I was actually wondering about the breakdown, and it's interesting to see. It's also worth noting though that even though reputation was introduced in 2009, no one really knew what to do with it and it wasn't actually used very often.

I personally feel like I get a lot of reputation, and right now I'm 7th overall, but I have no idea how some people get so much. For real.

Posting more pictures and less text? The chart shows no ratio between posts/likes. And I notice in average pictures or posts with pictures get more likes than plain text.

    That's true, I can see what your saying from just looking at the totals above and from going through some older well regarded CJ's that had surprisingly few reps. Aside from a slight upward blip in 2010, the numbers were quite low for the leaders until a big surge in 2013. They were down again a bit in 2015 but jumped right back up in 2016 and continue on this year so far at their highest levels yet.

    I think the reasoning for that is two fold. One it's just easier and simpler for people to click the like button rather than take the time to write up a comment. This is seemingly becoming more and more common on all sites that have such a system, especially social media sites. But I don't think that's a bad thing for this site. There are far less active users on the site today than in earlier years. Which leads me to believe that the number of comments per user hasn't gone down, perhaps that's even gone up, but the overall volume of post has gone down. "Likes" are a show of appreciation as well, in a way the increase in likes has counteracted the decrease in comments which serves to maintain a relatively consistent level of appreciation directed towards content creators.

    I'll put up a list of the top posters for those years as well but it would be hard to draw any real conclusions buy just looking at the numbers for the top 4 members.

    Thanks for taking all the time it took to gather that data. :thumb:

    And I'll make a prediction that by Dec 31, 2017 @rsc204 will take over the lead. (You heard it here first.)

    Nice job with compiling all this together! *:8)

    It is interesting to see the trend of increase with rep given over the years, and I do agree with your reasoning about the usage. Although it's always nice to see comments, rep can be quantified and used to highlight notable contributors & posted content.

    Apparently, according to this post from IPS in January, there are 'exciting' improvements planned later this year. Both to expand the rep system, along with the relatively new Leaderboard feature. Nothing else is known at this stage, although it does sound interesting. With all this data, it only needs extracting and presenting in a readable format. There's so much potential for expansion, so I'm sure these will useful additions whenever they arrive.

    Just to add:

    According to my calculations, that sounds like a very fair prediction... *:yes:

    The "RSC Rep Dec 31" Equation:

    2,739 rep required

    300 days remaining   (Funnily enough)

    = 9.13 per day
    = 64 per week
    = 278 per month

    Maintaining at this constant rate, the data convincingly proves it's more than achievable this year. And should it happen, would completely smash the record for most rep ever received in a single year (3,789+).

    Or maybe even sooner...

    Right now based on this, the top 3 this year to date are:

    @rsc204 - 1,050  (16.4 day  /  115 week  /  499 month  /  5,988 year)

    @CorinaMarie - 747  (11.7 day  /  82 week  /  355 month  /  4,260 year)

    @matias93 - 614  (9.6 day  /  67 week  /  292 month  /  3,502 year)

    So, continuing on at 16.4 per day...

    By December 31st, @rsc204 will have amassed a mighty 9,583 total rep, with the outright record (~7,400) being attained by August 20th!  *:golly:   (167 days from now)

    (Of course, all this boldly assumes our still Resident @A Nonny Moose doesn't receive additional rep from here on.)

    Woo! Third place runner! :D This site has gone mad with the like button!!

    Now, this is based on a linear extrapolation, which is reasonably accurate in the long term, but probably will be distorted in respect to intermediate lapses: if any, considering that several release milestones related to MGB's work are due to be reached in 2017 (the RRW reskin, the redistributable executable of the SWN, maybe the so-much-expected RTMT 4), the very release entries and all the subsequent tech support will surely make him to produce waves of rep points, maybe causing the record to be broken much earlier, a definitely well deserved happening!

    I like stats!

    Thanks for making this list!

    @MandelSoft made some stats about rep / posts a few years ago. For further reading I suggest you check out this thread:

    Edit: His images aren't loading anymore, boo! Still, it's an interesting thread for stats junkies!

    Well I suppose with my name being thrown around, I had to pop in and comment sooner or later.

    Of course it's nice to think that I may be heading towards some sort of record somewhere along the line, but that's never been a driving force or goal for me. Sure I've a lot of projects I hope to finally get out of the way, behind the scenes a lot of this has been completed too.

    Many thanks to all those who've supported my work one way or another.

    If I look at the 'total post' charts and look on the development over the years (leader 2009: 554 posts, leader 2016: 6367 posts) - I wonder if the 'good old days' aren't quite now.

    One things for sure, the good old days in terms of giving reputation is definitely now. The monthly leaderboard list I just finished really shows just how much it's increased in the last few months.

    It would also be neat to track not only who is receiving reputation, but who is giving it out as well.

    It may help explain why rep points have exploded this year.

    I was just thinking the same thing, I'm sure it should be a hard thing to do with the software in place. And I don't think it would be a bad thing to be high on that list, there's nothing wrong with appreciating the works of others. I'm fairly certain I'd make that list as well. *:P  Heck one could even use it as justification for nominating someone for the "Most Friendly Member" trixie.

    I remember earlier this year possibly towards the end of last year, in the Activity tab it would note when someone "liked" something but I think it was just taking up too much space in the activity stream and was shut off by an admin.   Seems like there are some options that can be checked off as to what is shown in the activity stream including people giving out rep. I doubt that reactivating it will show the history of giving out rep but if the data does exist in the stream it should be possible to pull the data out and calculate but if the site software does not sort that data it will probably take way too long for someone to do it manually.

    I thought about this, and am still thinking about it because though I've thought about this, I still have more thinking to do as to stop thinking about it would mean not to think.

    I can confirm the rep feed was disabled for the that very reason: to reduce clutter.

    Currently, the Activity stream will show all posted content, along with:

    • New member registrations
    • Profile photo changes

    As well as likes, the disabled options include when a member 'follows' either another member or posted content. So yes, not very useful, at least as a default view (the settings are either on or off, with no optional view).

    The data of who gave rep is certainly there. For any post, you can access this by using the format:

    ?do=showRepComment&comment={ID}

    Just add this to the end of a topic you're viewing, and replace {ID} with the post number (found by hovering over the Posted time).

    E.g.

    The opening post of this thread:
    https://community.simtropolis.com/forums/topic/72516-simtropolis-yearly-reputation-leaders/?do=showRepComment&comment=1657436

    To retrieve all the raw figures at once, It'd really just require an appropriate query on the database.

    ...I think this is the best thread for this?

    Anyways, I just noticed we now have 5 folks with 5 digits of rep. I find it pretty crazy how this site keeps buzzing with activity... even after 17 years!

    There's some others close to hitting this mark too, and one who is just about to hit 20k!
