Yeah, I agree. At first I thought it was the laptop I was using, but when looking at the pictures in this thread, it is rather astounding how much color has been "bled" out of the SC4 Maxis color palette. Which reinforces the idea of making screenshots of your test renders and then cutting and pasting them into screenshots from the game, to see how everything meshes together.

I would desaturate some of the textures just a bit; maybe less than 10%. They are very bold looking compared to a number of other buildings in that screenshot. What is the floor height? My eye keeps wondering if this needs to be slightly scaled down? I am not sure. Also, I would recommend doing something different with the texture of the ground floor glass; right now, it's apparent that it's a picture of a lobby, and when it's lit, it has a sort of "pasted on" look to it. This sort of thing works better with small windows, but when you have huge swaths of glass that are barely interrupted by other architecture, it doesn't look real or right. In reality, a huge lit lobby like that (as seen from above, birds' eye view in SC4 style) you would see a good portion of the floor, and the furniture inside, and not see a single square inch of the lobby ceiling.

I rather enjoyed my History of German Film class ages ago in university. I had watched a number of them growing up, but it was interesting to catch others I hadn't seen before, such as "The Tin Drum," "Aguirre: Wrath of God," and "The Blue Angel." I missed "The Marriage of Maria Braun," but I have never been a Fassbinder fan (outside of his amazing "Berlin Alexanderplatz.") What is your favorite poem?

The Maxis house scaling really bugs me. It makes adding to the custom content pool for residential a bit irksome; but it leads me to wonder - how have other BATters handled it? Have they adhered to the smaller, Maxis "maxim" (so to speak), or have they gone for a more realistic scale that might dwarf the standard in-game fare? How have BSC old guard, et. al., like SimGoober or jmyers2043, scaled their stuff in comparison to Maxis?

Hey, I was told there would be no math on this exam! I like the building - with all the talk of glass, I think that the blue is a delicate balance. Too little and it won't read properly (or at all), too much and it will look like a Smurf. Maxis has some blues and aquas going on in their buildings that really toe the line on "Smurf territory," and color saturation in general is something that we all should really pay attention to in our BATs. Often I find myself doing preview after preview just to get the right color saturation balance so that it's not too bright and vibrant and cartoonish, but not so dead and dull and bland.- 177 Replies

HIGH quality BATs. TWrecks -
I can imagine the brainstorming/idea session where they saw this real-life building..."hey, the top of this building looks really good, but we already have too many 2x2 buildings already pinned to this idea board. Can we take the top and use it for one of our 1x1 buildings?"

Here's a more modern monstrosity. I may add an additional floor - it's looking rather short compared to the others of late.- 1,133 Replies

Looking for some R$ buildings
madhatter106 replied to fdjw88's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
jmyers2043 did a fantastic set of suburban houses in a big pack, available at SC4Devotion. From what I do recall, there were some dependencies, but I think it was all standard BSC fare that we should all have in our plugins folders anyways. -

Twinkle, twinkle, little BAT...
madhatter106 replied to madhatter106's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
My current problem is only being able to get these modeled and textured. I don't want to do the rest, like the nightlights and the queries and the testing... The colors bug me on this. I may desaturate the bricks. Or may make the ground floor a tad lighter, even though I am trying to fight against it, as a lot of these ones I have done of late are similarly color-schemed...- 1,133 Replies

A couple more. I'm having fun with the modeling on these, but when it comes to texturing, sadly I'm finding it to be a bit of a chore. This first one has a midwestern kind of feel. Not sure sure on the rooftop garden on this one. It needs some more benches if I do decide to keep it... I always think dentals make a cornice look classy...(classic-y, perhaps?) It's missing a roof access as well as some little front lobby details - perhaps an awning or two, or some fancy pants light fixtures...- 1,133 Replies

This one is a beauty. It's always great to see new midrises...generic enough to fit into any SC4 cityscape, but with enough character to not be entirely overlooked. Great job. I look forward to the texturing and nightlights.

BAT won't install, says SC4 deluxe version not installed
madhatter106 replied to bmburke1's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
Bombardiere mentioned in a thread within the past week that the GOG version worked fine, with no problems installing BAT, et. al. As one of the shrinking number of BATters that uses little old gmax, it makes me kind of sad. But that's what I get for hanging on to such an antiquated program... -

madhatter106 replied to madhatter106's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
Thanks, all. Sadly I never sit down from the beginning and intentionally design these with a footprint in mind for building families...they just sort of happen. Here's another inspired by a pic in my swipe file - I never in a million years would have come up with this color scheme, but I did like the way this one looked in real life, so here it is through the hazy filter of my mind and gmax... I am not quite sure if the little potted hedges at the front column bases are getting lost because of the black background, or if they're too small...will see when it makes it to the Lot Editor...- 1,133 Replies

^ this also. Toothless and T Wrecks both bring up excellent points, ones which I wish more BATters would heed. Not all nightlights will be the same intensity, nor will they be the same color. Nor will the drapes or blinds be the same, nor will the carpeting or furniture in the individual rooms be the same. There will be warm windows and cool windows and bright windows and dim windows and dark windows and windows with furnishing beyond them and windows looking out from barren rooms. You get the idea; there is variation behind each window, however subtle. This is why I particularly detest nightmaps - they don't provide for this sort of unique variation from room to room, window to window, floor to floor, within a BAT. And, as T Wrecks pointed out, the corner rooms will often have windows on both sides perpendicular to each other. So nightlighting on one should carry over to the other side, especially if you are seeing both sides (albeit the front of one, and the side of the other). Depening on how you are modelling and lighting this, it might be moot.
