  2. Hello, Microsoft might be a trash company and Simtropolitans know it better when they removed support for CD SimCity 4. And I want to at least have a distance with them. But I couldn't right now. So, let me explain. I want to use my Microsoft account again because Office begs me. Fortunately, my laptop is bundled with licensed Office 2021. Unfortunately, I entered my old account. When I entered my account at the time, it asked for my old email. I can't access it. So, I decided to send them request to change it to my first current email. I reset the laptop and magically, the Office was activated. I logged in with my second account, with brand new address, and the Office was still activated. It's fine, until I accidentally remove my DTS software. It's not problematic until one day, the speaker went very loud, without any control to the audio. I reset the laptop again and unfortunately, the Office wasn't activated despite being bundled with the laptop. My hypothesis is linked to my old account. I'm trying to login with my old account, with recently changed email, and I got message of being locked. I entered my current phone number (because you can use any number if you want, it's just for verification as far as I learned from M$ support), and rejected it because it contains "0." In case you don't know, in Indonesia, every number starts with zero. Sure, +62 prefix is there, but not as common domestically as 0xx... As far as I learned from past experience, number zero shouldn't be a problem. Till Microsoft becomes stupid and decided to give up my request. When I tried again, they said, "Try again tomorrow." Like, what?! Can you help me unlock my account? I might need to use Office again in near future. This would be the last time I will buy another Windows computer. I'd buy Librem laptop or Sys76 than this if I have enough money. Thanks. I also have a problem with accessing the login page using my home internet. I don't know which one is slower, home internet or Microsoft. But when I'm using mobile data, it's fine.
  3. I just posted this in a status and it didn't get any attention because it was a status. Microsoft just purchased Activision Blizzard. This has gotten many thinking "What if EA and Ubisoft were to be purchased as well?" In this thread, I'm going to be focusing on EA. SimCity doesn't have a future that makes sense. Could that be changed if EA were to be purchased? Gaming studios are made up of people. All the talented individuals who worked on previous SimCity installments no longer work at EA. What if EA were to be purchased by Microsoft? At what point do regulatory bodies declare such affairs monopolies? What if EA were to be purchased by Amazon? Apple? Sony? Disney? Google? Facebook? Those last two have different names now, but who uses them? Here's my armchair speculation. Topics such as monopolies aren't a concern to me. (I'm starting to reword myself because when I say, "I don't care.", people take it the wrong way and it sounds off-putting. I don't care about most things, or rather, most things aren't a concern to me.) Many here know "Embrace, extend, extinguish." Microsoft has shut down plenty of companies that it has acquired. As far as gaming goes, Microsoft has been no EA. I can't just blindly say that if Microsoft were to purchase EA, then SimCity could see a revival. These franchises don't interest me (It's not that "I don't care" about them! ); however, Banjo-Kazooie and Conker have barely seen anything since Rare's acquisition in 2002 and after many years of teasing, the new Battletoads game didn't make sense. Would Microsoft's cloud-based solution for Microsoft Flight Simulator make sense for SimCity? I had followed flight sim games up until a few months ago. Someone had gotten Google Maps working in Microsoft Flight Simulator. I don't know whether Google has shut that down. You may wish to say that a cloud-based solution is temporary. Microsoft has been putting its games on Steam; however, Microsoft Flight Simulator has its own marketplace for custom content. All the content on it save for a few items is paid. I have seen many say that the flight sim community pays for much of its custom content. An in-game marketplace makes sense instead of Steam Workshop because the game is available for Xbox as well. What are your thoughts? Do you have anything to say about what could happen regarding SimCity if EA were purchased? It doesn't have to be about SimCity. This is the Gaming Talk sub-forum! It also doesn't have to be about Microsoft.
  4. Can I run SC4 on Windows 11?

Currently I have a Windows 10. I bought my first 10 in early 2019 and then a new one in early 2021 after the first one broke down. It was mad slow from the beginning actually, could barely scroll Facebook and Instagram. This second one has worked just fine. It also went just fine running SC4 on both computers (besides speed on the first one), and then transferring all my data from SC4 from the first to the second, after I bought SC4 at GOG in early 2020. Now I've been given the option to install Windows 11 on this computer, all for free. There's only one problem really: Is it possible to run SC4 on Windows 11? Is it possible to transfer current SC4-data (cities, regions, mods etc) and keep running it on Win11? Or will I have to start the whole game over, or even worse, won't I be able to run the game at all? Does anybody know about this? Does anybody have any experience of this? Windows 11 is brand new I know. That's why I'm sceptical that SC4 will work on it, or that anybody has experience of whether it does or not.
  5. Hello, Windows 11 is going to be unveiled on June 24th at 11 am Eastern. Personally, I still love Windows 7 (or even better, Windows 2000) though as the pinnacle of Windows consistency. At least, Windows 8 and 8.1 still separated both Modern Design and Win32 environment, though the completeness (and keyboard & mouse friendliness) of the Modern Design environment was welcomed but there were various factors inhibited the idea. Windows 10 marked the downhill of consistency. But this is just mine, let me know your opinion down below. Hope it helps. Thanks.
  6. This affects Windows 7 through 10 Users A small quote from the article link below "As Microsoft confirms a Google-disclosed and unpatched zero-day vulnerability is being targeted by attackers right now, here’s what you need to know. Microsoft has confirmed that an unpatched ‘zero-day’ vulnerability in the Windows operating system, affecting every version from Windows 7 through to Windows 10, is being actively targeted.... Microsoft failed to issue a security patch within that hugely restrictive timeframe, and Google went ahead and published details of the zero-day vulnerability, which is tracked as CVE-2020-17087.....The bug itself sits within the Windows Kernel Cryptography Driver, known as cng.sys, and could allow an attacker to escalate the privileges they have when accessing a Windows machine. The full technical detail can be found within the Google Project Zero disclosure, but slightly more simply put, it’s a memory buffer-overflow problem that could give an attacker admin-level control of the targeted Windows computer.....How big a threat is this to your average Windows user? That remains to be seen, but currently I’d classify it as a be aware but don’t panic situation." Here is the original article link posted on Nov 1, 2020,08:58am EST by Davey Winder Senior Contributor of Forbes Cybersecurity, https://www.forbes.com/sites/daveywinder/2020/11/01/windows-10-users-beware-new-hacker-attack-confirmed-by-google-microsoft/amp/
  7. Microsoft Flight Simulator

I'm REALLY excited for Microsoft Flight Simulator. All my life, I've been into aviation and I hope to one day obtain a private pilot's certificate. They're doing so many things right. The game is being developed by Asobo Studio in Bordeaux. At the moment, it's the only other game I'm into other than New Cities, Cities: Skylines, and SimCity 4. All my life, fiction has frightened me, so the only games that don't frighten me are ones that "mimic reality." For a game to just "mesh with me," it also takes an active community continuously developing new content for the game. Microsoft Flight Simulator will be sure to have that. In the latest Feature Discovery Series video update, one of the employees of Asobo Studio had talked about how 37,000 airports were manually edited for use in the game and that 80 of the most played and busiest airports were given more attention and what they deemed to be the most iconic airports were given even more special treatment when it came to detail. The next Feature Discovery Series will be released next week. It'll be about Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). As opposed to Visual Flight Rules (VFR) where pilots fly based on their visual surroundings, when pilots fly IFR, they fly based on their instruments. Above the clouds, pilots must fly IFR. No, I'm not in the alpha, but those in the alpha have been saying good things on Reddit and they've been saying them as vaguely as possible. There's an NDA associated with applying for alpha testing.
  8. I have this feature in the control panel but it says "inactive" and anybody who knows how to activate it then? I have the OS Windows 7 Pro and here in the off topic section it's perhaps somebody who knows though this screenshot here is in Swedish it should give a general idea of what i'm talking about. Cheers
  9. Windows 7 - One year to go

Well, as of today, Windows 7 only has one year of support left. After Jan 14, 2020, Windows 7 will no longer receive security updates. So I guess the question is, if you are still on Windows 7, will you move to Windows 10 or stay with an operating system that will continue to become less secure over time. I still use Windows 7 an my laptop that I run SC4 on. After Jan 14, 2020 I plan on keeping Windows 7 on it and either 1) disconnect it from the internet or 2) make frequent backups and take my chances. If you are still using Windows 7, what are your plans after support ends?
  10. The lesson of Microsoft's Tay AI chatbot: Experiments are hard (but worth it) In March 2016, Microsoft launched the Twitter account of its experimental AI chatbot named Tay. Tay is designed to speak like a flippant 19 year old teenager on Twitter and learn from the internet. Unsurprisingly Tay was taken offline by Microsoft after a number of racist humans saw a vulnerability in the AI. Tay had posted a number of unacceptable racist, sexist, and offensive tweets including one where she denied the Holocaust. Business Insider: Microsoft is deleting its AI chatbot's incredibly racist tweets Tecnology Review: Why Microsoft Accidentally Unleashed a Neo-Nazi Bot Did she pass the Turing Test? The Turing test does not directly test whether the computer behaves intelligently. It tests only whether the computer behaves like a human being.
  11. Following the trend of Windows 10, Microsoft has released security update KB3086255 for Windows 7, Windows 8.1 & Windows Vista. Due to "security concerns", this intentionally disables the service which runs the secdrv.sys driver – a component of the SafeDisk protection which SC4 uses. As a result, this prevents the disk-based (CD) version of SimCity 4 from running, and you may receive an "Access Denied - Please login with administrator privileges and try again" or similar permissions error. Many other legacy games are also affected. It would seem the update simply disables the service, rather than removing secdrv.sys completely (like Windows 10 has). NOTE: This shouldn't impact users of a digital based game, such as from GOG or Steam, as these don't rely on the same copy protection. Full details of the update are as follows: Security update for the graphics component in Windows September 8, 2015 (KB3086255) https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/3086255 Workarounds 1) Purchase SC4 digitally Online retailers such as GOG or Steam offer a digital version of SimCity 4 Deluxe. This comes as a download without the need for the CD to start. It's also fully patched and doesn't use the same method of copy protection, so you can install KB3086255 without issue and play the game as normal. In the case of GOG, the game is currently sold DRM free, meaning it starts by itself without a client service (e.g. Steam). During seasonal sales, you can often purchase the game for as little as $5. 2) Redeem your SC4 Serial Number You may be able to redeem your original Serial Number (product key), found at the back at the CD's manual. This may entitle you to a free digital copy of the game, with the same benefits of not needing other workarounds. With Origin you can try contacting customer support, who can usually assist with this. As well as the serial number, you may need to provide physical evidence that you own the boxed copy, such as screenshots of the game's case & disks. Other online retailers may also offer a similar option, so it's best to contact them directly. NOTE: Use at your own risk! The following suggestions will allow SimCity 4 to run, although they could potentially expose your system to security vulnerabilities (which the update intends to bypass). Therefore it's your own responsibility should any issues arise from not installing KB3086255, however the risk level of security flaws being exploited. 3) Uninstall KB3086255 If updates are set to install automatically, you may have this update already installed. In which case, to allow the CD game to start again, without the need for any workarounds, you'll need to uninstall the update: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/24373-windows-update-uninstall-update.html A quick way to check if it's installed: Enter KB3086255 in the "Search Installed Updates" box at the top right. Note: To reduce the risk, it might be worth disconnecting from the internet whilst the game is running. Also it's recommended to ensure your anti-virus has the latest protection definitions. 4) Hide KB3086255 If you haven't installed KB3086255, it might be worth hiding it from the list of updates: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/24376-windows-update-hide-restore-hidden-updates.html 5) Enable secdrv.sys on demand However if you wish to retain the update, the below instructions (from the knowledge base article) describe how to start the service on demand, which should allow SC4 to run from the CD when you require: Using a script Alternatively, see the following Reddit post for a way to start the service using a batch file: https://www.reddit.com/r/simcity4/comments/3kmfmi/quick_and_dirty_solution_to_recent_windows_update/ List of systems the update is offered to: Feel free to post any comments, questions or suggestions below.
  12. Taking a page from other software distributors. With the release of Windows 10, Microsoft is ending the packaging of the operating system on a periodic basis and going to a system that simply updates the platform on an ongoing basis. This is similar to what Ubuntu users get, for example, as on-going updates come in over the Internet. Major version changes occur in Ubuntu, for example, every six months, but there is no "sea change" in the way it operates. This system will provide much more immediacy as user needs and hardware advances make new or revised packages necessary. Instead of a whole release, which is not supposed to ever happen, users will simply receive updates. The article is silent about whether there will be an ongoing charge for this service, but if they are smart, Microsoft will not charge single end users who do not have a corporate license.
  13. http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2015/03/17/microsoft-to-axe-internet-explorer/?intcmp=latestnews Microsoft is working on a new browser for Windows 10, but thank God they're dropping IE.
  14. Azure has a red face. One should not guarantee 99.9% uptime if the software is buggy, eh? This reminds me of the good old service bureau days when time-sharing services first came out. Instead of having your own processor on your desk, you had a terminal and everything was on the server/mainframe at the end of the phone line. Didn't take much of a hiccup to put a service like this down.
  15. MS Invents first holodeck.

It's a start. Science fiction is becoming science fact. All that needs to be added are holographic images and some kind of solidification for them.
  16. This is the note Notch posted today regarding the sale of Mojang AB to Microsoft. Microsoft has bought his company for $2.5 Billion! http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-09-15-microsoft-buys-mojang-and-minecraft
  17. Rise of the Tomb Raider for XB1

Microsoft and Square Enix recently announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider is going to come out exclusively for the Xbox One. Does it bother you? Do you think it is a smart decision? Will it hurt the Tomb Raider franchise? What do you think about Darrell Gallagher's rational for this move? Update: Rise of the Tomb Raider is actually only a timed exclusive, but my questions still stand.
  18. Cloud Surveillance

MS tags porn user. While I would never do this kind of thing, I also will not use anyone else's storage. It is probably worse than using somebody else's e-mail client. Good heavens! The privacy implications are staggering.
  19. http://money.cnn.com/2014/07/17/technology/enterprise/microsoft-job-cuts/index.html Seems that Microsoft is falling apart...
  20. Deficiency in IE. Well, folks, pick your browser. Anything but IE.
  21. Microsoft Buys NOKIA.

The hunt for a new CEO. Pops up a new candidate.
  22. Steve Ballmer retires. After a successor is found, but within a year. Even CEO's get tired.
  23. An administrative error? Hah! The surprising thing is that the U.S. Commerce Department and our Competition Bureau have not got on this bandwagon. I guess the alternate browser people on this continent don't care, but they have this nice international precedent now. I don't think it is the first time MS got in trouble over this issue. How nice would such a juicy fine look in the general revenue of both the U.S. and Canada. Not a lot of money, but every little bit helps.
  24. Hi, I was just wondering if anyone knew if SimCity will run on Windows 8? I've checked the system requirements over at: http://www.simcity.c..._GB/buy/simcity but no luck. I also tried EA's help forums but no result either. Thanks in advance, hf123
