Hi, all! Boy, does it feel good to be back. The nights spent city building while ST was down were pretty dark and foreboding... much like Gotham! This is a re-posting of my previous entry from March, but unfortunately, I didn't save what was written. I thought I would have more downtime at work this week, but that turned out not to be the case. So, I'm going to just showcase the buildings and landmarks, without the stories about the lives of everyday Gothamites. Hope you still enjoy!

I'd like to help however I can. I don't think I have many files downloaded from that time period, but I can still process and verify whatever's needed. I should have a lot of downtime from work this week, so please let me know!- 63 Replies

This City Deserves A Better Class of Criminal
Mister J posted a City Journal entry in GOTHAM PROJECT
“Gotham City. Clean shafts of concrete and snowy rooftops. The work of men who died generations ago. From here, it looks like an achievement. From here, you can’t see the enemy…” - from Batman: Year One Happy Holidays to all! I hope the new year brings plenty of great city building to everyone out there. It's been a long hiatus and I'm glad to finally be able to post the last few entries of this project after 3 years of corrupt mayoring. A year and a half ago I got a promotion and started working long hours, barely finding the spare time to chip away at Gotham, but I'm proud to say that Stage 3 is finally complete! So, here it is... Beginning of Stage 3 End of Stage 3 City of the Clouds Something is rising in Gotham — and it’s not just the hopeless crime rates. It’s black steel, cold concrete, and stained glass as far as the eye can see. The skyline has changed dramatically into endless blocks of towering structures. But as buildings climbed toward the heavens, the residents plummeted deeper into hell. Midtown Financial District Tricorner Downtown Uptown I wasn't able to stick with my original goal of growing it as a real-world mega-city would evolve. It would have taken even longer than 3 years, but I'm still happy with the end result. I did hit my mark of a population of 12 million Sims, so there's that. Crime Levels and GCPD Corruption Scandals Crime in Gotham City has reached record highs. Armed robberies, gang violence, and organized crime are spreading through nearly every district, overwhelming the city’s already strained police force. Behind the statistics lies a deeper problem: corruption inside the Gotham City Police Department itself. Recent investigations have uncovered officers taking bribes, leaking information to crime bosses, and sabotaging evidence for internal cases. Public trust in law enforcement has evaporated and the underworld grows larger every year. As the GCPD struggles to clean up its own ranks, criminals are taking full advantage of the chaos, leaving Gotham to pay the price. Now, City Hall faces mounting pressure to restore order and many Gotham residents are left wondering if anyone can still be trusted to protect them. GCR Public Transit The last train tracks were laid out in the early 20th Century after years of construction delays, budget slashing, and political setbacks. But despite its challenges, the GCR Public Transit became a crown jewel of Gotham - a sleek, flowing artery running above and below the city’s filthy streets. Now the train platforms have become just another den of crime and urban decay, but when those subway doors opened for the first time, people’s faces lit up with hope. They now had a modern, efficient transportation system connecting neighborhoods that had long felt cut off. The brand-new trains hummed with promise, the clean tunnels gleamed with electric light, and for a brief moment the city seemed – decent.- 2 Comments

Gotham is back with a BOOM! A population boom, that is. From 1850 to 1910, waves of immigrants docked on Gotham's port, and the city swelled by 600%. Three and half million people now call Gotham home... most live in terrible slum tenements and the corrupt city government does little to provide vital services. Some turn to crime out of desperation... (Gotham in 1910) (Typical slum neighborhood) (Crime levels have reached triple-digits) With the turn of the 20th century, Gotham spent a large sum of tax dollars to bring the city into the modern age with paved roads. Still nothing compared to the millions piling up in the coffers from overtaxing and slashing budgets, but city planners foresaw that the only way for Gotham to expand upward would be to improve the streets so that its citizens could move about faster. Gotham’s next major city public works project will be an expansive network of subways and elevated rail lines connecting all districts to each other. No small task, but a necessary one for any blossoming mega-city. The Gotham City Rail (G.C.R.) plans to open it's stations by the year 1935. (G.C.R. projected layout plan for public transportation) Inspirations for G.C.R.

Hey there, Has anyone else had this problem where in the profile of My Sim mode all of them are indefinitely unemployed? The Sims don't disappear after awhile, so they're not truly unemployed or else you'd get the prompt that they are leaving your city for better prospects. It seems like this is a bug, but I'm not sure if this is a plugin causing this or what. Does anyone know any solutions to fix this problem?

I completely agree, sejr99999! I know, right?! They've already risen up in revolt several times over my dystopian conditions for Gotham. If only there was a billionaire willing to dress up in a funny costume and fight the discontents one by one with his bare fists Thank you both for your comments; always appreciated, and I'm glad you enjoyed it!- 3 Comments

Happy Halloween, Simtropolis Community! (Credit: Concept art on Batman '89 by Nigel Phelps) The title for this GOTHAM City Journal entry is taken right from the opening action description of the 1989 "Batman" screenplay by Sam Hamm. "Gotham City. The City of Tomorrow: stark angles, creeping shadows, dense, crowded, as if hell had erupted through the sidewalks." I've been working on expanding the city, but have hit a few walls. My intention was to cover the three main islands of Gotham with nothing but dirty industry, but the demand for I-D keeps dropping. The first time this happened, I built railroads to provide some relief, but then it happened again. I think because I introduced education coverage to boost commercial office demand, now a majority of my Gothamite Sims are too smart to want to work in dirty, polluting, unsafe factories. I have a huge demand for manufacturing, so I just started lowering the high taxes that was keeping it at bay and will continue to expand the population of Gotham. I'm more than halfway to the first million residents! Gotham mid-1800s Population: 685,934 Holy pollution, Batman! This is what an average neighborhood looks like in 19th-century Gotham: My main objective for this project still remains to create the conditions for high levels of crime throughout the city. Murder, riots, and robberies are already widespread! (And for some reason, the citizens of Gotham still choose to call it home) Two unsolved murders in the same year on Tricorner Island! Does Gotham City have its first serial killer on the loose?! The GCPD suited up in full riot gear to break up the gangs of thugs that have overrun the streets. Trying to stay within the timeline of Gotham's fictional history, I'll continue to expand until all cities reach the year 1910, or 275 in-game years, and then begin to zone for high-density skyscrapers!

THE HOPE OF GOTHAM I'm working on a project recreating Gotham City in SC4. I know that several people have made CJ's about Gotham before (shout out to SpecialEddie, wish I could see the photos in your posts), but I plan on trying a different take on an old idea: building the region in 3 stages, starting at Gotham's founding date of 1635. GOTHAM circa 1635 Population: 0 Map credit to Hamish. I've altered a few things such as the width of Gotham River and added the islands of New Gotham to the East, Amusement Mile in the North Western corner, and the infamous Narrows situated between Downtown and Midtown. I'm basing the street grid off of this Gotham City map by AspieCrow Stage 1 will be Gotham from 1635 to 1790, or 155 years in each city, and will focus on the street layout and agriculture. There will be a few condensed areas mainly around the ports of Gotham with low-income residents. In Old Gotham, the wealthy Five Founding Families settled near what will one day become Grant Park. As time goes on, they eventually scatter throughout the 5 boroughs of the city. My hope is to build Gotham as a real-world megacity would evolve: from agriculture (Stage 1) to dirty industry (Stage 2) to skyscrapers (Stage 3) over the course of nearly 400 years (from 1635 to the present day). After Gotham's founding, farms spread on the islands and around the coasts, laying the network of dirt roads that will one day become the mean streets of this crime-ridden city. GOTHAM in the 1700s. Stage 1 will be completed at the end of the 18th century. The first factory in America was built in 1790, and that's when I'll introduce dirty industry on a large scale and watch the population skyrocket! Stage 2 will be from the 1800s to the beginning of the 20th century. A sprawl of only medium-density Victorian architecture and large factories will dominate the landscape. The inspirations for this are "Gotham By Gaslight" and "Gates of Gotham". This will be where I focus on creating the slums and conditions where widespread crime will fester. Stay tuned for the outcome of Stage 2 and then, the final stage, which will consist of art deco architecture and endless skyscrapers!

New Post! Still expanding Stage 2 to cover Downtown, Midtown, and Uptown with dirty industry, but it's proving to be harder than it sounds!

THE MEAN STREETS OF GOTHAM I've focused on naming all the main streets based on the map in the first post. I've placed Signpost markers for the dirt paths on the city's edges and at intersections, for now. As time goes on, they will all be upgraded to cobblestone roads ubiquitous in the 19th century, and finally, to the contemporary asphalt one-way roads, streets, and avenues that are rife with crime. For some of the streets, I either had to change or create new names because the scale of the region didn't exactly fit the map. So far, I've only expanded Stage 2 of my Gotham project on the small Tricorner Island, but the region's population has already swelled to a little over 300k. The next step is to stop all cities during the year 1835, or approximately 200 in-game years, to build an extensive network of Victorian-Era railroads. (One of the opening shots of "Gotham By Gaslight", a great animated film that blends two things I love: 19th-century architecture and the city of Gotham) Lastly, the three main parts of Gotham (Downtown, Midtown, and Uptown) are still not populated enough to be overrun with crime, but I expect that to change with the train network connecting all parts of the city. So far, the most congested pockets are leveling out at a little over 70 crimes a month. My goal is to raise those numbers to triple digits. But in the Tricorner area which I'm using as a template for how I want the rest of the city to look for Stage 2, we already have some pretty unhappy agents of chaos!

THE FIVE FOUNDING FAMILIES The Five Founding Families have ruled over Gotham City since the 18th century. At first, they all lived in a tight-knit community in Old Gotham. After the American Revolutionary War, the families spread throughout Gotham's boroughs and exerted their influence on its development. None had more influence and power than The Wayne Family. They started out in Old Gotham like the rest, but sometime in the mid-1700s settled in the upper-class township of Bristol, just across the Gotham River. The Waynes would go on to own countless properties and businesses in Gotham City, the most well-known being Wayne Tower, at its center. The Wayne Family's territory is Uptown & Bristol. Their nearest neighbors were The Elliot Family, ancestors of the deranged and dangerous Thomas Elliot aka Hush. The Elliot Family's territory is Midtown & Bristol. Just south of the Wayne and Elliot estates were The Kane Family, of which several streets and institutions would be named after in Gotham. The Kane Family's territory is Tricorner Island & South Bristol. The Arkham Family purchased the entire island nestled between Uptown and Midtown and built their manor there, which would later be donated and turned into the infamous Arkham Asylum. Their territory is solely Arkham Island. And finally, The Cobblepot Family refused to leave Old Gotham and generations continued to live in their decrepit mansion until their eventual downfall. The family fell into ruin, but would one day make a surprising comeback through Gotham's seedy underworld by the descendent, Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin... The Cobblepot Family's territory is Downtown & Old Gotham. Gotham City circa 1775 during the American Revolutionary War. Pop: 166,637 The population has more than doubled since the beginning of the 1700s and will again see another boom during the Industrial Revolution. The War of Independence sparked a wave of industrial innovation in America. The economy would shift from what was mostly agriculture and artisans to the large, dirty factories of the 19th century. The rolling green pastures and creaky windmills would soon be replaced by loud and polluting coal power plants and factories. The ports of Gotham would change from old slums of two-story wooden tenements to six-story red brick apartments, packing even more poor souls tightly together and in unsanitary conditions. It is in this environment where the first Gothamite career criminals will be born. !!!!!!BREAKING NEWS!!!!!! We have our first arsonist trying to burn down the city of Gotham! Could it be the early work of Firefly? (One of Gotham's lesser-known villains) In other news, there's also a serial Flasher on the loose, apparently, so you know... watch out for that guy...

Thanks, kschmidt! It is a really big region, and I'm trying to cover all 3 major islands of Gotham with medium-density buildings and dirty industry for a 19th century look, but it's turning out to be a really long process. There are so many square blocks to fill, but when I finally do I'll post another entry to show my progress. Then, skyscrapers skyscrapers skyscrapers... I'm going to try and hit around 12 million population in the end. Hopefully... We'll see!

[low guttural voice] Thursday, October 13th. Two months of recreating Gotham have turned me into a nocturnal animal... It's a big city. I can't zone everywhere... Lately, I've been focusing on naming all the main streets based on the map in the "About this CJ". But in the Tricorner area which I'm using as a template for how I want the rest of the city to look for Stage 2, we already have some pretty unhappy agents of chaos! So if the area that I've expanded so far is any indication, 1) the entire region's population will be well over a million people, and 2) Gotham City will be crawling with crime, riots, and urban decay!

I like how it's from the perspective of an investigative journalist with a crew. The "Walk Your Butt Younger" VHS tape... I really enjoyed reading, so thank you for sharing! It takes a big imagination to come up with all these backstories, and it's really well written.

I didn't think about Alfred, but that makes sense! I was rewatching my favorite cartoon as a kid "Batman: The Animated Series" and in an episode, someone says at the corner of Broome and Finger (both DC comic writers), and that intersection is actually in the map I'm using as a reference. For the rest of the side streets without names, I'm going to just number like the grid system in New York.

Thank you! Oh, and the sore throat cleared up haha Fun fact about Gotham: most of the streets, land features, rivers, and bridges are named after real people that had an influence on the creation of Batman like the comic artists, writers, and actors who played characters in all the films. Also, a lot of the towns are named after places in England, like Bristol, Somerset, and Burnley, for some reason.
