  1. This is a question for the mods. I was trying to embed a youtube video in my club's topics section and couldn't get it to work. Youtube videos used to automatically embed just by pasting a link. Is that still how it works? Or is embedding now not allowed?
  2. In 2009, I was obsessed with a series of SimCity 4 videos that went by the name "Wealthy City." The videos were slideshows of the uploader's city, which they named Minneapolis (it didn't bear any resemblance to Minneapolis, Minnesota.) The songs I remember being used in these videos include: Maroon 5 - "Wake Up Call" All-American Rejects - "Move Along" All-American Rejects - "Dirty Little Secret" Alicia Keys - "No One" (a population zero video) Timaland feat. Keri Hilson - "The Way I Are" (a video where the city is shown being destroyed) Nelly Furtado - "Maneater" (a black and white video) If anyone remembers what other songs were used, if any (I believe Natasha Bedingfield - "Love Like This" may have been another,) please tell me... even if you don't have any of the videos. These were my favourite because of the music used and city showcased. These videos haven't been on YouTube for a while, and I need them, as I'm archiving SimCity 4 videos from the 2000s. You can find unarchived links to three of the videos here, on archive.org. The uploader's username was JJOSamsung. Other videos I need: All the ones with Linkin Park songs over them are gone too. The songs I remember are "Bleed It Out" "Faint" and "In Pieces" If you have any of these, please send them to me or post them.
  3. There used to be an old SC4 youtube let's play series that was like 80 - 100+ episodes long where the creator was working on building out a huge region that was mostly on a flat map with only some rivers and ocean exposure. I found that series to be super interesting because he was building out the entire map focusing on production, retail, residental, power, garbage, etc in different cities across the region. I recall he started with a farm town and eventually built up to an industrial town that I believe was called "Dirty Burger". I have been looking for this series for a couple of days now but can't seem to locate it. Do any of you have any idea if it was deleted at some point or who might have made it?
  4. Introducing Network Addon Mod is the new product format of the NAM Team to show the public the new contents of the new NAM versions that are coming out. In these live streams you can see the new features that will be in the new NAM versions as well as interact with the NAM Team. Interaction with the public is essential to understand features most requested by the public or talk to the NAM Team for possible problems. Below is the link to the most recent video NAM 48: https://www.youtube.com/live/K-XH4OvMk4s?si=r3yKTLFdHzahP-kQ Below you can find videos of older versions. Videos shown under this section correspond to content introduced during previous NAM versions, which are considered DEPRECATED once the next version is published. NAM 47: Introduction to Network Addon Mod 47 has not been realized. 5. Toggle off the Unsupported OS message banner in Google Chrome While I use Firefox as my main web browser, the other day I ran into a warning message on one of the computers I use. Chrome has auto updates by default, and so it sneaked its way in as a deliberate addition into the latest update. Basically it makes info text appear at the top, every time one restarts the browser on a system below Windows 10. Like so: There is (thankfully) at least an X close button to the side, however no such "Don't show again" option exists. That's where removing it needs a workaround. My tutorial explains 2 methods of preventing this message showing. The first uses the Windows registry, as a simple policy addition. The second is a command line startup switch. Both of these methods are what Chrome (as of December 2022) allows to prevent the message showing. Unless anything changes from upcoming immediate updates to the Chromium browser engine, upon enforcing the preference it should be respected indefinitely. Now for anyone reading this on a Windows 10 (or newer) system, one might be wondering... Why on earth would anyone in their right mind use an outdated operating system online? That's asking for nothing but troublesome trouble! In response to this viewpoint, I feel it's important to reinforce how running whatever type of operating system is very much a personal decision. Whether old or new, for being in control over which software one wishes to use, and in my view this is no exception with web browsers. For anyone aware of risks, methods can be taken to reduce them which includes browsing the internet inside a sandboxed environment. While it's down to the developers of software for which OS's are supported, I think it's only right that this isn't pestering people to upgrade contrary to their wish. It might be crazy to stick to the likes of Win 7, and maybe it is. Yet for anyone who it makes sense to use the same comfy pair of shoes and realises how to mitigate risks online, that's important to maintain for as long as is viable. So that's what I've taken some time to document in tutorial form. This is intended for those who prefer to remain in control over their choices on their own personal computers. Here is the video: Hopefully this comes in useful for people who happen to search and find this topic. The description (click here to load in full on YouTube) contains some extra info about it all, if interested in the techy details. -CB
  6. A picture is worth a thousand words, and a video is worth a thousand pictures. As much as I like City Journals, I've always enjoyed watching YouTube videos of cities coming together. SC4 cities are living things and I feel like the medium of video does them the most justice. There's been hundreds of SC4 YouTube channels, but I wanted to show off my favorite, as well as showcase channels still uploading content semi-regularly. (No decade-old content here.) If you know any good channels to add to this, please let me know and I'll add it to the list. Active Channels These are channels that have still uploaded SC4 videos in the past year (as of 2022). If you'd like to subscribe to channels that are still posting, check these channels out. saus tartar - Small-medium sized cities with lots of breathing room. Rafael Zeratai - Cities with lots of realistic details. doormysh - Lots of great city timelapses. Wibbs Builds - Curvy cities and a few good tutorials as well. Misk - Gigantic regions. Includes commentary as well if you're into that. Haljackey - @Haljackey's classic skyscraper jungles. If you want to push the RHW to the limit, watch this. redbycarter - Lots of streams on YouTube as well if you're looking to watch live. TheCouncill0r - @TheCouncill0r's channel. A few SC4 videos from a NAM member. Ulisee Wolf - @ulisse's channel Frequent videos and livestreams from a NAM member. Lucario Boricua - @Lucario Boricua's channel. Not much content, but contains some SECRET NAM development. Inactive Channels These are channels that have stopped uploading SC4 videos for whatever reason (as of 2022). You can still find lots of great videos by digging in the archives, though. Rob's Red Hot Spot - Iconic SC4 YouTube channel with commentary. MGB NAM - @MGB's channel. Lots of classic NAM tutorials from a NAM developer. TarkusSC4 - @Tarkus's channel. Lots of NAM content from a iconic Simtropolis member. Strictoaster - Home of one of the greatest SC4 series of all time. Has lots of other good series from similar games as well (e.g. Cities Skylines, OpenTTD). Raymond Lee - @Raymond7cn's channel. Not much content, though. Ganaram Inukshuk - @Ganaram Inukshuk's channel. Some old NAM content. sc4jenx - @xannepan's channel.
  7. Well, for three weeks I have really been getting up to speed since I last played; only creating little training mock ups. New NAM, better understanding of CAM ... little gems like Cori's No Kickouts, Cori's Aura, CB's max tile NYC Map, some unknown modder who coverted one of NAM44's SAM streets from parking texture to parking spots ... etc ... Today, I finally start my build. But first, I want to thank all of you for the tips, explanations, patience, mods, guides, videos, and especially CB/Cori for this most friendly home and the folks at SCDevotion who I do not know. I cannot even imagine I would be playing again if not for all of you. (It is so rare these days to feel at ease to post on forums without immediate fear of being attacked for being an idiot ... and as a genuine idiot, it is even more terrifying! ) BTW, there is a new video out, but I have yet to watch from a well respected content producer (CPP) for CS looking at SC4. I think it will prove interesting.
  8. Quick Tip to get the Open / Save Download Box back in Firefox The other day when updating to Firefox 98.0 there was something I noticed for the download process had been changed. In the release notes it mentioned about changes being made to "optimize" in this regard, which alters the way files are downloaded. Quite frankly I'm getting a bit frustrated at every other Firefox version needing to find a solution to set something back as I'm familiar. So then eager to restore the prior method which I was used to, it led me to finding a simple about:config preference which restores the old download dialog as previously I've known for many years. Then I decided to make a quick video showing this. As follows: Hopefully this might come in handy for anyone else wondering about this too. -CB
  9. How to always use Light Theme in Firefox (AutoConfig Method) The other day when updating Firefox, and I found how there was a new "feature" added. My custom theme which I have as a dark blue style, now led the UI panels to display in dark all the time. I was far from impressed. One example being with the download dialog: (While I'd want this if choosing an all dark theme, it doesn't suit me personally.) So I did some research and had a play around, and then finally figured something out. I found it was possible to lock down about:config settings using something called AutoConfig (which I'd previously never heard of before). More info about it here. This meant the preference for browser.theme.toolbar-theme which I found to be the solution (when set to 1), could be forced at that value. By forcing the preference, it works around the problem. As a result it means Firefox no longer changes it back to reset the value (to 2) even when opening a new window, or restarting the browser entirely. Like so: With the padlock icons indicating those two settings are locked (and the one highlighted being the most important). It sure is frustrating when things like this happen. Researching it seems this is a very common issue for others too for those who've been searching for a solution. So then having found one myself, I had the thought to create a tutorial video about this. That way it might help others too who run into this, or to be inspired for similar such settings which might be worth locking as well. ---------- Then I decided to make a completely complete job at this, so it led to creating a YouTube channel for myself. And so here's the video I've put together in case it might be of use to anyone: I might upload some SC4 or Simtropolis themed things in future, so we'll have to see about that. Most of the initial 50 odd views were from me since I'm too much of a perfectionist re-re-re-editing the description and such. (There's an issue I've had with the description listed chapters being displayed in the video timeline, and still don't appear.) The zip file I've provided in the description of the video, but I might as well attach it here also for good measure: Firefox AutoConfig - Force Setting (browser.theme.toolbar-theme).zip (Tiny 1 Kb file) The steps I've listed in a bundled text file for the process, which is a straightforward copy into 2 different places and restart Firefox. Also see the following post I made on the Mozilla Support Forum for a few more details: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1360389?page=2#answer-1479952 Anyhow, maybe this will prove useful for anyone here or who somehow happens to find this topic. -CB
  10. Announcing a new hybrid tutorial/let's play series on Rob's Red Hot Spot! I recently had the pleasure of making this first episode with @Lucario Boricua, who gave me an excellent tutorial on terraforming. Future videos will follow a similar model and feature prominent members of the SC4 community. I hope these will be fun and informative for beginner and more advanced players!
  11. Hello, We, SimCity 4 players, are underrepresented in the YouTube community. Why does the biggest channel "only" have 2K subs? I wish we can get to 10K and slowly graduating up to 100K (though it doesn't have to be here). So, I'm officially trying to raise 10K subs for my channel. As a thank you, I'll made a video in my channel. So, hit the subscribe button if you wish. Note that this isn't officially endorsed by Simtropolis. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEyU2FY5XPbPFs-rZS3eMvQ For now, there's no video. I wish I can make how-to or CJ videos. But, my SimCity 4 is quite messy right now. So, I might make podcasts with other creators on the field to boost them too. We should be as competitive as Cities: Skylines. Personally, I think I might not get that subscriber amount due to the small size of the interested. But, I hope this gonna work. If it flops, let me know in the replies. Sorry for my words. Thanks.
  12. I started to post this in my Retro's Practice Makes Perfect thread when I realized that I should start a new Topic here in the Off-Topic sub-forum. In the Retro's Practice Makes Perfect thread, I mentioned setting up a YouTube Channel. I'd love to share the video with you, but That Retro Guy is already taken as a YouTube Channel name. I thought that I was so clever when I thought up that name. I tried That Retro Guy . . . That Retro Guy Plays . . . That Retro Guy Plays Retro Games, etc. I even tried using just Retro and Retro Guy. No luck. Hold it! I just had a thought . . . brb Dang! The Retro Guy is also taken. One YouTube video suggested that I use my real-life name as my Channel name . . . No way that's gonna happen! You see, my real-life name is one letter off from a famous actor's name. He passed away in the 1970s, I believe, but when I had my last COVID-19 test and then at my Endoscopy the next day, both nurses mentioned him in reference to my name. Also in my Retro's Practice Makes Perfect thread, I realized that I already had a YouTube Channel (so to speak), but I don't like the name on it. (Embarrassment prevents me from sharing with you what it is). So I decided to start a new thread here in hopes that the Video makers on this Forum would be able to talk me through on how to properly set up my channel. One Video that I watched suggested that I create a brand-new g-mail address just for the Channel. That actually sounds like a good idea. My YouTube Channel will just be me playing old PC games through GoG as well as videos about SimCity4 so I can show everyone what's going on in my Region when I'm having problems. I'm not looking to get monetized or establish a brand or anything like that. I just want to be able to upload videos for you good people to watch. As always, I will be open to honest, constructive criticism in response to my videos. I have already decided to Turn Off Comments on my videos to avoid the Trolls. Everybody can just post their thoughts about the videos here on the SimTropolis forums once I get started. Any thoughts are (as always) greatly appreciated.
  13. Hello, Personally, I have a challenge: hit the 100K subscriber milestone. I want to achieve that goal. Similarly, SC4 community is quite underrated and we want to change the community for the better, I mean consensually better. The problem is if I reach the goal using SimCity 4 (alone), it won't get me that far. So, I'll raise 100K subs thru Simtropolis and in exchange, Simtropolis will be thanked by me in a video. What will I do when I reached that goal? Well, I'll support SC4 YouTubers like Rob, doormysh, and Misk by commenting on their contents and possibly, a collaboration. Also, I'll make a community alongside with Simtropolis. Simtropolis will still be the go to place for serious conversation in long format. But for fun? That's in my community. Don't forget, I'll promote SimCity 4 in other places on YouTube whenever I can as long as my promotion is relevant and beneficial both for the video poster, the OP, the participant, myself, and SC4 community in general. Option two would be raising 100K subs to the official Simtropolis channel. After the goal is reached, the channel will be managed by a team which consists of me and other members who are willing to join. The income of the channel if any is funneled 100% to Simtropolis. So, the only benefit of the members of the team would be the recognition as alumni of the channel if they wish to start their own channel. Option three would be to just accept the reality and doing everything on my own. It doesn't mean I don't need support. I do, but not as dramatic as the first and second option. I would be making videos myself and stuck with slow growth, at least in couple of years. But at least, I'm done the channel completely on my own and doesn't make the community loaded. And the fact of slow growth will change in the future as more and more people immersed themselves into SimCity 4. So in the end, I would be benefitted from my channel. What do you think about this idea? To be honest, I think these are crazy ideas and you might think the same. Opinions are always welcome. Please don't hate me on these ideas. Note that these ideas aren't official yet and not endorsed by Simtropolis (except maybe the 2nd option). If my ideas do become official (which a bit unlikely), I'll make separate topic. As usual, thanks. Edit: I personally support the option three because it doesn't require the community to be loaded. But, opinions are still welcome.
  14. Hello, I have been here for 4 years since 2017. So far, I've been a moderate player, not advanced yet. But, I want to start a YouTube channel. It will be called Defacto, inspired by the default mayor name. The problem is, I don't really know for sure about my topic. So, I made a vote about what topic is you choose. Make sure you make it one. Personally, I choose to make a guide for NAM from start to finish. But, you are allowed to vote as you like. I hope I succeed. Thanks for participation.
  15. I finally got around to making a very simple tutorial to help folks load downloaded regions from Simtropolis into SimCity 4 using SC4Mapper There may be other guides up here, but this is something that my viewers have requested for a long time, so I hope it's relatively clear and useful!
  16. The Southwest gets a regional master plan.

  20. Northeast Ward gets a highway expansion and construction starts on the city's first tramway!

  22. The suburb of Wheatridge develops in Northeast Ward.
  23. Hello, Did you know that Tri Rismaharini, former mayor of Surabaya that recently appointed to be the Indonesia's Minister of Social, actually plays SimCity. Here is the interview with the mayor: (In Indonesian, as usual) She said in 0:42, FYI, she had been in charge of governing Surabaya since 2010 to December 23 this year due to minister appointment. So, she must have played SimCity 4 or SimCity Societies since SC4 also features online gaming, tho only for maps etc, otherwise known as SimCityscape, not true online experience. Personally, she could have played SC4. But, there's no exact info online which version she played. In the show tho, Tukul, the host, gave a tablet to her, so she could have been playing SimCity franchise to this day, specifically BuildIt. The BuildIt presence also amplified by the image shown on the screen behind the show. After that, she told the experience of managing RCI, civics, budgeting, utilities, and landscaping. Speaking of, landscaping, she told the experience how to build lakes, something that can be only done straightforward in BuildIt since 13 if I'm not mistaken doesn't have any terraforming tools aside from road elevation hotkeys and even then, they cause terrain changes indirectly and nondestructively. Or, she could have played SC3000 or 2000. She also told that upgrading a building causes a protest. I don't really know which SC version that doing that. What I really know is if you're really bulldozing the building first and then rezone it then obviously there'll be a risk. In the end, she did a park rearrangement. What do you think? Should ST host an exclusive interview with her? Sorry for my words. Thanks.
  24. Hey guys! This 1 million sim challenge live stream I did yesterday was an absolute blast! More importantly though, it occurred to me that it might be interesting to organize some kind of "speedrun" type competition for various aspects of the game. My settings for this 3-hour run were not necessarily particularly challenging and I was not particularly focussed, but I think there's an incredible potential for this type of format. It would be interesting to come up with comprehensive rules (accepted mods/bugfixes, traffic simulator settings ,etc.) The idea was as follows: -build a region of 1 million in 3 hours with a limited mod setup on Hard mode. Let me know what you think!
