    Many thanks for the kind words about the ship models, my friend! And congratulations on another excellent and meticulously researched chapter of the CJ. As the other readers might imagine, I am of course immensely proud to see my models being displayed and carefully examined in such a flattering way. Dreadnought and I are in frequent exchange about specifics and the small details. Often dozens or even hundreds of hours go into one major ship model. As we previously announced, all those models will be published and available for you to create your own historic maritime scenes in sc4.

    LIGHTER…… A large, flatbottom barge used to load or unload cargo ships. To convey cargo or persons in a “lighter”. That is the simple, straightforward, dictionary definition of a “lighter”. In reality, lighters have a history dating back hundreds of years – at least to the 16th Century. The models depicted in this pack would have been in use any time between 1850 and 1950. Prior to 1850, lighters would have been sail-rigged or could have been towed by a sailing vessel. After 1850, the steam tug came into existence and handling lighters in crowded harbours became much easier. Lighters came in all shapes and sizes and could haul almost any sort of cargo you can imagine. It could be crates of trade goods, barrels of whiskey or salt pork, sacks of flour, timber, bulk grain, or – most commonly – coal. Lighters could be found in every harbour anywhere in the world, and their cheap cost meant they tended to “litter” big harbours like empty boxes in a warehouse. How to use This pack contains .SC4model-files and props as .SC4desc-files. So, by installing this pack nothing will directly appear in your game. You can use the props on your own lots or convert the SC4models into buildings, as you please. Since most props are to be used on water lots and props naturally align with the surface level, they will sink to the sea floor, if you do not stick to the guidelines on how to use props on water lots. Finally you will need to follow the instructions on how to make a lot transparent. You will find the props in any Lot-Editor under the prefix A_1P_h_ Please visit @Dreadnought's CJ to get detailed descriptions and the historical backgrounds to these prop packs. You will see a wonderful display of the results of our long collaboration there and can get a preview of what might be hidden in the coming prop packs or simply get some inspiration for your own harbour!

    @sejr99999 pointed out an error with the files I made. Many thanks for this! This error is now corrected and unfortunately a redownload of the pack is necessary, otherwise you will not see the lighters!

    are you using a noise transformer? I guess the tricky part is getting the shape of the pile right in general... like the slopes and angles it would stop rolling and start piling...

    NAVIGATION AIDS “Navigational Aids” – the maritime variety – are devices, signals, or markers designed to assist a ship in navigating either long distances, congested harbours or rivers, or to avoid dangerous shoals or hazardous objects in the water. The most commonly used devices are lighthouses, a variety of channel buoys, fog signals (bells or sirens), and day beacons – or leading lights / range lights. In one form or another, these devices have been in use for several millennia – certainly since the first man sailed out of sight of land and wished he’d left a fire burning ashore. Among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Colossus Of Rhodes (280 BC) was said to have carried a flaming torch aloft – the first navigational aid – a lighthouse. While that “fabled tale” is doubtful, the Pharos Lighthouse of Alexandria – another Wonder of the Ancient World – was built about the same time (284 BC) and most certainly functioned as a lighthouse for several centuries. To increase the level of authenticity in your SC4 rivers and harbours, we have included: red and green channel marker buoys, small brick lighthouses from the 1880’s used to mark harbour entrances, a more modern iron-framed version, and the much more modern “leading lights” that have been in common use since the 1940’s.     SMS Prinz Heinrich Commissioned 1902 – 8,887 tons – 127m (415 ft) length – speed 20 knots – range 4,580 nautical miles – crew 35 officers, 532 enlisted men – 2x24 cm (9.4 in) guns – 10x 15 cm (5.9 in) guns – 10x 8.8 cm (3.5 in) guns – 4x45 cm (17.7 in) submerged torpedo tubes – armour belt 10 cm (3.9 in) – turret armour 15 cm (5.9 in) – protective armoured deck 5cm (2 in). Prinz Heinrich was an armoured cruiser – the second one commissioned into the Kaiserliche Marine. She was also the forerunner of the battlecruiser – and would eventually evolve into a heavy cruiser between the World Wars. She was named in honour of His Royal Highness, Prince Heinrich of Prussia (brother to Kaiser Wilhelm II) – sometimes referred to as the “father” of the Imperial Navy. She was built at the Imperial Dockyard in Kiel to a design modified from her predecessor, SMS Fürst Bismarck. In an effort to reduce building costs and improve upon Bismarck’s performance characteristics, SMS Prinz Heinrich traded a smaller main battery and somewhat thinner armour for higher speed. In their turn, all future Imperial armoured cruisers would be incremental improvements of her design. Prinz Heinrich preformed active duty with the fleet from 1902 to 1906, when she was withdrawn for service as a training ship. She saw some combat in secondary roles between 1914 and 1916 when she was withdrawn from service for the final time (due to a severe shortage of crewmen in the fleet). She was eventually scrapped in 1920. (More information on this ship can be found in the “CJ” – IMPERIAL DOCKYARDS: CUXHAVEN -- Chapter 4.)     That is a very good point, however when you want to place multiple floating items together only one of them can be the building and the other ones will have to remain props, so they sink to the ocean floor then...unless I am terribly wrong

  14. This tutorial deals with the subject of placing props on water ploppable lots. Summary of the problem Props adapt to the elevation of the surface that they are placed on. If they are placed on a lot that is water compatible, they adapt to the height of the seabed and not the sea level where you might want them to be (floating objects like boats, etc.). The props are sinking to the seabed. The following illustrates this problem: As far as my research went and the community could answer there is no elegant fix in any setting that can change this. If you know of any, I would be thrilled to hear them and I will gladly adjust or delete this tutorial This tutorial offers a simple solution for this problem. A_1P_PropsOnWater_v1.pdf Attempt for solution In order to solve this problem the lot can be placed on an island or shallow that has roughly the elevation of the sea level. After placing the lot with the props at the desired elevation, the ground can be lowered again to give the appeal of a swimming prop. This can however proof very difficult and may need lots of saving and reloading as removing too much of the supporting island may cause the building to be destroyed. It also requires the props to be larger than tile they are placed on, otherwise beach may be visible underneath them. Additionally, depending on the water mod used, the island might still be visible through clear water. NEW: Alternative Solution The method described above did not leave me very satisfied and dampened my excitement to create complex models for the offshore world that would need to be exported and arranged on a lot as several props. In a recent project with a fellow Simtropolis member, we developed a new method to place props easily and reliably at sea level. The approach is rather simple and easy, I did however not find this solution documented anywhere and wanted to share the approach: Working with defined water depths It is as easy as the caption says. Since the elevation of a prop that you can set in lot editor by holding CTRL and using up / down arrow is relative to the elevation of the surface the lot is plopped on, the relative elevation set in lot editor has to match the water depth you are working with. Example I will stick to my wind turbine installation vessel for this example: At first the relative height of all props on the lot towards each other should be defined as wished. After that, all props have to be selected and raised to the “defined” water depth that the lot should be plopped on. For my example I picked a water depth of 30m. As you can see, the props are all raised to the desired water depth in addition to their relative position towards each other: deck at an elevation of 0m and railing at an elevation of 3.4m move to 30m and 33.4m. This approach will look quite odd in lot editor, but do not worry. Once this is done and the lot is saved and converted into a water compatible lot, the digging tools of NAM can be used to create an island at sea level and then dig a hole of 30m and create a nice even seabed at a depth of 30m. The cheat for the terrain query tool (CTRL+X to open cheat window, enter: terrainquery, return) plus the latest NAM 41 digging tools with increments as small as 0.1m can help you with this. (Sea level is 250m for whatever reason…probably to not get into negative numbers) y-value indicates height: Once you created the basin with your pre-defined water depth you should be able to plop your lot with the elevated props in it and they should be hovering directly at the water line! EDIT 16/08/2023 - Further Hints @Dreadnought advised that choosing the water depth depends largely upon the used "water MOD". If the MOD is "opaque" any depth will do -- the more shallow the better. If their water MOD is semi-transparent (like PEG Brigantine) you need to make sure you can just barely see the bottom. Another tip is to make sure your harbour bottoms is absolutely flat to avoid trouble.

Of course I am only listing the main vessels we have in the fleet, there are lots more like auxiliary boats, lighters and barges! I can also announce that @Dreadnought and I will soon start publishing our first prop packs... for those of you interested in historic props be prepared... there are over 400 props
