Hello all. This is my first City journal. However not my first city. I'm currently working on the fictional city of Roves. An old city Located in the French province of Rhône-Alps just south of Grenoble of the banks of the river Isère. I have not yet fine tuned the city. So forgive me fo not posting many close ups. But I hope you can still enjoy. Lets have a look shall we? -Here you see the city centre. On the left is the city's cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Roves) with in dront of it the city's main street. Located on the far side is the city's historical museum (Musée historique de Roves). Roves is a very old city with a rich history and it was first referenced in 22 BC. During the middle ages Roves grew significantly, in the 11th century when the Counts of Albon chose the neighbouring city of Grenoble as the capital of their territories. When these counts later took the title of "Dauphins", Grenoble became the capital of the State of Dauphiné. In the 1500's, due to Roves's geographical situation, French troops were garrisoned in the city and its region during the Italian Wars. The nobility of the region took part in various battles and in doing so gained an immense prestige. If you want to know more, I suggest you visit that museum someday ;P -Located in the North east of Roves the the town of St. Cirq-la-Popie. A still very medieval appearing town which means it is a big tourist attraction in the region. Notably most of the houses are still inhabited by the descendants of the original families that build those houses. This is also where I started building on the map. -Next we have picture of Roves at night. On the front you can see the brand new football/soccer stadium, finished on October 14th 2010. It was build on a hill south of the city's financial district overlooking most of the city. Behind the stadium is the financial district. This parts of the city is very modern due to the fact that most of the original architecture was destroyed in World War II. On the far left you can see the neighbourhood area of Thury. its a good idea to avoid this neighbourhood. -And here we have the observatory. It was build it the late 70's and is a well respected institution. -Here is a map showing the road layout of the city up to now. Pretty much all the Maine's are done but, there still is work to be done. Recently parts of the E-712 highway have been changed. The highway used to lead around the city but due to problem with neighbourhoods not being able to connect well to the rest of the city, the highway has been tunnelled under most of the city. Also shaving of about 10 minutes of the time it took to get from one side of town to the other. -Next is an overhead view of the city. I highlighted locations of interest. -And finally my layout plan for the expansion of the city. I hope you enjoyed my first post. Please leave a comment. If you have any tips or suggestions, feel free to post those as well. -

Herstingville; All New, All the Better
After the Disaster of 2005, the entire city of Herstingville was obliterated, thankfully, the old mayor died in the disaster and now Herstingville is now under control of the Mafia. They have no idea how to run a city, in a city of now more than 1,200,000, they only have one hospital, with a capacity of 3,000. They have one Police Sation and one Jail, crime isn't on the rise, the few criminals that operate in the city switch hideouts every two to three days, so the Mafia and the Police could not find them. The New City is stronger, better and more desirable. Although it is still a very, very dangerous place, residents are happy, but limited to what they can do. During the day, everyone goes out and has fun shopping, playing tennis, soccer or just driving around town, passing the taller buildings and remembering better times. Although poverty is rampant, most residents make more than 50,000 a year, which is fair gain in Herstingville. Air Pollution is low, even with many industrial buildings. Remember the Divider that seperated Rich and Poor? Well there is a new one that seperates the Poor with the Environmentally Poor. Waste Managment has been taken to new heights with new Black Hole management systems. These were built next to the Old Reichburner House. The Mayor lives and Works among the rich, every night, he comes home to an amazing lightshow. Too bad he is a Mafia Don, he plans a waste displacement program, the good thing is that it will increase the number of these buildings but it will massacre many poor people along the way . - 4

Appendix A (Book I) - by Professory N.Q.Davidson
Initial Essay pertaining to Book I of the Great Tome Of Our Ancestors. Written by Professor N.Q.Davidson of Lektah University, Nue Praadmire. Dated 24th o'Apris, 1569 p.r. It is clear that the first Book of our great tome refers to the world as it was before the Great Evil Times (otherwise known as the Age of Light). Let's break down the book into it's verses and study what they might mean. "Book I - Part 1" Once, many many years ago, the world was a very different place. Wild things were at the mercy of men, and great towers cast shadows across the land and stood as a legacy to the determination and creativity of mankind. The dust of the moon was crushed beneath our feet, and the very Earth trembled as we clawed at it to release her lodes of Gold and Iron. We were masters of our universe, smug in the knowledge that our actions were beyond reproach. Those were the days when men could dream and dreams became real, when magic was commonplace and where no danger was too great to be overcome. How proud man was. How far he had to fall. This passage begins very clearly by telling us that at the time it was written the world was very different, and speaks of the strengths and power of mankind. At that time the most powerful creatures on earth were sharks, alligators, lions, bears, etc. None of the predators we see today were around. Archaeological evidence suggests that all of these creatures were completely at our mercy... in fact many were endangered as part of the great extinctions of that era. The passage also describes how the dust of the moon was crushed beneath our feet, which I believe means that the surface of the moon (which we now know to be a crumbling grey powder covered in craters and utterly uninhabitable) was actually walked on - perhaps even lived on - by mankind. Another interpretation used to be that the moon itself was part of the earth and was some how flung into orbit around us after or during the Great Evil Times, however we now know that the moon is far, far older than even mankind itself. The reference to trembling Earth and lodes of Gold and Iron I believe refers to our prowess at mining. In those times the Earth's riches were still in the ground, and were extracted in huge mining operations... the scars of which can be found around the world. Astounding as it is, it was actually more efficient and less expensive for our Ancestors to extract raw materials from the Earth itself and smelt them into new refined materials than it was to recycle existing materials. The magic and power they had at their disposal must have been truly awe-inspiring, and yet our Ancestors appeared totally without love and direction in the way they yielded their mighty powers. The passage then generalises about our might and superiority, speaking about our powers and magic and our total control over our environment, and observing that all this would change and we were not invulnerable afterall. "Book I, part 2" Men warred. Men delighted in finding ever grander ways of hurting each other and taking what was not theirs to take, and much of mankinds magic was made to this end. Including the Stone in the Tree... great pillars of ash and fire brought forth at the command of Kings and Daemons. But so great was the Stone Tree that men feared it... men who feared nothing feared the death brought by the Stone of Heat and Light, but the magic could not be undone, and more Stone Tree seeds were planted throughout the world, waiting to blossom and kill all who looked upon them. Until the Kings and Daemons themselves began to fear their own creations, and yet still the Stone Tree seeds kept multiplying until none among them knew what to do with them all. And the Kings and the Daemons talked and feared and cried and wailed, wishing the Stone Trees would be gone and begging that it could be so. This entry is a particularly interesting one because it speaks about the actual trigger of the Great Evil Times, but the things it describes are very vague and difficult to understand. It speaks how men were very war-like in those times (despite their incredible achievements and grand society), and that one of the things this war-like tendency lead them to conjure up was something referred to as a Stone Tree, or a Stone In The Tree, and later on a Great Tree of Stone (in a much later book). It is difficult to misinterpret this... it refers to a huge tree made of stone, which grew and blossomed in a very short amount of time (days, hours even?) and from it shone great light, heat, and ash fell from it. It also talks later about the great noise these stone-trees made, and how anyone that looked upon a Stone Tree in full bloom would instantly perish. These Stone Trees must surely have been truly magnificent in their horror. These Stone Trees were under the control of "Kings and Daemons" - who were the shattered rulers of the time. Men of power and influence who controlled individual nations. Presumably the Daemons refer to "bad rulers" or rulers of nations that opposed our own, at that time... the texts are non-specific about this. The texts then speak about how these Stone Trees were so mighty and powerful that they caused great fear even in people that had nothing to fear, and the Trees grew out of control. It doesn't speak about blossoming or blooming or deaths from the Stone Trees, so presumably the seed reference means that only the seeds multiplied by the Stone Trees were never called forth by the "Kings and Daemons" but were used instead as some kind of threat or intimidation device. Eventually they became so out of control and plentiful that the "Kings and Daemons" themselves began to be concerned by it, and seek help in removing this threat device from their world... presumably because of the death and destruction that would happen if they bloomed without the command of the "Kings and Daemons" (men of power / leaders). "Book I, part 3" But many were Men of Magic - the Sierncemen - in the DreamTime, and Kings and Daemons were of power, but the Siencemen were those who dreamed the magic into the hands of the Kings and Daemons. It was the Siencemen who dreamed the Stone Trees, and the Sciencemen who answered the cries of the Kings and Daemons. The Siencemen knew that the power of the Stone Tree was not just its fire, but also its Great Noise. The men of magic decided to use the Stone in the Tree to make a Great Noise to call forth the very heartbeat of the Earth itself and hear the Earth answer the call of the Stone Tree. By doing this they would look into the soul of the Earth and know what lived there. And so almost all of the Stone Tree seeds were gathered and given to the Siencemen, and yet the Kings and Daemons kept some to cause each other fear. And the Siencemen took the Stone Tree seeds to a great southern land of ice and snow and buried them, ready to call them forth at a precise moment and listen to the echo they made on the soul of the Earth. This paragraph refers to the "saviors" that answer the call of the leaders of the world... it refers to this obscure group of men who possess particularly strong Magic of Old as a range of names, including "Men of Magic", "Sierncemen", "Sciencemen", and "Siencemen". We now interpret this as being unsure multiple spelling of the name "Science Men" or "Men of Science" - science being the name the Ancestors used for Magic of Old, at the time. These Men of Science provide the leaders of the world with a solution for all of the yet-to-blossom Stone Tree seeds... they propose that they are used not for their heat and light (and death) but instead for their "great noise" to provoke a response from Earth Herself... using this great noise to look inside the Earth's soul. This has been interpreted a number of ways throughout the ages, but the most prominent interpretation is that the noise of the Stone Trees (a vast number of them, all at once) was used to look deep within the Earth in much the same way as a Grub Mouse taps a log to hear what is inside to hunt its prey, or a bat squeals in the night to see where it is flying. This is a type of sense that mankind doesn't have but which some animals posses, and it is proposed that the Men of Science were able to use this huge noise made by the Stone Trees to see inside the vast caverns of fire and molten metal that exist within the Earth. Why, exactly, is not specified in the Tome, and indeed the entire theory has been questioned in many different ways. Almost all of the Stone Tree seeds were given to the Science Men, but a few were kept by the leaders of the world, so that they retained some of the fear of the threat of controlling them to bloom, by the sound of it. Men of power rarely give it up if they're not forced to. The last verse tells how the Science Men took the Stone Tree seeds and buried them in south pole, which at that time was very cold and icy and uninhabited.- Read More

San Jose: Around Downtown
Hi again! Time for another San Jose update! This is the San Jose Regional Medical Center. It is one of the largest in the country. Built in 1967, it is currently undergoing expansion projects. This is the newest part of the medical center. It is slated for completion in October 2011. Moving north on Enrique Gonzales Blvd, we see the San Jose Center on the right, and the San Jose Convention Center on the left. The parking garage is the E Deck in the downtown city parking system. If we turn right on Culture St, we will pass into the Museum and Arts district, just next to Old Town San Jose. If we look a little to the south, we will see the Mark Jackson Arboretum, named after San Jose's 5th mayor. It is a 20 acre park in the Arts District. Going back to the convention center area, we will see Luchenhagen Field. It is the home to the San Jose Firecrackers in the Pacifica Baseball League. Now lets go to another part of downtown! This is Beacon Hill, home to San Jose's financial scene. Along with the San Jose Stock Exchange (SJSE), large banks like HSBC call this area home. Now lets go toward the Riverfront District. Here, you can find several of San Jose's Hotels, such as the Hilton, Doubletree, Embassy Suites, Westin, and Marriott. San Jose is truly an amazing city, certainly one of my favorites that I've made so far! So tell me what you think! Don't forget to comment and rate. Adam - 17

Update 6, Companies of Quynneth
Welcome back in the Quynneth region. In this update I'd like to showcase some large companies in the region. It's all companies that have had, or will, or will continue to have a heavy influence on the regions development. As some of you know, I'm trying to develop the region according to the natural growth principle, where I interpret natural growth on several levels and in several ways. Meaning I want to keep all city tiles self sufficient (unless theres a roleplaying reason not to be), and am using both roleplay elements as well as logic to make decisions in the development of the region. This means I have no clue how my region might look in 5 more updates, which makes it pretty much an adventure, hopefully just as much for you as for me! Anyway, onto the company showcases! Gonway Mining co. is a company that has been responsible for triggering the first developments in the region, and continues to be of large influence. It's the largest company in the region, in workforce, profit, investment in the region as well as physical influence on the region. Without Gonway Mining co. this region probably would still consist of endless forests today. Gonway Mining co. is a company that up until now exclusively focuses on mining browncoal. The company already was exploiting a browncoal mine outside the region, and has further expanded in Quynneth after intensive prospecting. Currently several consessions are being mined, and with the arrival of the bucket wheel excavator mining is proceeding so fast that current concessions are near to being depleted, and Gonway is on the brink of moving on to a new concession. Right next to the mine, at Gonway Industrial, three browncoal powered plants serve as additional income for the company, by providing power to both the region as well as a southern neighbouring region. Gonway Mining co. is also responsible for the creation of the first railroad. This has led to the explosive growth of Innit Industrial, the industrialized harbour area where Gonway is unloading their trains of browncoal onto barges for transport over river, then sea. Gonway's working force largely lived in initially The Sheds, a workers town near the mine, but lately more and more workers have been moving to Fishenflies, causing the town to grow so fast it currently is agglomerating with Landing, and only has a thin strip of trees separating it from the ever expanding Innit Industrial. Dunce Farming Cooperative got founded by the son and eleven grand children of Bill Dunce. Bill Dunce was the first farmer in the region, and there's no need saying that farming runs in the family. Though Bill only had one son, his son had eleven children, and all of 'm became farmers. At first Bills son expanded the farm to five farmfields, but with all grandchildren now unified in the cooperative, Dunce Farming now possesses a total of 72 farm fields. Being in a cooperative they are able to buy and share large machinery, causing even larger profits and enabling them to pay off their SimNational bank loans within a few years. All Bills grandchildren decided on living in the same town. Although the town initially was called Two Snails, the towns name officially got changed to Duncewood two years ago. The town is entirely surrounded by farmfields owned by Dunce Farming Cooperative, and in this particular picture you can still see Bills old house at the lake in the top right corner. Though Bill Dunce himself is not with us anymore, his name lives on at the Market square in Landing, still referred to by Landings inhabitants as 'Bills market'. The marketsquare, as well as 3 rural grocery stores are co-owned by Dunce Farming Cooperative and worked by franchisers. The successful cooperation causes food prices to remain low in the region, which helps to attract even more people to settle in the region. SimNational Bank is one of the large investors in the region. Together with Gonway Mining co. they have set up an extensive advertising campaign to attract settlers to the region, which has turned out to be very effective over the years. SimNational Bank's cheap loans helped starters in a great way in the early development of the region. Though it has been a bit of a gamble for SimNational Bank to invest so heavily in the area, the excellent results of the advertising campaign, and the successrate of Quynneths companies have more then paid off for the bank. The banks headquarters in Quynneth is currently the tallest building in the region, and the marble and hardwood themed offices are a display of SimNational Banks achievements in the region. Simcoast Lumber co. is one of the early players too. Next to Gonway Mining co. it is the #2 job provider of the region. Quynneth is heavily covered with forest. Every field, lot, or road needs clearing of trees, as well as the mining concessions. No need to say that Simcoast has made a small fortune by now. The tell tale red buildings of the lumber company stand out near the waters edge of Sawdust. Both Sawdust as well as Landing have owed large part of their growth to Simcoast Lumber co. The company does not only need people at the sawmill, but there's hundreds of operators, loggers, and truckers out there in the forests clearing room for every single expansion of the regions developments. By now a second sawmill has been built at Old Gorb. Due to the success of the first mill it's a near to exact copy of the mill at Sawdust. Old Gorb has seen similar growth as Sawdust due to the vicinity of the sawmill, which has led to the existence of New Gorb at the northern river bank. With developments expanding to the west the new mill has been doing well, and Old and New Gorb are expected to experience explosive growth due to it in the near future. CJ's Waste Management & Eco Technology is one of the more recent players in Quynneths economy. All garbage used to be shipped out of the region (or illegally discarded in the forest), but the region is seeing such growth that this has fast become too expensive. CJ's has jumped into this gap, and successfully so. With every town now reachable over road, CJ's Waste management has chosen a not so central, but very cheap location for one of their latest innovations, a cyclic garbage dump at Wilson's Ridge. The dump consists of several separate sections. Only one section at a time will be connected by road. Once full, it will be closed off and the next section will be opened. This way the first section can have a headstart at decomposing. By the time the last section is in use the first section will have fully decomposed again and will be ready for reuse, and the cycle can start all over. Though larger in surface then a large dump in one piece, the advantage is that the decomposition is a continuous process. Next to that CJ's has fitted the section with up to date technology like watertight underlayers, sturdy containment walls, waste water filtering and recirculation systems, and for the stuff they really don't know what to do with, a large incinerator. Although CJ's Waste Management is currently just making enough money to pay the rent on their loans, there's no other parties interested in garbage, and their future might look brighter then expected. That's it for this update, I hope you've enjoyed it. For your convenience I've marked all screenshot locations on the above map to give you a sense of where in the region the companies are active. Looking forward to any comments and criticism! As usual I'll leave you with the traffic view. As you can see here's been quite some growth compared to the last one... Araguy
A relatively small city of 100,000, Araguy is a scenic city situated on the isthmus connecting the smaller Northern portion of Venika Island to the larger southern mainland. The city has a sprawling commercial district on the Northern shore of the isthmus along with large, high wealth, high rises on the southern shore. The cities two busiest avenues, Araguy Avenue and University Avenue intersect at what is considered the heart of the city: Seen below is the southern shore high rises: The city also has a major highway running through it, that connects it with the other large cities in the region: And one small municipal airport to further connect it with the rest of the world: ? But, to the east of all wealthy southern shore and booming northern shore, there is a dirty industrial district where the middle and lower class citizens work. It puts a permanently ugly mark on what is otherwise a beautiful city. Sorry, for my first real post being so late, I've been very busy lately with theatre and haven't had the time to make a post. Hope you enjoyed it! What's Next? Expect to see posts soon on Antinika's geography, the small but extremely wealthy town of Estre, the concentrated metropolis of Fentai, and the largest city of the region so far... Eshtawn! All coming soon!

Fantasion- 1st journal Entry
Fantasion, a city on the green plains with the wind and weather a city in them far hills would experience. Brief History: In 1948 the Nation of Bruchelon occupied a command post on the Henwick River, a major port for transporting food, water, and materials. After the Kumplee Wars which caused damage to the country many command posts started becoming towns, some fell, some went on. Fantasion was one of the cities that moved on, but with struggles as the river began evaporating due to warm weather and no rain, Fantasion nearly fell but when a Australian Immigrant came to the region he found something special about the region. William Manbey was the founder of the Geographic Association of Bruchelon. The find that Manbey found was that the ground was always wet in the forest in the surrounding area, which led to him investigating what was wrong with the ground. After studying and digging a hole 20 meters deep he found fresh water, which led to the conclusion that a large glacier had transformed the region. When William went to the Headquarters in Ploropkosdok he was honered with a token of honorary from the Bruchelon Government. When news spread across the region people flocked to Fantasion to invest their money in bringing up the water from the ground. In 1984 , 36 years later the population had skyrocketed to 28,930 residents compared to 140 in 1948. Old Strattorth founded!
Hi! Welcome to my Cities XL 2011 City Journal about my first town Old Strattorth. 16 Oktober 2010 - 350 inhabitants. Interviewer: "Hello, we are here today with the brand new mayor of Old Strattorth, diScOpOlis. He will give us a short interview about his newly founded town Old Strattorth. Ok, Go ahead Mayor." Mr. diScOpOlis: "Thank you Misses... ... Welcome and thanks for checking by for my short introduction of my newly founded town Old Strattorth. Old Strattorth currently holds 350 inhabitants. Old Strattorth is a medieval orientated town that will be focusing on the farm industry and the local industries. Now for some visual presentation: This first picture shows off the current aerial view of Old Strattorth. Notice that Old Strattorth is nestled in the middle of a beautiful forest. Surrounding all of Old Strattorth. I plan to further invest in forest-grow by planting more trees which result in more dense forests. A closer look to the village center of Old Strattorth. Currently I'm low on a budget but we will be expanding step by step with the building of a church in the near future. Here you can see the local farms providing food to the inhabitants. It's lovely to just drive through the lane and enjoying the local farms surrounded by nature. And finally a picture of our local industry, filling up the need for jobs and giving an income to the locals. On the mountain is our Utility Center, that provides Old Strattorth of the basic needs. I hope you enjoyed watching my first humble city journal and if you got any comments, I'd be glad to read about them."
