Happy Halloween, Simtropolis Community! (Credit: Concept art on Batman '89 by Nigel Phelps) The title for this GOTHAM City Journal entry is taken right from the opening action description of the 1989 "Batman" screenplay by Sam Hamm. "Gotham City. The City of Tomorrow: stark angles, creeping shadows, dense, crowded, as if hell had erupted through the sidewalks." I've been working on expanding the city, but have hit a few walls. My intention was to cover the three main islands of Gotham with nothing but dirty industry, but the demand for I-D keeps dropping. The first time this happened, I built railroads to provide some relief, but then it happened again. I think because I introduced education coverage to boost commercial office demand, now a majority of my Gothamite Sims are too smart to want to work in dirty, polluting, unsafe factories. I have a huge demand for manufacturing, so I just started lowering the high taxes that was keeping it at bay and will continue to expand the population of Gotham. I'm more than halfway to the first million residents! Gotham mid-1800s Population: 685,934 Holy pollution, Batman! This is what an average neighborhood looks like in 19th-century Gotham: My main objective for this project still remains to create the conditions for high levels of crime throughout the city. Murder, riots, and robberies are already widespread! (And for some reason, the citizens of Gotham still choose to call it home) Two unsolved murders in the same year on Tricorner Island! Does Gotham City have its first serial killer on the loose?! The GCPD suited up in full riot gear to break up the gangs of thugs that have overrun the streets. Trying to stay within the timeline of Gotham's fictional history, I'll continue to expand until all cities reach the year 1910, or 275 in-game years, and then begin to zone for high-density skyscrapers!

Simtropolis 1st Annual Halloween Map Contest
SIM-ple Jack posted a topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
The S.H.A.A.T.S. Club is proud to announce it's first(hopefully not last) event, a contest to test the skill and artistry of our many talented members. This year's theme- Dracula's castle. Simply, create a scene with Drac's hangout in one or all styles. Categories will then be voted on by all available members who wish to do so. The entries will be judged by scene assembly and craftsmanship, atmosphere, and faithfulness to the category. I have excluded myself from the contest. Cori and CB can decide whether to allow moderators to participate. You can use the Drac castle pictured(sorry, kind of diminutive in the pic) or assemble a castle from the sets floating around the STEX. Or even make one out of the landscape. City size or if you want to do a whole region, that's entirely up to you. I've uploaded the Transylvania region for use too- The 3 categories are as follows- Expressionist Black and White: glorious monotone ala Nosferatu and Bela Lugosi. Sepia counts too. Hammer Time: Rich, vibrant Technicolor ala Chris Lee Quirky, retro, ornate: Gary Oldman overdone opulence. There are 3 chances to win, and 1 over-all winner. 2nd and 3rd place winners will receive silver and bronze fangs(or coffins, I haven't decided yet ). 1st place will receive Bela Lugosi's medallion from the 1931 classic.* Entries should be posted in this thread by midnight October 25th. Voting polls will begin on the 26th thru midnight of the 29th. Winners will be announced on Halloween, the 31st. Maybe CB can whip up one of his poll tabulators like he did last year. Be on your "A" game. Korver might have entries. *a badge under your ava, not the actual medal. -

It is a national monument and landmark in Romania. The fortress is on the Transylvanian side of the historical border with Wallachia. Commonly known outside Romania as Dracula's Castle, it is often erroneously referred to as the home of the title character in Bram Stoker's Dracula. There is no evidence that Stoker knew anything about this castle, which has only tangential associations with Vlad the Impaler, voivode of Wallachia, the putative inspiration for Dracula. Dutch author Hans Corneel de Roos proposes as location for Castle Dracula an empty mountain top, Mount Izvorul Calimanului, 2,033 metres (6,670 ft) high, located in the Calimani Alps near the former border with Moldavia. Stoker's description of Dracula's crumbling fictional castle also bears no resemblance to Bran Castle. The castle is now a museum dedicated to displaying art and furniture collected by Queen Marie. Tourists can see the interior on their own or by a guided tour. At the bottom of the hill is a small open-air museum exhibiting traditional Romanian peasant structures (cottages, barns, water-driven machinery, etc.) from the Bran region. Vlad III Dracula, better known as Vlad the Impaler, was ruler of Wallachia on and off from 1448 to 1476. Other than being colloquially known as the inspiration for Bram Stoker's titular character in the novel Dracula, Vlad III is known for committing brutal acts of war. In his reign he was under constant threat of attack from both Ottoman and Hungarian forces. During an infamous retreat from Ottoman forces, Vlad III had the bodies of his enemies and his citizens alike impaled on large spikes in the field surrounding his country. Not only did his fondness for impaling his victims earn him the nickname "Vlad the Impaler", it also ensured his survival during the retreat, as the Ottoman forces returned home after seeing the grotesque scene Vlad III had prepared for them. Though many myths have been connected to Vlad III in connection with the Dracula myth, most historians agree that Vlad III Dracula never set foot in Castle Bran. Castle Bran was neither a friendly place for Vlad III to visit, nor was it under his rule. The castle was linked to Vlad III for various reasons. The castle had long been one linked to his imprisonment after he was captured by the Hungarians in 1462. It was believed that he was imprisoned in Castle Bran, but historians now conclude that Vlad III was actually imprisoned in a fortress in Budapest. It is said by historians that Castle Bran was chosen to be the colloquial location of Vlad III's imprisonment as it is a more haunting and dramatic looking structure than other castles of the region. Although Vlad III may not have ever been to Castle Bran, there is still today a strong connection between the castle and the novel Dracula, by Bram Stoker. During Stoker's research on the region of Transylvania, he came across the brutal accounts of the atrocities committed by Vlad III. It is said he directly used the name Dracula after reading on the subject, but that his inspiration for Dracula was not solely based upon the historical figure. It is said instead that it was largely due to American cinema that Vlad III is considered the primary source of inspiration for the character Count Dracula. Despite there being a connection between Stoker and Vlad III, there is still no known direct connection between Stoker's fictional castle and Bran Castle. The description of the castle in the novel Dracula does not match the description of Bran Castle. It is now known that the reason there is such a widely known and believed connection between Castle Bran and the Dracula legend is tourism. In the 1970s the Communist Party of Romania was developing a closer relationship to the West. It was through its relationship with the Western world that Romania decided to put a wider focus on marketing for tourism to the country. Because of the location of Bran Castle, its dramatic architecture, and its supposed connection to Vlad III Dracula and his connection to Bram Stoker's Dracula, the Romanian government decided to market the castle as the "real Dracula Castle". As such, it would draw in tourists and expand Romania's economy, while giving exposure to the country to make it more well-known. The castle, now a museum, has been widely visited and respected both for aiding the economy of Romania and bringing more light to the legend of Vlad III Dracula. -Wiki -

Halloween Black Cat Special Originally posted in 2011... this has been updated for 2014 with 6 new pictures to replace a few broken images and give you more of a spooky sensation! Enjoy, and BOO! Once a year, the world joins together as one to recognize the power of black cats. But, in Schulmania, we recognize this power every day of the year. After all, our leader, the Supreme Wirdle, is a black cat. And, we are well aware of her power and majesty. Long may she purr over us! As we can see, people from around the world also venerate the Supreme Wirdle and her sweetness… Wirdle cookies… Wirdle costumes… Inflatable Wirdle shrines??? I will bet that on Halloween, known in Schulmania as “Wirdle Appreciation Day”, there will be events quite similar to those in Schulmania. In Schulmania, kittens show their appreciation for the Supreme Wirdle’s cuteness by dressing up in cute outfits. Then, they emulate her sweetness by accumulating candy from the neighborhood. Have any of you ever participated in this ritual? If not, here’s how it works… Step 1: Get a cool costume… Perhaps a mouse? Or maybe a vampire? Step 2: Wait until dark and then go out in your neighborhood and collect candy… Leave school in the afternoon super hyped up, after having driven the poor teachers crazy all day with hyperness… The second darkness starts to fall… head out! After all, every moment at home is a wasted candy collecting moment! Be careful crossing the street… and don’t be too concerned about houses without their lights on… some of them have those :please take one” bowls of candy on the front porch. “One” is, of course, subjective… one... piece… handful… bowlful… Remember, not all candy is created equal. Here’s a guide: GOOD: Snickers, Hershey’s, M&M, Milky Way, Butterfinger, Baby Ruth, Kit Kat (of course) BAD: Peanut Butter Blossoms, rock-hard taffy, Circus Peanuts, raisins (really??!!), apples (what am I, Snow White??!!) The big houses usually have big candy. Look at this one… no ‘fun size’ here! I mean, seriously… why is the FUN SIZE one the SMALLEST??!! Just how much fun can you have with half a bite of candy??!! Dentists must have come up with that one. If it was me, ‘fun size’ packs of M&Ms would come in oil drums… Live in a higher-density neighborhood? Can we say “ka-CHING”??!! It’s the mother lode!!!! I am so jealous! Way back in my trick-or-treating days, I had to walk uphill both ways in the snow just to get to a house giving out a single M&M… So, you say “I am too old to go trick-or-treating”?? No problem! You could do what I do… one trick is to go to the store on November 1st and buy candy for half off. Or, save yourself the trip and try my other trick: set up shop on the sidewalk as a Halloween Tollbooth. Kids pay one piece of candy to pass by… it’s genius!! I can tell some of you are rolling your eyes at this…. But lemme tell you, it works! Just ask the neighborhood kids going out this Halloween with their E-Z Pass transponders on their candy bags… And, please feel free to go back to older entries and read more about Schulmania. <------Click here to see the revolving globe showing Schulmania's visitors!
