Journey Through The Sahara

SaharaBanner.png?dl=1

Our next stop takes us to the famous Sahara Desert - the world's largest hot desert. For thousands of years, nomads have adapted to the harsh terrain, with an extensive knowledge of the terrain being absolutely vital to their survival. Knowing exactly where each and every oasis is located is perhaps the single most important aspect to this, and we approach our first one in the Ennedi Plateau of Chad. Guelta d'Archei is perhaps the Sahara's most famous oasis, and has been used since prehistoric times, note the cave paintings on the walls. The water's distinctive black hue - caused by untold amounts of camel dung over the years - hides the lake's most dangerous species quite well, the Nile crocodile.

Hopping from oasis to oasis is crucial for anyone traveling in the Sahara, and fortunately we're able to find another one just in time. The small town of Bardaï, Chad, has been an important trading post in the region for centuries. Unfortunately, droughts have ravished the landscape and the riverbed is almost completely bare. There's just enough water left over for the camels.

After a month-long northern excursion in search of pastures, the caravan finally starts to head back south through the mighty Grand Erg Occidental, but not before they come face to face with one of the Sahara's greatest dangers. An enormous sandstorm engulfs the caravan, and rages on for nearly an entire day.  Fortunately, by sitting to the side of their camels, they're able to lessen the blow and eventually get back on their feet.

After nearly a month more of traveling, we finally reach our end destination of Djenné, Mali. Every Monday, the entire region takes part in market day - truly a sight to behold. Just under the shadow of the magnificent Great Mosque, the streets come alive with countless shoppers and market vendors, giving them the much needed opportunity to trade camels or goods.

this looks awesome again, I don't have time to gaze at these pictures for the 20 or so minutes (each) that they deserve, so'll be back later!

Thank you very much. :)

So God-dam-GORGEOUS!

That second picture is quite the scene- did you use a desert style terrain controller and then layer some MMPs on top?

While that 3rd picture is strangely mesmerizing. Is this another terrain controller?

Keep this up! And get these entries featured, this is some incredibly unique stuff and I think also a first for SC4- true African desert.

In the second picture, I pretty much used _marsh_'s Sahara Terrain mod w/ a heavy dose of the Xannepan terrain brushes from Poseidon to give it more variation. After that, I used a variety of MMP paths/grasses to both create a seamless transition between the two and to detail the landscape.

In the third picture, I actually made my own mini terrain mod by exporting the "sand dune" looking texture from _marsh_'s Sahara terrain mod and made it more saturated/red. I then created new textures out of it, added it into my textures file, I then made my own terrain controller and used that texture at every elevation.

I've been thinking of getting featured but haven't gotten around to it just yet, probably will sometime soon. Thanks for the support though!

Awesome pictures; nice to see the african theme on the horizon of Simtropolis in such astouding detail, desire to go beyond the casual SC4 cities is hard to come by, well done !

Thanks for the comment once again - when it comes to SC4, creating truly unique and special places is my passion!

Wow, I don't think I've been so stunned and mesmerized by a series of images from this game in a long time. This is amazing.

Thank you for the praise. Glad you enjoyed it. :)

WOW! Absolutely blown away, just like last time. You've captured the African atmosphere beautifully with your towns, landscapes and custom terrain.

Thanks! Glad I was able to replicate that African atmosphere despite the extremely small amount of African related plugins on the STEX.

korver: That would explain it. The JENX Poseidon terrain brushes contain two sandy brushes, which would explain why Heblem's paths are partially faded in your picture- the result of the terrain brush partially overlapping the MMP texture. I take it those yellow rocks are from c.p.? The desert variety?

I tried playing around with the the CP rocks but the color didn't mesh too well, so I just used some murimk brown bedrock and that one beige Sorchin rock mainly instead to complement some of the Heblem stuff around them.

HOLY CARABAOS. My god, what a fantastic work! Excuse me now, I need to lift my jaw.  :thumb:

I have no idea what carabaos means - but I'll assume it's good, so thank you very much :P

I did come back to look again and I'm still amazed. How does an entry get featured on the front page? Without wishing to offend anything that is featured, something like this should be on the front page of the site for weeks. Not just for the quality or the effort involved; but simply because this is unique.

I actually just submitted it to be featured so you might be seeing it very soon. :D

Magnificent !!!

I almost expect your caravan to stumble across the ancient ruins of a long forgotten Roman border fortress at any moment!!

It goes without saying that you have gone to great lengths to create something new and exciting -- you have even engineered your own tools to make it possible !!

The rest of us are mere children doodling in a sandbox !!

Hmmm... Roman fortresses.. now you're giving some ideas.. :P Glad you like my work so much. :thumb:

Reminds me of the when Ilikehotdogsalot was still active doing cities around the world.. Good times. :)

Nice work, it looks excellent.

I definitely was inspired by ilikehotdogsalot's CJ "World" when thinking of making this CJ, along with Heblem's "Our Mini Earth" and elavery's short lived "Scenic Routes Around the World" - with the exception that I'm planning on incorporating more of a nature/wildlife theme in addition to my cities as well. Appreciate the comment!

Excellent presentation man! Cars in the last pic seem a bit too large but that 2nd pic is off the charts!

Thank you. I definitely see what you're saying about the cars - something seems to be just a tiny bit off regarding that pic. Do you think the issue might lie with the fact that I might have made the streets a bit too narrow, or do the cars perhaps need to be rescaled slightly. I really like making those crowded, bustling market type pictures, but it's difficult at times - so it's very helpful having another pair of eyes to help me perfect it.

Excellent work on those pictures! I wholly agree that it captures the essence of the Saharan life, the harsh environment and the daily struggle for survival, yet people and animals still find a way to live and thrive in this nomadic life.

Happy to hear that my pics brought out "the essence of the Sahara"

My guess is that it has to do with scaling relationships. If you created all those marvelous props yourself then you might (if you are so inclined) might revisit and play with the respective dimensional properties you have given the cars, and even it looks like some of the people props as well. Course regardless of that the images are awesome in and of themselves..

What a treat though, it's rare these days to see such a different flavor come across the pages of Simtrop SC4....

After looking into it, it would seem like the main culprit would be nbvc's bedouins and most of motokloss's car props. And perhaps to a lesser extent, the VIP cars/nams people props. Nothing a little SC4 Model tweaker can't fix though - thanks for the feedback.

This is beautiful work. I imagine a ton of effort went into it, so great job :)

Many long nights for sure, but the end result definitely makes it worth it! I remember some of your awesome desert scenes from Royal Gansbaai a while back, definitely gave me some inspiration while working on this project. Appreciate the comment.

Unbelievable.  Un-effing-believable.  The time it must have taken just to find the right buildings, MMPs, etc., then the flawless balance and composition, the attention to detail, the cohesiveness of the images, the realism, the subtlety, the originality, the fact that I can identify old riverbeds in the seconds shot....I'm blown away.  Great work!

That's probably the best compliment i've gotten so far - thanks! :D
