City-building game(s)

  1. I am on a PC running Windows 11. I did a Windows update and now I can not load SC4. I load through the EA app. I have reloaded SC4 Deluxe Edition with no luck at fixing the problem. SC4 starts to load but in a matter of seconds it crashes back to the EA app. Could someone tell me where I can find a solution to this situation? Thanks
  2. I have been playing SimCity4 on window 11. I play it on a pretty wide screen. For months, the image of the game has been reduced to fit the screen perfectly (with an empty black space on the right and left). Recently, I updated the computer, and the image of the game is now stretched from left to right. How do I fix this problem? I need a step-by-step approach to fix this problem otherwise my game does not look right.
  3. Can I run SC4 on Windows 11?

Currently I have a Windows 10. I bought my first 10 in early 2019 and then a new one in early 2021 after the first one broke down. It was mad slow from the beginning actually, could barely scroll Facebook and Instagram. This second one has worked just fine. It also went just fine running SC4 on both computers (besides speed on the first one), and then transferring all my data from SC4 from the first to the second, after I bought SC4 at GOG in early 2020. Now I've been given the option to install Windows 11 on this computer, all for free. There's only one problem really: Is it possible to run SC4 on Windows 11? Is it possible to transfer current SC4-data (cities, regions, mods etc) and keep running it on Win11? Or will I have to start the whole game over, or even worse, won't I be able to run the game at all? Does anybody know about this? Does anybody have any experience of this? Windows 11 is brand new I know. That's why I'm sceptical that SC4 will work on it, or that anybody has experience of whether it does or not.
  4. As I'm sure a lot of you have heard, Microsoft have announced (well, after it was leaked on the web first), that Windows 11 will be released this year. Using Windows 10, no problem, you'll get a free upgrade like with Windows 10, except there is a potential problem. One of the new requirements for Windows 11 is that your system must have a TPM or Trusted Platform Module (v2.0) installed to run it. A TPM is essentially another level of security, that deals with encryption and verifies your PC is the device it claims to be. What does this mean in real terms, well it's usually a little device that you can plug into your motherboard, for example my 4th Generation Intel/ASUS boards have a socket for this, but did not come with the actual module. Many newer systems, especially laptops will fare better, you may have a TPM module and simply not know you do, if your system was made in the last few years this is especially likely. If that's the case, you may find things just work or you simply need to turn it on in the BIOS of your machine. But what if you don't have a TPM module or you have an older one, i.e. lower than v2.0? In theory that's not a big deal, assuming you have the socket for one, you can purchase a suitable module and fit it into your machine. However, there is a problem that's already becoming clear, no sooner than I went looking for a suitable module for my board, did I find out you simply can't get one. Those who realised this requirement early have bought up all the supply, many manufacturers stopped making them for their older boards and have no intention to restart production. Then as is sadly so typical nowadays the scalpers and scammers are looking to hold people to ransom, who might dislike the idea that their few years old hardware can't run an up-to-date and secure OS. The problem comes because these aren't generally generic parts, so if you have an ASUS motherboard for example, you ideally want/need an ASUS TPM module. But even for a given manufacturer, there are likely to be more than one such module, with different connectors and you will need one specifically compatible with your machine. This adds another element, because many users will be looking for help to determine the part they need. As I mentioned, it seems very unlikely I could buy one for my board, but then I'm still running Windows 7, so for me personally this is a non-issue. I only found myself looking into this after a discussion with a friend who told me his 7th Gen i7 system failed the Upgrade Check from MS, which seemed totally illogical to me. There is some information going around the web, suggesting anything older than an 8th Generation Intel system won't work with Windows 11, but thankfully this is based on a misunderstanding. The official list of supported processors from Microsoft only relates to system builders/vendors, in other words Lenovo for example couldn't sell a 7th Generation machine with Windows 11 pre-installed. The system requirements are still really quite low, I would expect if your system runs Windows 10, there should be no issues running Windows 11, driver availability notwithstanding as always. The issue for many though is that they either don't have a TPM module or they simply have not ever switched it on. So in-short, if you plan to install Windows 11, you'll want to find out if your system has a TPM v2.0 module. If it doesn't, you are going to need to get one and right now scalpers are asking a very silly $150 or so, such price inflation started right after the Win11 announcement. Beware too, others are exploiting something that will be in great demand, to scam you out of your money altogether, with the potential that the part you pay for doesn't actually work as described or worse still using people's desperation to get one to simply take your money. Given the projected demand for these as more and more users stumble across the problem, things are likely to get worse not better in the short term, especially as Windows 11 adoption rates pick up. Pragmatically speaking, whenever a situation like this comes along, it's inevitable that some manufacturer will come along with a solution. It's not like there are thousands of different configurations either, so if demand is in the marketplace, 3rd parties will look to cater to that with reasonably priced non-OEM versions. Of course, few outside of the insiders could have seen this coming, coupled with general worldwide manufacturing and part shortages, it may take a little while for such solutions to be widely available to consumers. My advice would be, don't get caught up in the rush to upgrade, Windows 10 support lasts until 2025, so I would recommend a wait and see approach. There is no scenario where junking a 7th gen Intel system makes any sense, in fact the same applies to much older systems too, these are perfectly fine computers for the most part.
