Perfect, exactly what I was looking for. We even happen to be using the same texture packs, so your screenshot is exactly what it will look like in my game. I would've liked more large tiles, but as a previous commenter said, having smaller ones will keep out all of the technically impressive but ugly RHW projects.

This is a great, realistic region, except for that wide river that ends abruptly in the northwest. The one further south that starts as a small creek in the mountains and joins the main river as a narrow stream looks amazing, but wider rivers almost always look better when they go off the map or empty into the sea. This isn't a negative comment on your terraforming skills, which are great, and certainly far better than mine. Realistic sources for large rivers, that then widen over an appropriate distance, are almost impossible to pull off in SimCity 4. I think I've seen one good example, which was an extremely windy river in a West Virginia region, in my entire decade of playing SimCity 4. Even the most experienced modders working from real satellite maps have tried to model large rivers from start to finish and failed, personally I'd rather it just not be tried anymore.

Maybe el rail is essentially obsolete and not worth working on mods for most people. Elevated GLR and subway have almost completely superceded it, I don't think I've ever seen a CJ that had el rail in it, on closer inspection its almost always GLR with various skins. I still think some city layouts need el rail to look realistic, but it doesn't look like anyone else does, its always GLR or maybe monorail. EDIT: sorry for the quote mess, I'm on my tablet.

Even that's closer to what we have in the USA than the Maxis version. I wonder how they got it so wrong in the first place, its not like they didn't have modern el rail to model from when the game came out in 2003.

The default el rail looks really bad to me. The pillars look like red steel cages full of haybales and/or gravel, and the actual rail beds look like regular rail but elevated, which is completely unrealistic unless its going through West Virginia (the only place where SC4-like rails actually still exist, and most are abandoned). The el networks I've seen in real life (Chicago, Richmond, Washington DC) all have steel or concrete beds, usually painted, and the pillars either look like the NAM's el over road pillars or concave concrete pillars (narrow on the bottom, wide at the top). The SC4 default gravel and wooden el beds haven't existed in real life for about 60 years. Where can I find an el rail skin that look more realistic? I've found an el with parks underneath on SC4D and one with embankments here, but I can't seem to find a reskin of the network itself anywhere. I've found tons of stations, trains, and under-rail shops, but nothing for the rail and pillars.

Is there a mod that shrinks mansions rather than blocking them?
bluemonkey replied to bluemonkey's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Wow, there are like 50 different lots for only ~5 mansion buildings. I've been working on shrinking them since I posted the last comment, and I've only done 10. I'm thinking it would be easier to just keep the mansion blocker and download custom low density r$$$ with smaller lot sizes to replace them, even if it does make my cities take 10 years to load.- 7 Replies

Thank you, the lot editor did the trick. Now I can have my mansions look like those perfect blocks of houston/new york medium density condo buildings with alternating front and back yards, but with mansions- 7 Replies

Most of the map is pretty bland, but that spectacular mountain north of the capital more than makes up for it (I'm not a hunger games fan and know nothing about the books or movie, so if I sound ignorant please forgive me). One question, though: Why is the capital in Utah? Its not the ideal location for a capital, its landlocked, dangerously hot, and there's not really enough water to sustain metro Salt Lake City in the long term, let alone a SciFi megalopolis.

Is there a mod that shrinks mansions rather than blocking them?
bluemonkey posted a topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
I found a mod that prevents mansions from growing here, but I actually like the look of them and would like to just shrink them a bit. The biggest mansion I've seen has been 6x4 tiles, so if removing mansions completely is the only way to stop these monstrosities that ruin my zones and block other buildings, I guess I can tolerate a mansionless city. However, I just want them to be able to exist on normal lots. The normal 2x2 mansion with a 1x2 front lawn (2x3 lot) or maybe a sideyard for my suburbs (3x3 lot) seems reasonable. I'm thinking maybe a mod that limits mansions to something that looks like a 2x3 Hyde Condos lot, but with a mansion instead. Is there a mod that does this? I haven't been able to find one on my own. I know using a Maxis blocker and custom buildings could be a solution, but downloading the 300+ custom lots it would take to get vanilla-like variety and competition seems like too much work, and might increase load times beyond what I can tolerate (my total plugin count, counting NAM as 1 plugin, is 30, and cities already take around 5x the vanilla load time).- 7 Replies

Fixed ALL issues with Windows 7/Intel Graphics Compatibility!
bluemonkey replied to bluemonkey's topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
Sc4 is a 32-bit program. So what are you talking about? FYI, I have SC4 set up in both a 32- and a 64-bit wine prefix and both run the same. I am well aware that Simcity 4 "IS a 32 bit program." What I am saying is that while 32 bit Windows will be emulated, a 32 bit graphics driver won't, and SC4 doesn't like that. I for one (and I'm sure others) would be very interested to know what driver revision you have that works correctly? Also, how on earth did you find it, I can't see any legacy drivers on Intel's website for this. The driver version I have for the Intel HD Graphics 4000 is v8.15.10.2712, released March 27, 2012. I could probably use a newer one, but I figured that this version would be most optimized for Windows 7 and only Windows 7. (I'm sure you could use a newer one; after all, Windows 8, but not 8.1 ran the game w/o graphics issues) Intel used to have these older drivers on their website (the one I have is from August March 2012), but I just went on their website and they seemed to have removed them, which is pretty unfortunate. However, they do have a specific driver for Linux, so I know that that is at least available if I ever decide to upgrade to Windows 10, which, in that case, I might end up doing a dual boot to Ubuntu or something. Good for you, but as he said, they aren't available on the website, and those who upgraded won't have the luxury of rolling back. These instructions are for the vast majority who hit the update button 2 YEARS ago. Custom resolution by itself is obviously great, but it doesn't play nice with -w. As I said, -w is for UAC/notification compatibility, but the game is not *actually* in a window, its still full screen. Windows just thinks it is. Put the two together, however, and you get a*actual* window, taskbar (which can be autohidden but why bother), border and all. Scrolling off the edge of the screen doesn't work either. If this doesn't occur on your particular chipset or you can put up with it then great, but it was too much annoyance for me. And I am well aware of the HD props issue. This is not 2003 anymore, or for that matter 2009 (windows 7). Old drivers might be a workaround, but if you have a new computer with new drivers you can't roll back, you have to make sacrifices to play an 11 going on 12 year old game.- 12 Replies

Don't even try Windows XP compatibility mode. Sure it will put SC4 into 32 bit, but you'll still have incompatible graphics.- 12 Replies
