It's a smog capturer! Ingame the pollution is soot and actual, real-life air pollution is sulphur dioxide, various nitrous oxides/dioxides and other nasty stuff- the stuff that will make you choke. CO2 is not a pollutant though since it's a vital gas required for photosynthesis in plants.

The more CO2 there is the more plants grow, the higher crop yields become and even arid areas are slowly receding/diminishing as biomass flourishes, prehistorically CO2 has often been around 1000 to 2000 parts per million, sometimes even higher (during the Cambrian explosion of life it hit 4000pcm!). For millions of years plants have been struggling to efficiently photosynthesize they have been "suffocating" and have slowly adapted to low-level CO2 environments, yet their genetic legacy (of growing in high-level CO2 environments) remains intact and thus allows them to grow at vastly higher levels of CO2- as can be seen in professional/industrial greenhouses (800 - 1200pcm).

Very, very rarely has CO2 levels (in the air) ever caused creatures, who respire, to suffocate or be short of breath. The only times I can think of was the Lake Nyos disaster in Cameroon, or a limnic eruption, when CO2 in a lake suddenly gets displaced by an internal landslide and creates a rolling gas cloud to drift beyond the lake.

To see places where CO2 does suffocate- look at stagnant ponds and bodies of water shrinking in size, the creatures (i.e. fish) which breathe oxygen consume more than the plants can produce and eventually CO2 levels become higher than oxygen levels (i.e. 10% or greater). CO2 is a trace gas which composes less than 0.1% of the atmosphere, in fact there will be more oxygen (released from the plants) as CO2 increases, so increasing CO2 levels will make it even easier for humans and animals to breathe and respire.

Around 10000BC the world came very close to a mass extinction event when CO2 hit a low of 200pcm, if CO2 hits 150pcm then plants cannot photosynthesise and if that happened it would cause an extinction which would exceed even the one which afflicted the Permian period where 95% of life died and the supercontinent Pangaea (the only continent at the time) became a colossal desert with life clinging on by the coastline and rivers...

Once CO2 emissions peak a few centuries down the road (or longer) and when the planet reaches its greenest and most biomass rich point in many tens of thousands of years, watch the biomass steadily decrease, the deserts gradually expand, the crop yields slowly fall and the numbers of animals and creatures (which depend on plants) decrease. Fossil fuels have given this planet an even greater lease of life and brought us many, many centuries of time to consider the real threat: the long-term decrease in CO2 levels and the ice age that will inevitably follow.

@The British Sausage Yep I'm aware of the role Carbon Dioxide plays in the ladder of life but too much of it can upset the balance and can cause a greenhouse effect on our planet like it did in the Cambrian era.

Starting this year we are actually paying a carbon tax here. Go figure.

Onirosanti is a city with a name inspired by Magnasanti and a layout based on Mega-Region. My challenge here is to build a futuristic metropolis without being too dystopian though. And here is some progress. The final product will have plenty of parks, rewards, landmarks and tram lines.

I should be able to release it in the next couple of days. There will be 2 versions. 1 plop landmark with jobs4x4 and 1 C$$ grow also 4x4.
