Get NAM and CAM and you won't regret it!

Yo, Hetz --

I already have Nam32.  Can you give me a brief description of exactly what changes CAM will make in game mechanics?  I understand from the description that it increases the number of growth stages for the various categories.  Does it seem to effect game play dramatically?

In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed.  But they produced Michael Angelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, and The Renaissance.

In Switzerland, they had brotherly love and five hundred years of peace.  And what did that produce?

The cuckoo clock !

Edit: Feedback welcome! I feel like I'm a little stuck and I'm not sure where to go next. If anyone has any ideas, please tell me! :)

Lose the diagonal grid on the intersections, add a bunch of mobile homes/trailer parks, parking lots, chain fast food stores and drugstores, and NIMBY lots and you'll have a pretty good approximation of Yakima/Tri-Cities area towns... You can also go for flavor with "Wild West" style MMPs - old stuff from 100+ years ago is everywhere in the countryside in this area.

I will maybe be able to post pictures on my MD soon :D

Where did you get the station at the bottom?

That's Flinders Street Station in Melbourne, Australia, a modular terminus made by Reddonquixote:

Be sure of reading the manual thoroughly before assembling it!

... My main source of inspiration is Yakima, Washington.

The Palm Springs of Washington!  Been there many times... I would suggest more parking lots and one story commercial sprawl (fast food joints, generic strip malls, etc).  Did you include a river in the geography of you town?  If so you could include a greenway and arboretum for parks.  And don't forget Miners!

Thanks to everyone for the tips!

Parking lots: check! I often put many of them in the more generic ones of my cities, so that's no problem. :)

Trailer parks. Hmm. I'd love to, but it's hard for me to get them right. Neither SC4's vanilla resources or custom content from the internet seems to do the trick for me. All the trailers seem to end up too far apart. The obvious solution would be to go lot editing, but I don't have the patience/creative skills required for such a vast undertaking. If anyone else would feel like it (doesn't SimCoug quite enjoy lotting? ;)) I would be very happy. :)

Strip malls. Again, hmm. Not many of them available. I do know Bipin is working on a set of modular strip malls (by my request) so naturally, I'll use those whenever they become available.

River. Yup! The very reason I opted for Yakima as an inspiration is that the region has strong geographical similarities (albeit slightly squashed) with the area, so a greenway is definitely on the list. Arboretum? Not quite sure, but we'll see.

Again thanks for all the tips. I'll come back whenever I feel ready to show my progress. :)

Sim Goober has some Trailer parks that are pretty good, I do think if you can relot JMeyers(?) CS$ you could possibly make some "Stripmalls"

What a wonderful surprise! Where did you find those BATs? :D

The models are by SimGoober and NiagaranEagle ... I just modded them into prop families and came up with a few lots.  I'll have a more ironed out set to show soon.

@SimCoug They look really nice . Will they be headed to the STEX by chance ?

Never mind the question , had a brain fart . Thanks for sharing the links .

Starting up a new region today, and you cant have sims move in without electricity! I've been working on constructing the Coleman Nuclear Power Plant. Subsidized by the federal government, this massive 3 reactor plant will provide electricity to the entire region.

That looks nice but it doesn't seem to make the most sense to have it right at the bottom of a cliff. What if there's a rock slide or avalanche? Also, I bet that would be really expensive to remove part of the mountain for this nuclear power plant, when it could easily be placed somewhere flatter.

keeping with the critics: mind that nuclear plants need a body of water close to it, allowing to refrigerate the internal fluid circuits and avoid overheating.

Well the indent in the mountain was already there and flattened for me. I did have to push the mountain back a few tiles to make it fit, but not much else in the way of terrain modifying was done. I hadnt considered potential Avalanches however.

There is a large river roughly 8km away with a flow rate of roughly 6500 cubic metres per second. My plan was to pump the water from the river up to the plant. Im not an expert on nuclear energy though, so Im not sure if this will be sufficient. If not, I might have to rethink my location for the plant

At worst there's still meltwater from the snowcapped mountains.  6,500 cubic meters per second is quite the generous river--a good example of a flow rate of this order is the Ohio River.   7,960 cubic meters per second at its confluence with the Mississippi.  This river has a huge amount of thermal power plants (mainly coal and natural gas) along its banks, so it has well above the necessary water to provide cooling for their waste heat.

I'm not a total expert myself, but in most of the pictures I've seen of nuclear fission plants, they are usually sitting right next to a body of water (preferably one that is not prone to extensive flooding). I'm sure a pump would work as well, although I suspect it would be a complex system with a lot of fail-safes, since we've been shown in real life how well a fission plant handles a lack of water being supplied to its rods/cells. The problem with them is that unlike more standard and primitive power plants, they aren't as easy to "shut down." I suspect placing it not far from the bank might work, although you'd probably want a wall of some sort to protect it if the water level rose at all, as that could risk introducing radioactive material into the river and the environment around it.

One common strategy to place any thermal power plant next to a major body of water (river, major lake, sea or marshland) is to provide levees sufficiently tall to prevent the entrance of water from extremely large flood events (500-1000 year mean time of recurrence).  Alternatively it's possible to find a somewhat more elevated ground still close to the body of water , such that flood protection measures don't have to be as onerous.

Concerning nuclear power plants the biggest flaw Fukushima Daichi had was having the emergency/back-up equipment located within the tsunami's flood zone.  Not being able to keep safety systems of the plant because the flood took the emergency power source was what caused the big mess there.

I appreciate the feedback, this is the first time I've decided to go with 1 large power facility to cover an entire region. Im probably going to leave it as is for now, because it will help me start to seed the region with some towns and farmland. I will most likely revisit it later and find a new home for it once I get my infrastructure network set up and my core cities start to grow.

Here's a disclaimer.  Unless your region is comparatively small or compact, not even three SimPEG nuclear reactors will suffice to provide all cities with power.  For small or medium cities it'll be okay, but not for the truly big ones (several large city districts past 100,000 inhabitants).  It might as well be possible that you need to set up another facility like this one later on.

This is the clubhouse resort area of a new country club: this part weighs in at 22x20 tiles, but the modular pieces will be much smaller.

Given that it takes up a lot of space, I have modded it to provide jobs and a health boost (in addition to the usual country-club benefits)

I saw you post that on SC4D.

May I make a small suggestion though?

If so, is there a chance you can make a version that's used as a small College, University or other academic building?

This is ABSOLUTELY some fabulous stuff !!!

Your reputation precedes you, Sir -- and this does not disappoint.

It reminds me of the casino / resort Sinatra used to own up on Lake Tahoe!!  Really great stuff !!  Detail is superb!

This is awesomly awesome!! The buildings, the huge lot, the whole concept. Definitely a work to be remembered.

The only thing I would ask is, if the lot (or lots) will include a Diggis' pond, to have at least one open, to be connected to a larger pond or lake, for better integration. Otherwise, one could always use a small lot with the buildings and to plop all the rest.

Anyway, a fantastic resort.:ohyes:
