Yeah, it would be remiss to forget about RVT's stuff, even if I can't use it in HD terrain due to tiling. I used it for so long, too... :'-/

This is a nice contribution, very nice.  Thank you!  It had to be a lot of work to put all those various views together, but you've done quite well. . . Well done indeed!   I've tried many of these myself through the years, working to find "the one" - hahahaha.

The only addition I'd humble suggest would perhaps be showing the mods at another closer zoom.  It would double the work, but from hard experience I know that the various zoom levels do effect some of these water mods rather dramatically.

My only real "contribution" to the information in this thread would be to add that I never found the "the one" - the perfect water for the look I wanted - at least not "straight from the box".  Many were close but not quite perfect.   Then I found that I could adjust some settings in the terrain mod I use to create exactly what I wanted.  Changing the "Water Min Alpha" setting and the "Water Depth for Max Alpha" can make a great water mod even better . . .

It did not even occur to me to check various zoom levels until I got to the ELSHA mod. I noticed the files zoomdistant.jpg and zoomier.jpg and took a look at them. I added text under my pic about there being a difference.

    It goes from:

    037_132-13-Water.jpg

    To:

    133-13b-Water.jpg

And while I do like the extra ripples and each color separately, I personally don't care for the inconsistent, dramatic color change within the mod.

As you aptly noted it would double my workload. Instead of the current 72 pics it would become 144. While I don't mind this boring, tedious task for a once thru, I just can't motivate myself to go that extra step. If you'd like to take on that task and make a thread with them zoomiered, I'd be happy to include a linky to yours in my first post. I feel what I've presented here is sufficiently better than what we didn't have before. *:P

OMG! There's a treasure trove of water mods there. Like 37 downloads later and I've got them all. That @timotheus4 was one prolific water modder. :golly:

As I have time I'll get them screenshot and edited into post 1. In other news, I have all the pics for my upcoming Beach Shoppe. I'll put it on hold while I catch up here.

Sounds great! Jeez, we can hardly thank you enough - have another Like from me as a token of my gratitude at least. And a duckie! :ducky:

I remember I once spent many, many days trying to choose a water mod that would look good...

    • in the individual map (no too obvious tiling, no garish or unsuitable colour)
    • in region view
    • in combination with the canal set and ploppable water I was using at that time

The last point was the hardest task, as plop water / in-game water transitions are terribly hard to get right in game. Depending on which ploppable water / canal / river set you use (Oppie's canals, SimGoober's canal set, callagrafx' retake on SG's set, PEG or Diggis' streams, ...), it's still a lot of work, but an overview like the one you kindly provided makes it so much easier to sort out the ones that won't work for sure and focus on the promising candidates instead.

Whew! I got them all opened and pics shot. Turns out to be 59 more images. Some of those contain multiples like Japan has 5 and Barbados has 8 and so on. Tis my bedtime now, but I'll upload and update post 1 as I get time.

    @Cyclone Boom

HELP! I've added 27 more pics but the 99th one just doesn't want to resolve itself into an image. (I pasted it. Waited and waited. Deleted it. Pasted it. Waited a while. And I tried this like 5 times. When I've had this before it usually works on the 2nd or 3rd try.) Have I hit some sort of per post limit? I still have 32 more to add. I'll hold off on them cause if they won't show up there's no point in posting them.

No worries, I've fixed it now.

Looks like it didn't convert for some reason, with it just being a link to the image:

    Before (as a link)

    <a href="https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p184/CorinaPics/39h_zpsvlkzeklr.jpg" rel="external nofollow">https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p184/CorinaPics/39h_zpsvlkzeklr.jpg</a>

    After (as an image)

    <img alt="39h_zpsvlkzeklr.jpg" class="ipsImage" src="https://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p184/CorinaPics/39h_zpsvlkzeklr.jpg">

I guess when re-pasting the URL in the editor, it still didn't resolve into an image because the editor still saw it as a formatted link. If this happens again, try removing it, then copy & paste the URL as a plain link again (from Photobucket). Or alternatively, add it using the "Insert other media" option in the bottom right of the editor.

With a post length limit, I know some forums restrict this. But I don't believe one exists here, and I've yet to personally notice it even when testing with very lengthy formatting (e.g. challenge leaderboards). Even if there is, you'd think it'd be based on the size/length of the HTML, not the visible height of the post.

As a quick test, I tried duplicating your post and it still accepted the save. So there should be room for at least another 99 pics... ;)

Ok, it's up to 131 pics in post 1 now. That's vanilla water and 129 other choices. (Yes, the math is right. There's also that underwater view.)

But, if there are more water mods out there, let me know. ;)

Or to put it another way, people like choice :). Perhaps the fact that the water textures are a relatively easy mod to create helps here. Compared to terrain mods for example, which are vastly more complex to make something that looks good. I'm sure otherwise there would be many more options for the other terrain-altering mods too.

Still 131! Who knew, that only makes Corina's work here even more impressive.

Shame we can't display two sets of images side by side, both with independent scroll bars. So you could compare two images next to each other. That's some pretty basic/archaic HTML code right there to achieve that (frames). But if you fancy an off-line version (for download) in HTML format, I'm thinking that could be very doable.

Btw, the 131 I mentioned is the number of pics in my first post. One, however, is vanilla and that's not really a choice. And another one is the underwater view without any water to show the terrain down there. ;)

Well, what's wrong with opening this thread in two separate windows and have them side by side? Peeps with 16:9 ratio monitors could prolly do it well or, like me, with dual square-ish monitors just have each window on it's own screen.

And this I personally encourage. Any (and every) one ought to do a Save As ... Complete Web Page in case my free Photobucket account ever borks the pics.

Nice with a forum thread for them all. Easily over viewed but i still can't decide on which one to pick for my little piece of heaven\hell.

I'll try PEG WATER MOD and hope it's what i want.

    Cheers

    Edit:

    Alright, done and tested it.

Only thing with this, (and i think i remember it was the same drill 16 years ago when i probably used PEG's water mod then as well), is that you'll have to load each city area individually for the color to show on the region screen.

One thing i noticed was this little color change where the old Maxis color is still there:

    sc4 water01.jpg

Otherwise it looks really nice on a map where that underwater view doesnt show.

Uhm, right. It does show but much better with that darker color overall.

And below how it looks like in the regional view with not all of it colored the same way yet.

Too bad now that it's not colored with that dark blue all over on the city map view, darn it.

    Oh well!

There are a few water mods previewed above such as from the "Drunken Water Mods" and "Gobias HD Water" packs which have custom textured sides. Try using the Find tool in browser (Ctrl+F) for jumping up to these grouped above with individual previews. The reason these have edges (and not all) is because the author took extra effort in overriding those default colours down the sides. I suspect it would be possible for editing any other water mod and adding this in, though I've not personally explored that yet.

I'm afraid it will require individually saving each city tile for the region view to update. This is because all tiles are represented by a snapshot preview, having one for the Satellite and another for the Transportation view. Both of these only get updated upon save, and I don't believe there's any quicker way to do this.

I clarified and yeah, it's all over my posts already.

    Oh well.

    *:thumb:

Edit: To anybody putting in any water mod and who's as dumb as me, remember to load the city parts again individually to get rid of the installed water mod color.

I just went into the region view and was like, "HEY! That color is still there". Can you believe it?

I will try to fix this mismatch in the deep water so it matches the surface color but don't count on it.

Mind you, (here comes boosting), i was the first to make a lot with traffic running through it, no input required.

It's if i get around to do it and to THEN have the mod makers make it a part of their mod's cause that's what counts for the community.

Would be nice to do it for other's but for myself only, i don't know.

    Good day
