1. SimCity: 10 Reasons You Should Be Excited

By the time they release anything even remotely in the realm of modding, most people will have moved on. Gamers are more fickle ten years after the initial launch of SC4, they don't want to wait around to change the colors of their buildings or tweak traffic routes. There will be an initial surge or buzz, it will release, and unless they get around to releasing more upgrades and content, it will die a slow and miserable death. But we'll always have Paris.... er, SC4.
2. Twinkle, twinkle, little BAT...

Thanks, all. Here's the building textured with plain old roof junk on it. I don't know, it's lacking something...maybe the prior two buildings had such interesting roofs, this one looks a bit anemic in comparison. It needs some sort of bonus or whatnot. Haven't figured out the roof access yet...maybe that's why it looks nekkid. Stuck at home sick with the flu. I don't even wanna BAT I feel so lousy... :/
3. LivingInThePast's BAT Thread

They are? Damn, I missed them... It is? Damn, I'm really off the map... :/
4. Help with GMAX

I highly recommend you watch these tutorials to give you a sense of all the options in gmax, and to get a feel for the interface and how to maneuver around within the program. I wish I had seen them ages ago, when I was first learning.
5. to simfox (verb): to show totally awesome stuff that never gets released even if it looks at least 85% complete. This can involve total disappearance of the simfoxing person after a while, eliminating all remaining hope for a release permanently at the same time. [Not to be confused with kellydaling, the action of teasing others for months with unreleased items only to release most of them at once when many people have given up hope or are close to doing so. This often involves immediate return to a status not entirely unlike to hibernation, effectively initiating the next kellydaling cycle. Unlike kellydaling, simfoxing is not cycle-based, but of a more linear nature.] So stop simfoxing, Aaron! You have me worried over here. OMG this is funny. Define me next!
6. Za's Non-NYBT Thread

I'd agree - I don't know what it is about the roof (if it's a combination of the details or the textures) but something bugs me about it. I think it might be the deep, rich red/orange color. I'd leech some of the color out of it, it's really zinging. Texturing can be bothersome - sometimes it's a matter of jumping the contrast by 5% or lowering the saturation of mid-tones by a couple hairs, or just adding a touch of blue or whatnot. But persistence usually pays off, and your foundation is solid. Keep up the good work.
7. LivingInThePast's BAT Thread

Why not just release it when it's done? If the phrase which you used (which was "mediocre at best") isn't construed as mean, then no, you didn't make a mean comment. So I'm going to go ahead and say that your roof texture is mediocre at best. Still needs improvement. Improvements which have been elaborated on numerous times prior to me chiming in with my non-mean comment. And if you want to feel burned, just wait, just wait until you release your cut-corner version of this and see a couple of blistering reviews in the comments section of the STEX upload. That sting will be infinitely greater. As to a BAT being done in Sketchup versus gmax (or done in gmax versus Max proper), it's not the tools, it's the output. Sure the tools will help, but they'll only get you so far; Michelangelo could probably create a masterpiece with some scrap paper and a few crayolas, while a monkey probably wouldn't with an expensive set of oil paints. Is this about you finishing something (anything?) or is it about making a good BAT?
8. Twinkle, twinkle, little BAT...

Darknono35, T Wrecks and Gn_leugim - yeah, I never think in terms of European or American, though I must say I don't often end up searching for European influences for my stuff. Either way, I'm glad you enjoy my silly little BATs. I'm still undecided on CO$$ versus CO$$$, I suppose part of it will be dictated by what I'm naming them. We shall see... libelibicus - thank you! Here's a rare case of me going and starting to work up/drop in textures before the BAT modeling is finished. Kids, don't try this at home. I want to find another interesting thing for the roof, like the gardens/lounge spaces on my past two - I'm tired of just doing boring roof junk and HVACs and vents and whatnot. Need to find some interesting tidbits to add to this one to make it sing...plus, I'm tempted to BAT one of these with a fancy pants ground floor restaurant fronting it, with chic outdoor dining/tables in the front at one side or another...

Aaron Graham and Darknono35 - thanks for catching the "wide door" - I had been pushing and pulling a whole bunch of selected objects, and not realized that the door had gotten out of control. Fixed now, thanks for those eyes which caught what I had totally overlooked. Sgt Pepper and mattb325 - indeed, often I find that in the last twenty minutes of working on a BAT, when you load those little details in, that is the moment when the BAT begins to really shine or sing. The temptation is to go too far overboard with them, or at least that's what I've found...thanks for stopping by. GN_leugim - thanks! corydreinhardt and TWrecks - hope that worked; I haven't had the problem, nor have I heard this issue creeping up before with this upload, so here's hoping the fix worked... Texturing and nightlighting this one. I think some details still need to be tweaked, and I'm tempted to BAT some pretty sculpted hedges in the front, so they're nice and close and snug up next the building and within the existing LODs. These last two are feeling a bit CO$$$ in my estimation. There's been some talk of tilesets in a European city thread in the main forum, and while I don't BAT with a tileset in mind, this one definitely feels Chicago (with the "Chicago windows"), which I added to shake things up a bit from my recent stuff...
12. LivingInThePast's BAT Thread

Because you know what they say about good textures....
13. So let me get this straight...you want to make a Buenos Aires CJ, and you want people to make all the landmarks for you, and the reason you don't BAT them yourself is that you "don't have the time, neither the patience." Well, I'll ask the question - if you don't have the time or the patience, why then would someone else have the time and patience for this project?
14. It's a monster megabank, of course it will charge fees. They just charged me 23.00 for the privilege of reprinting checks for me, incorrectly for that matter... Re: the BAT - I like the details of the rolling doors on the east side. I always like when I catch the side or back of a BAT and I see those little life-like "real" details. The roof texture looks really really dark - perhaps too dark? I don't know, it just seems too dark. I would suggest upping the brightness on it just a hair, but that's me. Also curious as to what the little patios on the north side will look like - is there an entrance to them, or are there just windows? I can't tell, the hedges are obscuring what looks like the door access to them...
15. So you want to build a European city...

If a person downloads something from one of the exchanges and drops it in his plugins folder, he wants that building to grow in his city. If he wants to restrict the tile set, then by all means do so; but that restriction may or may not override the intent for the downloader to have any or all downloads appear. The situation would vary, depending on the building(s) downloaded and the downloader. As for unwanted buildings that don't match a particular tile set, there's two ways of dealing with them on the user end. In-game, the player can use the bulldozer if the "speck of dust offends thine eye," so to speak. Out of the game, the player can remove that download from his plugins folder. If someone is so specific in his tastes as to enable the Euro tileset (or any other for that matter), then he's probably specific enough to begin with to seek out BATs and other mods that enhance and add to it, and will probably go to the trouble of weeding through his plugins folder to eliminate stuff that doesn't fall within those parameters. The same could be said of any player who sees something growing in his cities that he doesn't like, even someone who has clicked "grow all styles at once." Bulldoze or edit the plugins...tile set restricted or no. As for myself, I've never considered sorting my buildings into tilesets, as it's something that doesn't interest me. And besides, it would turn into debates as to whether to add this one to Houston or Euro, or that one to New York or Chicago...debates and discussion which I could care less about. And then what happens when a BAT doesn't fall neatly into one of those four categories? Then what tile set does it end up in? If someone likes the BATs, they're going to download them, and they're going to want to see them in their cities. That they might be restricting their tileset is of no consequence for me...the BAT will grow regardless. It may be "devil may care" as far as modding in some peoples' eyes, but if someone is so fanatical (for lack of a better term) as to want everything to go Euro (or Houston, or Chicago, etc.) then they can feel free to open up the Reader and do tweaks on their end; my files aren't datpacked, so they can use the model file and do their own plug-in managing, etc. It's exactly the same freedom the downloader has when it comes to relotting something to suit their tastes.
16. Hillier Building
The texture is absurd. Where you'll find a slab that size?
The texture isn't absurd. A great many buildings are made from materials that have been cut/grooved in such a manner. Not every building is made from teeny tiny bricks.
17. Ocean View

You really need to open a BAT thread to get some help with the modeling and texturing before you upload.

19. Arthouse Theatre Pack

Version 1.0

8,540 Downloads

Is your home theater library jam-packed with titles from the Criterion Collection? Do you find words like auteur and mise-en-scene creeping into your everyday conversation? Do your friends call you pretentious because you want to catch the Orson Welles film retrospective, rather than the latest Adam Sandler movie? If you're more apt to spend your Friday night reading subtitles from an obscure 1970's documentary about striking coal miners in a small Norwegian town, then these are for you - presenting eight different arthouse movie theatres, guaranteed to quench that thirst for real film. Featured in this download are the following establishments... The Avalon Theatre - showing Fassbinder's Querelle The Bijou Theatre - showing Bergman's The Seventh Seal The Cameo Theatre - showing Fellini's 8 1/2 The Crest Theatre - showing Pasolini's Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom The Kino Theatre - showing Chaplin's The Kid The Metro Theatre - showing Kurosawa's Rashomon The Regent Theatre - showing Hitchcock's Vertigo The Vista Theatre - showing Lynch's Eraserhead Eight different theatres on 1x2 lots, all of which are CS$$ stages 1 and 2, with jobs ranging from 16 to 32. Stats have been compiled and modded in accordance with previous releases, and all are tricked out with nightlights. No downloadable dependencies required - the only necessary file is included in this release (a little custom sound effect added to the queries). And there's a little "readme" file included, with some arthouse movie trivia and other tidbits! So ditch your lame friends and their plebian tastes; who wants to go drinking down at the local sportsbar, when you could catch The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari on the big screen? Enjoy...
20. Twinkle, twinkle, little BAT...

Ion_Cannon - thanks, JBSimio's stuff has been a great inspiration to me for these lately. Though they can't even compare to his - I'm not worthy...! I had done a little modified rooftop garden for one of the first midrise offices I BATted, but tossed it because it didn't seem to work. Found it again, and figured it was worth salvaging; I wanted this one to look like they had installed the little rooftop patio decades after the building was built...it's configured to look like they wedged it into that space because of the HVAC placement (which I need to keep tweaking)... Tweak, tweak, tweak...
21. Twinkle, twinkle, little BAT...

SimCoug - yeah, I have a hard time getting the more old-fashioned, older style buildings to look right - a lot of my midrises have been more modern buildings. Hopefully this pack will have some more old school architecture in it... libellibicus - I had lots of fun figuring out the modeling for the parking garage entrance. I'll probably hate doing the texturing, though, haha. Thanks for your enthusiasm. NBAFAN1 - indeed, it's all about variety...! Sgt Pepper - perhaps I worked for Maxis in a previous life... Gn_leugim, Aaron Graham - thanks! Za - yeah, most of my stuff is small town, so I tend to BAT the stuff I end up seeing or liking. Jack_wilds - thanks! Happy new year to you as well. Some texturing and nightlights and detailing done. This one was inspired by a lot of the Maxis rooftops - I wanted something that would blend in next to them. I think it needs some benches or chairs up top, as well as a nightlight near the entrance. I rather like the direction this one is going...

Sexy STEX upload is sexy.
23. Chase Tower of Indianapolis

Then you should count yourself as incredibly fortunate - not only did your BAT request get fulfilled, but it was created by one of the premier master BATters around. As for lightning striking the same place twice? Who knows...but I wouldn't count on it... And if you find the Chase Tower to be a beautiful building, then what does it matter what some people say about it in a CJ forum? If you like it, and it's in your CJ, then that's what's important...
24. I like the fact that you are varying the ground floor shops with the different color versions of this. Even though they're small, that detail is appreciated by me.
25. Chase Tower of Indianapolis

It's not the thread that prevents requests from ever being fulfilled. It's the fact that requests seldom (if ever) get fulfilled because no one takes requests, despite the best of intentions for the thread. I can't think of a single BATter offhand who has fulfilled a request from that thread in ages - simply because they're working on their own stuff. They are fulfilling their own "self-requests," so they often have no time for other stuff for other people, no matter what they want or what they say. So, it's not the exposure that is preventing the requests - it's that no one does them anymore.
