Can I Build High-Rise Building with Just Large Traffic?
xxdita replied to Propfam's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
A certain amount of your population will always demand a particular variety of jobs. This is due to the Census Drives. Breaking down the exact math and how it all works is a bit more than I care to get into at the moment, but you'll see from that link that each wealth class demands a certain amount of commercial jobs. This is a key factor that has been missing in pretty much all traffic testing I've seen, especially in regards to trying to find out how far Sims will go for a particular job, or which they'd prefer to take. Without understanding these Census Drives, such testing is incomplete, if not totally invalid. -
Can I Build High-Rise Building with Just Large Traffic?
xxdita replied to Propfam's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Unless you rely on transient aura to artificially inflate desirability for short bursts to encourage growth, there is really no reason that commercial districts should dilapidate or abandon, as long as the drives for these jobs have not been met elsewhere. -
EQ can be at 200 and you'll still have R$ living in the city. Even with high desirability, you'll have R$. In fact, you will have R$ unless you are actively trying to drive them out, by raising their taxes.

Can I Build High-Rise Building with Just Large Traffic?
xxdita replied to Propfam's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
It's a bit of a chicken/egg thing. Each RCI type begins with a demand of 500 in a new city, just to get things started. If you start a new city connected to an established region, then any unfulfilled demand that has been created by the Census & Workforce Drives from other cities will transfer to the new city. So you could have an entire city of Commercial development without any real traffic and it would still grow to the highest growth stage you've unlocked. -

Commercial districts thrive in high traffic areas. But depending on the timing of creating that commercial district, it can become a high traffic area on its own, as Sims are drawn to the jobs it provides, and as the desirability of the district increases with the traffic flow, you will get more growth. -
Missing textures and objects after saving
xxdita replied to tomek4zielinski's topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
The fixes seem to line up with the data I've read and suggested fixes. So after well over a decade of problems being reported, hopefully Prop Pox can now be completely in the rearview mirror. There have been far too many threads similar to this one over the years. New players that have no idea how to even describe what they're seeing, much less how to search for answers. So I hope that everyone that sees this thread pays attention to the pics in the OP. I still strongly encourage everyone to use SC4Fix, because while these files have been corrected, it's impossible to say that there aren't more out there, or that there won't ever be again. -

PIMX allows all lots using a given prop or prop family to be opened at once (at least any lots that exist in folders selected upon opening PIMX). The Maxis beach umbrella is used on 17 Maxis lots. PEG's timed override of this beach umbrella as found here is likewise used on those same 17 Maxis lots. I don't know what's been changed, but the modified umbrella still overrides the Maxis prop exemplar. So it hasn't been fixed in any way. -
Missing textures and objects after saving
xxdita replied to tomek4zielinski's topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
The problem is that we're talking about a Maxis prop that has been used on Maxis lots. There's nothing wrong with the lots at all, or with the Maxis prop, only in the way the prop exemplar overrides the original Maxis prop exemplar. This prop is used on 17 Maxis lots, as well as the 4 custom lots included with the download. And who knows how many others... I have just downloaded the file in question, and though I do see an edit to the description, I don't see that any change has been made to the contents of the file in any way. The timed prop is still timed. -

The empirical evidence is rather difficult to refute. Sadly, by 'fixing' the problematic file, you have created further prop pox issues for anyone that updates to the new version, if they already have the prop in place in existing cities, even if preventing new players from having to face it. So I would encourage anyone already using the file to keep the one they have. But SC4Fix does exist. It not only inoculates players from prop pox, but can restore affected cities after the fact, as proven in this very thread. Adding a link to the dll on the updated file seems only prudent. It should be considered a dependency at this point. -
One tool that has been greatly underutilized by BATters is OverPoP's Bitmap Animation Builder. SimGoober has used it to make windmills and at least one really fun building.

I've actually seen a similar thing done with one of the Superman movie posters turned into bus stop background. It seems like you should be able to edit the actual image in order to use it as a texture for the back of the bus stop. You may need to change the image's format to import it, and crop the actual signage that you want to use.

Can we fix the dark side of the floor?
xxdita replied to carlosmarcelo's topic in SC4 - Custom Content
I don't know why the lots wouldn't be working with the original dependencies used when they were created. That doesn't make sense to me. Unless something about RRW breaks some of the original textures somehow?- 10 Replies

Missing textures and objects after saving
xxdita replied to tomek4zielinski's topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
Though there are a few different possible ways to create the prop pox, only one publicly available file has ever been confirmed to cause it, in multiple tests. You'd think that by now, the file would either be corrected for future players, or come with a warning and a link to SC4Fix so that nobody has to continue suffering this issue. -
I can be the one to say that. A properly modded library only has an EQ boost of 0.3, vs an elementary or high school's EQ boost of 24, or a private school's EQ boost of 30.

Have you installed SC4Fix? It looks like you're suffering from prop pox. There are instructions on that download page on how to correct the problem once you've installed SC4Fix. -

That one is modded as a library. Placing five of them in your city will unlock the Maxis Main Library.

The missing coco trees are located in CSX Vol 04. Not sure what else I can tell you other than to double check that you have actually installed the listed dependencies. I can't do that for you. I have checked each of the 3 files, and there are no unlisted dependencies.

GA Halloween Farm O'Lantern BSC has about 15 dependencies. Though you're probably using the older version from the STEX, the dependencies should be the same. CSX Farm Salina de Coco only requires CSX Mega Props vol 3 & 4. Not sure about the BLS Chateaux Vins. You have a link?

CAM 1.0 still requires the IHT fix installed separately. CAM 2.0 does include a version of the IHT fix. The IHT fix really has nothing to do with getting IHT to grow, though it does allow R$$$ to actually work in the jobs it provides. What pushes IHT to grow is the Workforce Drives, which you can monitor in-game by using the Census Repository's query. Along with providing high levels of education in your city and keeping pollution down, you will probably also need fire coverage and park effect in the areas you want your IHT to grow. Making sure your IHT areas have a clear route to a neighbor connection or seaport will also help it develop.

"Big City Tutorial" was mysteriously reset to original state
xxdita replied to The Angry Convert's topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
You should have two Regions folders, one at Docs/SC4/Regions and another in your game's install folder, which will depend on what version you're running (right click your SC4 desktop shortcut and open file location to find out for sure). Both of these will likely have Timbuktu folders. Making a new region is generally more stable than trying to use the tutorial. But remember to backup your work regularly, and save often. -

simcity 4 Sharing Plugins Folders - Discussion
xxdita replied to Haljackey's topic in SC4 - Custom Content
I do have a solution to simplify proper CAM installation for all users that will be introduced with the next version. But CAM v3 is still at a very early alpha phase at this point. There is still a lot of work to do before it can ever make its way to the LEX. While I won't totally rule out the possibility of another LEX DVD in the future, I think we already have too many projects going for any of us to shift focus to a DVD that would live up to our standards. -

With CAMelots specifically, the growth stages are outside of the Maxis ranges. So 9 through 15 for Res/Com, and 4 through 10 for Ind. The naming conventions of the files themselves often give an indication of this, but not always. PIMX includes RCI type, wealth (when appropriate), and lot growth stage as a default naming template for newly created lots, but people may change that as they please, or release the files as dat's. Some creators have chosen to add CAM into the filenames, some haven't. -

When multiple versions of a file are included in a single upload, we always hope that users will actual read the information as provided to make the appropriate choices for their gameplay. But the reality is that most people don't. One of my favorite features of the STEX is that it does kinda force you to make that decision before you even download. So users can be offered multiple versions for different playstyles, and only have the proper files downloaded.
