Toggle off the Unsupported OS message banner in Google Chrome While I use Firefox as my main web browser, the other day I ran into a warning message on one of the computers I use. Chrome has auto updates by default, and so it sneaked its way in as a deliberate addition into the latest update. Basically it makes info text appear at the top, every time one restarts the browser on a system below Windows 10. Like so: There is (thankfully) at least an X close button to the side, however no such "Don't show again" option exists. That's where removing it needs a workaround. My tutorial explains 2 methods of preventing this message showing. The first uses the Windows registry, as a simple policy addition. The second is a command line startup switch. Both of these methods are what Chrome (as of December 2022) allows to prevent the message showing. Unless anything changes from upcoming immediate updates to the Chromium browser engine, upon enforcing the preference it should be respected indefinitely. Now for anyone reading this on a Windows 10 (or newer) system, one might be wondering... Why on earth would anyone in their right mind use an outdated operating system online? That's asking for nothing but troublesome trouble! In response to this viewpoint, I feel it's important to reinforce how running whatever type of operating system is very much a personal decision. Whether old or new, for being in control over which software one wishes to use, and in my view this is no exception with web browsers. For anyone aware of risks, methods can be taken to reduce them which includes browsing the internet inside a sandboxed environment. While it's down to the developers of software for which OS's are supported, I think it's only right that this isn't pestering people to upgrade contrary to their wish. It might be crazy to stick to the likes of Win 7, and maybe it is. Yet for anyone who it makes sense to use the same comfy pair of shoes and realises how to mitigate risks online, that's important to maintain for as long as is viable. So that's what I've taken some time to document in tutorial form. This is intended for those who prefer to remain in control over their choices on their own personal computers. Here is the video: Hopefully this comes in useful for people who happen to search and find this topic. The description (click here to load in full on YouTube) contains some extra info about it all, if interested in the techy details. -CB

DirectX crashes on startup, do I have to use a Wrapper? (Win7, Nvidia RTX)
tavernfly posted a topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
Was feeling nostalgic and purchased SC4 on Steam recently, but I cannot get it to load using DirectX on my system. Game tries to start, screen goes black, and a second later crashes to Desktop. I've tried running the game with OpenGL, and successfully made it to Region View with no issues, leading me to believe the crash is a DirectX problem. (I don't know much about OpenGL, but it can't display the game properly for me once a city tile is loaded. Get extreme game-breaking graphical issues beyond trailing/tearing.) System Info: - Windows 7 Professional - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti (16Gb VRAM, latest drivers) - Intel Core i7-8700K - 32Gb RAM Game Info: - SimCity 4 Deluxe purchased through Steam - NAM 42 with 4GB patch installed - Launch options I'm currently attempting to run the game with: I was going to try following the steps in this post: "How to configure SC4 to work with your new hardware", but it seems NVIDIA GeForce is already on the "Fast card" list in Graphics Rules.sgr (although it's written as "NVidia Geforce," dunno if that's case sensitive) ...and I was unable to find a hex code (like "0x9442") for my GPU under System Information or Properties, to add to the Video Cards.sgr list. At this point, is there anything else I can try besides using a Wrapper? EDIT: Still crashing on startup the same way with DDrawCompat installed (tried multiple versions, installed correctly to the Apps folder)... Also tried trimming down launch options to just -CPUCount:1 and -intro:off... I'm at a loss, at this point. -
I really liked using this program when I had Windows XP, but it does not seem to work with Windows 7. The program loads and such, but the plugin profiles doesn't work anymore.

Well, as of today, Windows 7 only has one year of support left. After Jan 14, 2020, Windows 7 will no longer receive security updates. So I guess the question is, if you are still on Windows 7, will you move to Windows 10 or stay with an operating system that will continue to become less secure over time. I still use Windows 7 an my laptop that I run SC4 on. After Jan 14, 2020 I plan on keeping Windows 7 on it and either 1) disconnect it from the internet or 2) make frequent backups and take my chances. If you are still using Windows 7, what are your plans after support ends?

Seems like there's always someone who gets the bad luck, and every so often, that person tries to make the best of it. Using myself for example: I have played SC4 DE almost addictively since 2004. Since discovering this wonderful brilliant community just a few years ago, I have endeavored to use as much custom content as possible to enhance the gameplay. I spend more time on here than Facebook. As we all know, with the unfortunate effects of advancements in technology, namely compatibility issues, we have to adapt best we can.... With that being said, I was curious and excited to hear of a site that could offer a straight download of the game with no disc needed. Having lost my ability to play this game over 4 months ago (thank you so much Windows Update for screwing up the secdrv.sys) I sought to acquire my own copy. I currently hold two disc copies of DE, one is wearing out and the other is a new back-up. This was before I heard about GOG.com. I had issues registering with GOG because the site wouldn't display properly to register an account. I had to use a tablet. After finally getting that set up and downloading the game, I transfer the setup icon to my computer, double-click to start installing, just to have it tell me that it isn't compatible with my version of Windows and that I need to contact the software publisher..... It's freaking Windows 7, what do you mean 'my version of Windows isn't compatible'????? So I emailed the GOG staff (from the tablet again) to inquire about re-downloading the game in case there was an issue with the download itself, but that was almost 24 hours ago and no response yet. Along with that, I can't even begin to start with the headache of sorting my Plugins folder. I admit I let it go to crap and the 17th level of Dante's Inferno in chaos. Not to mention trying to use the SC4DataNode tool to figure out what the heck I'm missing. It'll be a long process, but I'll eventually have to move or reinstall plugins small chunks at a time, and delete others as I can. 6GB is indeed pushing it. Go ahead and laugh. I have to in any case. If anyone has a funny instance like this and fixed it, I'd love to hear about it. And if you have a layman's terms explanation of how you did it, that is sure welcome too.

A week ago this Saturday I finally had enough of Microsoft and its blasted updates as my computer had pretty much stopped working, I started posting in the "Microsoft continues 'bullish' Windows 10 upgrade tactics" topic here on the forums about ditching Windows 7 and installing Linux Mint, the most relevant posts from the last week I have linked to in this first post. I wish I had done this, really bad mistake letting it go ahead ... I spent about two hours this morning trying to work out what was causing my computer to slow down to the point of being completely useless, anyway after making sure I had backup's of everything I needed including my firefox and thunderbird profiles I was annoyed enough to go here https://www.linuxmint.com/download.php Download and burn to DVD the 64-bit Cinnamon desktop and half an hour later I joined the Linux world, it was surprising easy only problem encountered so far was I selected the wrong keyboard during the install and had to go back later and change to the correct one, copied over my firefox and thunderbird profiles into the default ones and pretty much back to normal apart from a couple of addon's no longer work on Linux. No problems installing Steam and so far have installed Cities in Motion 1 and 2 and Cities Skylines, Banished and SimCity 4 are a different issue as neither of them have Linux versions and in the case of SC4 I was working on a Project for it so it will be interesting to see just how much I can get working again ... I'll post updates on how I'm going with this, anyway new desktop Don't try this at home ... while it will work without mods it fatal errors if you try and include any of your Banished mods and as Colonial Charter is to Banished what the Network Addon Mod is to SC4D I'm going to have to buy the GOG version of Banished if I want mods especially CC. Different story with SC4D found the SimCity 4 folder in my home directory with empty regions and plugins folders copied over my regions and plugins to them from my portable harddrive and as you can see from the attached picture things are looking ok and no brown boxes so far in-game. -catty I will be continuing to post updates in here, documenting my using Linux Mint and if anyone has any questions I'm happy to answer them if I can, starting with a post from @CorinaMarie They are called Snapshots and you can take as many as you like the only limit is how much spare space you have on your hard-drive, so once I've got SC4 and all the other related programs installed then I'll take a snapshot as a backup. @Cyclone Boom had a question about SC4 I'll post an answer on that tomorrow ..... -catty

I use Windows 7 (refuse to update to 10) and after a software update Windows insisted on running, I found some gaps in my desktop. I determined from partial screengrabs of my desktop, I noticed that the shortcut for the SC4 Plug-in Manager had vanished, and I believe that another button to the Lot Editor is gone as well. Nothing else seemed out of place, and the only thing that I can think of is since the Lot Editor manual is still part of the Steam "commonapps" area (and I did reinstall Steam recently, as well as update it when I wanted), those things were wiped (and not just the shortcuts). Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Modding Origin Digital Version of SimCity 4
UndercoverNinja12 posted a topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
I've been having some issues with SimCity 4 lately, notably being that one of my computers was upgraded to Windows 10 and will no longer run SimCity 4 from the CD, and my new laptop for college is 64-bit, not 32-bit (but Windows 7), and I have been unable to get SC4 to work there either. So, I've been forced to use the digital version of SC4 from Origin. That runs fine. My question is, how do I mod the digital version (if it is possible). I use the NAM plus a ton of custom content, and playing vanilla SimCity just doesn't do it for me. Alternatively, if anyone has any tips/ideas for running SC4 from the CD on a 64-bit Windows 7 laptop, I would love to hear them. Thanks in advance! -

If everything goes right, I'll be back to the game! That's right, soon I'll be able to customize the game, play Simcity, build my cities and work on my lotting projects. I think that 2 years of not playing Simcity are way too much. But first, 2 questions: 1) I'm going to use Windows 7. I've never played Simcity on Windows 7, so I want to know if there is something I have to know. 2) I have a physical copy of the game, but I wonder if downloading a legal digital version of it will be a better option. Cross you fingers. Here I come!

I am having a problem with loading simmars on windows 7 (and yes I uninstalled the update that blocks sc4). Simmars won't start, you can see it in the taskbar for a few seconds then it just closes itself. if it makes a difference i am using the steam version of simcity 4.

I'm really sorry if this has been posted some where before but I am very frustrated at the moment. let me explain. I have windows 7 home premium 8GB RAM 64bit intel(r) core(tm) 3.30ghz desktop. I was able to run simcity 4 deluxe a few years ago with no problems, a few days ago I fancied playing it again. nothing happened, I reinstalled it and again nothing. I tried it on my laptop and it has same issues. my cd's are not to blame the game just wont load period. I'm not so computer literate but my urge to play simcity 4 is getting the better of me. please help! thanks.

Howdy! For various reasons I would like to be able to play SC4RH on more than one account on the PC. I have found no problems with the base game being on the two accounts, with one having a ton of add-ons, lots, etc. I wanted to know if there are any of the popular mods/lots/etc that wouldn't be able to be installed on a separate account. One of the reasons is to have two SC4RH installs w/ different configurations (say, one with emphasis on highways and the other with emphasis on railways, etc.) Any warnings would be appreciated! I've come across and interesting problem after upgrading my VM setup to Windows 7 (from Windows XP) that I had never had before. Everything seems to run flawlessly, except the textures for the roadway networks. For example, Zoom 6 before: (Windows XP and WINE) Looks pretty standard, right? Well, now here's Zoom 6 after (Windows 7): Both are the pure vanilla game. It's as if the roadway networks aren't getting anti-aliased or they're rendering in 256 colors or something (avenue-avenue intersections look especially bad) and seems to affect zooms 5 and 6 the most (makes sense since they're basically the same) and 4 to a lesser degree. I've spent some time playing around with Graphics Rules.sgr but haven't found anything yet that fixes it; I'm assuming that is probably the root of the problem. All other textures appear unchanged. Interestingly, I get better results with the stock version of both Graphic Rules.sgr and Video Cards.sgr - when I have them modified to include my video driver, overall performance seems the same but I get the hideous B/W cursors and the in-game Graphics Options doesn't show any "selected" radio buttons - which is perhaps ok but just feels like an issue waiting to happen. Interestingly enough, I also get this degraded performance when I disable hardware acceleration in the VM options - but interestingly enough, the roads look right! In WINE and under a previous version of Parallels running XP, the files significantly improved performance as is expected. Below in the spoiler box is my config log for Windows 7: And the "last good" configuration in WINE: It's something I can easily deal with in light of the overall performance boost even over WINE, but it's definitely something I'd like to fix. I'll keep hacking away at it but I was curious to see if anybody else ever had this problem and figured it out.

I've tried playing SimCity this morning, the first time in a while, but am getting a blue text message floating around the screen with the usual sound playing away. The message reads "Input Not Support" (rather than the grey floaty input not supported grey box I've seen people report elsewhere). I've tried the fix to the input not supported issue, which I found when I googled the message I'm getting, but no luck. Relevant info requested below. Good morning guys, I desperately looked for a subject dealing specifically with the use of SC4 under Windows 7 but all of the results I've found does not answer to my question. I had to change my PC because it was getting old and increasingly rowed with Window XP; I was able to make a custom configuration with Windows 7 by a friend who have good knowledges in hardware to play flight simulation with Flight Simulator X, and I dropped somewhat Sim City 4 .... Does it would be possible to walk again the game under Windows 7 without problems, or where should I need specific modules, and if so which ones? Thanks for your answers

SC4 will not start, only momentarilly in task manager.

Ok, this has been very frustrating, I had installed my disk version of Simcity 4 Deluxe Edition onto my Windows 7 64-bit computer with absolutely no problems. However, when I try to launch the game any way I can, it always crashes just after the process begins. It has happened both on here and my laptop, however I'm more worried about here, on my desktop. Things I have already tried. -Downloadable Simcity 4 Launcher (multiple different settings in it) -Target tags -CPU cores setting to 1 -compatability modes for XP, 98, as well as disabled themes, and running in administrator mode. -restarting the PC -re-installing the game file into Programs Files instead of Program Files (x86) -turning off sound, turning off intro, doing windowed mode and borderless mode, setting 1 CPU core for it, setting to different priorities, setting the resolution at different levels. - updating the game to 1.1.638.0, and then to 1.1.640.0 None of that which I have tried, worked. I would really appreciate it if someone can help me find a solution to this problem, it's very frustrating trying to fix the game, when you can use that time to actually play it. Here are my system specifications: Intel Athlon 64-bit dual core processor 2.31GHz ATI Radeon 4600 series graphics Sound card unknown motherboard ASUS M2N68-AM SE2 -
Hi! I just wanted to start playing SimCity4 Deluxe but it was not starting up anymore. The game was already installed years ago and I played it two months ago too, but today nothing happened when I clicked on the SC4-icon to run the game. Does anybody know how that is possible? Erick

important Windows Update KB3086255 blocks SC4 from starting
Cyclone Boom posted a topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
Following the trend of Windows 10, Microsoft has released security update KB3086255 for Windows 7, Windows 8.1 & Windows Vista. Due to "security concerns", this intentionally disables the service which runs the secdrv.sys driver – a component of the SafeDisk protection which SC4 uses. As a result, this prevents the disk-based (CD) version of SimCity 4 from running, and you may receive an "Access Denied - Please login with administrator privileges and try again" or similar permissions error. Many other legacy games are also affected. It would seem the update simply disables the service, rather than removing secdrv.sys completely (like Windows 10 has). NOTE: This shouldn't impact users of a digital based game, such as from GOG or Steam, as these don't rely on the same copy protection. Full details of the update are as follows: Security update for the graphics component in Windows September 8, 2015 (KB3086255) https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/3086255 Workarounds 1) Purchase SC4 digitally Online retailers such as GOG or Steam offer a digital version of SimCity 4 Deluxe. This comes as a download without the need for the CD to start. It's also fully patched and doesn't use the same method of copy protection, so you can install KB3086255 without issue and play the game as normal. In the case of GOG, the game is currently sold DRM free, meaning it starts by itself without a client service (e.g. Steam). During seasonal sales, you can often purchase the game for as little as $5. 2) Redeem your SC4 Serial Number You may be able to redeem your original Serial Number (product key), found at the back at the CD's manual. This may entitle you to a free digital copy of the game, with the same benefits of not needing other workarounds. With Origin you can try contacting customer support, who can usually assist with this. As well as the serial number, you may need to provide physical evidence that you own the boxed copy, such as screenshots of the game's case & disks. Other online retailers may also offer a similar option, so it's best to contact them directly. NOTE: Use at your own risk! The following suggestions will allow SimCity 4 to run, although they could potentially expose your system to security vulnerabilities (which the update intends to bypass). Therefore it's your own responsibility should any issues arise from not installing KB3086255, however the risk level of security flaws being exploited. 3) Uninstall KB3086255 If updates are set to install automatically, you may have this update already installed. In which case, to allow the CD game to start again, without the need for any workarounds, you'll need to uninstall the update: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/24373-windows-update-uninstall-update.html A quick way to check if it's installed: Enter KB3086255 in the "Search Installed Updates" box at the top right. Note: To reduce the risk, it might be worth disconnecting from the internet whilst the game is running. Also it's recommended to ensure your anti-virus has the latest protection definitions. 4) Hide KB3086255 If you haven't installed KB3086255, it might be worth hiding it from the list of updates: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/24376-windows-update-hide-restore-hidden-updates.html 5) Enable secdrv.sys on demand However if you wish to retain the update, the below instructions (from the knowledge base article) describe how to start the service on demand, which should allow SC4 to run from the CD when you require: Using a script Alternatively, see the following Reddit post for a way to start the service using a batch file: https://www.reddit.com/r/simcity4/comments/3kmfmi/quick_and_dirty_solution_to_recent_windows_update/ List of systems the update is offered to: Feel free to post any comments, questions or suggestions below.- 71 Replies

Please log in with administrator privileges and try again
poshbakerloo posted a topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
"Please log in with administrator privileges and try again" I have been playing SC4 Deluxe on my laptop since I got it in 2008. I've had no problems but suddenly today, out the blue it won't load. At all! I use SC4 Launcher which has the autosave built it and with that nothing happens. If I use the default launcher is get this message: "Please log in with administrator privileges and try again" I am an administrator, nothing has changed and I have no idea why this is suddenly happening! I have Windows 7 Pro 64bit, some updates did install today, maybe thats it? Has anyone else had this problem, and know a way to fix it? I have tried the following: - Started it as an admin - Tried Windows XP compatibility mode - Reinstalled it - Restarted my laptop Note: To keep discussion contained, subsequent posts have been merged with this topic.- 8 Replies

Fixed ALL issues with Windows 7/Intel Graphics Compatibility!
bluemonkey posted a topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
Okay, after much trial and error, and days of searching and putting together bits and pieces of every string I found, here it is: C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /c START "high priority sc4" /high "C:\Program Files (x86)\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe\Apps\SimCity 4.exe" -w -intro:off -d:Software -CPUcount:1 Part 1: The first part (C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /c START "high priority sc4" /high "C:\Program Files (x86)\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe\Apps\SimCity 4.exe") has been floating around the internet for years. I would give credit since its the biggest part, but I have no idea who said it first. Unfortunately, while this string worked great a few years ago, when Intel Core Duos and AMD Athlon IIs were the norm along with Nvidia Geforce cards, its out of date. Why? Because Simcity 4 just doesn't play nice with Intel HD Graphics, which have only gotten near gaming grade in the past few years. Every other guide I've seen tells you how to force SC4 to use your discrete graphics card and avoid the Intel graphics, which it uses by default. However, many people, including me, don't have a discrete card and won't need one for the forseeable future. Part 2: -w is for UAC and notification compatibility. You see, Simcity 4 on "stock" full screen doesn't minimize properly, so when a little bubble pops up in the taskbar saying "updates are available" or "installing new drivers" or "free iPads click here NOW!!!" or whatever, the game is "minimized". But since the game doesn't know how to handle minimizing and maximizing, what has actually just happened is a crash to desktop (CTD). Sure the game is still running, but good luck bringing it back onto the screen. This fixes it by having an "artificial" window. The game is still full screen, but Windows wraps an invisible window around it, so Simcity 4 doesn't have to handle minimizing itself. Warning: DO NOT enable custom resolution! This causes the game to go into a *actual* Window that takes up the full screen, but leaves a Windows frame and the taskbar visible. Panning with the mouse won't work and you can accidentaly resize the Window which MAY crash the game. You might not mind, but I found it an unpleasant experience, and if you do too then 1600x1200 is your maximum resolution if you want full screen. The only way to disable this if you do it is to delete and reset the entire shortcut string. Part 3: -intro:off does exactly what it sounds like it does. When you start the game, all you'll see is a black screen then a Simcity 4 logo before it loads. I know you can skip with the space bar, but why do it when you don't have to? Part 4: -d:software is the part that makes Simcity 4 work with Intel integrated graphics, aka MOST modern computers. You see, Simcity 4 can only use Directx with a (very short) preset list of graphics cards, and while you can add more graphics cards (guide ), Intel integrated doesn't have the information needed to edit those files. Simcity 4 can still use your integrated memory so will still run fast, it just won't be stuck with 3D graphics glitches such as this. There are guides which say that this will cause pixellation issues on the closest zoom, but I don't see their point since this is also true of the stock DirectX mode. There have been many guides saying this issue is due to "memory corruption," and the only solution is reinstalling Simcity 4. They are wrong, and if you don't believe me, try this string. Part 5: -CPUcount:1 limits the game to one processor core. The game doesn't play nice with multiple cores. It USED to work pretty good with early generation Intel Core Duos and AMD Athlon IIs that had no integrated graphics or hyperthreading. However, modern processors with multiple threads per core, or 4+ cores, or integrated graphics will crash the game the moment it moves beyond a single core. However, if you have a slower processor (less than 2.0Ghz with less than 2MB cache), the game might be so slow on one thread that you should just tolerate the CTDs and use an Autosaver. This has been tested in Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and WINE on Ubuntu, Puppy, openSUSE, and Mint Linux. If you use Windows XP, you should check if your processor has integrated graphics or multiple cores, because if it does you'll still need the -d:software and -CPUcount:1. And if you can, install Network Addon Mod. If you don't want it don't use it, but it enables SC4 to use 3-4GB of RAM, which makes it insanely smooth even on maximum graphics settings, so you should at least install it.- 12 Replies
