Twinkle, twinkle, little BAT...
madhatter106 replied to madhatter106's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
I've been taking stock of the stuff that I've uploaded to Patreon, and thought I should share some of it, as it will be landing on the STEX in the next several months (depending on the original release date). A few of these have been previously shared, but I've lumped them together and arranged them, so you'll see a familiar face or two... Low wealth residentials - partially inspired by some similar Maxis counterparts.... Medium wealth residentials... High wealth residentials... SRO hotels - low wealth seedy flophouse style stuff... Mexican restaurants - returning to my CS$ roots...! Those were the first several months...mad has been a busy hatter this last year! Hoping to share more soon...- 1,133 Replies

OMG it's Moxie! I had never seen it in stores growing up in northeastern PA, but when I was in college in Pittsburgh, a friend told me all about it. Apparently it tastes horrible, and he gave me a can that I never touched. About ten years later, it exploded in my cabinet.

No, not the darkness. To quote Emma Thompson in the movie Howard's End (who in turn was quoting an old German proverb), "not cancelled, just postponed." I have a plan for a little set of 2x3 right-corner lot buildings, and this one will be a part of it. I am no further along with it than I was when I posted it in this thread originally, as I have stymied myself with the roof details, and have not decided upon what configuration it will have. I waiver between putting something special up there, and thinking that something too highly detailed would be overkill. The building already has a lot going on. It will see the light of day eventually, first through my Patreon, and then subsequently here on the STEX. I am glad it has not been forgetten about- 1,133 Replies

Query Tool UI Extensions DLL
madhatter106 replied to Null 45's topic in SC4 Modding - Open Discussion
Remember that you'll need some extra room at the bottom of the residential queries for the My Sim. Standard residential queries are already the most jam-packed with info and thus are the "tallest" vertically (just compare their heights to those of commercial and industrial buildings, which don't care about things like the School Grade and the Hospital Grade). And then throwing in the My Sim at the bottom left, next to the close button. With the inclusion of all your additional text, it might be running into/over the My Sim picture, so you might need to adjust your query layout a little bit. I had a devil of a time working out the residential custom query for some uploads which I have yet to share on the STEX - I could have left the My Sim out of it, perhaps, but didn't want to aggravate or create any problems down the road... -

@brancra - ah man, I couldn't possibly follow in the footsteps of @Jasoncw - he would put my silly cargo cult modelling rituals to shame! It would be like him conducting a major symphony orchestra, and then I come onstage afterwards with a toy piano to play "Chopsticks..." I wanted to test out some stuff in Photoshop, after looking at some pictures of modern glass skyscrapers. More sophisticated modelling programs have this easier than little old gmax, but after an hour of messing around with lots of layers and opacities and filters, I kinda like the direction this little glass test cube has been going... Lots more to mess around with, like the scale of what is being reflected, but the general idea is there...- 1,133 Replies

Is there anyway to make new lots other than to use beginner-unfredndly and outdated tools such as Gmax.
madhatter106 replied to king_tika1's topic in SC4 - Custom Content
And yet I have managed to get along just fine with "torturous" gmax well enough since late 2008. And buggy though it might be, it is infinitely more useable at the moment (and in perpetuity, so it seems) than BAT4Max. So people can continue to rag on gmax all they might, but I can produce a BAT with it today and post it on the STEX; the same cannot be said for BAT4Max. -

The Gmax (BAT) Fundamentals Video Tutorials
madhatter106 commented on Superstar's article in BAT & Lot Editor Tutorials
I am super late to this party, but ages ago I took the liberty of downloading the three videos that were associated with this series. If there is a Simtrop mod or admin that I should get in touch with, so that they can be hosted here, let me know? -

Regarding the black screen and the pop-up message, I find that it will happen when I walk away from the computer for a period of time and my screen saver kicks in. When I return to revive my laptop, gmax will do this. I close the pop-up, go back into the program, hit "W" a couple of times, and it will get back to brass tacks. Sometimes afterwards, it refuses to show my vertices when I look at modifiers on objects, or it shrinks them so small that I can't see them highlighted in red to select them. In this case, I just close gmax and reload. I also get the pop-up in situations like @Tarkus mentioned before me - things like toggling back and forth between gmax and Google Earth will throw a wrench into gmax every now and then. I have also found that if I load gmax, then load an older version of Photoshop sometime afterwards, it will create the same pop-up situation. Something in my little system doesn't like to share with gmax; but if the worst thing that happens is I have to close and reload gmax, that is an easy enough fix, despite whatever is causing it. -

Little ol' gmax may be "oudated," but I manage to do okay with it, even after all these long years... As mentioned and linked above, it's still available and usable, even though it isn't supported. -

Can I remove everything Maxis?
madhatter106 replied to Propfam's topic in SC4 Modding - Open Discussion
I agree - I think some of the Maxis buildings are great. The saturation and repetition of them (ie. if you were only playing "vanilla") is what makes me like some of them less. But if there is enough variety in the plugins folder, you can have good Maxis alongside good custom content. However, there is a lot of (in my humble opinion) below-Maxis-level content out there on various sites and exchanges. Just because someone other than Maxis made it doesn't necessarily mean that it will be better. Just like there are badly modeled or textured or lotted or modded Maxis buildings, there are some just as badly modeled or textured or lotted or modded ones out there with other authors' names on them. I am very selective about what I have in my plugins folder, so my bar for downloading is very personal. As far as BATting goes, my dream would be to have enough time and enough resources (and enough coffee) to BAT enough stuff that my plugins folder has only my stuff in it. Such a project would be vast, and if only I had enough of the said time, resources, coffee...but a folder full of growables up to snuff by my standards would be heavenly for me. But as I say often, one dreams in fire, yet works in clay... -

@trar - thanks, I am always sort of "in action," it's just that sometimes my posts are few and far between I rather like the "no dependencies" tack that I have mostly adhered to. In fact, I was looking through some older uploads of mine, and a couple have a texture dependency or two, which are entirely unnecessary - though they are textures that are in very popular dependency packs which (no doubt) the most casual of players most likely will have in their plugins folders, part of me wanted to revise them and just use standard Maxis textures to make it all easier. In the end, I decided against tweaking them...they are not problematic, and I don't want to be a hammer looking for a nail. For future uploads, I'm firmly in the "no dependencies" camp. Lotting is very much a personal preference, and I have no stake on any of the dogs in the race of that debate. Some people can't stand the standard Maxis lotting, and use BSC (and other) stuff for variation and verisimilitude. My lotting is very simple, almost minimal or non-existent, as it is not a huge focus for me. So the Maxis is good enough for me. I know that some people have done relots of my stuff, from what I have seen in CJs and here on Simtropolis. I think there's only one of my uploads that really required dependencies, and it was the Simtology Celebrity Center - but then again, the standard Maxis props and textures weren't going to do it justice. That one was my biggest in terms of dependencies.- 1,133 Replies

The vice president of Finance is on his way down to see your boss, the vice president of Mergers and Acquisitions, but he's currently in a meeting with the vice president of Human Resources, who has just called for a meeting with the vice president of Development to discuss just exactly what happened at that drunken company mixer this past weekend. Just another day at the office, right? If you would rather field phone calls and run interference for a two-bit hack in a three-piece suit who draws a six-figure salary, then this pack is for you. It's the tenth in the (seemingly never ending) series of midrise commercial offices. Included in this upload are the following establishments... Faraday and Jensen, Inc. Ferrin and Mageau, Esq. Shepard & Hartnell The Stine Corporation The Graysmith Building Avery Title & Trust Six different BATs, on varying lot footprints of 2x2, 2x3, 3x2, and 3x3. All modded like past uploads, and all with custom nighlights as well. Special thanks to fellow Simtropolis user @brancra for once again helping me test these, to make sure they are fit and primed and ready to grow in your cities. So, put that "Company Meeting, Do Not Disturb" sign in the window to the outer office, lock the door, and polish up that resume - because the vice president of Public Relations just retired and you've had your eye on that position for months. Enjoy!- 1 Comment

madhatter106 replied to madhatter106's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
Thanks to all of those who have signed up so far. I'm looking forward to kicking into high gear for 2024 and getting lots of BATs done and shared. (And rest assured, these Patreon BATs will be making it to the STEX at some point, per the site's rules and guidelines regarding this.) Jingle bells!- 1,133 Replies

Twinkle, twinkle, little BAT...
madhatter106 replied to madhatter106's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
So, I've decided that after two hundred or so BATs, I'm creating a little Patreon. The extra pocket change is nice, but in part this is a good motivation for me to regularly finish and share stuff; in the last several months, I have been quietly BAting away and not getting anything done or finished to a workable state - this will be a good impetus for me to get things into gear and into people's plug-ins folders. The aim is to create a range of works each month; either one large super supremo BAT, or a group of smaller BATs along the lines of what I've done before. This first month is going to be one of the former - a 3x3 office building that I have been messing with a bit for a while. Future packs will include more of my beloved CS and CO, as well as residentials, and (gasp) industrials, too! I'm aiming to share around the middle of each month, but may split things up throughout the month depending on how quickly I can move things from the hard drive to the finished folder.
