see here is that the low wealth residential are separated from the medium Residential, also there is left over a little spot to produce oxygen for the people.and take away the pollution. http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/541/fwn.png/ What you see here is a little church dedicated to the most important happening in the history of nutosia, even some people say that one of the first Mayans came from this little spots in the woods http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/51/ipk.png/ -

Puerto Sky
Puerto Sky is a big metropolitan city in the simtonic nation know for its large international airport and towering sky scrappers. Its is also one of the cities with the largest park for the sims to enjoy. This is Puerto Sky's International Airport connecting to all major airlines, cities, and nations. The picture below is Terminal 1 and below is main hangers for airplanes to get repaired if they have been damaged during flight. The next two pictures are of Terminal Two, this is the main terminal for Puerto Sky. This terminal is the most busiest for the airport as it handles thousands of flights per day. Towards the right there is a separate section for private jets that only the elite can afford, they are provided with separate entrance and exit from the airport. Two large cargo hangers for cargo planes to ship freight internationally. Top over view of the airport. You can see terminal three on the top which is the last terminal for the airport. Bottom over view of the airport. At the right is Aero Porta, the domestic airport for Puerto Sky. Close up of Aero Porta. The following pictures are close up of the other parts of the city. This is the Financial district. This is Clementa park, the largest park in the cities. This park is ever so lively during the summer with free movie screening and live plays. Close up of the park. This is Poppy flats, a high rising residential area with one of the fastest growing commercial in the city. However, there has been a drastic down turn in the economy and the recession has hit Puerto Sky hard as you can see their are older run down buildings as well as unemployed citizens unable to find jobs. This is Corina, another residential area in the city, this neighborhood has been hit the hardest with the recession as many unemployed citizens live here. This is Flushing Park, the 2nd largest park in the city, you can also see a pedestrian mall towards the bottom of the park. \ This Humpton Estates, a residential neighborhood of upper and middle class citizens. Puerto Sky at night. Building the airport took hours of hard work and patience and it was my first attempt at building a custom airport. Hope you guys like it. Let me know what you think of my city. Feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for viewing.- Read More

First things first...
I will first post images later on, right now I want to do a basis of what I wanna do: 1) Start fresh and with a kick, I hope to get some real input with this new city ( I named it New Region City cause I ran out of good ideas) 2) Try and mix up all the lovely types of buildings to create as realistic of a game as possible 3) Limit the number of mods I have So far, to my knowledge I have the following
A Digger Set,
A No Trucks Barrier Set
a God Terraforming in Mayor Mod...
I dunno if I have NAM or not, I prolly need to reinstall it... Not sure though... Heh
4) I would love to have a single part in the whole region that deals with the following things TransporationUtilties (water, garbage, electric, etc)
I could love as much input as humanly possible and I will login and view this CJ as often as I can =D Next entry will be the introduction of my first location in the WHOLE region =D- Read More

Update 6: A Little Mistake
-'I'll be there in a minute' - I told Figaro and hung the phone down. I picked up the 9 mm from my desk, and took the subway to Hanoi Av. Station. The Feldspar Convention Center is right at the intersection between Reforma Boulevard and Hanoi Avenue. Reinforcements were coming soon, but we had to reach our target before they arrive. -'Alright' - said Figaro - 'we have one chance to do this right. I need you to watch my back.' We climbed the emergency stairs down to the basement, the "meeting point." 'We need to stop them before they even get their hands on the virus. The future of Surep-Guava is looking very uncertain' - when suddenly, Bang!, a briefcase dropped into the ground. We heard the dealers vanish into the thick air. It was getting hard to breathe. 'Quick!' - shouted Figaro, we took the tunnel to the school on the other side of the Avenue, where other policemen were awaiting us and the briefcase, except.... there was no briefcase. - 'Fast! We need to find the dealers.' We drove along Reforma Boulevard to a small backstreet next to the Fashion Studio. It was raining cats and dogs, our team was triangulating the possible location of our suspects, but there wasn't a hint of them in the nearby area. I returned home and called Lucy. I told her what happened, and I told her tomorrow was my dad's funeral. He had been killed trying to stop these... evil-doers from 'exporting' deadly viruses to pacific countries like Alzazibar, or at least, that's what I thought. 'Let's go to Tokyo Center' - said Lucy. It sounded like a great idea. And it was!! Tokyo Center is "the place" for whatever anyone would want to do, from shopping, to bowling, to going to the cinema,or just wandering around and eating food in one of the many restaurants in the area. - 6

Downtown District
Starting out, Brentsville was a small city with an optimistic future. The city by the bay is attracting many people to leave the nearby cities. An undeveloped waterfront poised many questions for the city council members. How would the city develop the waterfront safely without harming the surrounding bay? The booming downtown business sector provided many jobs during tough economic times in surrounding cities. Current population: 6,500 Downtown Brentsville is booming with jobs with some residential districts to the north and west. This is the financial district surrounded by the canals and bay. Easy Access to I-5 takes you to the surounding cities. Here is the busiest intersection in the city. -

The First Phase
In Phase I of Downton's re-planning I decided to stretch an axis across the middle of the city going North-South and another going East-West. At the crossing lies the great University. The North end is capped by the Parliament , the South by the Ministry of Beautification, the East by City Hall, and the West by The Statue of Liberty and the bay. I was tired of looking at a giant grid of high density commercial and residential blocks, so with over 2,000,000 residents in the city I demolished everything south of the University. I experimented with diagonal avenues and had a lot of fun connecting them with roundabouts. It was especially convenient that the Grand Opera House fit perfectly at a diagonal cross hairs (photo). I centered the rest of the official government buildings along the West Branch of the Axis (photo). Unfortunately the photos show the city being well developed after such changes were made but these are the best photos I have of this Phase. -

6 - Up, Up, and Away!
6 - Up, Up, and Away! There's always something interesting to do or to see here in Victoria. I made a special point to get out today and head to the park on Bay Blvd. I'm still living in this little motel. I'm saving a lot, though, and hope to move into an apartment soon. Anyway, I left my room around 10:00 this morning. The city greeted me. Luckily for me, the intracity shuttle depot is right around the corner from my motel. I hopped on the first bus I could and made my way to the commercial district. The bus dropped me off right across the street from Launch Park. Today's National Environmental Awareness Day, and Victoria has a tradition of launching hot air balloons across the bay! When I arrived, they had already lunched the first one. Some of the richer residents of Victoria come up with some wacky ideas for balloons! I hung around as they loaded up (and filled) the next balloon. Eventually, I hopped onto the shuttle again and took it over to the dock. The city was giving special balloon watching tours in Shambleseed Bay. From the water, there's some great views of the balloons and the skyline. I even saw a few jets fly overhead (most likely heading to the airport in Burton Basin). As the balloon launches died down for a lunch break, I took a leisurely stroll down Bay Blvd. ...until next time! - 6

#1 • Midway
Welcome to Kyonghong! Kyonghong is an island just off the eastern coast of Taiwan. It is a major Special Administrative Region under China, founded in the mid-1990's. It is a major cultural center and is known for its dense urban sprawl and commercial centers. We will be visiting the central business district, known as Midway (中途). It is not only the commercial hub for Kyonghong, but also a major residential and hotel district. You will hardly see suburbs in this part of town. You have just seen Commander Point (指挥官点). It was once a major military base, but has since been transformed into a peninsula known for its office towers and hotels. Now, just across the Gōnglù River, is a major residential area. Although still under the Midway district, many residents prefer to separate it and is colloquially known as Cūnshān (村山). -

Horneby & Marienkirchen - The Grid Is Dead
"Just fantastic! Picture 10.6 really shows that the grid is truly dead. " -- riiga Be prepared for more grid-breaking. The next update shows that the grid is not only dead, but it has been burried too! "That must have taken forever to do. It was well worth the effort, great job!" -- NMUSpidey Actually, it didn't take that much time. A few hours maybe, but I've spent longer time on a single city. But still, you've got to remember all the FAR patterns "Awesome Mandel. Loving that picture of the town square with all the people it looks so vibrant and full of life." -- 89James89 The town square is the key feature of this town. That's where I started development. I like how it turned out and with the people on the square, it does look like something is going on there. So, full of life indeed "Its... Back?! 10.6 is superb. I can't believe you've actually managed to break the grid there. Its not even just about diagonals anymore, you've made the roads look like they will go in any direction." -- ROFLyoshi "Wow, I absolutely adore the first picture. That town square is fantastic. I'm also a huge fan of your farmland. The whole city just feels so...real. The lack of a grid really helps sell the idea that this is an old rural town. Really nice job!" -- mb1.0.2 Then my mission was successful: making a convincing old town by breaking the grid. I actually started with a few roads on the edge of the tile and decided to converge them to this town. Therefore it looks like roads go everywhere from this town. I like the spider-web pattern it created "Pic 10.6 = Death to Rectangles" -- Hellken I'm so awesome, even a non-SC4 player is clapping for me "Killin' the Grid!! This is FAR better than I could ever do!" -- TekindusT Grids? Where we go, we don't need grids... "Specamazatastic return entry, GREAT work! " -- ggamgus Specamazatastic? Is that even a real word? "You could say that town is really ( •_•) ( •_•)>⌐■-■ (⌐■_■) FAR out. YEEAAAAHHH!" -- Mama Luigi AW YEAH! "Great return update, the FAR and the town look great" -- Samerton "beautiful." -- Titanicbuff "All those gridless roads, its very impressive! I'm glad you're back doing Schellingen Stadt " -- mystic_destiny "Schellingen-Stadt is back ! Awesome update, I really like the last picture" -- katherman111 "Your road layout is unique. I'll keep a watch on you for now. Great update!!" -- Luiz P. Romanini "How could someone on the NAM team not use curvy and diagonal roads? Very nice city, and nice road layout " -- Alex_1210 "Good to see that Schellingen-Stadt is back!" -- simonvangenderen "Wow an update, and a great one at that! Nice work!" -- Haljackey "Great update! Good use of FAR. " -- RepublicMaster "Very Great Old Town!" -- Hazani Pratama "Fantastic work. Great imagination and realization." -- MilitantRadical Thank you all for your kind replies Today we're going to take a look at two small rural towns, Horneby and Marienkirchen. Located 3 km away from each other, they fit in the same city tile. But most notable is: both towns don't conform to the grid. How? Well, let's find out! We first start with Horneby: It's a small town like you know from everywhere. Low density buildings, one shop, a church and hey, a roundabout. Not that much eh? But look at the layout: almost all roads are diagonal, with a lot of smooth curves in place! And the best part is: it's all dragable! As we zoom out, more and more grid-less things start to appear... Here we have our main rural highway, the Bundesstrasse 17. It's classified as a "Schnellstasse", allowing maximum speeds of 110 km/h and having no at-grade intersections. Both Horneby and Marienkirchen have a parclo interchange with the B17. I just love to build parclos! Now on to Marienkirchen. It's slightly bigger than Horneby, but again, we see a broken grid here too! And to conclude, we get an overview pic of Marienkirchen, showing it in all it's gridlessness... See you next time! Best, Maarten - 14
