EA canvasing player feedback on offline mode and content for future expansion packs
Hellken commented on Deever's article in News
I couldn't disagree more. The details remain pretty good when zooming in, which is something I can't say for SC4. Though at the time of it' launch, SC4 graphics were good. As I mentioned, friends who don't even play the game noticed how nice the graphics (for SC2013) were when they saw it on my screen. Hello sir. I beg to differ. Pictures by OlScare / Benoit: Now... I know what you are thinking: But, all of that is custom content! Look at this picture: 4 default Maxis buildings in the top picture. Look at the attention to detail. Picture by paeng: -
Has this game met EA's expectation financially
Hellken replied to elavery's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Note: 2003: The SimCity™ Franchise has sold over 13 million units worldwide. 2007: Over 17 Million SimCity™ games have now been purchased world - wide since the launch of the original game. If these numbers are true, how many copies did SC4 sell? I don't think it accounted for all 4 million copies but it's reasonable to say that it contributed quite a considerable percentage. As for the rest, Sim City (1989) is now "abandonware" and so is Sim City 2000 (still for sale in some places, but mostly "abandonware"). Sim City 3000/Unlimited is almost extinct in stores. I still see boxed editions of Sim City 4, 10 years after launch. As for the numbers, I don't know. -

Please provide a source for these numbers and please indicate the date of the source. They are from EA's financial reports (Simcity 2000 and Simcity 1 are from the Maxis reports) which as mentioned were posted in previous threads regarding the same topic. EA quit reported sales of Simcity 4 in 2008 because it was selling so little. Obviously EA quit reporting sales of Simcity 3000 by 2005 due the product being discontinued. Seriously do Simcity fans not pay attention when EA/Maxis announces sales data and press releases? Here is the link to the press release about the launch sales for Simcity 2013 at 1.6M on May 7th. The game still manages to chart on the UK, EU, and US top 20. Sadly we do not have access to sale data from these charts Or you can read this Standford paper for Simcity 3000 and before. The paper was published in 2004. EA released a press release in 2004 when Simcity 4 passed 1 million mark, which you may be able to find via google. We have no PR statements regarding Simcity 4 sales after that. Based on 8 years and Steam data it is an assumption that Simcity 4 hit 2M, though there is a good chance Simcity 4 never did. Games always get a press release when they clear 2M sold though Simcity 4 has not had such press release yet. Since EA/Maxis has been silent on EA's sales post 2004, that is a troubling sign. Don't speculate about the numbers. I want accurate evidence and sources for these numbers, not estimates based on unsupported assumptions. I read the Stanford article you linked to: [As of 2003] Sim City 2000: The market’s reaction to SimCity 2000 reflected the game’s merits. SimCity 2000—finally released in January of 1994—received rave reviews and sold more copies in three months than the original version did in its first two years (Perkins 4). Within six months it was clear that SimCity 2000 would become the top-selling game of the year. It went on to ship over 3.4 million copies, and Maxis projected revenues of thirty-five million dollars for 1995. [As of 2003] Sim City 3000: But this, apparently, was exactly what consumers wanted. SimCity 3000 quickly topped the charts, and the market eventually snapped up 4.6 million copies (Bradshaw). Like its prequel in 1994, SimCity 3000 was the best selling title of its year. With the success of SimCity 3000, Maxis rose out of ruin “like a phoenix from the ashes” (Keighley 1). According to this all Sim City games since SimCity (1989) have sold 17 million but this was in 2007: http://simcityds.ea.com/ Here's the problem: There have been many editions/expansions of each game: ie. Sim City 3000 Unlimited, Sim City 4's Rush Hour expansion pack / Sim City 4 Deluxe. How are these accounted for? EDIT: SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition was still a top 10, best selling game in 2007 (4 years after launch): http://asia.gamespot.com/news/burning-crusade-lights-up-07-pc-sales-chart-6185090 Now that's just SC4 Deluxe: How about the numbers for people who bought SC4 and SC4:RH separately? -

Please provide a source for these numbers and please indicate the date of the source. EDIT: By the way, Sim City (2013)'s numbers are exaggerated. 2 ~3 Million by now? How many copies were sold in June anyway? Did they have a super sale? March 2013 (2 weeks after launch) : 1.1 Million copies sold. April 2013, EA announces it has sold 1.3 Million copies. May 2013, EA's Financial Report stated 1.6 Million copies. -
CNN: SimCity Creator Will Wright Happy about Microsoft's DRM Reversal
Hellken posted a submission in News
.... Digital Rights Management (DRM) has been an issue with the launch of EA's SimCity earlier this year and the announcement of Microsoft's Xbox One features at E3. As a developer, what are your thoughts on the role DRM plays in gaming today? We're coming at this with the mentality that when I buy media I own the disk or whatever for the rest of my life. I can put that DVD in my machine and watch it and share it with friends and trade it in. We're slowly moving to this idea that everything is on the cloud and I'm actually buying rights, and I don't physically own the actual product. There's a legal component to this, and there's a consumer psychological component to this. The sensibility of being able to play a game I want to on a PC or any device is great. I love that freedom and the free-to-play games have made good use of that. From the consumers' point of view, I can really understand a lot of the backlash to DRM. The fact that if something's required on the Internet that means they can't play it on the airplane or if their Internet connection goes down. It was interesting watching the Microsoft thing. I thought it was very impressive how responsive Microsoft (MSFT) was to that. DRM is going to be an ongoing negotiation because there are features to the DRM, or at least Internet connectivity, that is a very attractive solution to the piracy issue. Gaming has had a long history of piracy, but you can't use DRM at the expense of the customers. I'm not really sure I have a clear answer to this except that it's going to be something that we slowly acclimate the player base towards. It's really not a lot different from if you have an MMO or peer-to-peer game that requires connectivity with other players, but a lot of games don't necessarily require that. If you're just going to require it for DRM purposes only that's obviously where it upset the consumers. What are your thoughts of the power that gamers have now to voice change through social media and actually impact game development and game policies and move a giant like Microsoft to change its Xbox One policies? That part I think is great because that's something that I've always believed in -- getting the players very involved not just after the game ships, but even before and try to listen to them. The kind of games I'm interested in, and actually the way games are going, is they're becoming far more baseline communities of people playing the game and doing a lot of cool stuff peer-to-peer, whether it's content sharing or competition or forming social connections. I tend to think of the fan base, especially the hardcore fan base, as co-developers. These people with a passion for your project are going to go out and sell your game to other people and pull other people in. The more they feel like they have some ownership over the process and they're not just kind of customers, the better. To see a company like Microsoft actually sit back, listen, and understand the fans and respond to them is impressive. For a company that size to be that responsive is great. These companies are the ones that obviously keep us in business and allow us to make games. On the other side there's the Internet thing where 5% of the people are making all the noise. Sometimes they represent the other 95%, sometimes they don't. A lot of times the 5% are asking for ridiculously elaborate features, and as a game designer you know that's going to make the game inaccessible to everybody else. There are these people that want you to push a franchise in a super hardcore direction, and therefore we're going to close it off to 95% of the players, so you have to understand what kind of feedback that they're giving you. But when it's something that's 5% representing the other 95 that will probably feel the same way, then I think it's really valuable. Read the rest here. -
Brown Grass beside roads and some structures.
Hellken replied to asarhu's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
No, it only modifies roundabouts. ---- Some No Grass mods are better than others. The Japanese NAM Facelift Mod had better quality No Grass Mods for curves. Only replaces it if there is zoning or a building next to it so everything looks uniform. -
This is the front page: "Gesticulating Mimes" All links to the downloads and forums are dead too. Did they move or is it dead?

Hellken replied to asarhu's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
You need a NO GRASS mod. NO GRASS mods remove that ugly texture beside the roads and give you sidewalk. Here ( you will need to register): http://simcity.cn/thread-113222-1-3.html http://simcity.cn/attachment.php?aid=253924&down=1 If you need help registering: See this post: EDIT: %$$$! The links are dead. Anyway, you will need this file: zzz_Avenues_Roundabouts_NoGrass.dat by AdolfPikachu at SimCityChina. EDIT: Is simcity.cn dead? -

EA has confirmed funfair DLC for its controversial 2013 reboot of SimCity after it temporarily appeared on a retailer website. While it was quickly removed, the SimCity Amusement Park Pack DLC briefly appeared on UK retailer Green Man Gaming. The blurb for the expansion offered SimCity players the chance "build the amusement park of your dreams, right in the middle of your city." The description also offered "classic rides, vehicle rides and thrill rides." "Will you focus [on] the aesthetic look or maximising your profits? Perhaps you can have the best of both worlds," concluded the description. Following the leak, the official SimCity Twitter feed confirmed a May 28 release for the DLC. "Some of you may have seen thrilling new #SimCity content that arrived too early at the gate. It’s coming May 28. We think you’ll be amused," wrote the account.

I have been looking everywhere for those rocks. Are those by Heblem? All the links are dead. Are they available anywhere else? I am also looking for the red building (Picture 3). That's a good - looking city! -
Great update!

A lot of companies are starting "always - online" connection policies or finding new ways to keep their eyes on their customers. This model is spreading from games to software like Adobe. I don't care about console video game wars; but thank goodness Japanese companies still have common sense. I am happy SONY punched Microsoft in the face last week. Telling paying customers to connect to servers for products to work should be a crime.

What SimCity Teaches Us About Real Cities of the Future
Hellken commented on newyorkrunaway1's article in News
SimCity tells us a lot of things about the future: 1) There will be a great nuclear war (the Apocalypse) and we will have to live in bubble cities - separated from each other. 2) In the future, "job security" is a meaningless idea. We will work like slaves. Someone will replace you everyday. 3) Agriculture will die. We will become nomads, hunters and look for food. We will occupy any building we see and make it our home. It's just like the Stone Age, when cavemen left their caves and looked for a new cave to live in. -
