Update 16 Security December 1859 The New SorGun travelers reached Washington DC in the fall of 1857. Although it was the capital of the United States, it was still very much a swampy dirty mess at that time. Mr. Denenny and Mr. Master didn’t feel much out of place. Earlier in the year the Supreme Court passed the Dred Scott Decision which, in part, caused the panic of 1857. Capital investment in the western territories dried up and the political will to support projects in the west was waning. These events did not deter the New SorGun deligation, and the two gentlemen were able to get appointments in front of President Buchanan’s staff, as well as a few members of congress. Before heading back west, Mr. Master attended to some business in Baltimore, MD (we’ll find out more about that later). The pair made their way back to New SorGun with high hopes – the politicians seemed sympathetic to their cause, and the Army was looking at establishing additional outposts in the western territories anyway. In the Spring of 1858 New SorGun and other frontier towns in the SorGun region were still suffering from the recession. The little town couldn’t escape the bad luck – even the Walker Barn – one of the first built in town, burned down over the winter. But rumors were spreading that good news was headed this way, and the Territorial Governor had just sent a post informing New SorGun of exciting political developments. The town was abuzz with excitement – would the army build a post nearby? – Was the navy assigning a warship to the bay? – The little post office became the most popular spot in town. Finally, news arrived at the end of April, 1858. How could this be? New SorGun was the largest settlement in the area – Porthaven was barley a spec on the map! The citizens felt they had been betrayed by the politicians. It was well known that the founder of Porthaven, Mr. Delin, had close ties to the higher ups in Washington DC and elsewhere. Whether new Army post was chose for strategic reasons, or political favors, we will never know. In any case, a company of Army Engineers first arrived in Porthaven in the early spring of 1859. A survey of the land proved that the high ground near the mouth of the Delin River was a perfect location for the fort. With the help of loggers from Porthaven, clearing of the land began immediately. A steam donkey was leased from Mr. Yarahi’s lumber company in New SorGun in order to expedite the clearing process. An overview… With the land cleared, work began on the barracks… ...and other structures needed to support the soldiers. Shortly after the barracks and support buildings were complete, work on the main fort commenced. (click for full size) The abundance of tall pines ensured that construction moved ahead quickly. As the fall of 1859 arrived, construction was nearly complete. The army hired extra workers from Porthaven in order to ensure that the fort was completed by winter. The finishing touches were added, and the Army wrapped up construction before the first snowfall. Here is a look at the progression of the fort’s construction at a distance. (animation) Here is another animation with a little more detail. (animation) As the year 1859 was nearing its end, the new decade was full of promise for the town of Porthaven. Mr. Delin’s dreams looked brighter than ever – but what would become of New SorGun? Stay tuned… Replies to the last Teaser Mithrik: Interesting, hope those are good news. Good and bad, I suppose... dubaidude303: Humm. What's the news? It's a Fort grstudios: Looking forward to that next post! Hope you liked it. Mastof: Its not raining, so its probably a good day And it does rain there a lot - but I have no photoshop skills for that Markus J: I like it, really strong feel of the old settlements Thanks! Helsinki 2: yay I was getting worried for New Sorgun then The worry isn't over yet... Simul8ter8: Wow! the town is really looking great! Thanks!

Seems to me the always on connection to play gives some control back to EA, which seems to be lost with SC4. EA sees dollars lost and perhaps don't want to see that happen again. They are setting SC5 up for CONTROL. Control of play and control of mods and new material. I have played SC since SC2 more hours than is decent to admit to but as it stands now I will not be buying the new version. What I've seen looks out of scale, not even as realistic as SC4 looks. To me it appears more "Disney" looking which I dislike since I'm not a child nor looking for a cartoon. As for the required internet connection, which I don't like, that alone stops me even if I liked the new stuff I've seen. I live in a rural area and my choices are dial-up or satellite. I have satellite but have strict download limits and MMO's don't work, and if they do only for a few minutes before one's download allotment is used up and connection is cut to dial-up speeds or less for twenty-four hours. (EA, we don't all live in a metropolisis.) With satellite when a storm comes up or heavy snow, connection is lost and one would be unable to play then which is a perfect time to play since TV is on satellite as well and also out. I guess one could always sit and twiddle their thumbs like in the old days huh? EA doesn't care. Frankly, I wish EVERYONE would boycott this game until EA does it right. I think this SC5 will just be another Sim City Societies, overhyped and rather quickly simply over. SC4 had a magic about it that kept players over the years but I have yet to see any hint of such in SC5. Hopefully I am wrong. EA can't take my SC4 disk and the great content so many have given, nor can they tell me when or how to play SC4. Thanks to all of you who have created and given so much, I can yet play for years. I'm very disappointed but there are other fine games out there and more in the pipeline. Look around folks and let EA play with themselves because they don't deserve your money after how they have done. You made Sim City great, not EA. Go where you will be appreciated. There are other companies who dream of having such a loyal following.

To me, the fundamental concept that defines the SimCity franchise is the ability to create a city of your vision in the way you want it to be. SC4 allows the player to do this, and is very nonrestrictive in how a player can develop a region/city. With the regional gameplay, players can create a sprawling metropolis or a small farming village, or anything in between. However, with Maxis's focus on the multiplayer/online capability, I feel that this fundamental concept is being taken away from SimCity. Predetermined regional transportation, always-online required gameplay, the lack of Terraforming, and multiplayer all restrict our ability to create and develop our regions and cities in the way we want to. This is why I feel SimCity should be called SimCity and not SC5; I don't think it improves on aspects of SC4 that were good, but needed improvement; I think it is taking a step back in some major areas. IMO, SimCity needs the following: -Offline mode -Terraforming -Control over regional transport -Same fundamental regional gameplay concept of SC4, but with improvements (e.g.: Adjacent city tiles, instead of city tiles being separated) -More transit options than that which has been shown -Full support for modding Unfortunately, most of these will not be included in SimCity; which, for me, makes SimCity SimCity, not SC5. Unrelated: Everyone's wishlist for SC should be posted in thread, and I'm not a mod, but I suggest this thread be merged with the one I mentioned, as they are very similar.

Replies: hahei "Alien bugs! Sad to hear about your window, but at least you have plenty of support!" "Aliens indeed! Thank you, yes all the support I revived help make the nightmare pass." " SimCoug "You have a fun story developing here, keep it up " "Thank you, glad you're enjoying it." Simul8ter8 "That huge "rock" in the middle of the road looks sorta like huge alien bug dung... And glad you have enjoyed it that much." I try to get these updates as soon as I can, the hard part is building this "story region" while working on my other region, and dealing with life and college stuff, but here it is! We're going to take a bit of a side track, and see the history of the meritorious Base 5. The following is considered classified information: Base 5 of Nevada has been in charge of extraterrestrial research, from study of captured aliens, to radio communications. Base 5 was originally founded in 1921 as "Federal Prison 5." Because of the heat and the nearest town being Ash Burn, it became named "Hells Prison." From 1937 - 1945 'factories' were built, as well as a supply runway. 1945 - 1950 Military Branch 'Green Machine' became stationed, at what became "Base 5" Ash Burn grew, as 'workers' were needed. 1950, project 'Space Needle' was constructed. 1951 'Space Needle' was finished, and the base was completely self sustaining (other than needing power). The first radio transmission was sent October 9th 1951... Hope you enjoyed! As always thank you for rates, comments, and views! I can't believe it, 2,000 views!! Maybe we can get 5 followers?

With every newsflash about sc5 , only really blinded person cant see or understand that this game is gona fail the same way citiesxl did. But what i was wondering is, could maxis ever release sc4 as open source? i meen they have aready abondened the game years ago and look at our strong community, we could do amazing things with , even fix it. If they wouldnt want to do it(which im almost 100% sure) couldnt they atlist let us simtropolis community arrenge a team that could have the possibility to work with it and actually make bug fixes or even add new futures? We have alot of great and profesional people here, and the game is already here it just needs some refreshing and fixing thats all. What do you guys think?

You can't take game art and take it seriously. Look at the cover of SC4, massive skyscrapers next to flat land, and Curley bridges...

and to think some of my wishes were "solid region play", "ability to have your streets numbered and names automatically" and freeways signs would update those numbers as you built your city.......lol what was I thinking Best thing of all "It took us 10 years to finally listen to you guys so we came up with making a glorified Facebook game and also, we can decide when we want to shut down the server so you won't be able to play your game you bought full price. Oh and another thing, because we listened; Modding will be possible! As our core fan base is very important to us WE WILL MOD the game for you and sell it to you as DLC". Thanks EA.

Show me a single person on the "Simcity Wishlists" thread who asked for no large tiles, no density zoning, no control over region connections, or forced online play and I'll grant you that Maxis is listening to its "core base."

MamaLuigi945: Stunning nature. 5/5 Go T.R.E.E.S.! Thanks MamaLuigi! dubaidude303:Looks like my grandparents woods and river!!!, except for the dump trucks and pit lol, Looks amazing!! Go TREES! I appreciate it dude. westy177: mmp epicness awesome job and just a question does ionica get a lot of plane crashes lol Thanks, not all the way epicness just yet but I'm working my way up and learning the tricks of the mmp trade but I don't think I'll be as skilled as paeng or SimCoug any time soon. There have been a few airline crashes but we have great air-traffic control. hahei:Save the forests! Does Ionica have any floating cities it can build above the forest? Nah, we're not that advanced. Fox: Awesome forest pictures.. very pretty. That is one decent city in that regional view... wow .. it is huge. Thanks Fox, that region view is a bit old, I moved most of my city onto a new region recently but that move cost me 20 to 30% of the region so I'm building it back up even better now. dabadon5: OMG save the trees! Sorry, we need to dig out that unobtanium. Simul8ter8: Trees, Trees, GOOOO TREES!!! I love the little bit of Fantasy look to the update! Thanks Simul8ter8, tried out something different for a change. SimCoug: Great nature! I like how you blended the mine in with the trees - and any update with George Carlin is worthy of 5 stars IMHO. lol, glad you recognize the Carlin! I've been very inspired by things I've seen in your CJ so I'm trying out some MMPs, working on integrating some more nature into my city. Updates Over the past couple of weeks I've been experimenting with canals and MMPs. I recently realized that I didn't haven paeng's freewaters properly installed but I rectified the problem and am on my way to designing some epic ponds. i haven't had a chance to continue the airport, but I've got a few things going that I want to finish first. Veritas - Population 880,000 If Avalon were the heart of Ionica, Veritas would be the brain. It is the largest hub of high finance and government in Ionica. While the congress and the Residence/Office of the President are in Avalon the rest of the government operates out of Veritas. As many know, Veritas gets its name from the Latin word for truth and it was supposed to be a reminder that the foundation of business and government should be honesty. However, when dissatisfied with government citizens of Ionica will often refer to Veritas as Mendacitas which means untruthful or dishonest. There are still quite a few ugly blue RTMT bus stops that I used to use but they are slowly being phased out. I'll detail the functions of some of these buildings next time. Thanks for visiting and commenting.

This is update will cover the eastern city of Uhnung. In native Chinese Mandarin it is called 城市. Uhnung is the nearest major City to many major nations. Due to its close proximity to some of the nation's nearest trade partners and allies (most of the time ), it is the birthplace of a many major trade deals and even a alliances. It also means that Uhnung is influenced by these nations in its architecture etc. In the storm season, Uhnung is one of the worst hit places as it is hit by the Chelibi rains (Cherry Rains). This torrential rain also hits the nearby nations. The Chelibi rains usually start in April and end in June. Uhnung also experiences alot of rain in the other months of year due to it being surrounded by the Sea on all but one side. This is why Uhnung is nicknamed the City of Rain ( 雨城市 ). Now here are some pics from your recent Day trip Uhnung- Exploring the Suburbs in the late Morning Sun It starts to rain as you pass through the government owned pre-fab apartments. It doesn't get any better whilst you view the traditional temple The rain starts to come down as you pass through the outer areas of the city It brightens up as you find the edge of the miles of rice paddies As you admire your surrounding the sunset becomes eminent You head back to your hotel but stop and admire a traditional Concert hall first Thats all for today guys, please comment your thoughts

To me, the only thing wrong with SimCity 2013 right now is the no control over intercity connections thing (this is a HUGE HUGE wrong, mind you). While I feel for those who don't have stable internet connections, the online requirement thing isn't really something that affects me, or I'd imagine most people (most games are going in this direction anyways). I don't like the idea about no density zoning and having road size control it, but I'm keeping an open mind until I get more information about this. And I'm also assuming at this stage we'll have terraforming... if there isn't any that will be another HUGE HUGE wrong. What I require from SimCity 2013 is to stop simply removing core features from SC4. Just add or improve. Don't simply remove.

That's because the "normal" gamer out there has an attention span of a three-year old. Thus, they have not the patience nor the creativity to build anything larger than what you see in that picture. That's why Maxis is doing this. As much as some fanboys can't accept, Maxis is still driving to make a profit, and, believe it or not, the folks here on ST are in the sheer minority when it comes to the potential consumer base this game will have.

Lostalim, I wish I could agree with you but then I guess it depends on what one is looking for or expecting from a game. Personally I think SC4 had more things right than wrong and those things should have been kept instead of creating a whole new game that could be any number of other titles available today. As for customization, I don't think EA has any intention of allowing anything like we see with SC4. They want to SELL you something and new content will not be free. Time will tell, and hopefully I can come back and say you were right and I was wrong. I know some people say they should listen to the "fans", but maybe Maxis wants to find a new audience who will appreciate their new direction for the game. I hope they will add new content for years to come, maybe spawn dozens of expansion packs like the Sims 3. All simcitys have had only 1 expansion pack or none at all. EA made Simcity 4 with Maxis... Most of them have had a tool to make custom content; why not continue the tradition? Simcity 2000: SCURK tool Simcity 3000: Building Architect Plus Simcity 4: B.A.T Especially from this interview... He says something about a building editor; that tells me they're continuing the tradition... Jump to 2:14 I know these are just building tools... But these are the reasons I got into the game, not mods that change roads or gameplay. I trust Maxis... Every Simcity they made I have always loved!
Wow, a superb baseball stadium! I especially like the look of the grass pitch, and I can totally imagine that stadium in a suburb. Thise brick arches with the metal bars give it an archaic "Colosseum" touch, too - as if they kept the lions down there. I like it. The only minor aspects I don't like that much are as follows: (A) The open bleachers look a bit too white and... well, bleached out. Gmax is terrible in that respect, you have to compensate for that effect rather strongly. Come to think of it, I don't know about the floodlights - are they painted white, or are they supposed to be unpainted metal? (B) The tops of the round towers on which the floodlight masts are standing are rather clean and featureless. They appear a bit toy-like IMO. Some weathering etc. might help. As I said, these points are no biggies - just thought I'd mention them anyway so you may choose to incorporate them into your next creation (which I hope will come!) if you like.
Thanks for the support, and yeah, I always forget to compensate for what the BAT takes away. Tiny details end up smudged and bleached out. This was sort of a "test" model to see if I could build something like this and have it look game-quality, as far as the main building goes, so soon I'll take on something bigger and better.

Ocean Land started as bedroom community as time went by the city saw a huge demand for commercial development creating a downtown district but with all the boom in the city a lack of services left the city struggling to fix the problems such as good transportation. New demands for residential homes also helped the small town grow to a large city with a booming tourist district home to large hotels, a cruise ship port, a large beach area ,and a new multipurpose arena home of the Water Monster basketball team. The city is divide by 5 parts Downtown/tourist district ,Ocean View, Shopping district, The heights, and the inland port area I hope you enjoy my city pictures are coming soon.

It seems less and less likely I'll be buying this game with each new round of information we get about it. A map editor might be the only way to save the game. This is 100% a deal breaker for me if we can't get a map editor work around.

They don't care about longevity. Forced obsolescence means you'll have to buy the next version. What better way than to tie the game to a server?

I'm trying to keep an open mind but with all of the information that has come out about this game, it is becoming harder and harder. It seems that everytime new information is released, there is more bad news than good. It's gotten to the point where I'm now very concerned about how this game will turn out. It's not any one piece of information that's caused me to think this way, but all of the bad news put together. No offline? Not a move I agree with but not a deal breaker. 2km x 2km cities? Seems very constricting, but I can live with it considering we have regions and I can create a big city out of a bunch of smaller ones. But then it turns out we can't even do that, not really, as we don't have complete control over how those cities would connect with one another. The only thing in this game that has really "wowed" me so far was the glassbox engine when it was first announced. Since then, it's been downhill. No offline, small tiles, no terraforming, no density zoning, no control over region connections... all of these things are adding up. The thing that really gets me is that we've seen this before with CitiesXL. When that game was first announced everyone was tickled pink, the graphics looked beautiful, it had curvy roads, far better traffic simulation than SC4 could hope to have (even with NAM), and so on. But slowly, as more and more details were released, everyone's elation started to fade. No regions, no custom maps, a heavier focus on multiplayer than most wanted, and so on. Eventually it turned out that multiplayer would be pay to play, and I think that was the nail in the coffin for the game. By the time the game was released, what we received was a hollow shell of what was once promised with many features either missing or over simplified, and with a heavy emphasis on features no one ever really wanted. The worst part was that Monte Cristo originally appeared to be listening to their fans and building a game that the fans wanted (sound familiar?). But as development progressed they listened less and less, and by open beta they outright ignored the plethora of feedback they were given, plenty of it constructive. I think CitiesXL could have been a great game if they stuck with what they originally promised (delivering a game that the fans wanted) instead of shoving that MMO nonsense down our throats. I see the same thing happening with this game and it frightens me. True that this game is not travelling down the exact path that CitiesXL did, but their paths are similar enough that from what we have seen so far, it does not appear that Maxis has learned from the mistakes that Monte Cristo made. I think there is still enough time to switch paths and make SC2013 into a great game, and really hope that EA/Maxis begins to listen to all of the negative feedback they've received.

We have no idea whether "this man" (Haljackey) speaks the truth. I'm not so sure about thruths of any kind, but I'm pretty darn sure about my experiences. I've been through two wannabe-SC4 successors and the entire marketing babble, and it was always the same: They don't go out into the communities and gather ideas which then get implemented in the game. They don't invite long-standing communities to critique the game and make changes accordingly. What they do is implement their own ideas (this is hardly surprising, I would do the same) and whatever their mother company predetermines as fundamental strategical orientation (here: go cloud, go multiplayer, go social). Once this is fixed and determined, they go out into the communities to market their game and stir up some buzz - preferably constantly. They will also pamper the communities somewhat ("your opinion is important to us" yada yada) in an attempt to get some buy-in. And when faced with criticism, they will of course try to appease the critics, but don't be fooled into thinking that they will change any fundamental aspects of the game! All this is long since decided and determined. Communication is not the design & conception stage, communication is the marketing & selling stage. In the forums, the result is normally like this: Of course, the long-standing community members and longtime supporters of the franchise realise that they seem to hit a glass wall at some point: You don't get thrown out, you don'rt see open resistance, you just hit an invisible barrier, and all you do is futile and pointless. Needless to say, this creates some frustration. Imagine you see something go to hell (from your point of view), you get the pictures in perfect quality and cinerama format, presented to you with smug smiles and "Yes, we care about you", and you can't do anything but watch. Next step is, all of a sudden the forum is full of users that have never been heard of or seen around the community, and these now tell the appalled members that have constituted this community for many years that they're basically just a bunch of narrow-minded, hysterical jackasses (sometimes dressed up more nicely, sometimes less so). This, quite logically, creates an even more "explosive" atmosphere and stronger opposition because things can get personal on both sides. Solution: Just don't care. They WILL make the game. They will make it the way THEY determine. You are NOT a factor in this equation. Relax. Live your life. Have a beer. Play SC4. Ignore the rest. Once the game is out, you can read some reviews or check out a demo. Whatever happens before is just a pointless huffing and puffing, a merry-go-round that spins faster and faster, but - not surprisingly - won't get you anywhere, no matter how many rounds you go on it..

We do have faith in the community and it's modding capabilities. That isn't the problem, the problem lies in EA's end of the bargain, so to speak. If they do not fulfill modability to our expectations (e.g. lot editor style, no 3D models from scratch) than there really isn't much we can do despite having the knowledge to do more. Besides, even if we are given the same level of modability like we are in SC4 (which is unlikely, since this game is multiplayer and bandwidth is at a premium) all is essentially thrown out the window in a mere years time when EA pulls the plug on the servers.

Ahhh... good find pyandon. That's damning evidence right there that they're actually serious about this idea. I actually couldn't believe it when first hearing it, but now that I've seen that picture... Christ does it look ridiculous.

I really like your latest creations, this make me wonder if you have ever considered doing something not so NY

I totally understand the empty space between the cites in multiplayer, but why the hell can't we have regions in single player like we had back in SC4?

Ahhhh. Beautiful as always. Thanks for another stunning release.

I think we're just gonna have to agree to disagree on that one. I find that by using tools such as cut and slice, large ngons become very easy to model with. I also not a fan of the arbitrary way in which the surface modifier divides things up into quads. Architectural modelling is very 'horizontal and vertical', and I just don't see that coming through in any of the wireframe/ edged face pics you've posted. Say for instance, if you wanted to make those decorative elements you've added to the side purely horizontal (as they'd most likely be in the real world) you would almost certainly need to do some extra work to correct the edges spouting out at bizarre angles. In this situation, it might only be a 10 second fix, but in other situations this sort of stuff can lead to real headaches. The ease of editing to your method is a nice advantage though. I tend to collapse things as I go, just a bad habit really. Not sure if going back and editing the spline (in my method) would have flow-on effects down the stack, but most things I’d want to edit with a piece of geometry like that could probably be done with an edit poly modifier. The biggest advantage to your method, as you say, is the ability to easily select rings. I generally use the front/ top viewports and standard selection tools for that sort of stuff, unless I'm working with an element purely made of quads. But all that's just theory really. If you can both get the results in the render and feel comfortable working in the viewport, then at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter how you get there. Each for their own I guess, whatever works for you. On top of that, different skillsets will inevitably cater to different methods. There’s a million ways to do just about everything in Max, so what you know and the methods you feel comfortable working with are of course going to influence how you do things. Really enjoying this convo btw, you've brought some really interesting ideas/ discussion to this forum!

Okay, wow. I read this: http://www.simcity.c...ws-Maxis-Part-1, and holy crap, from what is stated here, Simcity 2013 sounds, like a repeat of Societies: a disgrace to the city simulation genre. From everything I've read and seen, I am not going to buy this new game. I mean, not being able to control transportation? That's bull crap and Maxis knows it! I think that they are just trying to pull in non-experienced Simcity players who took one look at sc4 and loved it. The trailers really had me going for a while, but now after reading more about it, even the crap answers here:http://www.simcity.c...ws-Maxis-Part-1, I'm not falling for it! Bull crap!

In terms of keeping multiplayer mechanics simple... automated city connections work. However, this limits us players in so many ways. Such a huge trade off... I've been optimistic about this game since the start, but this interview has highlighted one of the worst features in SimCity and it's hard to look past.

That would make sense for the multiplayer, but it shouldn't need to apply to the singleplayer as well. If the above is all true this is an example of multiplayer seriously restricting the freedom you have in singleplayer. And one of the best things about SC4 was the complete freedom you had to do as you pleased, you take that away you're left with a seriously inferior singleplayer experience, glassbox or not.

to just not buy it is not good enough, if we let these developers screw over a franchise, it better be because they wont listen to us, not just because we dont buy it. What if suckers purchase the game and its "successful in sales" but a total POS? Who learns their lesson here? No one learns. The CORE BASE loses because they ignored the majority of the fans. WE ARE THE CORE BASE....we want a single player game mode. If we have to remind them how to make a simcity game then thats a pretty bad sign. Its like a gas station that is being built, but they decide against the core base and sell rice for our cars rather than gas. This is where the industry is heading! The point is not to let a developer run a franchise into the ground. Speak up! Email , petition , interview a Maxis rep, or do whatever it takes. But on topic a black out isnt going to do crap because Maxis doesnt count on the info here to thier needs.

Some very inspiring work here! I've been thinking a lot about studying abroad in Africa and thought i'd attempt something in that style in simcity tonight. This CJ proves to me that its do-able. Very realistic and beautiful style! Well Done

Very nice. I live in Atlanta so it's cool to see the subway in the game. I was wonderin if you could do Baltimore or Miami subway cars?
