Sorry for the few days' worth of absence! Been between a magnitude 6 earthquake, a tropical storm, keeping my grad school research progress up-to-date and reinstalling SimCity 4 due to problems related to the latest Windows 10 update.

We have more progress in the construction of my latest big n' shiny piece of infrastructure!

֍ RHENNUS REGIONAL AIRPORT ֎
SECOND CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Elements added so far include an enlarged cargo terminal, an enlarged passenger terminal, full landing markings for a precision runway, a future commercial area by the passenger terminal and a relocation neighborhood for the portion of the village evicted to make room for the airport facilities.

I am, however, missing small hangars for general aviation use, large hangars for bigger aircraft maintenance, a proper airport firefighting unit, ancillary logistics services (essentially a nearby warehouse district) and ancillary passenger services (ground transportation, lodging). Hangars and proper airport firefighting units would be located where the two green farms to the right are at.

I'm also debating whether the current air traffic control tower location is optimum or if it could be elsewhere, as well as debating whether the road tunnel leading to the town of Volus (just beyond the runway) should be kept for the neighbor connection.

yM9egvF.jpg

The cargo terminal can handle up to seven (7) large planes (in this case Boeing 787s) and six smaller planes (in this case Boeing 757s) and is located optimally to facilitate access to the Rhennus Industrial Park (beyond view to the lower left).

8tgucXt.jpg

The passenger area has been expanded to include a fourth terminal where I used to have smaller aircraft parking spaces. Its gates are distributed in this manner:

* Terminal A (upper right, as originally shown in a previous post): 10 smaller passenger planes, including small regional jets and Embraer E-190s.

* Terminal B (left, as originally shown in a previous post): 6 gates able to fit Airbus A330s and 1 gate able to fit a Boeing 737

* Terminal C (bottom, as originally shown in a previous post): 4 gates for private jets and 3 gates for turboprop planes.

* Terminal D (right, new addition): 10 gates fitting including small regional jets and Boeing 737s (not the MAX ones because the Royal Air Transport Corporation does not believe in the FAA's assessment and still needs to conduct its own evaluations).

PvbnoCA.jpg

Due to the demonstrated high need of space for all airport facilities, a rather large portion of the village adjacent to the airport had to be evicted. As such, the Royal Air Corporation has coordinated with Rhennus' municipal government and the Royal Planning and Land Use Ministry to provide a more adequate housing location. The site identified was closer to the Rhennus Industrial Park, facilitating access to employment and reducing exposure to airport operation nuisance.

To the airport experts and enthusiast: what else should I tweak, fix or expand to make this better?

Where do you live incidentally? Not many countries experience yearly both earthquakes and hurricanes: do you live somewhere the Caribbean?

Here we experience the strongest storms in the world Philippines. Last june having a 5.0 magnitude while a Signal #5 storm stronger than huricanes in US and Europe so it's normal here. We don't call em hurricanes anymore 500kph storms. Even internet lines, Electricity, mostly everything even buildings and housing here are reinforced.

Phillippines? That would explain it. Won't it cost more for housing, rent and power if everything is structurally reinforced?

mean.... don't take me wrong... but...

Do the planes in your country fly on good intentions?

The Kingdom of Rota has a minimal military force specifically intended to protect itself, not harm neighbors that disagree with it--it's no grand power that supposedly needs to project hard power to assert its interests in the region or globally (or even beyond the globe if we're talking of a futuristic sci-fi setting). Aside from that, this particular airport only features civilian aircraft, and I'm not sure it'll even have enough space for military aircraft if I wanted.

FUEL TANKS!!!!

Where are your Fuel Tanks for storing fuel? And don't tell me undergroundthat's cheating!!!

There's fuel tanks already! They're just small and distributed around the airport. Take a look at the cargo terminal where the five Boeing 787s are lined up, each of them has its own fuel station. There's other fuel tank areas scattered throughout too. And finally, as part of the next round of expansions, I was considering adding a larger fuel storage facility, haven't used the oil tank lots I've had for ages anywhere in the Kingdom. The tricky part is providing the appropriate pipeline connection to a suitable source or terminal, which will likely be located in the city of Imbin (city to the left side of the airport's general view).

Also, I bet the locals and the employees and the travellers and pilots would love for you to install a local fire station on the airside of the airport - the tarmac, the runway. Easy access to both for quickly responding to emergencies of any kind (including medical evacuation - MEDEVAC, or disaster relief logistic operations).

In the short-term I have various small firefighting stations scattered around the airport. I know @tariely 's recent pre-fabricated airport includes an airport firefighting terminal, I have to check the dependencies to see what's the original, or try and get just the needed dependencies to use that one and somehow fit it within my airport.

I was gonna ask you...

Is there any way you could arrange for me a couple of aircraft parked at a remote stand without the jetbridge like you have in your airport? My lot editor doesnt work, and I am frightened my coding enough to frown upon having to sort out the mess. I'd rather be very nice and cuddly and ask for a favour to whom is instead skilled and doesnt break a sweat doing it. I'd be wmore than happy to return the favor :)

I haven't actually tried that! But it's a worthwhile experiment for the weekend. In the short-term, I can refer you to some airplane MMPs that have been already posted and can be plopped over RMIP airport surfaces. For the latter I'd have to know which airplanes in particular you're interested in having made this way.

In fact, @joelyboy911 has multiple airplane sets as MMPs--take a look at his uploaded content!

Just about complete!

PENDING NON-AIRPORT ANCILLARY FACILITIES

I admire your endeavour. May I say it seems to me a LOT of airplane terminals for a one runway airport, though ? Have you considered doubling the runway (or cutting on the terminals ?) Then again I don't know much about airports (except for the one I borrowed from SCF and some I saw in various CJs *;))

I'm still in the validation process, researching and comparing with real airports. For single runway airports, the highest I've found is 115 passenger gates at London Gatwick, that place processes more than 46 million passengers per year and effectively operates with a single runway (in reality, two super close runways that cannot operate at the same time). My airport currently has 7 general aviation gates (itty-bitty planes), 26 commercial passenger jet gates, 7 large cargo plane gates and 6 medium cargo planes, for a total of 46 gates. Keep in mind as well that the Kingdom of Rota is inspired in both the Tohoku region of Japan and the European Alps, airports in these mountainous regions don't have the luxury of having multiple runways unless they're extremely large.

Another big issue I have is that the RMIP Team made the airport components too expensive to maintain, so it takes a disproportionately large number of gates, cargo plane parking spots and terminal building floor area to offset the maintenance cost. I've been selectively lowering the maintenance cost of certain airport elements to balance the city budget . So far I've lowered the price of fences, grass areas and blank ramp cells, but I'll have to start doing this with runways, taxiways and ramp cells with markings, and change the monthly cost of the cargo sorting facilities into revenue. Rhennus started with a super comfy budget surplus of around 10,000 simoleons per month (25,000 revenue, 15,000 expenses), now with the airport in place (plus the modifications I've made) the monthly budget stands at 34,500 in revenue and 39,000 in expenses, yet to enact the Lottery Ordinance to provide at least 10,000 additional simoleons per month.

I'll do some testing with the pricing of the airport facility component maintenance costs, such that the airport would still be profitable with the removal of Terminal D (9 medium passenger jet gates). If it works, I'll replace the terminal with a holding area for passenger planes. This would bring down the commercial passenger jet gates down to 15 and overall gates to 37.

Adding a second runway isn't an option for multiple reasons:

  • Terrain constraints: the Kingdom of Rota has very few suitable spots for large airports and I want to keep a realistic scaling. A second runway would have to be at least 700 meters (roughly 44 cells) separate from the existing runway in staggered operation. For simultaneous operation, it'd have to be 1,300 meters separate. I'd either have to build it in the neighboring city district or evict all of the remaining farmland, with the added risk of flooding from the Platinum River.

  • Jurisdiction size: the Kingdom of Rota isn't supposed to be a very populous place, I don't think we'll go past 1,100,000 inhabitants and 2,500,000 visitors per year.

  • Role in the airport system: Rhennus is a secondary airport in the proposed full system for the Kingdom and specializing in cargo, the main one will be the Kingdom of Rota International. That one will have two runways in excess of 3,000m (Rhennus' single runway is 2,400m between blast pads), handle more large planes and feature a much larger passenger terminal building.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New information!

I spent all evening devising a potential operation schedule for the airport, examined the way the airport operation could happen and have the following numbers:

  • Headway (time separation) between aircraft movements (landings, take-offs): 3.5 minutes on average, shortest at 2.7 minutes, both are still above the minimum required 2 minutes. This is using the single runway, 26 commercial airline gates, 7 general aviation gates, 6 small cargo plane gates and 7 large cargo plane gates.

  • Total aircraft maneuvers: 150,380 per year, or an average of 412 per day (maximum capacity would be 720 plane movements per day using the 2 minute minimum headway).

  • Passenger traffic: 6,105,300 per year.

  • Passenger plane traffic: 136 passenger planes per day or 49,640 passenger planes per year, including general aviation.

  • Cargo traffic: 301,440,000 metric tons per year.

  • Cargo plane traffic: 140 cargo planes per day or 51,100 annual planes.

Granted, reaching these numbers would take some years as the economy adapts to getting the most use of these facilities. Especially with the tourism-related initiatives, my previous estimate of 2,500,000 annual visitors would fall short. Maybe a more ambitious goal of 3,500,000-4,000,000 annual visitors should be considered.

What is good when you have nothing to say is that you can always pretend to listen. Anyway it does not prevent to think!

please forgive me if my previous post seemed like a joke of bad taste, but it was just a joke. I love your work Lucario and I follow your updates diligently. I just happen to have a thing for fuel tanks and when i see airports devoted to gates but no large fuel farms i feel sad XD

Don't take me wrong XD

Scribosilyn: Those street textures are quite amazing. Are they ploppable? The reason I ask is because some of them have two-sided pavement and others have one-sided pavement, thus the "automata" on the streets would be MMPs, presumably from VIP's vehicle MMPs.

There is something definitely ploppable as there is a street crossing over a rail switch and the rail signals too are not on both sides in that area. *:)

@Scribosilyn There is not enough likes in the world for how good that area looks !
