I couldn't find ploppable embankments that were quite what I wanted, so I have been checking out different MMP ballast rocks for elevated heavy rail embankments. I'm using RVT Extra Lifters to get the 15.5m height correct, and Rivit's texture mods for the viaducts.

Here, NBVC Dark Stones on the left and Grey Stones on the right. I favor both looks but figure darker will be best in industrial areas, lighter for residential or commercial.

XKooX3n.jpg

If anyone knows of ploppable embankments with this look, I'd love to hear about them.

Another side-by-side, this one for wetter woodland areas: JRJ TC Moistured Small Rocks on the left, VIP Mossy rocks on the right.

This shot also shows a double-height embankment (31m), which I created by using a 3-tile 15.5m embankment as the base for a normal 1-tile 15.5m embankment. Roads create Maxis-tunnels in the 31m embankments, which is handy.

uKgyHV4.jpg

Here, the double height 31m embankment is intersected by a 8m sunken railway. I like the effect of the rock face around the tunnel portals (PEG Rock Mod II Mossy Granite). Slope mod is Ennedi's Mountain version, terrain seems to still be default Maxis.

4XrEuHF.jpg

After noticing that I hadn't yet installed a terrain controller, I tested the Olympic Terrain Controller. It is a good match for my existing Cascadia Tree Controller. By default the Olympic Terrain Controller installs optional beach and cliff texture mods. I'm already using B98 Beach Extend and RVT Coastal Mod, which work well with default Maxis terrain.

Unfortunately, testing with Olympic beach mod removed shows jaggies on the coastline; I'll need to test some more with permutations of Olympic beach enabled, beach extend/RVT coastal disabled. All the combinations I could think of to test show incompatibility with Olympic terrain controller and RVT coastal, which means I'll need to find a water mod compatible with Olympic terrain if I want to use it (PEG Brigantine?).

With Olympic defaults, the cliff now appears as brown rock, equivalent to one of the PEG mods but overriding the old Mossy Rock appearance... here is how this all looks.

xdbcb11.jpg

As a side note, 15.5m sunken does not seem possible on sea level land. One could create large plateau areas to feature deep sunken railway systems.

In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed.  But they produced Michael Angelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, and The Renaissance.

In Switzerland, they had brotherly love and five hundred years of peace.  And what did that produce?

The cuckoo clock !

Be patient. Sometimes you won't get feedback for several days, and your post has only been up half a day.

However, I do love the rock and MMP work on the shoreline! The seawalls are great and you've blended vanilla and custom well. I do have a few suggestions:

Get the RRW mod. It will make your rails look fantastic. The IRM will also give you some custom filler lots for industrial areas, look into these two mods and it will make your already good port fantastic.

Your pictures are nice, however if you would like to receive more comments, you should consider your own city journal. From what I see, they are regularly promoted on the homepage. Even my own project thread goes quiet every once in a while even after a new update is posted.

@Dreadnought great work there, very realistic sprawl for industrial facilities. The tank truck filling stations really draw you in! It could be an illustration for a textbook.

A few comments:

- Hide interface with minimize button/interface hiding mods and take screenshots with Ctrl-Shift-S, it gives even more immersion.

- RRW will not fit with your NCD Railway textured lots, as you must already know. I think the NCD switches look great on this type of lot though - a lot of prototypical industrial rail has compact layout.

- A few dirty industrial facilities and hermit shacks/MMPs around will really polish off those maps!

Yo, CT14 --

Thanx very much for the kind words...and for the tip on the camera controls (been trying to figure that one out).

Yeah, I rather favored the NCD rail.  And I found that it's user-friendly for customizing siding lots.  The steam trains on the industrial sidings are a favorite of mine.  (Sc4 is a lot like a train set on a computer -- and you know what they say about men and their trains!) (lol-lol)

I do use T-Wrecks' IRM filler lots, but I passed on his IRM package.  I already have a bunch of mod's on this game system and I'm nervous about over-loading my operating system -- so I have to pick and choose what I can use.  I'm still kind of a "newbie" at this, and I try to make the most of what skills I do have.

I composed the truck filling stations out of NBVC piping and the CDK3 basic docks.  They seemed to go together well and the docks provide some jobs to offset all this eye-candy.

The industrial sprawl comes from a very logical system I use to set up industrial areas.  I get Google satellite shots of the industry in question to get an idea of the physical appearance.  I use Wikipedia to figure out how the raw product flows through a facility.  Then I get pics off Google to tell me what the various pieces of equipment look like.  I draw up a rough diagram of the plant on a piece of terrain that will fit -- then open the game and go to work.  Any pieces of the industrial plant that I can't find in the game, I go in and do a custom lot that looks like the real stuff.  If you use realistic input, you'll come out with a fairly realistic industrial (but you better have the room for it -- the small maps are a real pain).

What kind of MMP's do you recommend?

Again -- Thanx for the comments and encouragement.  It's nice to know that my stuff is actually worth looking at. :thumb:

I use Wikipedia to figure out how the raw product flows through a facility.

That is a talent! You make it sound simple.

For MMPs these are some of my favorites:

- SFBT Mayor Mode Ploppables (https://www.sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=2304)

- Peg MTP Mayor Menu Logging Scenes, etc (https://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/20895-peg-mtp-mayor-menu-logging-scenes/)

- NBVC Rocks and Stones (https://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/27092-rock-n-stones/)

- Chrisadams RRP Pasture Flora (https://www.sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1886)

- VIP Rural Pack (https://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/26806-vip-ruralpack/)

There is also this list, some links are out of date but it's still a good reference:

Yo, guy --

Thank you for the recommendations, sir.

I already have the SFBT and NBVC.  I'll look into the other 2 and check Marsh's list as soon as I can.

Thanks, again --

Yo, airman --

I've been thinking about a "city journal" -- the thought kind of appeals to me.  But I've been putting it off because I'm afraid it might take a lot of work to keep the thing interesting.  OR -- I could simply be taking the idea too seriously and need to dive in and see if it swims.

For the start of the city journal you don't need very advanced things. My first CJ entry was 3 pictures and description for it that's all so it shouldn't be too time consuming.

Yo, Abrams --

I looked at a couple of the "city journal" entries just to see what other people were doing, and I'm a bit perplexed.  There don't seem to be any rules, requirements, or guidelines for the thread -- and no particular format for posting in that category.

Am I missing a "CJ Moderator's Note" somewhere?

Or -- is this a....."it's your imagination -- roll with it!"......kind of thread??

Yo, Abrams --

Thanx for the speedy reply!

Well, it's nice to know that I won't be violating any sort of protocols on the thread.

AND -- of course, you are right  -- everything must be strictly "in good taste".  As the English would say -- "One must always observe the rules of proper society, old boy".

I think I will absolutely open a thread in "CJ" in the next couple of days.  I want to make sure all my "ducks are in a row" before I jump into it.

I've got to find a new photo host before I start up.  I used "ImageVenue" some years back, but as "rsc204" pointed out, their pop-up ads have gone to the dark side since those days -- no longer suitable for the younger members on this site.

Any recommendations?

Just out of curiosity -- is your "handle" a reference to something you used to ride?

AND -- you are "steel on target", Dude.  IMGUR is a whole lot better than photobucket -- no ads to wade through or video to mess with while loading images.

THANK YOU FOR THE TIP!!

And thanx to you and Airman -- I just opened my city journal: The Jade Bight.

Sorry about that --

A "handle" is American slang for a nickname used in a variety of places -- such as forums or on short-wave CB Radios used by long-haul truck drivers (Smokey & The Bandit ring a bell?).

I thought you might be either active or retired US Army -- (ABRAMS main battle tank).  I'm always looking for military brethren and I sometimes jump to the wrong conclusions.  I should have looked more closely at your avatar -- Hussars ?

Yo, gviper --

Thanx very much for the kind words.

Throw a couple pics up here and let us see what you came up with.  I luuuuv to look at new pics!  And I'm always looking for inspiration -- and new content.

I spent about two months downloading masses of content in preparation for my shift into "realism" mode.  In my "vanilla period" I completely ignored railroads and industry, and only paid token attention to seaports.  I have seen the error of my ways!  Some of that stuff is God-awful hard to find -- but IT'S THE BEST !!! Somy is a master craftsman.

Keep an eye on my "CJ" -- you're going to see a bunch of stuff in the coming weeks.  The LNG Is probably going to be Entry #4 -- with more to come.  I try to put an "anchor" industry in every city and at least one seaport in every ocean map.  I just finished re-lotting the Jaimison Coal & Coke docks for my current city project.

Just out of curiosity -- specifically -- what did you think of the Battleship Refit Pier??  Any suggestions?

Yo, Abrams --

I have always been partial to naval history and particularly to the big-gun battleships.  Most of the articles I write are on naval history -- well -- at least 2/3 of them.  That's one reason you see that battleship dock among the pictures I posted.  I'm working on a massive expansion of the Sc4 Naval forces.

But by trade, I was a "tanker" in the Army.  I rode Sheridan M551's, M60-A2's, M60-A3's and they were up-grading to M60-5's when I got out.  My first year in the Army I even got to run some old M-60's in Southeast Asia.  And I spent my last 4 months doing some of the early gunnery tests on the M-1 Abrams.  I'm telling you, that tank will do everything except brew your coffee.

If it could scramble eggs in the morning, I would have married it!

Gotta run -- :thumb:

Keep an eye on my "CJ" -- you're going to see a bunch of stuff in the coming weeks.  The LNG Is probably going to be Entry #4 -- with more to come.  I try to put an "anchor" industry in every city and at least one seaport in every ocean map.  I just finished re-lotting the Jaimison Coal & Coke docks for my current city project.

Just out of curiosity -- specifically -- what did you think of the Battleship Refit Pier??  Any suggestions?

I will be attempting to compile some images of the port for an upcoming entry in my city journal. Somy's work is awesome. I love the fact that it looks good at night as well. Might be easy to leave industry without some lighting love but Somy didn't. Took some help from forum friends and members to track down some of it.

Battleship refit pier?

YUP --1

Go back up the page to my pictures -- it's the last one.  This is a re-lot turned into a major project.  A battleship refit pier (used to modernize and refit large warships as they wear out or technology needs upgrading), workshops, new piers, and a rail layout with custom stuff.

I would especially appreciate your opinion.

Gonna go check out your CJ!

Thanx --

In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed.  But they produced Michael Angelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, and The Renaissance.

In Switzerland, they had brotherly love and five hundred years of peace.  And what did that produce?

The cuckoo clock !

(Harry Lime to Holly Martins...Graham Greene's THE THIRD MAN...1949)

I have been working on this camping park... Some suggestions? I don't really like the house :S:S:S. Do you guys have a more japanese house to use here, that would be coherent with the overall scene?

Thanks!

Underrated post, I love the scene. I know how much effort and attention to detail these things require. Maybe some motorhomes would still complement it, this looks like the sort of place where they'd show up.

Been meaning to ask you before, but what MMPs are you using for dirt and gravel pathways and the like? They seem to be a lot more precise and tolerant than what I'm using at the moment.

Thanks! I had motorhomes on the previous pics. This spot is supposed to be the entrance to the park... I am still working on the "camping" per se part. But anyway, some motorhomes would also look nice there, you do have a point and thanks for the suggestions :)

Is it this one?
