Maybe it helps to clear up the terminology here. Technically a building and a prop are two different types of exemplar files (aka . desc file). However, both can be made from a model (aka BAT, aka .SC4Model ). So what you want is to go from model to building exemplar, which is then in turn used to create the lot file.

If you follow the steps outlined in Nos17's link, you'll still end up with a prop exemplar. However, using the SC4PIM the process is nearly identical if you want a building exemplar. Instead of dragging the model to the prop category, you simple drag the model to a suitable buildings category, which is one step above in Nos' picture. Alternatively you can see an example of model to building here, though in this example it's used to make a growable lot.

Yo, Vortext ---

Sooooo -- what you're saying is that Sc4PIM (PLUGIN MANAGER) will convert a model file to a building file in a manner similar to the one used to make a descriptor file for a lot.

Which means -- IF Benoit has a free-standing boat model file that I can extract from the stuff I downloaded (lots of downloads come "exe.packaged" or as dat. files) then I should be in business.  I'll have to look to see what he has in those Zips.

One Question:  The link tutorial, though informative,  will be a bit confusing.  He seems to be running SC4 PIM EXTENDED VO.32.  I am working with Sc4 Plugin Manager Version 1.1.1.0.  Is "32" a newer version of what I've got -- or is that part of the whole "PIMX" thingie ??

P.S.

I just had another thought.  MGB very kindly made a blank file for me some time ago, which I used to make descriptor files for custom lots.  The blank's Model File Type is shown as "building".  Would that work in this situation?

2 things:

Does anyone know if there is a mod that removes trees from all lots?

I am looking for modern municipal buildings such as a city hall and a courthouse. I am doing the city that I live in and it  was built in the 50's and 60's. The 1930's buildings obviously don't fit.

If you followed Vortext's link to Benoit's MedMarina download, then you already know that his listing for the props used to make the lots is a bit haphazard.  I suggest you install the lot files to plugins and use the PLUGINS MANAGER to pull up each one so you can compile a list of all the props included.  Time consuming, but far more informative than the list on the forum.  And -- you can then pull them up in LOT EDITOR to see how they have been constructed as well as getting an idea of how much stuff is missing.  I already have some ideas on how to replace missing material with props in my files.

As it turns out, the material is beautiful and cleverly handled, but mostly a conglomeration of, among others, Murimk, Callagrafx, and what eventually became PEG material.

Having looked through the material, I have established that there are NO "ploppable, stand-alone", boat lots.  And -- there are no Model files included in the download.  There are only Lot files and Descriptor files in the package.

Like PEG, and as pointed out by "nos.17", they are all "baked into" the lot -- you either eat the whole cake or none at all.

There are tons of boat props used in the lotting, but since there are no model files, no stand-alone boat lots, and I couldn't Bat my way out of a paper bag -- my only recourse at this point will be to get creative and re-lot this material into a nice little North Sea marina.  There are only 26 or 27 lots -- I should be done by Christmas (2017...??)!

I think I may go over to "What you're working on" or "City Journals" and put up some pics showing what I've done with all this stuff you guys have been kind enough to help me find.  This "realism thing" is turning out to be a bunch more fun than jamming them in like sardines in a can!

Did Sim Goober ever update his suburban mall? I have the updated Department store props he posted on SC4D, but I am not sure those are compatible with the suburban mall here on STEX. Does anyone know if there's an updated version on the LEX?

Yo, gviper --

I understand completely.

I'm still a newbie at this sort of thing -- so I've spent the morning trying to strip a 1x1 lot to see what makes it tick.  I've still got one brown box -- and I think MilitantRadical has provided me with a clue.

But I was never interested in the Italian theme.  I just want to strip them down and convert them to something I can use on Germany's North Sea coast.  I think I can make it work.  If you're interested in the finished product -- let me know.

Do you have a clue as to what this "blank building" is that he talks about in the comments section???

I've still got one brown box left on the lot -- a big one -- and I think its something called an invisible building.  This may be what I need.

I assume you've used these lots.  Can you tell me what it is and where it is?  Benoits comments and link take me to a download page with a large office building on it -- puzzled!!

The buildings may show as a healthcare center because of this "blank building" that he used.  Come to think of it -- that big building in the link might actually be a healthcare center --!

Any ideas would be appreciated -- I'm getting old fast going back and forth to the EDITOR.

Yo, Rad --

Based on the link you provided, and your clue about hospitals, I figured out where to find the "invisible building" model file that was causing the last brown box on my marina lots.  Thank you for your input, sir.

I am now busy trying to re-work the lots into something more North European.  Unfortunately, the offset rendering of the boats forces me to retain the 2 tile depth of the lots -- I had hoped to reduce them to a 1 tile depth to allow for greater flexibility.  But I will just have to make do -- the boats are waaaaay to good to give up on.

Thanx, again --

Hi there,

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I was wondering if anyone has come across coloured tiles that you can place in Sim City 4? By this, I mean 1x1 (or similar) tiles that you can put on the ground in different colours? Just to decorate the place a bit? For example, pedestrian mall tiles that could come in red, green, yellow, blue, etc, so you could design little pedestrian decorative designs.

I hope I'm making sense.

Thanks!

Yo, guys --

Is there a tutorial that explains how to get all your custom lots organized, arranged, and grouped into certain menu categories??

I've got industry, boats, hospitals, etc, etc, -- and they are scattered all over the place.

I know the descriptor will assign them to a given menu -- i.e., transportation, civic, educational, parks, and the like.

Is there a numerical formula you can change in the lot EDITOR that will group them in some sort of sequential order? For example; assigning a number sequence to say, five lots in a fence kit so that they will appear in the menu together.

This should be a clue that this new "realism bug" I've got is creating a massive amount of custom lots -- and it's becoming difficult to scroll through them.  I'm working on those Mediterranean Marina lots, and I will have to decide whether or not to leave them as they came to me (hospitals) -- or change them to a water menu.  The hospital option has two advantages -- (1) No work involved, and (2) the hospital drop-down is virtually empty.

Any suggestions on how to get them organized -- or to find an understandable tutorial??

Yo, guys --

Haven't do modding for ages myself but I will try to answer that.

To easily change where the item located in the menu (park, hospital, school...) you can use LEProp for quick edit. Though you can also change it with iLive Reader to do that but they all ran with hex-codes which isn't user friendly :P
To change the ORDER or index of your item, you have to use iLive Reader, refer steps in the picture linked below to change them:

pic 1
pic2

The order are in hex-code, so you gotta use a decimal to hex converter to get your number first.
http://www.binaryhexconverter.com/decimal-to-hex-converter

A lot of people don't change that value so they all have the index "1" by default and... mess menu happens.
I usually uses very large number to arrange items at a place I know no one will interfere, for example 9500 (decimal) which converts to 0x0000251C (hex)

So if I got 5 items... It will goes like...
0x0000251C (9500)
0x0000251D (9501)
0x0000251E (9502)
0x0000251F (9503)
0x00002520 (9504)

The buildings may show as a healthcare center because of this "blank building" that he used.

It's been a while since I've used this lot set but I also remember getting one brown box. I never figured out what it was. Still, I just didn't use the one that had it. Otherwise the set works very well.

A couple of things to note about this. Any lot can be in any menu if you code it to work as such. Being in the Hospital Menu doesn't necessarily mean it's a hospital. Since most people's park and seaport menus are bulging, some creators use lesser used menus to make items easier to find. LE Prop is the easiest way to change this, but beware to only make changes to one lot at a time. There is a bug in the program that can mess with the lots otherwise. Don't forget to make a copy of the files before editing them so you've a backup.

As for the blank building, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a WMP prop (wmp_dummies.dat) that's commonly used but uncommonly referenced. If you come across this problem, you can always resolve it by creating a new Buildings Exemplar for a given lot.

0x00002520 (9504)

One slight "cheat" I often use here to save using large amounts of Hex.

You can group a set of lots by using the same Item Order ID, but then subgroup them in the order of how much they cost to plop (property: Plop Cost).

So for the above example, If you give the ID of all five items as "0x0000251C", but then make the plop cost from $1-$5 then the item that is $1 appears first and $5 will appear last within that grouping.

I don't know of such a thing that you can download, but a simple lot with little more than a base texture is really easy to create. I'd recommend adding some props to make them more interesting though. All the resources for such things are available, for example here are some textures from BSC Textures Vol 01 that I think would fit your needs:

I've posted a tutorial for how to create new lots using the Maxis tools on the STEX. The Lot Editor is your friend as once you've got the hang of it, you open the door to customising your game exactly how you want it.

Yo, guys --

I know this is a bit off-topic for this thread -- but I thought you might like to see what I did with those Benoit Mediterranean Marina lots.  There were 26 original lots, and I finished up with 32 lots and an additional 8 boat lots.

Bear in mind that there is no particular rhyme or reason to this.  I found that none of the seawall props lined up with its neighbor, so there was a lot of work and re-work to be done.  When I finished a lot -- I just plunked it down to test and see if it matched up with the neighboring lot.

Some nice shots there Dreadnought. One slight issue though, I can never click on any of your pictures without getting some very inappropriate advertising appearing, so for example just now some fairly indecent images :???:. You might consider using a different hosting service for your screenshots, for no better reason that it's the one I use I could recommend photobucket.com.

The boats are a little bit close to the seawalls, not sure if you can move them a little but that would be an improvement. You might consider releasing these lots, they are something I'd imagine others would find useful. I can help you with that if you like the idea.

Head over to my Lot and Mod Shack to keep abreast of my latest developments.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

New to the NAM? Check out my tutorials on YouTube. Latest upload: How to: RHW - MHO Roundabout Interchanges. (Nov 25).

p.s. - I'm MGB over on SC4D and a member of the NAM team.

Yo, guy --

I used "ImageVenue" years ago as a picture host -- and they weren't clogged with porn ads back then.  Stupid me -- until you remarked on it -- the thought had not occurred to me that we do have ladies and some younger members on this site.  And the dumb thing about it -- they ask you to mark your content as "safe for the office" (or not) -- and then they attach those ads to it!!  I'll take a look at photobucket.

Yeah -- I took a look at some of the lots and I see what you mean about the boats being too close to the quays.  Some of the lots I took straight from Benoit and I never changed the boat placement.  I'll look into that, today.  "The Devil is in the details" --(lol).

As far as releasing the lots -- I would be fine with that -- IF there is enough interest.  No sense making the effort if they will end up as clutter in the Exchange.

Only one problem: -- I never actually considered releasing the lots -- so I did not make a list of the props I used to replace Benoit's material that I could not find.  That could cause a real problem for people, though I used basic stuff and kept it down to the same stuff on most of the lots.  Plus I've kept one of Benoit's folders that is full of prop descriptors.  I can't figure it out, but removing the folder causes some of his yachts to disappear -- so at least part of it is relevant.

But thanks, guy!  I thought it was a descent first effort at a "modular" marina.  I figure to use NBVC's stuff in small residential areas, and use this for some of the large marinas you typically find in the smaller, coastal ports along the North Sea (Harleseil, etc, etc.)

In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed.  But they produced Michael Angelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, and The Renaissance.

In Switzerland, they had brotherly love and five hundred years of peace.  And what did that produce?

The cuckoo clock !

Nice work by the way.

You've got my vote for releasing the lots.

Cheers,

Yo, heartless --

Thanx for the pat on the back -- all newbies need a little "bump".  That makes TWO votes! (lol)

Dreadnought,

The work you did on those lots definitely earned the praise.

I love this game and I always welcome new content of quality.

Heck, I'd love the lots even if you don't do an official release. (hint, hint)

I am attempting to learn LOTTING /BATTING but working 60 plus hrs a week, is making it a bit rough at the moment.

But alas....................I look forward to more stuff from you, keep up the great work,

Best,

H.

Yo, Heartless --

I am gratified, indeed, that you approve of my humble efforts.  :kitty:

By comparison to other members, my stuff is child's play.  You, on the other hand, are a braver man that I.  :thumb:  I could not make a Bat if my life depended on it.  I took one look at that 3-D screen and couldn't hit the close button fast enough!

"rsc204" spent the best part of February, March, and part of April teaching me how to make lots -- the man has the patience of a Saint!  But thanks to his efforts, I think I've gotten pretty good at it.  I re-lotted FrankU's lighthouse (end of the marina pier) and even managed to keep the light effect!  Quite pleased with myself on that one.  Several of the filler lots around the base of the lighthouse are mine as well.  I figure details on the lots are the key to the whole thing -- the more detail and props -- the more realistic.  That's my current obsession -- realism.  I stopped going for a population record and decided to concentrate on more realism.  That's what got me going on Benoit's unfinished lots.  The PEG marinas are works of art, but I think they are about 30% over-sized and should have been shrunk to fit their surroundings.  The NBVC marinas are good, and flexible -- but not much attention to detail.  The Benoit stuff had everything I needed to make my own lots and figure out how to eventually make scratch lots.

As for your  -- hint, hint -- let me think on it.  The only thing stopping me from moving ahead with an official release is that I never made a list of props for the lots.  I didn't figure anyone would consider them good enough to release -- so I didn't think ahead about keeping track of the props.  Opening my lots and seeing a bunch of brown boxes might drive you round the bend, mate!

Do you have a lot of prop dependencies installed?

Sorry to hear about the 60+hour work week.  I used to work 10 hours a day, 6 days a week, no holidays, and God help you if you got sick!  I retired 3 years and 8 days ago (but who's counting -- right?) -- and I've never looked back.  Happiest I've ever been since I discovered the opposite sex!

Ta, Mate --

Can you give the link where you found the file? It would be helpful to know the exact phrasing of what they say is a dependency to be able to conduct a better search.

However, a quick google search for ITS Railprops resulted in two files: (1) and (2). Based on intuition, I am guessing that neither of those are what you are looking for, but I could be wrong.

The ITS Rail Props were merged into BSC Mega Props Misc Vol. 1 - good luck finding that without looking It up or knowing about it :D.
