@raynev1 wow. that's why I like this post. I've got a lot of inspiration. Is that CAL-Goober canals water? I recognize the NBVC marina lots.

Nice work!

WORK IN PROGRESS --

THE JADE BIGHT II -

HOHENKIRCHEN:

(Click to make bigger.)

Yo, guys --

Working on my second city in the new region -- Hohenkirchen.

Still trying to cut down on heavy forests and open up some cleared spaces on the map to increase the realism element.  This one grew a bit bigger than expected -- 55k.  And the city footprint is a bit larger than I wanted.

The city of Hohenkirchen -- the main residential space for the next door LNG plant and industries in Schillig Roads.

Overview of the city center and main commercial zones.

3HB0mkR.jpg

An old bridge over a marshy inlet north of the city.  (Getting in some "training" for future cities.)

DH6MYfs.jpg

A detail of my first "serious" investment in the Quais De Seine embankments and the Pedmalls.  I like the embankments -- even though they have a few optical glitches in them at certain zoom levels.  But -- as someone previously mentioned -- the Pedmalls require waaaaaay too much clicking to get what you want.

In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed.  But they produced Michael Angelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, and The Renaissance.

In Switzerland, they had brotherly love and five hundred years of peace.  And what did that produce?

Nice work!

Thanks . The water is from Peg Ponds , 205 Version . Yeah , I get a lot of inspiration here too . Your work on that Seaport Project looked very nice also .

@Dreadnought  Those images look very nice , I love how you do the marshy areas . As for the pedmalls it can take many clicks to get what you want , but when you get the ones you want all together it is rewarding . I have a question about the pedmalls . Do yours change on their own while you do work near them , in my game they do and I was wondering if anybody else experiences the same .

On a side note . Did you give up on your CJ ? I found it very interesting .

Yo, raynev 1--

YES -- !!  The blasted things change any time something grows around them !!  I've gotten to the point where I plop any old Pedmall -- wait for the buildings to grow -- then go in and plop until I get the right mall.  I realize they were made that way to keep the drop-down-menu uncluttered -- but it's a REAL pain !

I also noted that I'm finding patches of "pink" mixed into the malls and sidewalks.  Anyone have any ideas why I've broken out in "pink splotches" ??

The CJ --

Yes -- I pretty much gave up on that, though I may come back to it after I've gotten 10 or 15 cities done in Jade Bight II.

I found that trying to build cities AND run a weekly CJ entry was too much like work.  You love a hobby or a new project, but let it get to feel anything like "work" -- and you begin to hate it.  Trying to keep on schedule for the CJ took time away from my city-building and my efforts to perfect and improve my "style".  I hadn't even figured out exactly "HOW" to make a railroad work for my city (can you believe it?).  I was also reluctant to stop and take the time to work on custom fillers and lots.

Either way -- I was not living up to my full potential (modest though it may be).  I'm not what you would call an inventor, nor am I very innovative -- but I like to think I take the offerings given to the community and see much I can do with them.  Sort of "Be all I can be" -- with what we've got to work with.

I'm much happier now without the "rush".  If I see an empty spot that needs something -- I may think about it for a couple of days before trying something out.  No pressure -- ya' know?

And the funny thing is -- I actually get more positive feedback on this thread than I was getting on the CJ.  Though I do miss the occasional informative dialogue from you and some other folks.  (I can hear you breathing, Odainsaker! lol-lol).  Thank The Gods you're not shy about making a comment.

On a side note -- anybody know what happened to "Big Ben's" CJ ?

As always, there are drawbacks and advantages to any way of doing something. Bear in mind Pedmalls are unique in that they are properly transit enabled. There is no way to have 20+ options without modifications inside the NAM, so it's not simply down to the reduction of menu clutter. Such variation would not have been possible any other way.

The way they work is by something called T21s. It's possible to change them so that they don't change when buildings around them do. What causes this behaviour is that there are different pedmalls for different wealth/density zones. So it's actually these changing, like with the different wealth sidewalks that is behind it. But you could change that so that they were just random and not tied to wealth/density. But the easiest solution, wait until the right buildings have appeared, make those historical, only then, do the clicking. Much like you've already come up with. Some of the best designed mods take a lot of work to implement in-game, but ultimately this one is too good IMO to pass up.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

New to the NAM? Check out my tutorials on YouTube. Latest upload: How to: RHW - MHO Roundabout Interchanges. (Nov 25).

WORK IN PROGRESS --

THE JADE BIGHT II -

HOHENKIRCHEN:

(Click to make bigger.)

Yo, guys --

I had another burst of energy late last night.  There was a large empty spot in town and didn't want any more RES or COM stuff -- so I hit on the idea of a wilderness type lake.  This one has a small beach, which allowed me to get some training in making a natural looking beach with MMP's instead of trying to use the old Maxis beaches.

Which ones are those sound barriers, Bipin? Look like very dessaturated SFBT ones, or maybe Niques (weren't those blue and red?)

BTW, so much smoothness on those curves, the grid has been completely obliterated here!

Thanks for the kind words you two - CSL inspired me to really do away with that grid by using NAM to its fullest extent, especially for suburbs. Those soundwalls are indeed Nique's.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

WORK IN PROGRESS --

THE JADE BIGHT II -

HOHENKIRCHEN:

(Click to make bigger.)

Yo, guys --

A few more pictures of Hohenkirchen and the experiments with the "Quais" and Pedmalls.

This is the north end of the main business district from the rear.  I didn't carry the embankment walls completely around the area and simply left the back open.

JWrcI5S.jpg

This is a residential area I built onto the back of the business district to fill in the vacant space.  I left it pretty much a forested area with a small rock fall on the right.

jd2RnVE.jpg

A detail shot of the marina side of the embankment walls.

O0HqtXx.jpg

Here I experimented with making the embankment walls into a split-level configuration so I could use another business district to wrap around the lower end of the marina.

Still in super beta right now though. :P Considering a plaza based variant for those that use the no sidewalk grass mods as well.  I wish there was an easier way to vary up seasonal trees without creating like 10 different lots with unique trees though. :lost:

Looks great! If you have the time, you could always create some yuuuge prop families with dozens of trees in each. As long as you don't mind (potentially) a different type of tree showing up each season, that would probably be the easiest route.

It's totally possible to create Flora Families too, which don't suffer this issue. I'd imagine for lots though, that means plopping on the 1st September being a limitation. I've yet to experiment with this since @vortext dropped the bomb about it on SC4D, but for some reason I thought flora + families weren't compatible until he confirmed otherwise.
