Conquering Mount Fitz Roy

Banner.png?dl=1

Jutting 11,020 feet out of the southern Patagonian landscape, the imposing sheer granite walls of Mount Fitz Roy makes it the one of the crown jewels of southern South America. Technically challenging climbing routes coupled with notoriously bad weather makes it one of the toughest climbs in the world, but the view from the top makes it all worth it.

Day 1

Our journey starts off in the sleepy little town of El Chaltén, Argentina, right at the footstep of Mount Fitz Roy. Our group meets up to discuss our routes in the upcoming days - the weather looks like it'll be manageable, but in this part of the world, that could change in the blink of an eye.

We set off for Fitz Roy, and we're immediately in for a treat. The fall foliage is in full swing surrounding the misty Rio Fitz Roy, making for an absolutely gorgeous view. We won't be here long however, as the terrain quickly starts to get much more challenging.

After several more miles of walking, we start to approach the base of the mountain and get our first up close view of the surrounding peaks, Techado Negro and Aguja de la 'S'. They're beautiful, no doubt - but they pale in comparison to the peak we're headed to next. Nightfall begins to set in, so we set up our tents and call it a day.

Day 2

The day started off fairly easily - a straight forward climb up the mountain. However, our plans quickly got derailed when a storm approaches us, making any technical climbing an impossibility. We decide to instead take cover in a rocky outcrop and wait it out. Conditions finally improved just enough for us to continue on - and we begin to make our ascent up near-vertical granite cliffs. We had originally planned on setting up our tents on a small, flat plateau a couple hundred feet away - but due to previous setbacks, we fall behind and the darkness combined with driving rain makes any more climbing far too dangerous. We're forced to precariously hang our tents off the side of the mighty Aguja Poincenot instead.

Day 3

Conditions still aren't great, but we continue to push on. The granite cliffs are coated with a thin layer of ice and storm clouds begin to roll in, making things far more dangerous than we had originally thought. However, despite the conditions, we persevere and finally reach the peak of Mount Fitz Roy. We proudly set up our Argentinian flag and take in the beautiful view - its just as good as you would imagine.

Wow! Actually I was there in el chalten this winter and I must say a little more color green and glaciers wouldnt hurt. :P But still I totally adore your work. Please let me see those nazca lines again but in a simcity way.

And also while were in latin america a really challenging scenery would be one of my favorite places, Cafayate region in Salta, Argentina. Red rocks and wineyards.

cheers

I can't say that I expected anyone who actually visted El Chaltén to see this - that's pretty cool! I'm jealous, the views must have been amazing.

Thanks for the feedback you gave me as well. The one Fitz Roy fall pic I was mainly working from only had a handful of green trees in it so I was a bit biased while making these pics lol, but after taking a second look at a couple other pics I would have to agree with you there.

I actually spent half a day trying to make a legit looking Perito Moreno glacier to go along with this, but I couldn't ever get it to look right so I decided to drop it. Maybe when my terrain modding skills improve enough.

I don't know about just having a Cafayate update alone - but I could certainly see a "famous wine regions" update sometime down the road. Perhaps Cafayate, Napa, Tuscany, Bordeaux, and my personal favorite, the Badacsony Hill region in Hungary. We'll see. :)

Although I am not the one to climb on mountains, I had fun to read. Stunning pictures again! And the hanging tents ...

Thanks for the kind words. The tents seem to be a hit.

wow, very good!

Is this a thing? Hanging your tent somewhere.

Yeah,I didn't even know it was a thing either until I saw it on some Fitz Roy climbing documentary a while back. Which is also where I pretty much got the idea for this update. Thanks for the comment. :)

The town are creek are gorgeous and an absolute treat to look at! Mountain campsite was also pretty cool. Admittedly SC4 isn't the greatest with massive mountain peaks but you've managed to capture that feeling pretty well. A treacherous one too, especially with those tents hanging off the mountainside... :noway: Curious though, what is the maximum elevation possible with your current custom terrain mod?

Keep up the great work!

Yeah the mountains certaintly weren't easy to make at all, but I think they came out looking okay. Not perfect by any means, but still pretty decent. The max elevation should be pretty close to where it needs to be I think, I just chose the option in the SC4Mapper that matched up with how tall Fitz Roy is in real life. Thanks for the comment! :)

The mosaic shot with the streams is stunningly detailed. I've always been more interested in urban landscapes than natural ones in SC4, but no matter ones preference the beauty of that image can't be denied(btw what mod are you using for the leafless trees in that image?)

A couple other none-entry related questions. Are you a member on SC4devotion? And if not, why not? :P It seems like there is generally a greater focus on landscaping CJ over there then on simtropolis. Plus a number of members have CJ/MD's on both sites. Also if you don't mind me asking, I'm curious about what you do IRL. Anything related to the gaming or artist world for instance?

Thanks for the support - the trees are actually an MMP I made from the CPVol02 prop pack using all the dead trees. I actually have a SC4D account so I might post some stuff over there but I haven;t really gotten around to it just yet. For your last question, unfortunately what I do in real life has nothing to do with being creative or artistic :/ This is just what I do for fun.

Applause! That village in particular :ohyes:

Are the powerlines yours? And are they available to download somewhere?

Thanks once again! :) They're just the Rural rivers project MMP poles over on SC4D.

Nice! How did you get the tents attached to the mountain?

Thanks for the comment. :) Unfortunately, due to the limitations of SC4 you can't actually place a lot on a slope that steep - so to make that pic I made a custom lot with a couple of nbvc's tents and just photoshopped it on to the side of the mountain along with a couple lines I added as well. Here they are if you want them:

I was there too last year and I was also able to get a picture of the mountains without clouds , I asked a swiss girl that was in our group to take me one before it got cloudy again which happened... 10 minutes ago, also, this is the best view available... minus the clouds but really impressive either way. I do agree, some glaciers wouldn't hurt for they were many. :)

I hope you might like the pictures. Great work!

Thanks for commenting and sharing those gorgeous pictures :thumb:

I really wanted to incorporate some glaciers initially when I was creating this update, but unfortunately it seems almost impossible given the limitations of SC4 terrain mods. For starters, the mock ones I made could only go in a straight line and ended up looking rather silly - and there was seemingly no way to get any sort of smooth transition into the lake. I guess I could have just photoshopped some of them in there..  I'm still learning a lot about terrain mods and my skills are improving though, and I do have a few ideas about how to possibly tackle those issues - but probably not for Fitz Roy. Perhaps the Himalayas or Alps, if I ever reach that point. :)
