  1. Serenity Valley - Boreal

    Version 1.0

This is my first hand-made map. Serenity Valley has two small winding rivers that converge on higher ground, then meet up with a larger, lower river. There are three possible locations for a hydro dam. A dam with 1600 MW at the big waterfall is possible. Panoramic views of mountains and hills, with a small amount of playable space in the foothills. Otherwise, the map is flat at two different heights. The lowlands are fertile, the highlands have some oil and ore. There are also two canals, intended to look man-made, and perfect for use with waterfront walkways. (See example image above.) Waterfront Walkway by Tair http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=422857990 Walkway by VIP http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=426140797 Hats off to MrMiyagi for his wonderful map-making guide. I really needed help with my mountains, and I discovered his tip on using Wilbur. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=482232215 Unfortunately for this map, I was too far into the project to use it, but I will definitely use it in the future. So the mountains are entirely hand drawn here, and I hope you find them suitable. I hope you enjoy this map as much as I do. I imagined it for days and started it twice before it started to take shape. Steam workshop link: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=503001583
  2. Astoria OR - Boreal

    Version 1.0

Never say die! Welcome to scenic Astoria, Oregon, home of The Goonies. I'm a Goonie. Are you? Astoria is a wee bit west of Portland and just about to the end of the Lewis & Clark Trail. This map began with a height map of Astoria (fiddled with in Wilbur) and was developed for challenging game play, as opposed to loyally following the real life map. This map has almost everything you could want: abundant resources, scenic views, bayside beach, hilly terrain, ample transport connections--including prime seaport and scenic walkway locations--and, of course, pirate coves. ARR, MATEY! Well, what are you waiting for? It's up to you to save the Goondocks.
  3. So, for a couple weeks now I keep seeing this error (see title) pop up in the middle of game play, and it simply says "no details." Typically, I see my power and water icons start flashing in the background over every building, but I can't close out of the error and have to kill the app with the task manager. I have not unsubscribed from any assets since I started the city I'm playing on, and I don't have Advanced Vehicle Options (which, according to the guides, is a possible culprit) installed because I think it caused another issue I was having with people not moving in and residential buildings saying "0/0 households." I searched the Steam forums and read the troubleshooting guides, and the only advice is essentially: unsubscribe from everything and start over. It's super annoying that this is the only way to deal with this issue. I'm wondering, oh talented and godlike modders, if there's a way to create a mod that will identify the issue, or if there's a mod that already exists for this. I found Isolated Failures, but the description indicates it's only for mods that break on startup. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=505051010&searchtext=isolated+failures There's Modtools, which doesn't explicitly say it can help with this issue, but I'm going to mess around with it. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=450877484&searchtext=modtools I have the building themes mod , and I don't have any buildings in a theme that aren't loaded. Thoughts?
  4. omg, @boformer, that is amazing. You are a true philanthropist! The game has been stable since I unsubscribed from a few commercial buildings earlier, but I am a skeptic and believe it will happen again (because it's been stable before). I should probably even resubscribe and try to cause it so I can use this mod. I see people post about this issue a lot in other forums (on Steam, Facebook). Is it OK for me to share this with them when they do?
  5. Well, the issue has been happening for weeks, so it wouldn't likely be something I subscribed to recently. But I've always suspected it was a low density commercial growable, and now I think I have proof. I went back into the city and paused the game, then dezoned all my low density commercial except for terraced shops and pubs, which is mostly what I had, and the game continued to run without error. So, I'm going to disable all my LD commercial and start re-enabling them to see if I can isolate the (hopefully) one faulty asset.
  6. @Darf, it doesn't happen when I load the game, but I do use the theme manager. I have made a lot of my own themes and cloned some buildings too, in addition to themes from the workshop. I don't think I would want to play without that mod. It makes the game for me. That said, it is happening again in my new city, and it's happening about 4 minutes after I start my last save game. I've tried loading it three times and without fail, within a few minutes, it crashes. I'm convinced it's a growable of some kind. But now the result is catastrophic, not just annoying, because I can't keep playing this city after putting in about 14 hours on it. Hrmpf. @boformer, I know I am not the only person this happens to, so if you could make a mod to help isolate the problem, that would make a huge difference for me and other players. The fact that the problem can't be isolated by default is basically just stupid to me. A game developed with modding in mind should have some kind of debug tool built in. If this bug comes while you're already playing, it must mean that the asset causing it is not present when you open the save. The game crashes when it tries to spawn it. Maybe you could try to identify an asset that you have subbed to but that hasn't grown in your city yet ? I have over 800 assets, so that would take a long time! It's just frustrating to me that I essentially have to manually sift through a bunch of files to find the source of my problem. Code should be able to do that for me.
  7. It just happened again. Same error details. Yes, it causes the game to essentially crash. I can't exit out of the error. When I click "OK" or the X in the corner, it just pops right back up, so I have to kill the game with the task manager and lose all my work. I try to save every few minutes, but you know how it goes. Sometimes it turns out I haven't saved for a half hour, and I lose a ton of work. I had to turn off autosave because it was causing crashes. It would say "saving" then "packaging" in the upper right corner, but it would get stuck on "packaging" and if I looked at the file in Windows explorer, it wasn't actually saved yet. But it would just be stuck on "packaging" without end. I've let it sit for a half hour that way to see if it would finish, but it wouldn't, and if I would initiate a new save, the game would crash. I appreciate any help.
  8. OK, here's the error info: Object reference not set to an instance of an object [System.NullReferenceException] Details: No details System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object at Building.SampleWalkingHeight (Vector3 worldPos, Single terrainHeight) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 at HumanAI.SimulationStep (UInt16 instanceID, .CitizenInstance& citizenData, .Frame& frameData, Boolean lodPhysics) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 at ResidentAI.SimulationStep (UInt16 instanceID, .CitizenInstance& citizenData, .Frame& frameData, Boolean lodPhysics) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 at CitizenAI.SimulationStep (UInt16 instanceID, .CitizenInstance& data, Vector3 physicsLodRefPos) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 at HumanAI.SimulationStep (UInt16 instanceID, .CitizenInstance& data, Vector3 physicsLodRefPos) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 at CitizenManager.SimulationStepImpl (Int32 subStep) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 at SimulationManagerBase`2[Manager,Properties].SimulationStep (Int32 subStep) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 at CitizenManager.ISimulationManager.SimulationStep (Int32 subStep) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 at SimulationManager.SimulationStep () [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 at SimulationManager.SimulationThread () [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0 Now, I know there was a game update today, so you'd expect to get a few errors with mods or assets. This particular error has been happening quite often over the past few weeks, and there are dozens of threads on the steam workshop and on a FB group I'm in where other players are complaining of the same issue. Some people complain that it happens on game load, others, like me, find that it happens randomly in the middle of gameplay, as if it's caused by a growable asset somewhere in the city. And when it happens to me, the water and power zots go off above every building. It might be worth noting that just a few weeks ago before this issue started, I was having another problem where residential buildings would grow but no one would move in, and the info panel said there were 0/0 households. It should say 0/1 or 0/3, but it said zero out of zero. I solved that problem by disabling everything, and then re-enabling groups of mods and assets. I narrowed it down to Advanced Vehicle Options. Not sure why that mod would cause such an issue, but disabling it solved the problem. Could be coincidence. It's also worth noting that this happens on new cities in which I start the game, subscribe to nothing new, unsubscribe from nothing, experience stable gameplay for hours, and then suddenly, I start getting the error. Again, I think it's a growable. But the error info has no helpful information.
  9. Will do. It hasn't happened since I posted this, but next time I will grab that info.
  10. Attercap Buildings

@Attercap, I always love seeing screenshots from a city someone builds on a map I made, so I thought you might enjoy seeing a screenshot of your buildings in game. I love this view. Props to boformer and feindbold too for the Brooklyn theme and the cloning tool in the themes mod.
  11. Small Town USA

I mixed Attercap's American 1900 buildings with Feindbild's Brooklyn theme and a few civic buildings to create a small town center. I also cloned the level 2 Attercap buildings with Boformer's excellent building themes mod to level 1 for variety. Very happy with the result!
  12. Chinatown Assets

Hi Soldyne, is there any way you can update these props and any other lantern props you've created so they light up? http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/?id=497646829 I played around with lighting in the asset editor, but that's not going to cut it. I don't know anything about lighting a prop, so I'm just sincerely asking if this is possible and if you have any plans to do so. Thanks!
  13. About roads and tabs

I use Traffic++ and Network Extensions together, and they do work together.
  14. Is it possible to create draggable assets that work like paths or even like power lines, but with a different model? I'm thinking draggable: fences of all typesguard railshedgesmaybe even no frills highway or seawalls?
  15. Is it possible to create a road mod that allows upgrading roads by changing their height only? Like I have a 0M road and I want to lift it to 12M without redrawing it?
  16. So Steam has been finicky for me lately. Frankly, for weeks I've had an issue in which I subscribe to something on the workshop and it takes 8 hours before it actually shows up in my content manager so I can use it. Restarting the game, the PC, Steam, etc., none of this works. Only time. Then this weekend, I think something was wrong with the workshop, because quite a few times I'd click a link like "more from followed authors" and it would say there are no items to view. This would happen also when clicking on page 2 or 3 of a search, for example, when there are already displayed several more pages of results. And then yesterday, this happened: For some reason, none of my mods (even the built-in ones) won't display in the content manager. Maps, assets, color corrections all show, but the mods do not. Any suggestions?
  17. I found this buried in the comments of a reddit post, and it worked for me. Who knows what the solution will be the next time I have this problem? Go to Steam > Settings > Downloads > Download Restrictions > UNCHECK "Limit auto updating schedule"
  18. Well, the solution I found was to delete the LUTs I had created from the local Color Correction folder. This means I can only play with my own LUTs if I publish them, but that's not a deal breaker. But after buying After Dark, the problem persists and NOTHING is working to fix it. I can see my subscribed items on the workshop and in the Steam Workshop panel of the game itself, but there are these empty bars to the right that maybe indicate they never downloaded. But there's no reason why they should not have, and I don't even know if that's what they indicate anyway. If anyone knows how to fix this, I'd love to hear about it.
  19. Wow, quite a debate about the merits of sketchup vs. blender. I've decided that I'm going to jump into the rabbit hole and make my best effort at learning 3D modeling. I downloaded both programs. Can anyone tell me, for a $%&^!, which is better for learning the concepts of 3D modeling? I need to walk before I can run, and though I have a background in art and design and am skilled in 2D graphics, I've never done this before. I'll take all the advice I can get. And I'm taking applications for mentors too! OK, that's weird, the site converted the word N-O-O-B into a hidden expletive. Is newbie acceptable?
  20. Nevermind, it's fixed now.
  21. You did that between exams? Boformer, are you from the planet Krypton or something?
  22. Why does it eat a lot of RAM? The textures are optimized. It will not eat more RAM than a few average custom buildings. I'm also hoping for more rail networks, but that is more difficult because the intersections have to be modeled by hand. The alley road that is planned looks really promising for european cities. I'm planning to make a mod that adds different texture and prop variations for networks, for example cobblestone roads, different street lamps and different trees. I wish that Cities: Skylines had a network system similar to Trainfever, that allows you to split and connect lanes at any point: You know what I find myself wishing about trains (beyond what you mention about connections, because they aren't very realistic in game)? Since it's ideal to build local rail separate from cargo rail, and since I like building on 25 tiles, it can be hard to remember the difference between one railway and another without following the track to the nearest station. Wouldn't it be great if there was a separate track for local rail that looked a little different? Would that even be possible?
  23. Show us your Detail Shots

I love making little grottos in the city where only the pedestrians can go, and you have to get on ground level to really appreciate the atmosphere. Here's a shot from a little bench park I created to go with some streetside parking assets I made: Check out the collection on the workshop: http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/?id=517390775
  24. Chinatown Assets

I'm not really fan of the overcolored trees. But these parks look really nice! My favorites so far: Meditation Garden 4x4 Garden of the Healing Spring I'm with you on the trees. I wouldn't download any of the colored trees for a long time, but I realized that as long as some of the buildings have crazy plastic colors, they actually fit in. And depending on which LUT you use, they can look pretty nice. But thanks. I'm having a lot of fun making parks.
