One thing I have always wanted in this game but never found is a pipeline bridge. Drove past one my entire life....here's that example: This crosses the Red River in SW Arkansas. Can pipeline tiles like you have here be made to cross over game water?

discovery Modifying .sc4 savegames: It IS possible!
jaredh replied to smf_16's topic in SC4 Modding - Open Discussion
wow. Just wow. I wondered when the Pox problem got fixed it might lead to savegame editing. Sure enough, here it is. This SCREAMS for a savegame editor where you can click on a building and run whatever update you want (historical, convert to growable, etc etc) for fine-tuning down to a specific lot. But big kudos @smf_16. The whole plopped res abandonment issue is really historically the biggest issue with SC4 (Pox included). Its glorious this is finally possibly fixed. bravo. -
STEX Rules Clarification and Possible Revisions Discussion
jaredh replied to T Wrecks's topic in SC4 - Custom Content
"play with" is slang in English that usually should not be read literally when used in this type of response. I'd say its especially important to do that here, since we are talking about a game which can be "played" and the language can be construed in different ways as a result of the subject matter (a game) The language here probably should be interpreted as him saying you can change/use/modify/do with as you want, especially considering the sharing phrase that immediately follows the play comment. I'd categorize this use of "play with" to be interchangeable with "mess with"....another English slang.- 141 Replies

STEX Rules Clarification and Possible Revisions Discussion
jaredh replied to T Wrecks's topic in SC4 - Custom Content
People in this thread are really not going to like what I have to say, but it goes back to the very early days of SC4 modding and its an important thing to keep in mind at all times. I've never understood the ownership fascination SimCity creators have. The most important thing that is always overlooked by everyone in this community now and going back to the beginning of SC4: You do not own or have control of anything you have created that runs in SC4. You specifically gave away all rights to Maxis the moment you created it with the BAT/Lot Editor and loaded it into their game. I'm fairly certain the EULA covers personal works that you never release to the world as well as anything released for public consumption. The gist of my post is all the content creators have (and always have had) a false sense of entitlement in the SC4 community. As far as Maxis was concerned, anything created for the game in the wild was theirs. We were adding to their game and anything we created and released was a gift to the community for its use. It was also fair game for use. They said as much in the release notes of the Lot Editor and more than a few posts back in the early days of their exchange. To me, this was (and always has been) explicit rights release by Maxis to us for us to use THEIR content as much as we want however we want. The big caveot here is everything ever made for the game belongs to Maxis and this tacit release means everything anyone has ever made can be used by anyone however they want. This argument was hotly debated going back to the old EA/Maxis lot site waaaaay back before most of you probably even knew the game existed (and in some of your cases...were alive). Its important to note that EA/Maxis never chimed in on this to my knowledge back then...and they had plenty of opportunity to do so. Just remember....you don't own it and you really don't have any say on how people use it....EA/Maxis does. How does this change your stance on this topic (and every other topic relating to SC4 content)? This was a deep philosophical issue back then and it seems it is just glossed over today as if people who create things still have any control over them.- 141 Replies

Indiana Joe and the Quest for the Ultimate Plugins Folder
jaredh replied to Indiana Joe's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Someone recently got the BSC and PEG seaports to work together with an old process that was done to blend them. As I recall, there is one magic file that was attached to a forum post that makes it all sing in harmony. It's a major loss of visual seaport eye candy to walk away from all the PEG stuff.- 87 Replies

Its very likely the intermixing of PEG and BSC ports unfortunately. Strip out ALL the PEG stuff and see if the BSC stuff works. If it does, that's your culprit. Also try making sure all the PEG stuff loads before the BSC stuff.

Windows has done this going back to at least Win 95. I am fairly certain it is a feature of X-Windows (which M$ copied to make Windows to begin with)

I don't know for sure. You might read the steam forum on the game for help while you wait for someone who does. You can always try the way the CD version works....a sub-folder My Documents. Or dig through the Steam folders for the game files. It probably has a Plugins folder in there.

It looks like you are trying to copy files onto a DVD to me.... (DVD Drive D:)

Once you cross the 65,535 barrier, it probably won't break until 2.4 billion....but they obviously could have used some unusual break in the HEX between those major breakpoints.

Remember most of these types of buildings have an lip running along the edge of the roof-line to conceal the A/C units and the discoloration of the roof. The roof is almost never square to the walls. I just did a google map satellite search in the Dallas area and saw many that are grey.

You can kill the regular updates. You can't kill the quarterly big patches unless that has changed in the last 4-6 months. The big ones can't be deferred

The way you kill telemetry in Win 10 is at your transparent corporate level home firewall that intercepts that traffic and black-holes it. Sophos UTM or PFSense will do it (I use Sophos) M$ doesn't get any telemetry from my Win10 boxes. You *CAN* block the update servers this way also....if you dare let a PC connect to the internet and not get updates. I don't play that game....I've spent far too much of my life in the corporate world dealing with infected PCs that are fully patched and still get viruses to ever let my home ones get behind. It's just far to easy to get a ransomware from a drive-by ADD that slips past an adblocker. Just a word about your firewall....if its a Netgear or TPLink etc....there is a decent change it is already a part of a botnet if you don't keep it updated religiously. If it is old enough that they have stopped patching it, get a new one....because you've likely been hacked. If you are still (insanely) using one of the old Linksys WRT54G routers (which were AMAZING back in the day) get something new immediately. Any of these left on the internet are 100% a part of a botnet as of 3 years ago...they can be owned simply by sending out a beacon to the device and it says "yes, here's my root password mr hacker!" (I'm serious, its really that easy).

This is not true of Windows 10. It will eventually download if you let it connect to the internet. You can defer for a very long time, but M$ will eventually force it down on you....ESPECIALLY if you are on Win 10 Home edition.

Question regarding the purchase of a newer computer
jaredh replied to Slow's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Its likely not really your computer anymore if it is XP and connected to the internet. Its trivial to take over XP machines with javascript injections (and a myriad other ways) at this point. Hopefully you don't have it connected to the internet. If not, no problem! If so, beware. -
Question regarding the purchase of a newer computer
jaredh replied to Slow's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
I can't stress enough that if you have a large plugin folder, an SSD will probably be the biggest speed up you can purchase and I'm quite serious. Especially a (real PCI bus speed) m.2 one. As far as version of Windows. Its time to forget 7. Its going to stop getting security patches on Jan 14, 2020 (less than 2 years out). If you want to run SC4 on 7 in a Win10 Hyper-V virtual that is not connected to the network, that's a different thing....but dealing with a pretty much forced OS upgrade in 18-20 months is not the path I would take. -
This is really well done.

good point. It probably wouldn't look right at all due to the scale. They are not very bright when lit.

@Simmer2 The big globes on the top of the gas pumps actually had lights in them (and look crazy cool when lit, that is why they are so sought after by collectors) I recall seeing them on and off overnight. The lighting on the high sign is exactly as I remember... Another thing these stations sometimes featured was a pay phone near the street with a light over it.

This is pretty much spot on for the 50s Texacos in Arkansas I remember as a child being old and grungy in the 70s. The buildings are tall because they were garages where they raised cars up. That garage is at least a 12 foot ceiling. Might be 15....I was a very little kid the last time I saw one, but the scale in my head has my mom's car up on a hydrolic lift with an adult standing UNDER it pointing to her the problem that day we got stranded on the side of the road. So it had to be very high. As far as the sign goes, who needs to see the sign when you are at the business already? The point of the sign was to be visible well down the road.
